Review: Deeper shades of a finely sifted pedigree. Irish label Appian Sounds, helmed up by Al Blayney, champion only winnowed techno sounds, not threshed. A welcome international team huddle in, with these six artists from locales as far-flung as Amsterdam and Valencia contributing the likes of 'Tsuneo' and 'Persist'. The tunes verge melodic as they move through and beyond jankiness, distending die-cut acids and subtly synthetic humanisations, especially in the percussion department. 'Fuego' is the zen roshi's choice, its gaffered, glass-smithed pads topping off a naturalistic percussive surging forward, one best experienced with your eyes closed.

Review: Colkin from Raw Soul and Mauke Club sets the tone on this new FUTUR compilation, which has been curated by Benedikt Meger with a spherical acid house meditation. Peter Seiler's track, a standout from the reissue of his debut album Flying Frames, features Sheryl Hackett's soulful vocals and merges song structure with jazz improvisation. Eoism from Pulse Drift, Undersound, and Inch By Inch delivers low-swung electro flavours perfect for sunset vibes while the B-side opens with Voertuig of Tonal Oceans and Cobra Club who presents a seriously raw acid jam followed by an experimental, jazzy piece, reminiscent of the 90s downtempo era. 'Eoism' closes things with a floating, futuristic banger, going to make a well rounded (in more ways than one) and ultimately very useful piece of vinyl.

Review: Finnish underground icon Sasu Ripatti returns under his most frequently used pseudonym, Vladislav Delay, for another bout of Dancefloor Classics. The series has already established a loyal following, and the fourth episode is enough to explain why, even if you've not encountered any of the preceding instalments. Music for imagined dancefloors is how the official release information puts it, it quickly becomes clear just how vivid that imagination is. Throwing down a string of footwork inspired cuts, the four tracks here are frantically upbeat and packed with filthy, jacking potential. But they're also deep, at times ghostly - or at least a little eerie - and ground in a desire not just to make people move, but also push sounds forward into new territories. Never an easy line to tread, the overall results hit as hard as the beats themselves.

Review: In 1961, producer David Rick discovered Vito and The Salutations, a Brooklyn harmony group of Italian, Irish and Jewish teenagers. Their energetic doo-wop take on 'Unchained Melody' became a hit until the British Invasion shifted the music scene. 'Hey There' remained unreleased until Rick's 1981 double album which compiled their singles and rare collector cuts after years of misrepresentation and a court battle with a copycat group. In 2020, Monster Mike unearthed The Long Island Sound's unreleased 1969 demo of 'Hey There' which was recorded before the band dissolved. Now, Oracion Records drops this forgotten gem on 45.

Review: The name of Barcelonan label Gente Seria Viste Chandal could best be translated to English as "serious people wear tracksuits", and while it may seem like a non-starter, we can glean all sorts of things from the idea alone. Best not to show up to any of their parties without at least your cotton bottoms on! Their sixth V/A brings handpicked local talents crossing between electro, complextro, grime and technobass with a naughty naughties tinge, the likes of 'Ultrasonic' and 'They Come At Night' emphasising freaky acids and soft-clipping chirrups in the highs.

Review: The Valentinos had plenty of early success but still, their story is often seen as one of missed opportunities. The group was led by Friendly Womack Sr. who taught his sons gospel songs before they pursued secular music and that rather led to a struggle between serving up gospel and secular sounds. History tells us the friendly "June" Womack recalled their desire for another hit like 'Looking For A Love' which had been a significant seller in their early days. Two tracks from that era had remained unreleased until now when Soul4Real Records pressed them up here and both are seriously good soul swingers.

Review: The Vee Gees began as 'The African Americans', but their name was later changed to 'The Versatile Gents' aka. The Vee Gees following a spate of creative differences over their original name. Review: Rather significant as old-school house releases go, the chain of influences behind Masters At Work’s ’The Masters At Work (Keep It Comin’ Now)’ is an elusive one. In 1991, Louie Vega and Marc Antony remixed new jack swing titan Keith Sweat’s own ‘Keep It Comin’, a timeless B3 side to round out Sweat’s original Elektra Records release. The track was a snowballer indeed, as it evolved into a standalone B-side in its own right, complementing the garage house classic release ‘Ride On The Rhythm’ on Atlantic Records. Now promoted once again to an A-side, we hear three new and exclusive mixes of thee original dub as well as two variations: Latinesque backing fills and programmable melodics twaddle away in the background of One Take Tito’s mix, while Kenlou and Eddie Mood bring twin yogic, myofibril relaxations to an already contracted sound.

Review: The first ever vinyl record to the name of Italian prodcuer Verniss (aka. VerniB) hears the artist expedite three floor-fillers for the Seekers sublabel Twig. Efficiency is the key word here; each track emphasises less productive floweriness and more floor-readiness, though that isn't to say the record lacks subtle embellishment: 'FS Polymonkey' is especially jamboree-ish, its organic, tuned percussions merging, grading with those which are synthetic. The mood of a metallic biotic rave continues well onto the itinerant B-sider 'Travel Smp'.

Review: Recorded in Essaouira, Morocco, Pedro Vian and Maalem Nabob Soudani present an exercise in melding the traditional and unorthodox, the old and new, the abstract and the direct, the exotic and, well, something even more exotic. Rooted in the Gnawa sound, but leaning heavily into deep electronic worlds, EMS AKS Synthi and buchla meet the qrebeb and guimbiri, everything contrasting yet complementing. The result is this intoxicating brew that transports you to the North African coastline on which this collection was conceived and captured, and then onto somewhere that's almost beyond the terrestrial. Close your eyes, allow the hypnotic looped musical phrases and organic aesthetic of the recording itself to wash over you, through, and around your body. Something to truly get lost in and a fantastic example of cross-pollination done properly.

Review: Viceversa is back on Rowle having last appeared here for the label's fifth release. His sound as subtly evolved since then but still comes with plenty of meaningful melodies and rich percussive patterns that bring something fresh to tech house. 'Sea Waves' opens with waves of synth and dubby drums sweeping you off your feet. The Floog remix is doused in echo and reverb for a more fleshy feel then 'Ocean Drive' is silky dub house with gloriously sleek lines. 'Circular Quay' is a darker one to close. A trio of top Romanians in Barac, Raresh and Sit have already been supporting these, which is high praise indeed.

Review: After a couple of quiet years Ferro's VBX label returns with a bang, as the esteemed Dutch minimal producer links up with none other than Ricardo Villalobos for a run of 'Ferric' jams. Enlightened souls should have some idea of what to expect here, as Ferro's snappy grooves collide with Villalobos' meandering sound collages to create psychoactive termites geared towards twisting out the dancefloor good and proper. This is proper minimal, with the percussion chiselled into fine clicks and pops to leave more space for the trippy elements to weave their magic. The quality comes assured from this new pairing, hopefully paving the way for more collaborations in the future.

'Death Of A Bassdrum' seems to take aim at techno by burying a 4/4 kick under a twitchy, uncomfortable bed of scuffs and scrapes, while 'Post-Mortem' diverts into space-building sonics where found sounds and artful reverb create a vibrant, three-dimensional space to explore with your mind's eye.

Review: Orlando Voorn's back catalogue is up there with many of his arguably more trendy American peers. This sixth outing from the "Classics" division of Nocturbulous Records backs that up by offering some such gems. 'Tronics' and 'Hydrotech' have been remastered and ew repressed for the first time here while 'Alien Interferences' and 'Need For Speed' have never before made it to wax. All four showcase the Dutchman'sstylish blend of supple techno drums and soulful machine sounds. Review: Dutch label Universo Positivo returns with label head Jospeh Salvador and house legend Orlando Voorn. Salvador has been active since the 1990s and has worked under various aliases and labels, while Voorn is known for connecting Detroit techno with European styles, and together they find a perfect sweet spot between deep and soulful house. Review: Strap in for this latest transmission from the fledging French label Loud Pressings. It's a straight-up techno offering with two killer jams from Vromo. 'Jack'd' is a lot of simple things done well - linear drums with a smart design and dusty texture, driving bass that never quits and well-used classic vocal samples to add a little flair while the dubby chords pan about the mix. 'Bodywork' is just as seemingly simple but hard to pull off - a convergence of loops that bring together muscular drums, funky bass, core claps and synth stabs that add some electricity to a classic, timeless techno weapon.

Review: Oasis Records is a Portuguese label and artist collective based in Lisbon and while this is their tenth release, it's their first on vinyl, and the music is certainly deserving of such treatment. The Vros is a collaboration between three Chilean brothers who use traditional instruments and synths to blend hypnotic sounds from house, electronica and world music. Each track symbolises an element - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water - with the tracks' connection to nature encouraging self-reflection, whilst also getting your feet moving. 'Space Marimba' is perfect for outdoor dancing with its happy marimba melodies and elastic bass, 'Don't Be Afraid' is pure Balearic house bliss and 'Fusion' brings subtle trance inducing chords while 'Release Your Mind' is a deep, mind-bending opener.

Few know Braxe was also behind the inimitable 'Music Sounds Better With You' by Stardust, alongside Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter of course, for which he was finally credited on 'The Upper Cuts' here, first released in 2005. Now almost twenty years later, the EP gets a full reissue, documenting some of the artist's most well-known hits.

Review: Rotterdam is one of the many big port cities around the world that welcomed a high number of Cape Verdean immigrants. In the 1970s, Americo Brito was one of them and he soon got involved with the local music scene and found an ever larger community of likeminded talents. He took to the stage with his band and made for a buzzy little scene that found them tour with their own sound system. Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

The results are beguiling from the off with Evelyn Saylor, Lyra Pramuk, Annie Garlid & Stine Janvin going for a loopy, multi-layered vocal version that is constantly ascending to heaven. There is more calm from Kali Malon who keeps it strictly ambient and Carlo Maria approximates peak time melodic techno but from a much more artistic rather than narcotic point of view.
