Review: He's as consistent as he is prolific so it's no surprise that Omar-S is back yet again with yet another EP well worth copping. This latest 12" direct from the Motor City features two different versions of the same tune and what a tune it is: first up is 'Can't Get' (vocal mix) which is signature stuff from Smith - dusty beats from an old analogue machine, slowly evolving synth leads that convey plenty of emotion and raw hi-hats. The mood is late night and sultry with a hint of menace and a gorgeous vocal hook is the icing on the cake. Flip it over and you'll get the Sub Mix with more stark synths and melodic edginess.

Review: It's been a long time since Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionised the word of first-person shooter video games. Graphically superior to anything that had come before it, the franchise also benefits from a spectacularly gripping storyline in which humans are outgunned and out-teched by a ruthless and uncompromising alliance of superiorly equipped alien races united as The Covenant. The titular Halo adds a kind of Prometheus air of uncertainty, as nobody really knows what it does until attempts to activate the galaxy-destroying weapon reveal something worse than death - a parasitic breed called the Flood. If all that was enough to blow everyone away in 2001, 2004 brought us to a whole new level of immersion in this future scape. Just like its predecessor, a big part of the impact was the visionary score by gaming soundtrack masters Martin O'Donnell and Michael Savatori. Now here it is in all its Gregorian chanting glory.

Review: The name 'Ocean Colour Scene' is an amalgamation of the eponymous band's three favourite words. This direct-democratic approach to band-naming should be an example to us all. But what of their music? 'Yesterday Today 1992-1997' compiles the West Midlands band's most eminent songs, which largely fall in the category of Britpop and indie. While commercial success for the group was limited (indeed bands like Oasis, Blur and The Verve were monopolizing the market), that says absolutely nothing about the quality of the music on this retrospective. Quite the contrary, actually; with selections spanning over ten studio albums, songs like 'Sway', 'Talk On' and 'Blue Deep Ocean' sound equally nostalgic and optimistic for a better musical future than now.

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has never been one for modesty, so we shouldn't be too surprised that he's called his latest full-length - his fifth in total - The Best. To be fair, he is rather good at producing high-grade deep house, and here unveils another eleven gems. Interestingly, he's recruited an impressive cast-list of collaborators and guests, including Norman Talley, Kyle Hall, OB Ignitt and, most surprisingly of all, Bristol-based Tom Bug. Highlights are plentiful, from the dusty afro and blues influences of the tribal "Chama Piru's", and hazy, Rhodes-heavy vocal cut "AhRevolution", to the hip-wigglin' disco-house influences of "Seen Was Set", and retro-futurist, Inner City style Divinity hook-up "On Your Way".

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

This album showcases Onuki's dynamic performance with a talented ensemble and a rich array of sounds from the original multi-tracks. Review: Originally released in 2011 as follow up to 2008's stellar career height Watershed, the tenth full-length from Swedish progressive death metal legends Opeth marked a notable turn, which the members had been desiring to take for some time. Heritage would be their first album since 2003's melancholic Damnation to completely eschew vocalist/guitarist/primary songwriter Mikael Akerfeldt's signature death growls, yet this decision wasn't so much in service of this one particular project as had been so in the past. Rather, this was the sign that the Scandinavian death metal elements of their core sound were ready to be laid to rest in favour of an embrace of the 70s prog rock the members grew up idolising. Drawing on the likes of Genesis, Yes and Rush, whilst allowing Akerfeldt's smooth cadence to lead the pieces, this is vintage, jazzy, complex yet undeniably groovy retro progressive rock of the classic era, complete with fuzzed out guitar lines, bizarre time signatures and an abundance of Hammond organ. Somewhat maligned by some of the fanbase while others lauded the brave and natural change in direction, this style would become the standard Opeth sonic aesthetic up until 2024's latest album The Last Will & Testament, which saw a return to their heavier death metal origins.
