Review: Freddie McGregor's 'No Competition', originally released in 1981, is a rare gem from the roots and lovers rock scene that has been gaining renewed attention in the underground. Now here reissued, this track showcases McGregor's smooth and timeless reggae style, reminiscent of Bob Marley's classic sound. Backed by the One Vibe Band, McGregor delivers a classy, uplifting reggae tune that radiates warmth and authenticity, marking it as a standout in his extensive catalogue. On the flip side, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals provide 'Don't Try It', an instrumental counterpart that offers a stripped-down version of the original. Their rendition is a deep, mostly instrumental dub version that emphasises rhythm and bass, allowing the groove to take center stage.

Review: Pretty ironic given its name, but the Rhythm Method has proved to be a highly fertile series for Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic label, what with this being the sixth instalment. On the A-side, O'Sullivan joins forces with Reformed Society for the gorgeously light touch techno workout 'Distant Voices', where snippets of voices and tinkling keys pepper what at first appears to be a sparse set foundations but over time reveals itself to be packed with tiny detail. On the B-side we get the dreamier 'Deep Drifting' by Rico Sante, where clouds of soft synths blow gently over an understated dub techno groove. Both are great.

Review: Whether you consider yourself a dub fan or not, you need to pay attention here, and, quite possibly, you need this record in your life. Simultaneously answering the never-asked question - what does Russian dub sound like? - while also refusing to adhere to pigeon holes and reductive categories, let's just say what's here is immersive, low-end heavy, incredibly-hook-y, and hallucinatory. It's also experimental and has avant-garde at its heart, setting out an individual stall that stays true to the genre while ignoring convention. It's also very important to point out the process involved. Although definitely not a concept album in that "boring but the idea is interesting and the way it was made is unique" kind of way, nevertheless all the tracks here were created during improvised live sessions. Despite what it sounds like, then, there are no samples, no edits, just actual instruments making noises. And it's great.

Review: Hot beer sounds pretty unappealing to those of us who don't live in warm climates, but "Hot Beer" is killer. Named after the fact that a warm beer actually cools you down more than a cold one, it's a rugged roots reggae roller from O.B.F. & Nazamba that is limited to 500 copies and comes with a well worth seeing animation. The slow motion grooves come laden with piano riffs and snaking bass that slows your heart beat to a crawl, and on the flip, the studio trickery is upped and plenty of effects make it an even more heady roller.

Review: Having wowed the world with his first two records, Objekt's arrival on Hessle Audio is a logical and welcome move. The wobbling bassline of "Cactus", premiered on Ben UFO's Rinse:16 mix, recalls Mala's savage productions, tweaking the oscillators just enough to make the bass scream whilst keeping things tasteful, despite its crazed metamorphosis into a raygun at the halfway point. Flipside "Porcupine" meanwhile is militant techno with all the purity and focus of Jeff Mills' best productions, a maelstrom of pummelling beats and swimming chords with a diamond-like beauty despite its pneumatic ferocity. In a word: essential.

Review: Astonishingly, "Chaos Game" is the eighth collaborative EP from Ohm (Bjarnar Jonsson) and Octal Industries (Jonas Thor Gudmundsson) since 2016. Like its predecessors, it offers a tough, club ready take on dub techno that peppers a variety of chunky, peak-time grooves with undeniably spacey elements. The best of the bunch - in our opinion at least - is opener "Breather", where dubbed-out synthesizer riffs and echoing chords bubble along over sparse beats before the Scandinavian pair bring in a heavy beat midway through. Elsewhere, "Strange Attractors" is hypnotic, odd and otherworldly, while closing cut "Creation" is the most dub-fired of the lot, largely because its hazy vocal samples and riffs pay tribute to soundsystem culture in the best possible way.

Review: Harem is the fourth release for Old Apparatus on their own Sullen Tone imprint, and the third to come from an individual member of the collective. This time it's the turn of Harem, who also lends their name to the release and provides one of the label's most atmospheric releases to date. "Sunday Service" places spectral female vocals in a desolate soundscape, while "Mernom" continues the funereal atmospherics with lumbering beats and acoustic instrumentation placed within a vast echo chamber. "Dourado" offers the most propulsive cut of the EP, with galloping drums and deep subs providing a steampunk take on classic dubstep, leaving "Octafish" to round off another superlative EP with a brooding combination of scorched strings and distant, simmering percussion.

Review: Round 2! Civil Music regular Om Unit returns with a second limited 10" pressing of edits from his personal armoury, deftly scaling the crawl space between mid 80bpm beats and the freneticism of 170+ bpm footwork. Both tracks here mirror the inaugural volume in being equally potent for last dance manoeuvres or heat of the moment swerve, and the focus of Om Unit's attention this time are two of European synth brethren's more hirsute alumni. It's pretty obvious from the grainy black and white artwork that adorns this plate whose the source material is, but Om Unit really flaunts his beat programming skills across both tracks, with dynamic button pushing underpinning the Aphrodite's child's sax play on "Le Singe". "Traum" is even more impressive with agile rhythms perfectly synced to the undulating cosmiche drama that unfolds.

Review: Alongside the multiplicity of releases on Civil Music and his own Cosmic Bridge label, Om Unit is also notable for the high concept series of edits released under the amusingly monikered Phillip D Kick alias. Essentially rewiring a slew of jungle classics to a juke/footwork template, these edits and his accompanying deconstruction of the motivation behind them demonstrated the producer to be far removed from the current crop of Soundcloud dwelling pretenders (we recommend you seek out his Rhythm Incursions post on the music). A new series of edits arrives with this limited ten inch that draws upon the producer's sizeable experience in the dusted beats world as 2Tall. "Vibes Is Right" is a real last dance special, merging a digi steppers beat to a sax laden moment from one of Reggae's most distinctive voices, whilst "Power Of Love" is dusted beatdown house vibes akin to Andres and Floating Points on the jam together.

Review: Classical violinist / low-end-murker Opus returns to his White Peach family with this four track treat after a few exemplary outings on the likes of Chestplate and Simply Deep. "This Damn Feeling" takes the lead and sets the mood with drama. Its big boom bass and tight spine sitar twangs are followed by a full menu of ideas and explorations. "Day & Age" wriggles with that high end harmonic we all fell in love with in 2008 before twinkling arpeggios bring on the goosebumps like you'd never believe. Flip for more goodies... "Ghost" takes us to the Upside Down with its toxic waste bass and icy vocal shots before "Renegade" concludes the EP on a dank, sludgy one. This damn EP!
