Plum Jam
Plum Jam (12")
Cat: MOISSWAX 008. Rel: 17 Jul 23

Disco/Nu-Disco
Berobreo - "White Rabbit" (5:19)
The Magic Track - "Jamming With Mom" (5:34)
Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

Moldoom (12")
Cat: ORKLX 96. Rel: 12 Aug 22

Electro
Conscio (5:14)
Rhytim (4:58)
Moldoom (5:41)
Spectral (6:22)
Review: 'Frankfurt Bass' specialist O Wells has been associated with Die Orakel since 2016, though this EP - the artist's fifth in total - is his first for the imprint for two years. Wells goes in hard from the word go, adding ragged, mind-bending TB-303 'acid' lines and intergalactic aural textures to a punchy electro beat on opener 'Consico'. Focus switches on the following track, 'Rhytim'[sic], where outer-space melodies and bubbly modular motifs are layered over a tighter electro beat. Side-B opens with the tracky, hypnotic, otherworldly techno of 'Moldoom', while the EP's concluding cut (IDM inspired number 'Spectral') boasts deep sub bass, Aphex Twin textures, subtle bleeps and oddly swung beats.

Picha (feat Jamie Paton remix & dub)
Cat: EES 046. Rel: 13 May 24

Deep House
Picha (7:22)
Picha (instrumental) (6:42)
Picha (Jamie Paton remix) (6:30)
Picha (Jamie Paton dub) (6:38)
Review: Odopt is back on Especial and this time is in collaborative mode with Sebastian Hoyos aka Sano, who is a regular on the likes of Matias Aguayo's Comeme and Munich's Public Possession. The pair cook up a fine globally-minded club trip that comes with another label return, this time from remixer Jamie Paton. The original 'Picha' first started as a sketch in 2016 then became a demo in 2019 now finally arrives on wax. It's a raw percussive workout with razor-sharp snares and plenty of cowbells. Next to an instrumental comes the Paton remix and it is a trademark deep and dubwise piece of work with widescreen dynamics.

Con Altura

Con Altura (2:41)
TKN (2:51)
Review: Orquesta Akokan returns with vibrant interpretations of Rosalia's hits 'Con Altura' and 'TKN,' showcasing their Grammy-nominated Cuban flair. Led by vocalist Jose 'Pepito' Gomez and featuring Cuban talent like lyricist Kiko Ruiz, known for his work with Buena Vista Social Club and Orquesta Maria Alejandra y Cubania, Orquesta Akokan infuses these tracks with a classic rawness sure to energize global dancefloors. The band's self-titled debut album, recorded live at Havana's historic Estudios Areito, embodies the Yoruba term "Akokan," meaning "from the heart." Produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth, this release on 7" encapsulates Akokan's heartfelt musical gift, blending originality with Cuba's rich musical heritage in every beat and melody.

You Make Me High (4:45)
Review: Elado has put out a fine run of eight releases in just two years on the likes of GAMM, Barefoot Beats and Bonfido Disques, but for his next move, he branches out with his own reissue label. its aim is to "focus on uncovering lost gems" with the original paired with his own remixes. The first one is a 1983 private press from the Canadian pair OUI. 'Circle Of Love' is a big disco banger with flashy synth work and rugged arps, with a pair of Elado's mixes making it even more dancefloor ready. 'You Make Me High' is a more sentimental 80s pop sound. The release has recieved support from a lot of artist, such as Gerd Jansen and Hunee. A fine start to life for this new label.

Surfin' UFO (Space Surfing mix) (6:42)
Temple Of Trance (7:26)
The Shape Of Things To Come (9:34)
Review: 3 track EP by Overlords of the UFO, including 2 previously unreleased tracks and one track released on an earlier EP named Transcendental Overdrive.

All tracks were produced in the late 90's.

This EP continues the trademark retro sci-fi analogue synth vibe of Overlords of the UFO and is the 2nd release by Enlightenment Records.

Groove Engine
Groove Engine (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CARDIOLOGY 010. Rel: 31 Jan 22

Disco/Nu-Disco
The Owl - "Groove Engine" (4:19)
C Da Afro - "I'm Gonna" (5:37)
Review: A tasty pair of chunky, beefed and dubbed up disco delights courtesy of the Cardiology label and every bit as likely to get the heart rate pumping as the name would suggest. The Owl's 'Groove Engine' steps up to the breach on the A-side, the slightly slower of the pair but blessed with a thumping framework of four-to- the-floor sturdiness on which funky keys and an almost Afro vibe are tastfully and decoratively hung. Flip track 'I'm Gonna' by C Da Afro is constructed from more archetypically traditional old skool disco ingredients, from the Sister Sledge-esque female vocals to the shooting, strings. There's a nice amount of dub behaviour via the desk, enough to elevate it into orbit but not so much that the song elements of the track are obscured. Nice work all round.

Good For Dance II
Cat: CMR 006. Rel: 20 May 24

Disco/Nu-Disco
Schmoltz - "Luv The States" (6:38)
Bogdan Ra - "Italocombo" (4:53)
Tell Me Why (RFX edit) (5:37)
Colosso (Outra edit) (5:45)
Review: Craft Music's Good For Dance series continues with its second instalment and this one has been curated by none other than DJ Craft himself. Joining him are talented pals Schmoltz, Bogdan Ra, Romain FX, and Outra, also known as Joutro Mundo. These deep diggers are celebrated for their prowess in unearthing hidden gems and transforming them into dancefloor anthems and that's what they do here as each artist brings a unique flavour to the mix. Schmoltz's 'Luv The States' is a peak-time percussive disco jam, Bogdan Ra brings some slap-funk drums and glossy Italo synths and 'Tell Me Why' has crunchy drums and jagged synth stabs before a camp closer in 'Colosso'.

State Of Flow
State Of Flow (Adam Pits remix)
State Of Flow (Armec remix)
Review: Following up that excellent Synchronicity on EP Phonica AM a couple of months back, hero of the Birmingham scene Subb An returns with more underground quality with this new one on the mighty 20/20 Vision. 'State Of Flow' is an emotive and breathtaking affair that's equal parts acid, progressive breaks and UK tech house with a seething Reese bassline lurking throughout that underpins angelic vocals. Over on the flip, remixes come from Adam Pits who takes you beyond the strobelights to reach for the lasers on his ravey take, followed by Armec's menacing experimental techno rework.

Correcciones Calypso 4
Cat: CC 004. Rel: 24 Apr 23

Disco/Nu-Disco
Youkounkoun - "Samoarabian" (6:50)
Inigo Vontier - "Transito" (6:11)
Thomass Jackson - "Traccident" (7:01)
Olta Karawame - "Folie Sans Dent" (6:05)
Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.
