Dark & Sinister (5:10)
Dark & Sinister (instrumental) (5:26)
Review: One of Armenian-born, London-based Blade's seminal cuts from the early 90s UK rap scene, capturing the gritty realism of the time. 'Dark & Sinister', featuring MC Mell'o', delivers a powerful, hard-hitting vibe akin to LL Cool J's commanding presence, with an instrumental version on the flip side allows the track's intense atmosphere and production to shine. Often seen as the grandfather of UK rap, Blade plays off a gritty persona with a wicked sense of humour, and this release still resonates today.

Slow Me Down (feat Douniah) (1:58)
Review: Melodiesinfonie, Bluestaeb and S. Fidelity join forces to form a powerful trio, unveiling a rich nonnet of tracks destined for the universal chillout space. Taking shape in a picturesque studio in the South of France - and then completed in centres from Zurich to Berlin - the likes of '365 P', 'Summertime In '92' and 'Just Give Me The Aux' carry on the sparse and material-sonic tradition that has in recent decades inflected the neo-soul and jazz-electronica worlds. Every track here sounds to have been made with what sounds to the most apparently humble means available; rimshot clicks, wooden hits, impassioned hums and coos, Rhodes chords here and there. Loyal to one rule and one rule only - "we need to stay in the room together to make this a record that feels exciting to us" - the result is an evenhanded five-track flirtation with soul-bearing passion, toeing the hobline of cool and hot.

Add Jamaica's Wayne Daniel on the vocals and another Portland native Madgesdiq on the conscious bars and there's a vibe that sits somewhere between Roots Manuva, YT and Wyclef. Yeah it's that toasty. The single comes with some on-point remixes by renowned DJs and producers like Rob Hardt, DJ Friction, and EFBNMXMIX who work it into different realms but all of them are still suited to summer gatherings, block parties, and smooth DJ sets. Review: The Soundbombing II compilation was a pivotal release from the late 90s hip-hop era and the track 'B-Boy Document '99' by The High & Mighty, featuring Mos Def and Skillz, stood out not just for its inclusion on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack but also for Mos Def's exceptional verse. His delivery, blending rapid-fire rhymes with intricate wordplay and a distinctive flow, solidified his status as a lyrical heavyweight. Even among a lineup of notable artists, Mos Def's performance on this track remains a standout moment in hip-hop history, showcasing his skill and artistry. Review: The Frosted label is back with more brilliance from Inland Knights in the form of this newly remastered version of the classic 'Figure It Out.' It was first put out back in 2013 as the first release on the label and remains a vital tune from the British pair. On the flip, Mark Farina is one of those hallowed producers who always has his own unique sonic signature, most famously under his Mushroom Jazz alias. His edit brings plenty of depth and broken beat lushness with noodling guitar riffs and spoken words making it a backroom gem.

Review: Eclectic Beats Music is building up a fine head of steam and the sixth outing is a tidy 7" featuring two red-hot Latin broken beat cuts. The opener is a collaborative remix from Born74 and Fradinho who do a superb job of flipping Jorge Ivan Martin's original gem 'Yo Tambien Baile La Conga' into something more contemporary with fresh broken beats, plenty of steamy Latin flavours all finished off in electric fashion with Frank Santiuste's trumpet solos. It is a welcome follow-up from South London's James Massiah who saw big success with his 2019 hit EP Natural Born Killers. It comes again on Jon Rust's Levels imprint and makes some of his most rich work yet. It autobiographically explores the peaks and valleys of 21st-century love, life, and relationships with seamless rap flows and signature neon beats that all take cues from dancehall, dub, acid house, grime, and leftfield pop. Gritty yet shimmering it is a great new addition to the UK's current rap scene.

Hot Winter (Dreaming About Being Closer) (3:46)
Review: James Massiah is already regarded by those in the know as one of London's most vital poetic voices and this potent two-tracker only serves to add weight to that reputation. It pairs lo-slung, richly textured beats with razor-sharp lyricism from the off with 'Holland Park,' produced by Shimz343, finding Massiah narrating a cryptic tale over lush strings and jagged rhythms that channel the great Gil Scott-Heron. On the flip, 'Hot Winter' drips with jazz poetry swagger, chopped flutes and dusty breaks with Massiah riding the beat with effortless fluidity. He proves himself a timeless narrator here, half street prophet, half storyteller, but a stylish, witty bridge between past and present with lyrical gravitas.

Review: Yet another early Masters At Work proto-jungle cut gets released on the inimitable Kay Dee recs. 'Blood Vibes' (Demo Version) is a desirous gemstone whose best facets reflect reggae, hip-hop and party breaks, though each side can only partially bend the unmissable light that is Kenny Dope" Gonzalez's production touch. Review: Of all the titles to choose from, 'Every Line On Point' is a smashing title. Rapper-veteran and producer extraordinaire MC Juice spells out his ultimate lyrical goal in titular form and subsequently delivers on it with a super nine-track album here. After nine long years comes the bombastic 'All Day' and the strutting 'Where You Go', establishing Juice's sophisticated crunk-influenced sound, which at once combines a sense of hip-ennui verbal finesse with still insatiable and easily apprehended lyrics: a hard balance to strike to say the least. 'All Day' marks the album's experimental turn, echoing Danny Brown or Vince Staples, albeit with a much archer, more knowing approach-to-the-game.

It was his 44th mixtape back then and one of his most classics with this jam, Medina Green's 'Crosstown Beef', one of the standouts. Review: Merwyn and Inkswel's latest is a refreshing blend of deep house and leftfield flair. The title track, 'Eternal Freedom', kicks off with a broken beat groove and a powerful vocal delivering a message about liberation, fusing deep house with an inventive rhythmic style. 'Cloud Eaters' follows with a soulful vibe that channels early 80s funk, creating an uplifting and nostalgic energy. 'Skyline' rounds out Side-1 with its own unique twist on house, pushing creative boundaries in style. On Side-2, Linkwood's remix of the title track injects a spacey disco vibe, layering a deep house groove with subtle funk elements that feel both classic and fresh. Gb's remix takes the track in a different direction, dialing back the energy with laid-back, 80s-inspired electro textures, offering a relaxed and introspective vibe. Together, these tracks deliver a dynamic and nuanced listening experience, perfect for fans of eclectic, message-driven house music.

Sugar Free (vocal) (4:38)

Review: Descendant, minor key seduction-funk from Miracle Thomas, whose sucrose and fructose levels are indeed incredibly low. A-sider 'Sugar Free' is a remake of Jarry Barnes and Katreese Barnes' brother-sister duet of the same name, which they made under the name Juicy, in turn a "response record" to Mtume's 1985 hit 'Juicy Fruit'. Miracle's miraculous new version brings the original 1985 number a heck of a long way, effectively conveying the newfound, cold-turkey loneliness felt during the day, presumably post-breakup. The dub on the B is a rare disco-funk-dub version too, perfect for those DJs preferring to segue into the more cosmic outer reaches of things.

Now re-released via Octave Lab, we're once again reminded of the American bandleader's easy wrist-flicking grooves and organ pumps, with the star tune here representing a simple framing of funk and soul at its most essential, without fluff or pomp. Review: Under-the-radar hip-hop issuers Modern Classics snaffle up Kendrick Lamar's bodying 2024 diss track to Drake, 'Not Like Us', pressing it to bootleg record only six months after its release. In one of the most compelling yet travestied hip-hop beefs of the 2020s - where it seems only the most high-profile heirs apparent to the crown of "greatest of all time" may indulge beefs at all, and in which the format's verbal blows have grown increasingly low -'Not Like Us' premiered only less than 20 hours after Lamar dropped 'Meet The Grahams', which had already taken aim at Drake's family history. With stringy hyphy flavours, portentous lyrical KOs, and an opening Sixth Sense reference (ahem, "I see dead people"), Lamar temporarily goes from crown-bearer to pallbearer here; it is said that Drake may never come back from this one, amid the many serious allegations levelled at him in the song.

Review: When asked in a 2023 interview why he hadn't contributed any production work to long-time collaborator Future's 2022 ninth full-length I Never Liked You, tireless hip-hop producer Metro Boomin revealed that he was aiming to save his beats for a potential collaborative album, which now appears to have been the plan all along. Marrying the aquatic, lysergic production style Boomin has helped to majorly popularise with Future's hazy, xanned out delivery, the duo deliver a trap opus weaving the most accessible and underground facets of the genre into one malleable set of fluid bangers, while the guest feature section boasts a who's-who of modern day hip-hop acts such as The Weeknd, Rick Ross, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. The project also would eventually be retconned as part one in their ongoing collaboration series with the follow up to We Still Don't Trust you dropping only three weeks later.

Review: Contemporary American stars rapper Future and record producer Metro Boomin make for a great combination, as they proved with their debut collaboration. We Still Don't Trust You is their second such work and is an even more impressive work with guest appearances from the likes of the Weeknd, Chris Brown, Brownstone, Ty Dolla Sign, J. Cole, Lil Baby, and ASAP Rocky. It's a double album with the first half being r&b-centric while disc two leans more into hip hop- and trap-focused beats with plenty of memorable tracks.

Review: Future and Metro Boomin's double-disc sequel, We Still Don't Trust You, is a revitalised exploration of their dynamic, pushing familiar ground into brighter and sappier spaces. Future swings between flexing his status and indulging in tear-soaked reflections, notably in tracks like 'One Big Family' and 'Mile High Memories.' Metro Boomin balances his brooding, maximalist beats with polished, r&b-inflected production, as heard on the synth-pop title track and the smooth 'All to Myself.' While the album is nearly 30 minutes more than its predecessor, Future and Metro shine when they venture out of their comfort zones, making the music both prettiest and nastiest. Standout moments, such as Kendrick Lamar's verse on 'Like That,' inject a sense of animosity and excitement. Overall, We Still Don't Trust You is an adventurous AAA rap album, focusing on heartbreak more than feuds.

Review: Originally, a landmark album in underground rap and a standout collaboration has since become a cornerstone of the genre. The album's chaotic, sample-driven production and intricate, stream-of-consciousness rhymes create a unique album that has grown in accolades as the years have gone on. The beats, blend jazz, experimental hip-hop and underground sensibilities, making tracks like 'Sickfit' and 'Do Not Fire!' stand out. DOOM's lyricism shines through, with brilliant flows and rhymes that elevate tracks like 'Money Folder' and 'Figaro' into hip-hop classics. The album's vibe is defiantly playful, with weed references and quirky samples, but it's the chemistry between Madlib's unconventional beats and DOOM's meticulous wordplay that sets this album apart. Despite leaks and delays, this record remains one of the genre's most influential works, showcasing both artists at their peak.

Review: A fascinating piece of hip-hop history, offering a glimpse into the creative process behind one of the genre's most celebrated albums. These demos, originally leaked in 2002, capture the raw energy and unfiltered brilliance of Madvillain's early sessions. MF DOOM's vocals, recorded and mixed at Madlib's Bomb Shelter studio, showcase his signature wordplay and off-kilter flow, while Madlib's beats provide a captivating backdrop of dusty samples and head-nodding grooves. Tracks like 'Do Not Fire!', 'Bistro', and 'America's Most Blunted' offer a fascinating glimpse into the album's evolution, with alternate versions and early arrangements showcasing the duo's creative process. While these demos may be unfinished, they still possess an undeniable magic, capturing the raw energy and unbridled creativity that would eventually make Madvillainy a hip-hop masterpiece.

Review: Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2 shares the release of new direct-to-disc album via Night Dreamer. Recorded alongside electrifying live band Sambadrive, the album revisits some of Marcelo D2's most important tracks, mining 25 years of groundbreaking music from the Brazilian legend, and capturing his now timeless 'samba hip-hop' sound in full flow. The aforementioned is an unusual yet compelling sound, marking the voice and style of a torchbearer and innovator, and not the last to be marked by the motto "looking for the perfect beat". Now, in 2024, D2 retells his story from a new perspective. Inspired by the iconic jazz-samba trios of the 60s and 70s, Sambadrive emerged from the improvised and often spontaneous jams that would preface Marcelo D2's live shows. Touring the world and reuniting with producer Mario Caldato Jr., the group dropped in on Haarlem's Artone Studio in October 2022 to record an album of 10 tracks, drawn from four of Marcelo D2's most loved albums.

Review: Roc Marciano's latest release, Marciology, marks a bold evolution in his career, pushing the boundaries of his already legendary wordplay and production skills. Since his 2018 masterpiece KAOS with DJ Muggs, Marciano has steadily explored new creative directions, and Marciology sees him refining that approach. While albums like Marcielago and Mt. Marci showed flashes of brilliance, Marciology feels like the natural next step for an artist deeply in tune with his own craft. What sets Marciology apart is Marciano's emphasis on lyrical precision. He has always been a poet in hip-hop, but here, his verses feel like they've reached a new level of intricacy. Almost entirely self-produced, with a bit of help from The Alchemist and Animoss, the beats reflect Marciano's distinctive style, serving as the perfect canvas for his lyrical explorations. The tracks aren't just songs; they're layered poems, rich in imagery and wordplay. Tracks like 'Marciology', 'Goyard God', and 'Gold Crossbow' shine with their raw energy and tight rhymes. On 'Gold Crossbow', Marciano drops one of the album's most memorable lines: "ain't gon' even hold you / There's no room on the scrotum, you gotta keep it mobile." It's these kinds of quotable moments that remind listeners of Marciano's unmatched lyrical prowess. While some might find the album's second half slower, this pacing allows the listener to fully absorb the depth of Marciano's wordplay. Every line is carefully crafted, offering new layers of meaning on each listen. It's not just about hooks or catchy choruses; Marciology is a deeper journey into Roc Marciano's mind, a celebration of his unique ability to blend street narratives with poetic flair. This album cements Marciano's status as a hip-hop innovator, one who continues to inspire and influence the genre. Marciology may not be a straightforward collection of bangers, but it's an album that rewards repeated listening and showcases an artist still pushing his craft forward.

Review: MC Money and Gangsta Gold's collaboration offers a glimpse into the hard-hitting underground sound of Memphis rap, capturing the raw energy and stark realities of the city in the 90s. The tracks feature gritty, no-frills vocals, driven by bass-heavy beats and shadowy synths that mirror the harsh streets of Frayser. The music remains unapologetically rough around the edges, yet there's an undeniable sense of purpose behind each trackian unwavering honesty that demands attention. It's not just about the aggressive delivery or tough subject matter; it's about a snapshot of a time and place that continues to resonate. Each beat pulses with a sense of urgency, while the lyrical content cuts straight to the heart of Memphis' rap scene, without pretense or over-production. There's something undeniably compelling about its rawnessia reminder of the power of minimalism when it's done with conviction.

Review: As those following the music press (or what's left of it) will be aware, Megan Thee Stallion has been through a lot in recent years, with the Houston rapper's ascent to global superstardom being accompanied by struggles with grief and betrayal. It's perhaps not surprising, then, that her fourth album, MEGAN, is particularly spiky - both lyrically and musically - with the Texan responding to personal set backs by lashing out at online culture, perceived rivals, former collaborators (yes, Charli XCX does not escape criticism), and "sad girl shit". It not only confirms her place as a top-tier rapper - her lyrics are frequently b breathtakingly brilliant and jaw-dropping in their no-holds-barred intensity - but also one happy to do her thing over decidedly weighty beats, sub-heavy basslines and surprisingly minimalistic arrangements. A triumph, as expected.

Review: Megan Thee Stallion's third studio album, 'Megan', marks her debut as an independent artist and reveals her personal truths with unflinching candor. The project opens powerfully with the chart-topping single 'Hiss', setting a bold tone. As the album unfolds, tracks like 'Rattle' and 'Figueroa' feature sharp disses and familiar themes.Megan shines in pieces like 'B.A.S.' and 'Otaku Hot Girl', where she demonstrates her lyrical strength and clever references. The album shifts towards introspection with 'Moody Girl' and 'Cobra', where she grapples with darker emotions, ultimately showcasing her vulnerability. Although some songs feel like straightforward rap without innovation, the overall structure is cohesive, with each track building on the last. While the polished album artwork contrasts with the rawness of the content, Megan is a strong effort. It is a worthwhile listen that captures Megan's multifaceted identity as an artist.

Review: MF Doom's 2004 release marked a high point in the hip-hop don's discography, brimming with his signature blend of inventive production and intricate wordplay. Across the album, he uses food-related metaphors to delve into themes of vice, violence, and the complexities of ego. 'Beef Rapp' opens the record with a sharp critique of conflict within hip-hop, while tracks like 'Hoe Cakes' and 'One Beer' explore indulgence, escapism, and excess with Doom's trademark wit. The track 'Rapp Snitch Knishes' is a direct jab at the contradictions of self-incrimination, highlighting the absurdities of some rappers' behavior. With its blend of humour, sharp social commentary and a deft lyrical style, this album remains a standout in the genre, demonstrating Doom's ability to layer serious themes with a playful touch.

Following its success and their 2022 album, After Dinner We Talk Dreams, the band expanded their horizons and headed out on tour across the US and Europe with artists like Gus Dapperton, Arlo Parks and Mitski. For their new album, Songs About You Specifically, Michelle retreated to a house in Ojai, California. Immersed in the serene desert surroundings, they found a new sense of solitude and intimacy and this shift is reflected in their music, which now embraces starry shoegaze, funk and 80s synth pop.

Review: Michi Guerrero aka Michi sets upon unleashing her debut album Dirty Talk unto the world. The LA-based singer-songwriter begun in pop before finding her truer feet in making warm neo-soul, in which discipline she has remained. Backing up a recent throng of exquisite Knxwledge flips of her earliest singles, the new record documents productions of a near-equal calibre from Blake Rhein (Durand Jones & The Indications) and Paul Cherry. Retroistic, channelling a Motown-reminiscent sound, the lyrics deal in interpersonal dilemmas unique to the modern day; hear the a-romantic de-subjectvations of 'If You Want Me' and the existentialisms of 'There's No Heaven', the latter being a prize house music cut, not to be missed by DJs.

His sharp, introspective lyrics resonate with authenticity, recounting life's struggles over boom-bap beats that feel both nostalgic and fresh. The production complements his style, layering raw, rhythmic foundations beneath his reflective verses. This release is a throwback to when hip hop was more about narrative and substance than spectacleipacked with depth, grit and realness. It's a return to form that will satisfy fans of classic, unfiltered rap.

Tomorrow Will Never Know
Review: This second posthumous album from the late Mac Miller dropped in 2018 after being recorded but never released back in 2014. In some ways, it joins the dots between his early career style - an earnest rapper with plenty of attitude - and the more thoughtful songwriter he became in later life. There is still plenty of sadness and melancholy hidden between the beats and amongst the lines of these tunes which are built on keys, drums and bass with only the subtlest of production tweaks. 'Do You Have A Destination?' is a richly layered sound with fragment vocals, 'Stoned' is woozy and deep with gorgeous guitar licks, 'Funny Papers' showcases Mac's unique vocal stylings over more trad beats and 'Manakins' is another smudged late night sound with a heartfelt undertone.
