Review: Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg returns to Altin Village & Mine with Cosmic-Astral, his second album as Memory Pearl. Inspired by a 1970s psychotherapeutic music program used alongside LSD, he reimagines its classical compositions through electronic manipulation and using MIDI transformations of works by Strauss and Scriabi. Review: Heroes & Villains is the long-awaited new album from Metro Booming and fans will not be disappointed. The widescreen and cinematic long player features the likes of Chris Brown, Travis Scott, The Wknd, 21 Savage, John Legend and Don Tolliver so really does draw on the best of hip-hop talent. The 15 tunes flow well despite the many different names on it and intricate yet accessible beats define much of the rhythms. There are dramatic and dark moments next to moments of real hope with plenty of humility from Metro along the way.

Review: Joe Mount of lovable scuzz pop outfit Metronomy mans the latest volume in the long running Late Night Tales, a series who always seem to get the best results out of an unexpected cast of participants (Belle & Sebastien, MGMT, Trentemoeller and Midlake being recent inductees). It's hard not to get sucked in from the sugar sweet opening of Outkast's "Prototype", which is the first of several tracks that demonstrates Mount has a penchant for slow bumping R&B and outsider hip-hop with Tweet, Sa Ra and a Dr Octagon classic also appearing. A typically far reaching approach to genres applies here with the cosmic jazz of Chic Corea happily mingling with Autechre and Two Lone Swordsmen, and American synth oddities Geneva Jacuzzi and Appaloosa mingling for attention with The Alan Parsons Project and Herman Dune. The de-rigueur cover version arrives with a Metronomy rendition of Jean-Michel Jarre's "Hypnose" while Paul Morley ends the selection with a spoken word piece. This vinyl edition has 18 of the tracks spread separately across two plates as well as the mixed CD and a booklet!

Review: Nathan Micay's new album comes across several formats, with this being the black wax version. To The God Named Dream also comes with artwork that doubles up as an original multi-player board game that it is, according to the artists behind it, a hybrid of Jumanji and Hellraiser. "I listened to a lot of pop through the pandemic from Taylor Swift, Caroline Polachek and "Rain"-era Madonna and wanted to synthesise these references with my score work and downtempo and club music." He's made a good job of it too on what is his first album since 2020's The World I'm Going To Hell For. Live banjo and live breakbeats sit with 808 bass hits, big trance synths and plenty of melodramatic grooves.

Review: Michelle's first project, 2018's Heatwave, celebrated the vibrant energy of New York City where all six band members grew up. Following its success and their 2022 album, After Dinner We Talk Dreams, the band expanded their horizons and headed out on tour across the US and Europe with artists like Gus Dapperton, Arlo Parks and Mitski. Review: The ninth studio album by contemporary hip-hop favourite MIKE, Burning Desire, drops in multiple formats, here on CD with a characteristically GTA-referencing front cover. The CD edition makes for a huge new project spanning over 20 new cuts as well as a swath of B-sides dedicated to his production moniker DJ Blackpower, making for a comprehensive distillation of MIKE's smog-packed sound and universe. The concept behind Burning Desire is titular; a vengeful fantasy delivered in a miasma of sonic hash smoke, alluded to cryptically most notably on the tracks 'Set The Mood' and 'Plz Don't Cut My Wings', featuring Earl Sweatshirt; the overarching mood is one of whimsical largesse, as if MIKE's goal is to pull the wool over the listener's ears, ironically assuring us of a cool kosher breeze, while his flip side nonetheless gets down to the dirtiest of business.

Review: When rapper and multi-instrumentalist Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose in 2018, he left behind an unfinished two-part album project: "Swimming" (released last year) and "Circles", which has now landed on wax after getting a digital release earlier in 2020. It's a musically diverse and mostly introspective affair, with Miller shuffling between styles wearily and switching roles (singer-songwriter, rapper, multi-instrumentalist, beat-maker) seemingly at will. While such role hopping could have resulted in a sonic mess, the set sounds surprisingly coherent, not least because the thread running through it all is Miller's painful soul searching and well documented mental health issues. As a posthumous full stop to a life ended all too soon, "Circles" certainly hits home hard.

Review: Originally released in 2016, just one year after his major label breakout GO:OD AM; the fourth LP from the late, great Mac Miller showcased a remarkable pivot from quick-witted, slightly offensive alternative hip-hop bangers to a more introspective and vulnerable style of neo-r&b. Written whilst in a relationship with pop megastar Ariana Grande (who also features on the record as well as being credited for the inspiration to the track 'Cinderella'), the project focuses on both external romantic love as well as love of the self and one's surroundings. With an impressive guestlist featuring Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Ty Dolla Sign, and exuding Miller's first declarative foray into more nuanced, melodic and lush soundscapes, the album remains an outlier in an immensely expansive discography, which sadly still feels as if it was only just beginning to blossom before Miller's tragic and untimely passing.
