Hang 'Em High (limited hand-numbered 7")
Cat: JAMWAX 30. Rel: 10 Aug 21

Roots/Lovers Rock
Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:07)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:18)
Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Cheyenne's Comin' - "Come Back To Me"
Hanson - "Take Me To Your Home"
Review: Blackcat repress this 2009 45" and its spread remains as broad and beautiful as it did five years ago. "Come Back To Me" takes us back to 1976 as Native American soul girl Cheyenne's rich, gut-driven delivery tops a seriously tight funk cake that's flavoured with blistering horns and crisp guitars. "Take Me To Your Home" takes us even further back to 1973. Taken from their debut album Now Hear This, it's a sparkling, jazz-tinted psychedelic slice that harbours some seriously warm keys. Guaranteed to remain broad and beautiful for a long, long time to come. Grab it while you can.

Combo Guarajeo - "Alamo" (2:08)
Hermanos Vargas - "Oye Mulata" (3:23)
Review: For their latest release, Mexican reissue specialists Discodelic take us back to Alajuela, Costa Rica, in the mid 1970s, and the sweltering, cross-cultural fusion works of the Vargas brothers and their short-loved Combo Guarajeo. Our pick of an extremely strong pair is A-side 'Alamo', a sweet and jangling take on Latin funk blended with distinctive Guaguanco and psychedelic soul influences. It's humid, colourful and classy, and original copies of the record it first featured on are almost impossible to find. There's a more straightforward, central American take on Afro-Cuban music on side B, which we think - but have yet to confirm - has never previously been released. It, too, is a treat for the ears.

JC Davis - "A New Day (Is Here At Last)" (3:10)
Hell Razah - "Project Jazz" (feat Talib Kweli & MF Doom) (3:47)
Review: The Originals label always does a grand job of pairing the sweetest source material with its famous sampling counterpart, and most importantly they put the originators up front on the A side. This time around they're celebrating the ascendant jazz funk masterpiece 'A New Day (Is Here At Least)' by legendary saxophonist JC Davis, originally released in 1969 and sounding fresh to this day. On the flip comes an open-hearted approach to the iconic brass licks courtesy of Hell Razah, with none other than Talib Kweli and MF Doom in full flow over the top for the impeccable 'Project Jazz' from 2007. Two absolutely golden sides on a perfect little 45, what's not to love?

Dr Octagon - "Bear Witness" (3:29)
Handsome Boy Modelling School - "Holy Calamity" (4:02)
Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Handsome Boy Modelling School then link up for the flip side 'Holy Calamity' which is another floor filler with bold brass and mad scratching. Both tunes hark back to a golden era of rap and will get any floor pumping.

Free Association - "Free Sensation"
Hristo - "Heat Market"
Review: Edmonton crew Common Edit resurface with their first 7" treat in almost a year with Andrew Allsgood's Free Association and Honey Disco's Hristo sharing sides. As with all Common Edit releases it's a record of two halves with the Hristo production floor worthy whilst the Free Association track one for more horizontal situations. It's hard to describe "Free Sensation" as anything other than dreamy, with Allsgood revealing a dubby adventure into sumptuous dancefloor disco funk with some absolutely killer filtering. A decidedly more taut sensation runs through "Heat Market" from Hristo which is some uncredited, rigid disco funk perfect for the more cosmically minded selectors.

Front Office - "Wow" (2:14)

Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

It is designed for the advanced dance floors out there and features 'Lalo Shuffle' which is a rework of the main theme from the original Planet Of The Apes film. Outta My Head (feat John McCallum) (3:42)
Give Me Something Better (feat John McCallum - Werkha remix) (4:00)
Review: Northern collective The Haggis Horns have been at the forefront of the UK funk scene since they came to prominence as a horn section on the legendary album "Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds" in 2001. They then went on to form their own full band in 2004 and have three albums under their belt: "Hot Damn!", "Keep On Movin" (First Word Records) and recently released "What Comes To Mind" (Haggis Records). They've been rocking crowds the world over for years winning fans with their signature sound that crosses over with breakbeats, afrobeat, soul and hip-hop. The seven piece band call upon John McCallum on vocals and guitar for the absolute funk explosion that is "Outta My Head" while on the flip their track "Give Me Something Better" gets a lovely rework by Manchester's nu-jazz broken beat wunderkind Webkha.

King Clyde - "Request Line" (5:08)
Dream Lovers - "For Belgian Friends" (6:24)
The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Let's Party (3:06)
Review: The Half-Truths come on strong here with a deep funk banger on tidy 45rpm. This is full throttle funk music with everything tune dup to 1. The drums race along at high speed, the sax leads are floored and expressive and the vocals yelp out of the mix to add fuel to the fire. That's the case on 'We Party', at least, but it is 'Let's Party' on the flip that then goes slower, with more room for the gorgeous keys to shine and some cosmic synth work to bust out. Potent stuff.

Now they look to Trinidad where Stan Chaman's Semp label originally presented the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' back in 1978. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

Review: Freestyle 'Turn Up The Music' courtesy of this new 12" from Roy Hamilton, Cosmo Bowen and Dennis Palmer. The trio worked together way back in the 80s and back then it was as part of a nine-piece outfit known as Breeze. Anyone who attended the iconic Ronnie Scott's in London back then will probably have heard them play upstairs with the likes of Hi Tension and Gonzalez. In 1984 they decided to lay down this one and only 12" on the HBS label they ran. It's a stomper but a laid-back one that is now well in demand on the funk and soul scene.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. On the A side, Hansi respectfully resplices a bumpin' and super soulful underground goodie on "Party Is A Gruv", while over on the flip you've got a timeless R&B anthem that's paired perfectly with a love of the wacky backy on "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) by the boss man himself Lego Edit.

Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. The record initially appeared on Hawes' own short-lived imprint, and his since become a sought after 7" amongst serious collectors. And he's still nailing it at the grand old age of 88. Two new instrumentals, both "Just A Little Bit Of Everything" and "Perdido Street" rolls with an authentic jazzy swing that sings to all eras and decades. Seeds Of Life (feat Eddie Palmeri) (5:09)
Review: Legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri took a rare groove excursion from his Latin legacy in the early 70s for two albums as Harlem River Drive. Criminally overlooked, Soul Brother have dusted off two of the many highlights from his self-titled debut; "Idle Hands" is a sleazy, Gaye-style message with an almost spoken word quality to the vocals and a smoky wooziness to the horns while "Seeds Of Life" is a real end-of-set belter that rises and rises with tight orchestration between the guitar, horns and drums. Incredible... This can't be slept on this time round.

This time they opt for a big and airy soul sound from The Harmony Cats. They were an all female vocal quintet that hailed from Sao Paulo and banded together in 1976. Most prolific in the disco days, the b-side here is their best known tune outside of Brazil. It's got a cosmic breakbeat and light vocals that soar to the skies. Tokyo Blue
Review: After dropping an album of drop-dead classic jazz, rock and latin fusion with the self-titled The Fusion Experience, this single brings the remixes to the fore with some great versions of album tracks plus an edit too. Ray Harris' original of Scaramunga sounds like a long lost relic from an undiscovered vault of jazz and freakbeat classics, like a fusion between Charles Mingus, The Doors and Tito Puente. The basic piano pattern stays the same while the rest of the band vamp around it, with Harris laying down some sick organ sounds over the top combined with layers of percussion. Lack of Afro's remix however strips everything down to the essentials, making the guitar and bass carry the riffs while more robust beats are craftily laid on top. His mix of Freedom is even more drastic, as he incorporates a more 4/4 disco swing to the drums, adds a cool breakdown similar to Dennis Coffey's Scorpio and then takes the tune into a cover of SOUL's Burning Spear!
Unexpected, but thoroughly cool.

With a further tune from Harris's album included here, the breezy Rotary Connection-influenced Tokyo Blue, this whole release is a great fusion of influences coming together. See how many you can spot?

'Only Two People In The Sea' is super slow and seductive, steamy and sexual funk with a brilliantly lazy groove. Long held synth strings, melodic curlicues and rising chords all add layer upon layer of lushness that lives mind, body and spirit to the heavens. As it turns out, this is some marvellously constructed soul music, right from the heart and soul, with "Cold Turkey Last Time" and "Trackin' Down" containing all the elements of fine ballads that are both future-proof and utterly stand-out. Check it and don't wreck it.

The Scorpio Walk (4:54)
Message Of Love (4:01)
Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.

The Counts - "Motor City" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:18)
Review: This new hand-numbered 7" from Breaks & Beats is a sample hunter's delight. Two timeless funk gems with super deep vibes and lush vocals that have been pillaged by hip-hop and R&B artists many times over the years. On the a-side is a special extended Breaks Special edition edit of The Headhunters - 'God Make Me Funky' with its super tight drumming, languid bass funk and epic sense of late-night cool. On the reverse is another special extended Breaks Special edition edit, this time of The Counts's playful and funk gem 'Motor City' with its big fills and steamy sax lines.

Little Sister (part 1) (3:02)
Little Sister (part 2 - instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Some sizzling deep funk business here from TRAMP Records, as the venerable German reissue imprint offers a fresh pressing of an obscure 1975 single from Walt Maddox's Super M label. It was Maddox who produced "Little Sister", though little is known about the band that recorded it. The A-side "Part 1" vocal version is superb. It features addictive group vocals, prominent flute solos and the kind of wah-wah-heavy, flash-fried deep funk grooves that were all the rage at the time. The flipside "Part 2 (Instrumental)" mix strips away the lead vocal, emphasizes the groove further and gives greater prominence to the flute and organ parts. It's great, too, though we still prefer the A-side.

The Greatest Love Story (4:31)
Review: This single is taken from the only studio album from US soul/rare groove duo Heaven Sent & Ecstasy, originally released back in 1980. P-Vine reissued it as CD in 2006, but this is the first time it has been released on 7' format. Features the well known track 'I'm A Lady' newly edited as single version, in addition to 'The Greatest Love Story' on the flip which is taken from their only album of the same name. A highly treasured album with strong appeal to collectors.

Review: "That Kind Of Man", by The Heavy, is more or less what would have happened if Curtis Mayfield had stumbled across a demo of Led Zeppelin's Trampled Underfoot. This is an amazing Evil Kitty release.
