Spacer Woman From Mars
Cat: LOEB 007. Rel: 11 Mar 08

Disco/Nu-Disco
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro - "Spacer Woman From Mars"
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro/Rude 66 - "Deeper Space Woman"
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro/Elitechnique - "Outer Space Woman" (parts 1 & 2)
Johan Agebjorn - "Mega Man II"
Review: Taken from the recent, highly acclaimed 'Milky Disco' compilation on Lo Recordings, 'Spacer Woman' is a scintillating slab of hi-octane,
Italo space-disco. Created by Johan Agebjörn, who was responsible for all the production on Sally Shapiro's 'Disco Romance' album, the
12" includes remixes by Rude 66 and Elitechnique which take it even deeper into space and onto nu-disco dancefloors. Dutch electro
artist Rude 66, with releases on labels like Viewlexx, Bunker and Crème Organization, previously remixed Sally's hit 'I'll Be By Your Side',
receiving plenty of club play from DJs like The Hacker and Tiga. His take on this 12", titled 'Deeper Space Woman', is a slow and deep,
dubby trip which will work well as a start-up for slower DJ sets. Dutch duo Elitechnique, with releases on Clone and Radius and earlier
remixes for Black Devil Disco Club and Alden Tyrell, take the track into a nu-disco dancefloor monster called 'Outer Space Woman' with
additional backing vocals by the Dutch actress Loes. The 12" ends with a wicked sidechain dance version of a computer game track,
'Mega Man II re-mix' by Johan Agebjörn, here without Sally's vocals but with vintage 8bit sounds. Sally Shapiro's debut album 'Disco
Romance' was released in 2007 and received excellent reviews from magazines like Pitchfork Media, Vice, Der Spiegel and XLR8R. It
was recently nominated as 'electronic/dance album of the year' by U.S. Plug Awards and Sally was nominated as 'female artist of the year'.
'Spacer Woman From Mars' was originally intended for 'Disco Romance', but was taken out because of its space rather than love theme.

Breakwater - "Release The Beast"
Edwin Birdsong - "Cola Bottle Baby"
Review: Two more of the most famous tracks sampled by Daft Punk get pressed up on this cheeky little 7 inch. Breakwater's "Release The Beast" is unmistakably the blueprint for "Robot Rock" while "Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong was liberally sampled by Guy-Manuel and Tommy B on "Harder Better Stronger Faster". Both delicious funky disco cuts in their own right and great fun to drop!

Starwaves (Jimpster remix)
Starwaves (Spirit Catcher's Time Modulator mix)
Review: Can DeGiorgio kick some shit or what?? 'Starwaves' is so the electro house sound of now coupled with an authentic 1980s electro vibe that not many besides Kirk could properly pull off. Fans of New Order in particular will love the sequenced basslines and rolling synth arpeggiations used throughout, slaved to a tough 4/4 groove. The breakdown features a wicked voicebox riff ala Cameo's Roger Troutman- brilliant!! The remixes start with Jimpster's string-driven Moroder inspired reworking for the Francisco/Marco Passarani fans out there while Spirit Catcher delivers for the more traditional deeper house heads with a crisp soulful revamp adding some choice vocal bits and a crisp, slinky groove.

Void People
JM Beats (7 The Night Goes On)
Review: Jack Haighton takes a break from his duties as label manager for Scuba's Hotflush to indulge his love of Italo Disco on the new Editions Haighton label. The press release for this inaugural 12" lays out Edition Haighton's mission statement quite clearly: deliver those homespun edits of dusty curios that were once Jack's secret weapons to the jocks serving out on the front line. Planned as a quarterly series, this first installment hits the spot and features a rather fine reworking of mid '80s spacesynth odyssey "Void Vision" from Cyber People. In the hands of Haighton, the track is given a contemporary overhaul that makes it suitable for arpeggio loving techno DJs, and much the same can be said of his B Side treatment of one off Italo hit "Computer Monkey" by JM Band.

Naxa
Review: Continuing the Merc theme of ensuring the focus remains on the music, Mark E taps his local market for a debut double drop straight out of the Black Country Underground. Information is all too sparse on Edward (possibly the least house name out there) but who cares when the music is this good! Supposedly culled from a CDs worth of tracks left on the door step of casa de Mark E, both tracks here perfectly fit the Merc sonic ethos of pressurised house. "Maxa" splays skewed disco samples over rippling 4/4 programming and even works in the sound of the local constabulary. Anyone who indulged in the recent and rather excellent Mark E Ghostlycast mix to coincide with his debut album will be familiar with the lolloping, filtered brilliance of "Naxa" - a track which establishes this mysterious entity as a true talent.

Antal has already been dropping the worldly beats on this EP which is a fine stamp of approval for Israeli DJ and collector Elado. This marks his debut on the label having won plenty of fans for his offering on Eddie C's cult Red Motorbike. The music take its cues from all over the planet - Africa, India and the Middle East - and brims with disco joy, funk richness and plenty of earthly soul. 'Big Baba' is a classy party starter with good time feels, 'Gulab Jamun' is a foreign language acid laced love song and 'Blame' is synth heavy disco funk.

Night With You
A Space Connection
Soon As The Stars
Review: Considered by those in the know to be one of the founding fathers of Dutch electronic music, Rick Van Breugel makes returns to his rare Electrick Dragon alias for a superlative debut on the Cyber Dance imprint with Space Connection. Hardly the most prolific of labels, Cyber Dance releases are invariably Italo Disco worthy of your attention and the three tracks here ensure this status quo remains! Tough and rough, "Night With You" finds room amidst the flexed drums and thick arpeggiated groove to drop some romantic Italo vibes for the lovers out there, whilst some sort of odd laser FX on the two adds that extra degree of individuality to the gleefully effervescent exercise in constantly building joy that is the title track. Final track "Soon As The Stars" is a production that could only have emerged from the Lowlands, the ever present outer galactic synth work and subtle yet intricate tape saturated percussion complemented by key lines that spiral in and out of focus with hypnotic intent.

Review: With over a dozen releases on DC Recordings, as well as numerous remixes for the likes of Daft Punk, Royksopp, Moby, Simian Mobile Disco, Stephen Malkmus, Random Factor and more, it is with great pride that we present a new discoid emission from The Emperor Machine. Appropriately, 'Slap On' is a racy polyrhythmic affair that deals in endless climax. Veins will swell, circuits will smoke, the listener tumbles through a vortex of analogue filters and oscillators towards a heady crescendo. The flipside 'Gang Bang' will soothe and relieve after such orgiastic fury. A punk funk groove of sinister refinement.

System Seven Hundred
Review: It's been a while since Andrew 'Chicken Lips' Meecham has had his old Emperor Machine running, but it's still purring with cosmic style. "Like A Machine" struts and squiggles the perfect soundtrack to a robot fashion parade. With layers of dubbed out instruments weaved over a rich analogue stomp, it's an instant hypno-groove. Andrew Weatherall's remix really needs little description; stripped back, angular and acidic, it's the Asphodeller at his starkest and darkest. "System Seven Hundred" ends on a slow, rich note as pokey synth strikes play echo location against each other before a mischievous bassline slinks in and steals the show.

XXXO: Manchester England 1983
Review: In 1984 Street Sounds released the experimental "UK Electro" album as part of their now legendary 'Electro Series'. All but one of the tracks on this 'compilation' were written and produced by the same nucleus of people, although the labels owner, Morgan Khan, came up with an array of fictitious names for the album credits, giving the impression of a thriving British electro movement. The trio behind the lion's share of "UK Electro" were Greg Wilson - a pioneering DJ who'd championed electro via his cutting-edge nights at venues including Wigan Pier and The Hacienda - Martin Jackson, formerly a drummer with the band Magazine, and Andy Connell, the keyboard player with A Certain Ratio (Connell and Jackson would later go on to chart success, having formed Swing Out Sister).

Issued for the first time, as a limited edition 12", "XXXO" is a slice of British dance history, which has been described, in hindsight, as 'proto acid house'. By complete accident, Wilson, Jackson and Connell had anticipated the direction that dance music was destined to take, but the track would never see the light of day, with only record company and DJ contacts, along with friends and family, getting to hear the demo back then.
