Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Review: The third in Prescription's From the Vaults series is perhaps the most crucial to date, delivering a clutch of veritable classics from the label's archives. Proceeding kick off with the timeless Latin house swing of the Mericana remix of A Man Called Adam's "Que Tal America" from all the way back in 96 - check that sax! Alongside it is Chuggles aka UK house don Ralph Lawson's collaborative effort with Chez Damier brings the searing Chicago emotion via the chord heavy bump of "Thankyou". Mr Damier owns the B Side too, in conjunction with fellow house icon Ron Trent with two of their finest works - "The Meaning" in particular is worthy of purchase alone.

Review: The good time vibes flow freely on this new 12" from Art of Tones alongside Chatobaron. It is classy house that is funky - rather than the much-maligned funky house, that is. 'Ban The Disco' will in fact light up the disco with its funky riffs and swaying claps. 'Flight Of The Comet' picks up the pace with busy stick work and steamy, almost porno-style, sax motifs. There is a louche, low-slung freedom to 'Pendant Ce Temps A Vera Cruz' and plenty of happy piano stabs to light up the slinky house of 'La Chatte Au Baron.' A Drum Tool closes this most authentic of disco-house EPs.

Review: Is there a more fun and hard-to-pin-down label than Studio Barnhus? The plaything of Swedish artists Kornel Kovacs, Axel Boman and their mate Petter Nordkvist it has done it all from trancehall to bubblegum house via pop edits and plenty in between. Now they look to Stockholm boys Ari Bald & CJ Scott once more for a new EP that bangs hard and has a great sense of character, much like their label debut here last year. Review: Harness & Spencer don there capes once more to save the dancefloor, providing some of that deep satisfying soulful house for the remix. The very minimal approach to the track serves the purpose perfectly, especially the funk-driven drum sequencing, this remix is more about the groove and movement which will surely have the crowd looking over your shoulder trying to sneak a peek for the artist info and release date. On side B, "Original" - BTG are Nick Santillan and Charles Spencer, this duo have been working together for many years putting out tasty dancefloor treats on Charles Spencer's Loveslap imprint. Santillan a Chi-town native and Spencer a Cali native thru the good graces of music/internet technology have been cooking up their forthcoming LP on Loveslap for the past year or so. This, the first single of the LP, kick starts with an Afrobeat smoker to set the mood, you'll definitely feel the upbeat guitar playing that signifies that this tune is all about having a good time. The strong commanding voice and vocals of Carla Prather will surely catch your attention - " whatcha' gonna do about it " ??!! Dance!!!

Review: Christos Antoniou aka C. Da Afro has been serving up his heartfelt house and disco sounds for almost a decade now. A prolific producer with almost 30 EPs to his name, his latest one for Sound Exhibition opens with a fine disco and house fusion. 'Outside The Box' is a floor-filling jam with big house drums that throw it back to 90s New York. Dazzling cosmic synths further light up the grooves with some well placed vocal samples. 'Speed Dial' then gets all mad funky, with chunky, heavy drums and an impassioned vocal that is raw, unfiltered and lived in. Two real party starters for New Year's Eve and beyond.

Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Review: For their label's second release, the team behind Brooklyn-based underground Japanese music specialists Bitter Lake Recordings has turned to early '80s electronic experimentalist C.Memi. Heavenly Peace is not a new release, though, but rather a first 12" edition of a sought-after 1983 EP. There's something especially pagan about the stark tribal drums, creepy synthesizer motifs and dead-eyed vocals of opener "Ishin-Denshin", while "C'est Une Chanson" a DIY take on French lounge-pop that features far more accordion than your average minimal wave workout. Arguably best of all, though, is flipside lead cut "Hilojichi", where Medi's sparse and weird vocals ride a druggy backing track full of mental white noise stabs, mind-altering keytar solos and a notably dark arpeggio line.

Review: When Cabaret Voltaire returned to the release schedule in 2020 as the one-man Richard H Kirk show, fans were relieved to find that mind-bending meld of 1970s Kosmische, techno, dub, house and space-age experimental electro was as pure as it ever has been - the results being a typically fresh and forward-thinking record the man in question summed up as "no nostalgia... normal rules do not apply. Something for the 21st Century. No old material."
Less than six months later and the big CV has more next level business to offer us, coming in the form of Shadow of Funk, a new EP that offers something of a counterpoint or extension to last year's full-length, Shadow of Fear. Based on 'Billion Dollar' alone - an acid-driven big, dark room banger that closes this EP -this release looks set to make an equally heavy impact, but as with anything this man touches, the joy is in discovery. So, let's leave it at that.

Review: Cabin Fever lift two tracks from Radio Slave's recent Strictly Rhythm double CD mix for the 14th Trax release on this rather bewitching dark blue clear vinyl. Naturally opting for two tracks from the more jacking Uptown CD, Side A is home to Matt Edwards' edit of the seminal Ravin' Mix of Barbara Tucker's "Stay Together" which adds some extra twist to that distinctive acid tinged rave pulse. On the flip Lil Louis' rework of Black Magic's "Freedom (Make It Funky)" gets stripped back to a raw jackathon replete with a hypnotic crystalline synth melody.

Review: If you've not heard this yet, you've either not being paying attention properly or you don't go out enough. It's been hyped to the heavens for the best part of a year, became an underground Ibiza anthem last summer and has attracted all manner of interest (apparently serial house fancier P Diddy likes it). Now it drops as part of Radio Slave's Cabin Fever series on a particularly desirable pink splattered white 12". What makes "Likewise" so attractive is the unlikely but brilliant combination of a throbbing low end groove (all skippy beats, pulsating sub and relentless electronic chords) with a classic jazz vocal (what sounds like Nina Simone). It shouldn't work, but it does - and then some.

A big room mix from Ibiza's Deep Josh pumped up and energized with a funky bassline, dramatic break and a barrage of effects. Argentina's Ronan is up next adding a commercial but tasteful disco edge. On to Jon Cutler's take, our favourite, smooth and deep with mellow Rhodes and a Hammond B4 organ solo by Brian Jackson of Gil Scott Heron fame. Closing out is Andy's own "Electro Retro Mix" with its tight minimal break beats with ample electro flavour.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***
There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

Review: Having worked hard pushing his own Outcross label, Miguel Campbell is hitting the big time through his affiliation with Hot Creations, and this release should only serve to cement that burgeoning reputation. "Rockin' Beats" makes all the right moves with a clean disco house roll and a hooky vocoder rap turn, while Shadow Child creates a more intricate shuffle and moody synth line for his remix. "Not That Kind Of Girl" nods to Stephanie Mills' 80's gem "A Rush On Me", and sticks a rubbery boogie bassline underneath which should inspire grooving on dancefloors worldwide.
