Review: The latest compilation on CTR, curated by Jason Boardman of Before I Die Records, dives into the rich, underground landscape of early 1980s post-punk. This collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the era's DIY ethos, featuring rare and never-before-heard tracks that encapsulate the innovative spirit of the time. From the 2-Tone-influenced Skeet in Coventry to the dub experiments of Surface Mutants with Cabaret Voltaire, the album uncovers a trove of hidden gems that have largely flown under the radar. One track even boasts a unique post-punk diss track, adding a touch of rebellion to the mix. Boardman has unearthed a variety of tracks, some even sampled by the likes of DJ Shadow, showcasing the lasting influence of these obscure artists. The compilation highlights a time when independent musicians, studios, and labels banded together, bypassing major labels in pursuit of their creative vision. While it's not a comprehensive guide to the era, this album shines a spotlight on the overlooked and underappreciated, giving these artists the recognition they've long deserved, not to mention the enduring power and creativity of the post-punk underground.

Review: Munich-based classical guitarist and composer Jonathan Bockelmann made his mark in 2023 with his debut album Childish Mind. His journey into composition began with arrangements of pieces by Japanese maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto. These arrangements, which have previously been released digitally in three editions, are now available on vinyl for the first time. The record, presented in premium packaging with an embossed art print, showcases Sakamoto's diverse repertoire. It includes both lesser-known works like Suite for Krug and iconic masterpieces such as Bibo No Aozora. This release beautifully celebrates the timeless artistry of Sakamoto as reimagined through Bockelmann's exquisite guitar interpretations.

Review: Since founding DiN in 1999, Ian Boddy has been driven by a passion for collaboration, particularly with artists connected to the pioneering German electronic scene of the 1970s. When a chance meeting with Harald Grosskopf at a Dutch music festival presented the opportunity to work together, Boddy eagerly embraced Grosskopf's ear; the latter's tutelage at the Berlin school spans decades, and he is most notably for his fellowship as a drummer with Klaus Schulze, whose influence looms large over Boddy's own work. But beyond percussion, Grosskopf's Synthesist album revealed his distinct melodic sensibilities, making him an ideal creative partner for Doppelganger. Blending Berlin-schooled sequencing with evocative grooves. Boddy's modular synth textures shine on tracks like 'Boulevard Horizon', while Grosskopf's rhythmic playfulness is evident in 'Livewire'.

Review: Mongolian hip-hop producer Bodikhuu has never been to Rio but this is his lovely letter to the city he has often dreamt of. He has a love of the great Joao Gilberto and armed with that and a worm out MPC he set to work, laying down tropical beats and sunny melodies. The result became an instant classic and spawned a number of tunes that went on to pick up more than a million streams. It's a record that excites the imagination as well as warming the soul and this version comes with superb original artwork designed by illustrator David Burnett on a lovely splatter-coloured vinyl inspired by its own cover.

Review: Body Of Light are brotherly duo Alex and Andrew Jarson from Arizona, but you'd be forgiven for thinking they were from the mid 80s the way they nail the sound of heavy-hearted synth-pop and new wave. This new album was written in the wake of 2019's Time To Kill, and it arrives ten years into their career. The maturity in the music shines through, not least in the voluptuous instrumental parts - just listen to the bass slinking around 'Never Ever' and you'll hear what we mean. If you like your synth-pop shot through with a seductive darkness, this album has more than enough to whet your appetite.

Review: Calling on major chords for their riffs, emotional angst for lyrical delivery and motoring juggernauts for basslines, the driving rhythms of Boilermaker were hard to ignore once you found them back in the 1990s. Emerging from the San Diego guitar scene at a time when Gen X was obsessed with post-hardcore, the trio - Terrin Durfey, Tim Semple, and Richard Sanderson - described their counterpoint as 'Leucadia-core'. If you need a lesson in what that means, Not Enough Time To Get Anything Halfway Done is probably the best place to begin. Three albums, a stack of singles and rarities. In total, 41 tracks spread over a sprawling four LP box set with a 24 page book to read while immersing yourself. And yes, there's a test at the end to check you actually paid attention. (Juno legal disclaimer: there is no test).

The Perfumed Garden Of Gulliver Smith (2:44)
Review: Reissued Sounds reissue Marc Bolan's first posthumous album, originally released in 1981, four years after the T Rex bandleader's death in a tragic car crash. Consisting of outtakes and demos recorded by Bolan in 1966, some of the songs would later be recorded by the remaining members of T. Rex; though most of these appeared in rawer form as part of the album The Beginning Of Doves in 1974. The title number brings the usual Bolanesque mix of raunchy vocal performances and fuzz-packed guitar rolls, while the likes of 'I'm Weird' and 'The Perfumed Garden Of Gulliver Smith' are undeniably more experiental offerings, it's a marker of where Bolan might have headed as an artist had his career noit been cut short so suddenly.

Review: This lovely-looking yellow vinyl album sounds just as good as it looks. It's packed with recordings from Marc Bolan's rehearsal sessions for his band T Rex's 1974 Truck Off Tour, so it offers an intimate glimpse into the creative process before the iconic tour. Specifically captured on January 14, 1974, the sessions are of course raw and imperfect which makes them all the more alive and real while the musicality that defined Bolan's sound still comes through. All royalties from this release are to be donated to the Light Of Love Foundation, benefiting the Marc Bolan School of Music & Film, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations of musicians.

Review: It has been some five-plus years since the last full Bon Iver album but the wait has been well worth it. This one follows the introspective SABLE, a sparse, vulnerable EP born from isolation and inner turmoil. Where that was shadow, this is light-a lush, radiant celebration of love, connection and emotional rebirth. Written at April Base in Wisconsin with collaborators like Jim-E Stack and Danielle Haim, the album leans into clarity and intimacy and gets rid of the signature dense abstraction for more honest and heartfelt pop. The vocals are delivered with openness and purpose as they explore desire, hope and devotion. While still acknowledging lingering shadows, this full-length is a story of growth that isn't about fairytale endings, but about the lessons love teaches.

Review: After 2015, Bon Iver began to fuse ambient glitch with folk, a style which now reaches a head on his latest LP. It expands on 2024's taster EP 'SABLE' in the form of an 11-track sonic parable: waxing introspective on difficult themes such as memory and identity, 'THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS' and 'S P E Y S I D E' indulge typographic play and fragmental lyrics, the latter especially paradigm-shifting in lyrical perspective. 'Awards Season', also, deals in the problematics of recognition, peeking behind and thus part-dissolving the veil of success in public life. With signature passion yet quarrelsomeness, Justin Vernon has crafted yet another glistening, glitching folk odyssey for us to enjoy.

Review: Indie singer-songwriter and folk experimentalist Bon Iver follows up his 2024 EP 'SABLE', expanding upon the EP's concept with a full-length in 11 tracks. Diving into themes of memory, longing and transformation, the record feels like a deciduous psychic regrowth, processed and refined from an initial uncontrolled burl of raw feeling and expression. Layering experimental sounds and organic textures, it hints at Iver's change in direction kept steady ever since 2016's Jagjaguwar debut 22, A Million. The style was continued and redeveloped on 2019's fourth album, i,i, and now returns in its fullest resplendency, with modern symbolic bricolage of effulgent soundscapes and querulous singing. This is the latest in a string of records that cements Justin Vernon stature as an artist and not a mere musician: increasingly, we hear the work of someone clawing back greater and greater shares of aesthetic control.

Francois J Bonnet - "Banshee" (21:13)
Sarah Davachi - "Brasse Brevis" (17:57)
Review: A split release featuring two distinct yet complementary compositions by Francois J. Bonnet and Sarah Davachi. French composer Bonnet's 'Banshee' is a journey to the edges of the old world, where the boundaries between nature and human presence blur. Drawing on field recordings made in the Inner Hebrides, he weaves an aural tableau where the calls of seabirds intertwine with the mournful wail of the wind and the gentle lapping of water against the shore merges with the distant drone of a boat engine. The piece unfolds in seven interwoven movements, each capturing a different facet of the landscape's character. Meanwhile, Canadian artist Davachi's 'Basse Brevis' is a minimalist exploration of timbre, space and duration. Through subtle shifts in texture and harmony, Davachi creates a work that is both precise and evocative, its slowly evolving soundscapes inviting deep listening and contemplation. The piece's restrained yet poignant character creates a gentle tension, blurring the lines between instrumental and concrete approaches to sound. A compelling example of the power of sound to evoke place and emotion, offering two distinct yet complementary perspectives on the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Review: On his latest LP, Will Oldham aka. Bonnie "Prince" Billy dares to work with a producer for the second time: David "Ferg" Ferguson of Johnny Cash and Sturgill Simpson fame, whose attentive hand guides each of these idling songs through to their sinister, diminished conclusions. Led by the ingenious 'London May' - a lolloping Americana concept piece, illustrating the ostensibly lonely, isolated, suicidally ideating (but ultimately not) persona that is BPB - this sombre record ends up a difficult-to-pin one, touching on themes of self-loss, death and devilish deals. Unlike many other records by Oldham, this lilac lilter hears the convalescence of several composers' and vocalists' voices, reflecting a newfound collaborative opening for the artist, perhaps breaking from a common interpretation of his music as solipsistic.

Review: Boogie Down Productions' 1989 release stands as one of hip-hop's most important but often overlooked albums. While many celebrate the group's early work, this record delivers a unique blend of lyrical depth and musical innovation that makes it just as essential. KRS-One, continuing to shape the group's sound after the tragic loss of Scott LaRock, crafted a sonic landscape that's both funky and thought-provoking. The album features powerful tracks like 'You Must Learn' and 'Why Is That?'. where KRS-One tackles issues ranging from education to religion with unflinching clarity. The anti-police anthem 'Who Protects Us From You' remains painfully relevant today, highlighting the album's ability to speak truth to power. 1989 was a transformative year for hip-hop. Amidst a genre explosion, the album's lessons were a revelation, challenging listeners to think critically and embrace their own potential. The infectious beats and KRS-One's wisdom left a lasting impression, creating an album that wasn't just entertaining, but educational. For younger fans, this reissue offers a chance to discover a foundational moment in hip-hop's history, underscoring the genre's ability to both entertain and enlighten.

Now they're back on Dark Entries with third full length THE FALL: A Series of Documented Experiences after many great outings on the likes of Comeme, Pinkman and Cititrax. This latest work explores memory and embodiment through nine moody tracks that blend melancholic synths, deep basslines and powerful drums into introspective soundscapes that muse on love and loss. We're told that 'Save Me' and 'The Fall' are born from heartbreak but distil pain into something beautiful while tributes to artists like Porn Darsteller and Genesis P-Orridge also appear in this fantastically personal album.

Review: The very particular nature of polar landscapes - undeniably beautiful, but also remote, inaccessible and challenging - have long proved inspirational to ambient composers, not least Norwegian great Biosphere (whose very particular trademark sound is reflective of his roots on the edges of the arctic circle). Italian artist Lia Bosch has gone one further on her debut album, creating an album inspired by the Antarctic and a self-created narrative featuring an "abandoned alien base" at the South Pole. Musically, it is icy, chilling, atmospheric and immersive as you'd expect, with alien electronics and glacial aural textures rubbing shoulders with snowstorms of white noise, blowy polar winds, and unearthly musical motifs.

Review: Den Helder is the northernmost city in Holland, is surrounded by water and borders the North Sea. With a military history dating back to the 16th century, it is also the most bombed city in the Netherlands and was nearly destroyed during World War II. The Third of May was written and recorded in 2020 over six days in an old pumping station located in the dunes of Huisduinen near Den Helder. The story behind the album is set in this historic city, weaving its tumultuous past into a vivid, imagined narrative inspired by the area's rich and tragic history. It's as much of an emotional rollercoaster as you would expect given the concept.

Review: Recorded at the BBC Paris cinema in Regent Street in 1970, which was the beginning of Bowie's defining decade. The performance tapes were lost by the BBC so if it wasn't for someone with the legendary foresight to make a cassette tape recording we wouldn't have this collection. Whilst Bowie is known for big, complex arrangements, the set here offers something stripped back and much more 60s sounding. You could imagine Bowie humming 'Amsterdam' around a campfire in Glastonbury, 'The Prettiest Star' shows the immense sustain of Bowie's voice and 'London By Ta-Ta' shows a more playful psychedelic side. Having taken this showcase opportunity with John Peel in his stride so well, it's his energy to play every show as if it was his last that is admirable and a key reason he managed to climb the ladder from here.

Review: While not one of David Bowie's best-known achievements, masterminding the world's biggest-ever 'non-TV' satellite broadcast is undoubtedly an impressive one. It took place at London's Riverside Studios in 2003, with the Thin White Duke - accompanied by his regular backing band - performing then new album Reality in its entirety, live to 86 cinemas in 26 countries. This Record Store Day release presents the concert in its entirety (the encore was not broadcast at the time), delivering a superb document of a unique event. Of course, Bowie was in fine form, with the immersive sound mix by regular collaborator Tony Visconti capturing the legendary artist at the peak of his powers.

Review: This special reissue of David Bowie's Young Americans album drops on the exact day of its Golden Jubilee. It was the late, great creative maverick's nine studio album and as always found him broadening his musical horizons. He embraced what he described "plastic soul" and it worked as this album gave him his first ever number one in the US with 'Fame' which was co-written with John Lennon and Carlos Alomar, who at the time played guitar with Bowie. It has been remastered for this reissue and cut at half speed so you can really luxuriate in the details.

Review: Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this pivotal moment in Bowie's career emerged from his fascination with Philadelphia International Records and the disco-infused sounds dominating dance clubs. Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios mid-tour, Bowie's pivot to "plastic soul" was both a bold departure and a reflection of his adaptability as he morphed out of the Ziggy Stardust persona. The album features collaborations with important figures like guitarist Carlos Alomar, whose funk riff would anchor 'Fame', and a then-unknown Luther Vandross, who contributed backup vocals and songwriting. 'Fame' and the title tracks became standouts, blending funk, soul and Bowie's unique flair. The reimagined 'Fascination' and dreamy 'Win' showed the album's versatility, while covers like Lennon's 'Across the Universe' help balance out the album while highlighting Bowie's willingness to experiment. Though the album is daring as Diamond Dogs or Station to Station, it holds its own with a mix of hits and enjoyable fillers, solidifying Bowie as a trailblaser in blending genres. This half-speed mastered reissue revitalises the sound, bringing clarity and depth to an album that remains a iconic album in Bowie's catalogue.

Review: David Bowie's live shows were as unique as his recordings. This one from his time in Japan captures him at work on May 16, 1990 as the legendary performer was at the height of his Sound+Vision Tour, a celebration of his greatest hits and a farewell to older material. The Tokyo Dome show showcased Bowie's magnetic stage presence as he worked through his repertoire and blended theatrics with masterful musicianship. Featuring timeless tracks like 'Space Oddity' and 'Heroes,' the performance highlighted Bowie's unparalleled artistry all backed by a dynamic band and cutting-edge production which makes for a great listen all these years on.

Review: Boy Harsher's second album delves into the shadowy realms of minimal wave, weaving stark synths and propulsive rhythms into a haunting tapestry. Tracks like 'Face the Fire' and 'Fate' showcase the duo's ability to craft dancefloor-ready beats infused with a brooding intensity. The lo-fi production evokes a sense of icy detachment, yet there's an underlying warmth in Jae Matthews' vocals that adds depth to the coldwave aesthetic. While some ambient interludes may feel less impactful, the album's cohesive atmosphere and emotive undercurrents make it a compelling listen for those drawn to the darker side of electronic music.

Review: Moses Boyd is one of the driving faces behind the thrilling revelations in contemporary jazz in London in recent years. Back in 2015, he dropped Displaced Diaspora, a collection of music that was written during the same sessions that produced his hit Rye Lane Shuffle. The album features fellow pivotal nu-jazz peers in the British scene including Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia and Nathaniel Cross. It also showcases British soul vocalist Terri Walker at her best, saxophonist and Bata player Kevin Haynes with his Grupo Eleggua, and razor-sharp rapper Louis VI. Though jazz is the foundational sound, Yoruba chants, hip-hop and electronica are all mingled to make for a sonic stew that reflects the fresh and evolving sound of contemporary British music.

He branches out here though with a new one, Ones & Zeros, which he has said is a "concept label reflecting new modes of creative and subcultural circulation". it launches with a bumper compilation featuring 22 blistering sounds across six sides of wax. Two of them come from the bas himself, one is a collar with Locked Club, and elsewhere new school and more established names like Skee Mask, Safety Trance and Manni Dee all offer up the sort of high impact tracks that will always be useful to have at your disposal for when the rave really is ready to peak.

Rooted in the serene landscapes of rural Germany where his creativity first blossomed, the album also reflects the dynamic energy of Berlin, which reshaped his sound in the early 2000s. Boysen's fourth studio album bridges past and future, merging the reflective melodies of his youth with the innovative tones of Berlin's electronic scene. He describes it as music his 15-year-old self would admire but only his grown-up self could create. Unbound by tradition, Boysen's eclectic influences drive his constant musical reinvention.

Review: Boytronic emerged in the early 80s in Hamburg. The group was founded by Holger Wobker (aka Bryllyant Berger) and Peter Sawatzki and they were initially producing soundtracks for seedy Hamburg sex shows as Kapitan Sehnsucht but soon shifted focus to pop music as Boytronic. Their debut single, 'You,' was influenced by New Order and Patrick Cowley and gained traction after a German TV performance so sold 80,000 copies in its first week and reached #10 on the charts. This success led to their debut album The Working Model. It was recorded in just 14 days in 1983 and is now a techno-pop classic that makes a welcome return here.

Review: Boz Scaggs' 1969 album, blending Southern rock, blues and r&b, wasn't a commercial success but it set the stage for his future successes. Recorded at Muscle Shoals with co-producer Jann Wenner, the album captures the raw energy and magic of a remarkable collaboration. Scaggs' smooth, mellow vocals blend seamlessly with the legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section, led by Duane Allman's iconic guitar work. The album spans multiple genresifrom country-tinged 'Waiting for a Train' to the sultry blues of 'Loan Me a Dime'. The latter, in particular, became a standout, with its extended, fiery guitar solos and a signature groove that captured the imagination of FM rock stations. The album's charm lies in its organic, unpretentious feel, as Scaggs and the musicians create something truly magical over six days of spontaneous recording. It's a celebration of Southern soul with a West Coast twist and it remains a fascinating glimpse into an artist finding his voice in the heart of Muscle Shoals.

Review: Solo Arabian nocturnes for oud return to haunt us on Tunisian-born musician Anouar Brahem's latest full-length project, backed by stellarly moving counterpoints for cello, piano and bass. Beginning with Arab traditional music as a start-point, Brahem has, over the course of his career, slowly verged into the domains of contemporary classical and jazz. Fusing tradition and modernity, his compositions have a chiffon feel, creaseless and impeccably recorded, yet they also stomach a certain chronicity and locale, indulging harmonic modes and inherited composition techniques.

Rooted in prog-rock grooves and boogie flair, the album explores romantic and reflective territory without losing the collective's playful spirit. On the album, which arrives as a special for this year's Record Store Day, James Di Salvio is joined by longtime collaborators and fresh talent alike to create a lush collaborative soundscape that's rich in emotion and rhythm. The tracks all exude soulful vocals, brass-laced arrangements and global sonic textures, which help to make The Garden is a mature yet adventurous chapter in BV3's musical journey.

Review: You know we're all in trouble if Daniel Brandt starts making albums about the Doomsday Clock - now closer than ever to midnight, and Armageddon - and whether or not the Earth will survive us. More than just a record, not only does this reflect the darkest of the Brandt Brauer Frick legend's oeuvre, thematically and in moments aurally, it also represents the latest in his long list of defining work and groundbreaking projects from the artist. The LP is one aspect, an apocalyptic live rave show another, where fans and masochists alike can indulge in a multimedia presentation of end times. Sticking to the sounds, though, Brandt again shows himself to be a true electronic maestro here, from the earthy wooded percussive loops of 'Resistance', to the droning string funnels on 'Addicted', 'Steady''s rolling post-club depth, and the opening alarm call future tech-step of 'Paradise OD'. So, if it does all come down to this, at least we're bowing out on a sonic high.

Review: An experimental dark folk group from Wurzburg, Germany, Brannten Schnure's 2017 release gets a well-deserved reissue, retaining its distinctive experimental dark folk essence. The duo, Christian Schoppik and Katie Rich, crafts immersive soundscapes where traditional instruments, eerie vocals, and looped, crackling recordings converge. Tracks like 'Das Jungfrauliche Ohr' and 'Die Milchlinse' set the tone, blending atonal elements with haunting, dreamlike atmospheres. 'Die Geschandete Venus' takes a darker, more melancholic turn, with its slow, creeping build. On the B-side, tracks such as 'Der Kleinere Mit Gefleckten Linien Umgebene Papillonsflugel' offer intricate compositions that evoke a surreal, almost cinematic quality. With influences from Nico and Novy Svet, their music pours out and creates a world that's both unsettling and strangely beautiful.

Charlie Baker continues to evolve here with his mix of footwork, techno and dancehall influences and jazz drumming background all coming together into fresh club rhythms. The album's unique vibe emerged from a burst of jet-lagged inspiration in late 2023 and led to tracks like 'Squashy Track' and 'YOLO Bass Rewind' which both off-set a mix of organic and synthetic elements, Afro-Cuban rhythms, 'amapiano' and psychedelic influences. Breaka's sound remains unlike anything else.

Review: Neville 'Breeze' McKeith is undoubtedly a legend of Black British music - albeit one not known to the majority of listeners. His CV is impressive; as well as being a founder member of jazz-funk outfit Light of the World, McKeith was also an integral member of Beggar & Co (known for disco hit '(Somebody) Help Me Out') and currently wields his guitar for The Brit-Funk Association. Unusually, this is only his second solo album, and arrives 41 years after his first. It acts as a showcase for his virtuoso guitar playing (he switches between lead, rhythm and acoustic guitar across the set), offering a mix of jazz-funk, fusion, contemporary jazz and soul songs and instrumentals. It's mostly new original material, but wisely McKeith has also included a handful of rather good interpretations of classic cuts.

The interplay between soulful grooves and intricate rhythms gives the music a timeless quality, particularly in standout tracks where vocal lines and instrumental passages collide in unexpectedly powerful ways. Review: Funkadelic superstar George Clinton knew many a side project as a producer; one was the ingenious, part-cyborg duo, The Brides Of Funkenstein. It was Clinton's idea that two other backing singers, Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva, become the Brides Of Funkenstein, a character he invented for the 1976 Parliament LP, The Clones Of Dr Funkenstein. So popular were the brides that Clinton wasted no time in signing them to Atlantic Records; their debut album here followed the rip-roaring fan feedback that ensued from their debut single 'Disco To Go' / 'When You're Gone' in the US. The decision to break the male-fronted P-funk mould was intentional: simply *that many* Clinton instrumentals could not be credited to the man alone. "He's got thousands of tracks. He's got a whole cupboard full of them. He's got enough tracks to keep him in albums for two years," once chimed Mabry. Enchanting each jam with mecha-augmented femme flair, we're urged to be taken to the limit, across a blistering seven, smackout tracks. Mark 'Warship Touchante', the star tune by far: a wonky hi-NRG nutter, splattered with surreal, performative electronic vocal effects.

Review: Parliament-Funkadelic offshoot project Brides Of Funkenstein was masterminded by George Clinton but fronted by Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva, whom originally served as the two core backing singers for Sly & The Family Stone. Funk Or Walk was their cyber-augmented opening statement as a duo, combining archly histrionic vocals with truncated funk struttage, and crossing into wonky hi-NRG at points. The record’s wonky and experimental bent epitomises the P-funk sound whose name Clinton helped coin, and which is finessed in the myriad usages of ARP String and Hohner Clavinet, best heard on the light-handed claps of ‘Birdie’ or the polyvalent brass-off ‘Amorous’. The weird brides of Parliament did go on to record two further great records, but this is by far their chef-d'oeuvre.

Review: This welcome reissue is a wonderful blend of poetic storytelling and intricate guitar work infused with haunting and deeply personal melodies. Anne Briggs is known primarily as a ballad singer but explores the human condition here through a mix of original compositions and carefully chosen covers. Originally released in 1971, The Time Has Come marked a shift from her unaccompanied vocal style and introduced guitar and bouzouki. Rather than overshadowing her voice, the instrumentation enhances its crystalline beauty as her delicate yet commanding fingerpicking means Biggs crafts an intimate and emotionally rich sound that makes this one an underrated folk delight.

Review: Recorded in 2014 but only now seeing the light of day, this long-shelved session unites an exceptional ensemble, including the legendary American jazz alto saxophonist and composer Lee Konitz, the ever-explorative guitarist Bill Frisell, pianist Jason Moran, bassist Thomas Morgan and the rhythmic backbone of drummer Andrew Cyrille. Together, they create a meditative yet dynamic set, balancing composed frameworks with fluid improvisation. The album unfolds with 'Black is All Colors at Once' , where Moran's delicate piano textures meet Bro's shimmering guitar, setting the stage for Konitz's gracefully introspective saxophone lines. Konitz, still remarkably inventive at 86, takes a rare turn on soprano sax for Haiti, a lilting, playful piece that gently sways with a hypnotic ease. 'Milford Sound' honors the avant-garde drumming pioneer Milford Graves with a free-flowing elegance, while 'Pearl River' ventures into abstraction, as Bro and Frisell intertwine their guitars into a rich harmonic fabric. One of the album's finest moments comes with 'Mar Del Plata', a wistful, sax-free waltz that echoes Frisell's most poignant work. Throughout the set, restraint and atmosphere take precedence, with every note serving the ensemble's delicate interplay rather than sheer technical display. Taking Turns is a luminous addition to Bro's catalog, revealing new depths with each listen. Thoughtful, spacious and beautifully realised, it stands as a quietly stunning moment in modern jazz.

Review: Newly ordained keyboardist Volodja Brodsky, from Estonia, has described his music as an exploration of the transformative power of minimalism, the art form and compositional approach in which he is trained. Brodsky's second LP lacks the contextual elucidations that accompanied the first record that 2024, but we sense that this may be because the career ball is already rolling, and no further explanations may be needed for now. Raindrops is a precipitous record, as Brodsky wrenches piano and vibraphone motifs from romantic scale meanderings we didn't know possible; widescreen voicings and compound intervals help earmark these standout moments. Elsewhere, the mood is downcast, as on 'Fogbound Streets Of Maardu' or 'Raindrops'; the left hand basso is almost always moody in feel, while the right hand always produces tearful and romantic sound.

Review: Recorded at Channel One in February 1982, Rastafari Liveth! is Peter Broggs' definitive recording and it is no surprise, then, that is backed by the legendary Roots Radics band featuring drums from Style Scott and bass from Flabba Holt with percussionists Bongo Herman & Eberton also involved. It was mixed by Scientist and Solgie and was the first release for Doctor Dread's label RAS (Real Authentic Sounds). Featuring tracks like 'Jah Jah Voice Is Calling,' 'Rastafari Liveth,' 'International Farmer,' and 'Just Because I'm a Rastaman' this cult classic demands to be cranked up loud.

Review: Broken English Club is the alias of techno veteran Oliver Ho and here he explores his signature industrial wave and post-punk sound with unflinching intensity as he lands on Dekmantel's UFO Series with Songs Of Love And Decay. It is a raw, brooding album dedicated to the late Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant with tracks like 'Crawling' and 'Death Cult' echoing his tribal techno roots. 'England Heretic' meanwhile channels eerie synthwave and Giallo vibes and 'Vessel Of Skin' delves into distortion-laced post-punk that contrasts with the stark futurism of 'Pacific Island Kill.' Ho blends cinematic textures with club energy throughout so makes for a dark, emotionally charged tribute that pushes beyond typical boundaries and is sure to resonate in the club.

Review: Brooklyn Sounds' legendary 1972 album epitomises raw Nuyorican salsa dura with powerful trombones, unconventional piano and electrifying percussion all colliding in a scintillating fashion. This reissue of the band's sophomore release includes rare photos and liner notes and displays a confident, mature sound honed through live gigs, Blending barrio grit with Caribbean rhythm, tracks like the anthemic 'Libre Soy' and 'Ha Llegado el Momento' feature a nod to 'Moliendo Cafe' and have become dancefloor classics. Though their career was short-lived, Brooklyn Sounds' music gained global acclaim and saw them cementing their place in salsa history as pioneers of the independent 1970s New York scene.

Review: Brown Spirits' current album on Soul Jazz Records delivers a raw, heavy and hypnotic blend of psychedelic rock and krautrock. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, the trio channels influences from Neu!, Miles Davis, Soft Machine, Gang of Four and Hendrix, creating a unique sound that combines progressive intensity with punk and post-punk energy. Their stripped-down lineup of bass, drums, guitar and keyboards is reminiscent of classic acts like Cream and Hendrix, but with a DIY, lo-fi edge. The album features powerful, fuzzed-out guitars, tough basslines and pounding drums, complemented by analog Moog synthesisers and a gritty, analog recording process. Brown Spirits' sound is simultaneously experimental and driving, drawing on their love of Krautrock while infusing it with a raw, punk attitude. Following the quick sellout of two limited-edition singles, this album is a testament to their ability to merge hard, progressive rock with hypnotic grooves and a distinct, unmistakable energy. It's an unforgettable sonic journey that stands out in the current psychedelic rock landscape.

Review: New York emcee Hassaan Mackey (Rawkus 50) delivers sharp, unfiltered lyricism, packing rhymes with onomatopoeia and raw street wisdom. Set to blackout beats by Detroit producer Apollo Brown (The Reset, Brown Study, Gas Mask, Clouds), we've the ideal backdrop here: deep bass set to the the crackle of well-worn vinyl. The result is a record on which we're given much more than our Daily Bread. Lyrical picturebooks of faded spirit photographs return like plasmic ghosts, each booing line steeped in a mood of eerie reckoning. Atonement lingers in every note, experience weighs heavy, yet a fierce hope burns through.
