Review: This is the seventh album by chamber pop titans Beirut. The group, who are led by Zach Condon, have created their largest album to-date and it's among their most profoundly beautiful. The music originated in 2023 when a contemporary circus director, based in Sweden, who was creating a show based on an adaptation of a novel by German author Judith Schalansky about loss and impermanence asked Condon to write music. And who better than Beirut to score that theme. Condon's vocals are starkly beautiful with the tenderness of early choir music. The track 'Caspian Tiger' is among the most cinematic of the tracks on here with resplendent Renaissance influences and direct lyrics that are tear jerking and feel genuinely moved by the extinction of the great mammal, but could so easily be about a close friend lost.

Review: First released in November 2024, Belief Disconnect's Desire & Discontent follows up on the preceding Decadent Yet Depraved, and cements their status as commentators of our times. If last time took a sledgehammer to the monstrous face of a world presenting as one thing but actually something more brutal and savage, this marks our arrival in different time. Masks, like gloves, are off, sides drawn, and the knife edge society and civilisation now rest upon is cast in sharp relief. This is dark, and we mean very, very dark, stuff. It's industrial. Like, super factory-sized industry. Tracks are full of rage. There's the sense that human aspects, a vocal for example, are emanating from solitary confinement somewhere in the depths of a Borg ship. And yet hearing and listening are acts of catharsis - Desire & Discontent is as much about giving us an outlet as it is reflecting a dystopian sci fi narrative which may be on the verge of coming true. Belief Defect certainly seem to think there's a chance, anyway.

Review: Belief Defect's Moe Espinosa and Luis Flores bonded over a love of early industrial music - and even now, some six years on from the pair's debut album, its influence is still very much in evidence. But that doesn't mean that this, their eight track sophomore effort, harks back to the days of Throbbing Gristle et al. Rather, the Berlin duo take their taste for the uncompromising and sonically shocking and twist it into new shapes, equally informed by experiments from the leftfield of electronica and sharpened up by acute sound design. 'Apprehension Engine' is technically ambient - it's certainly beatless - but the way it steadily frazzles and burns itself up is edgy and unsettling rather than being chill out material. 'The Witching' splices doom-laden, deep voices with lumphammer kick drums, while 'Celebrate Me!' is a gloriously half-Suicide, half-Autechre mix of cyborg aggression and throbbing sequencers. Not one to be listened to with the lights off we reckon... It'll be all fright on the night!

Review: Reissued by The Flenser, known for their penchant for avantgarde "weirdo" metal acts such as Chat Pile, Mamaleek and Have A Nice Life, this 2011 demo from "funeral doom" post-metal duo Bell Witch would serve as the clarion call for their burgeoning future as standouts in the US doom scene. Clocking in at a beastly 37 minutes spread out over just four tracks, with two ('Beneath The Mask', 'I Wait') re-appearing as cuts on their 2012 debut full-length Longing, the pair's mercurial, slow-paced, depressively trudging drone metal approach was already on such potent display from the outset that it almost seems disingenuous or indicative of their humble nature to refer to this project as merely a demo. Presented with an updated layout, the release still bears the original artwork designed by founding drummer Adrian Guerra who tragically passed away in 2015 following the release of their sophomore effort Four Phantoms.

Review: While he's released countless albums as one half of Erasure, Andy Bell solo excursions are something of a rarity - at least under his given name. Setting aside his conceptual 'Torsten' albums, Ten Crowns is his first solo album since 2010. Produced by Dave Auden (who also provides a seamless, DJ mix style version of the set on disc two), it largely delivers a more muscular, EDM-influenced take on the sparkling and energy-packed synth-pop sound he's famed for making with Erasure. There are naturally deviations from the script - see the indie-rock-framed singalong alongside Debbie Harry, 'Heart's A Liar' - but for the most part the highlights are rooted in Bell's love of dance-pop/synth-pop fusion (see 'Don't Cha Know' and 'Breaking Through The Interstellar').

Review: Electropop pioneer Andy Bell, who is best known as the lead vocalist in late 80s and early 90s group Erasure, releases his new solo album. The release is his first solo album since 2010s Non-Stop, Ten Crowns. Not one to settle for less than the best, the producer of this album, Dave Aude, has more number ones on the Billboard Dance Club chart than anyone else. Aude's also big in the pop world having worked with the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna and U2. This solo album's standout is a collaboration with Blondie's Debby Harry, titled 'Heart's A Liar'. Plus, 'Breaking Thru The Interstellar', which flicks back and forth between cosmic, introspective layered sonics and barnstorming electro pop that puts a kick in your step. Review: Following a few years spent focusing on his ambient, drone and instrumental shoegaze focused GLOK project, former Ride man Andy Bell has finally got round to recording a new album of songs. Titled Sonic Cathedral, the album is undeniably nostalgic in tone, not only reacalling the jangly and sonically dense days of shoegaze and jangly indie-pop, but also the funkier and more intoxicated indie-dance records of that period (think Weatherall productions and remixes of the period, the Stone Roses and - whisper it quietly - Candy Flip). It's a bold and hugely enjoyable blend, with Bell sashaying between the tactile, Spiritualized-ish 'The Notes You Never Hear', the krautrock-goes-funky flex of 'Space Station Mantra', the Beck-esque 'Music Concrete' and the Tony Allen/Afrobeat-influenced 'Apple Green UFO'.

Review: Andy Bell is a blessed man: he had none other than Neu!'s Michael Rother supply guitar parts to the opening cut 'I'm In Love' (a cover of The Passions' post-punk classic). Moreover, One Love's Dot Allison is guest vocalist and supplies ethereal tones to the breathtaking song. It opens the gate beautifully for the heady collection of entirely new material that follows. It's an album that navigates Stone Roses grooves and Arthur Russell style experimental textures and works just as well for close listening as it does moodily-lit dancefloors. The Ride guitarist is on the form of his life here and you could do far worse than letting this wash all over you.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

Review: After five years apart, Italian composer Eraldo Bernochi and Japanese violinist, electronica producer and current Tangerine Dream member Hoshiko Yamana return with a sequel to their much-loved 2020 album Mujo. Review: Germany's Bersarin Quartett - the imaginary invention of Munster musician Thomas Bucker - drops its fifth album Systeme. Whether the sole product of one man's imagination or the figurative invocation of orchestra-as-tulpa, it doesn't matter. This is an album of full-on metamodern electro-orchestral post-generations, the likes of which generations prior would've never heard before. Described by Denovali as "if Talk Talk, Tim Hecker and Skrillex were making music together and challenging our tolerance for ambiguity", we find this comparison apt if not eliding the real thrust of the record; the likes of 'Liebe' and 'Autopoesie' evidently draw on far more influences than mere composers, building a strikingly oneiric repertoire of crystalline fluctuations and timestretched neoclassical romances.

Review: This is one of a couple of The Big Three Trio albums that are being reissued right now. The threesome in question was a pioneering blues group led by Willie Dixon whose influence shaped Chicago blues in the early years. I Feel Like Steppin' Out captures the trio's smooth harmonies and neat rhythms as well as being united by Dixon's signature bass playing. Blending jump blues, boogie-woogie and early r&b, this one has a lively, feel-good energy and tracks like the title cut are a fine example of the trio's polished yet raw sound which laid the foundation for modern blues and rock. Their sophisticated style and rich vocal harmonies paired with top songwriting would stand them apart today as much as they did back in the 50s.

Review: Miami-born contemporary guitarist Bill Orcutt is known for his infatuating blend of blues, punk, trance and noise. With the release of Four Guitars Live on CD, he could've easily convinced us of this being a rare and long-forgotten artefact, of a proto-drone artist from the Deltaic 1960s. In reality, this was first incarnated in 2022 under the recorded name Music For Four Guitars, and Orcutt's establishing brand of doom-blues-trance-minimalism could invite artistic comparisons as far-fetched as Steve Reich or Rachika Nayar. But his sound is more nostalgic, seeming to predict emo and pysch both "before" and after the fact of the genre's establishment. Fittingly Reichean, Orcutt forms one part of a quartet here, performing the record in its entirety live at Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht, 2023.

Review: Violin extraordinaire and singer Andrew Bird teams up with an Americana icon, whose star has risen and is continuing to rise - Madison Cunningham. Bird says of Cunningham that she is one of the most talented musicians he's ever encountered. Together they've covered the 1973 album Buckingham Nicks - Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's pre-Fleetwood Mac LP and done a brilliant job of it. Buckingham Nicks was a flop commercially when it was released and despite the duo's subsequent success it was never remastered or re-released digitally, so hard to come by. Thankfully, Cunningham and Bird bring this underrated gem into the limelight and do so in style. "The best reason to cover anyone is that little part of you that thinks you might do it better. This album epitomizes excess and confidence and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves," says Bird in a press release. Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: The Birthday Massacre, hailing from Canada, command a bracing gothic blend of 80s electronica and aggressive guitar work. Formed in 2000 as Imagica, the band is led by vocalist Chibi and guitarists Rainbow and Michael Falcore. They debuted in London, Ontario, before moving to Toronto and rebranding, with the 2002 self-released Nothing and Nowhere inducting us into their horror-comedic sonic aesthetic, drawing on macabre cabaret and Grande-Guignol rock. Review: James Ford is one of the most important unsung heroes of contemporary pop and rock. As a studio producer, he's helped craft and hone incredible work from Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur and more. As an artist in his own right, he's perhaps more incredible. So, his impact on the latest and long-awaited new addition to Black Country New Road's catalogue should not be underestimated. Nor should the result of splitting the songwriting and vocal duties between members Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery and May Kershaw. "It's definitely very different" said one of the trio about how this compares to preceding long form outings. We'd say it's definitely very different to most music you'll hear this week. It's folk, soft rock, experimental garage something, and none of the above, with tracks that almost seem at odds with themselves, chopping and changing, evolving and progressing, until you hear them as a whole.

Review: Every once in a while, you get a band emerge from the vibrant London music scene that you notice aren't like all the other bands. You sense they have something a bit special. BC, NR are like that - they offer something so rich musically that it appears immune to any potential threat that could come from changing trends. This third studio album of theirs comes under what looked like difficult circumstances from the outside. Their lead singer and songwriter Isaac Wood left the band shortly before the release of their second album. But they've withstood the pressure incredibly and are on top form here. There's more emphasis than ever on sharing the role of frontperson so the album is like a smorgasbord where you sample different voices and songwriting styles that exist within the group. Lead single 'Besties' is violinist Georgia Ellery's. It thrives off of its dynamism with explosive Phil Spector-esque wall of sound moments set in alongside elegant indie folk. A truly massive chapter awaits.

Review: BC, NR are now onto their third album. The Ninja Tune-signees gained attention for not posing as if they're in a band, but looking like an ordinary group of students, or twentysomethings house-sharing. Their bold look, where they're smiling in the press pics, as opposed to donning a moody pout, has thankfully been backed up with some terrific music. Their debut, For The First Time, earned them favourable comparisons to post-rock trailblazers Slint and their second album Ants From Up There is the Gen-z equivalent of Arcade Fire's Funeral, thanks to its grandiose anthemics. Famously, singer and lyricist Isaac Wood left the band on the even of the release of their second album, which sparked outcry and paranoia from their ever-growing army of fans about what that might mean for their future. But the band have kept at it and the remaining six members have chosen to share frontperson duties, thus relieving the added pressure that comes with being a designated frontperson. This third album - and first post Isaac Wood - is proving to be a striking new chapter, with the lead single, 'Besties', an immediately likeable way of introducing it to the world. Georgia Ellery, also of Jockstrap, takes lead vocals here and offers an unforgettable off-kilter indie pop cut reminiscent of Aldous Harding. Zutons-y sax stabs scattered in make for a beautiful touch and leave us feeling that this is the album that's going to send BC, NR onto a stratospheric level, where they're spoken about in the same breath as Radiohead as one of Britain's finest bands.

Review: Experimental electronic triad The Black Dog see their 2009 CD album remastered and reissued, a missive from a time when the band were particularly concerned with the encroachment of surveillance capital and Orwellian practices carried out by institutions, governments and corporations. Tackling the cynical ironies of weaponised phraseologies such as "for your own safety", and their use by firms whom almost certainly do not have our best interests at heart, the mood of this techno tucker is indeed certainly, if not paranoid, vexed. Emblematic of this are humanity reductions such as 'You're Only SQL', on which gurgly basses churn, and 'CCTV Nation', which bridges Dispatches-style documentary melodies and jittery acid house.

Review: Way back in 2006, when for various reasons they were suffering with insomnia, the Black Dog began making music when sleep deprived - a process the Sheffield trio say made their material more emotive and vulnerable. At various times since, they've returned to the idea, resulting in this album - a collection of immersive musical movements that frequently blur the boundaries between the enveloping ambience the IDM pioneers have become famous for in recent years, and (synth) string-laden neo-classical compositions. Of course, it's not all picturesque sonic beauty, with the paranoia and slow-thinking darkness sometimes associated with periods of sleep deprivation being translated into trippy, melancholic or sonically intense soundscapes rooted in drone and dark ambient. Throughout, it remains surprisingly emotive and - for the most part - pleasingly meditative.

Review: Prolific Italian maestro Black Loops returns to Freerange with Always Moving, a debut album steeped in high-grade dance heritage. Drawing on over a decade of production, he moves beyond club tools to something more personal and musical, with guest appearances from Harvey Sutherland, Byron the Aquarius and Marlena Dae. Rooted in funk, soul and 90s grooves, these are rich, warm tracks with fully authentic swing i with much of the percussion played live by the artist himself. The result is fluid and human, from the broken beats of 'CDMX' to the shimmering chords of 'Detroit Love Letter'. Marlena Dae adds her touch to several standouts, including the disco-leaning 'Electrical' and hazy deep house of 'Pleasure Ride'. Even at its most downtempo, like the closing 'Good Bye Berlin', the album stays focused and melodic. A confident and expressive full-length that shows how far Black Loops has come while hinting at where he might head next.

Far beyond club tools, this is a sensitive elusion of watery neo soul instrumentation and distant broken beat jazz, and we're not surprised in this breath to learn of Black Loops' own background as a drummer. Nor is it any wonder either that such auteur's disco house regals such as Harvey Sutherland, Byron The Aquarius and Berlin vocalist Marlena Dae all appear on the record, through 'CDMX' to the ever so eerie, Erie-downstream deep house of 'Detroit Love Letter'. 'Electrical And LSD' takes after such influences as Metro Area's disco house shimmer, while tracks like 'Pleasure Ride' and 'Good Bye Berlin' further locks down the abiding nighttime tension - that least comparable part of his sound.

Review: The year 1970 truly served as the dawn of Black Sabbath with not only the release of their iconic self-titled debut LP but also their even more legendary sophomore follow-up Paranoid also arriving the other end of the calendar. Embarking on a mammoth 121 date tour across Europe and the United States, kicking off in Swansea, Wales in September all the way through to April 1971, the middle point just before Christmas saw the metal pioneers land at L'Olympia, Paris on 20th December 1970 for a grandiose performance made up of some their greatest works and legitimately the most vital metal tracks of all time. From the opening riffage of the quintessential title-track to the resurgent 'Iron Man', the proto-doom stylings of 'N.I.B' and 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep' to the ultimate anti-war anthem 'War Pigs', this setlist reads almost exactly like the first disc of one the band's many greatest hits collections, as it just so happens that this early in their tenure, they'd already penned such a bevvy of classics. Pulled directly from the soundboard, this is Ozzy and co in their absolute prime before ego and mass quantities of narcotics would join as a permanent fifth member.

Review: Classic rock up there with the likes of Audioslave, Foo Fighters and Guns N Roses, Kentucky natives Black Stone Cherry write anthems that make you want to put your foot down on a vintage hotrod and blaze a trail through the desert. The guitar playing is supreme with flashy solos and a Led Zeppelin-esque ability to hone a riff. Singer Chris Robertson has a bit of Chris Cornell about him with a rich timbre and strength to be able to sing in front of a wall of stack amps without sounding drowned out. This is a reissue of their second album that originally came out in 2008 on the label that gave us Slipknot - Roadrunner. It's a critically acclaimed entry point to their oeuvre and went to number one in the UK Rock Album Chart when it was first released.
