Review: Nearly 30 years strong, Ugly Duckling is a Long Beach based hip-hop group that has always stayed true to the earliest movements in the genre. Quietly topping up their discog every year or so, their latest is a tongue-in-cheek critique of the scene for not recognizing James Brown's influence on rap. A medley of pillaging artists from Salt N' Pepa to Black Eyed Peas to Dr. Dre appear on this hilarious cycle-through, with some precision breakwork to boot - all original JB samples, of course. They had a hit, and here's the means; they used that James Brown!

Review: This utter classic from Andy Cooper is a well-known hit in latter-day funk and hip-hop circles. 'It Was James Brown' is very often reissued for all the DJs out there, and for a good reason. The track serves as an out-and-out tribute to the international hip-hop and dance music communities' regular sampling of the funk legend James Brown. "They used that James Brown", Cooper rightly confirms at the end of nearly every bar, as an endless barrage of breakbeats sampled from the singer's work appears on a singular medley track. Don't miss this latest iteration from Spasibo, which hears an instrumental version too.

Review: Darvid Thor, Henry Jenkins and Hudson Whitlock (of the bands Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef) founded the low-key Frollen Music Library in 2021. Now aided in kind with a public release of their works by Spasibo Records, a heartwarming dialogue is facilitated between two isntitutions by way of a new four-track EP. Hand-picking four sweet treats from two earlier releases put out between 2021 and 2022 respectively - 'By The Phone (You Rang?)', 'Jaw Breaker' and 'Sei Cardigani Di Ball' all hailing from the former's Sweet Treats Vol. 1 compilation and the final track '1/4 Cup Of Sunflower Oil' from the following year's The Fretted Neck' album - these tracks are laid-back, nonchalant refractions of talent, across which the aforementioned cycle through said covers of Ennio Morricone, Pierro Piccioni and Piero Umilliani's standout score cuts with ease.

Estrellas (3:38)
Review: Spasibo Records has been busy lining up plenty of great funk sounds that all seem to be dropping at once. One of them is this limited yellow and red marbled vinyl from The Great Revivers. The band hail from St Petersburg in Russia and these two instrumental tunes are perfect examples of their lush library funk sound. Both were recorded pre-pandemic back in 2019 at a vintage studio in an old church. The organs really shimmer and bring the heat to opening cut 'Adventures Begin' while 'Estrellas' dial down into a more late night and intimate atmosphere before the funky breaks and neat guitar riffs come on with full force.

Review: The Great Revivers is a funk and library band with a focus on organ laced grooves that hails from Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was formed around a decade or so ago from members of bands Wake&Bake! and The Reggaenauts and has put out a steady stream of very danceable 7"s since then. 'Adventures Begin' is their latest and it comes on the Spasibo label with lashing of loquacious saxophone and some nice loose, live drumming. Flip it over for something more laid back and starry eyed - 'Estrellas' has a soothing late night feel and brims with musicality.

Review: Releasing what is perhaps the most laid-back collection of funk tunes to hit our ears in years, Spasibo here see to the release of Kerbside Collection's two newest soul-manifestations. 'Bills Be Gawn' is like low-freq food for the heart; beginning with a funky boom-bap beat akin to that heard in early hip-hop when it became gangsta rap, the track has a super-fly bass end, bass-licking and trunculating to no end. 'Raid' is ever so slightly brighter and more fun, with janglier and sunnier sensibilities.

Review: Earlier this year American Shawn Lee and The Soul Surfers formed an unlikely but seriously funky alliance. The result is a Russian/US super group via London and they've already released a full eponymous album. Here are two of the LP's many highlights; first we have the deep swing and jazzy wafts of the ETA-style "Jose Chicago" where things develop into some divine clean breaks towards the end before dropping into much more of a cosmic pastoral idyll on "Four Track Mind". Stunning.

Practice What You Preach (part 2) (3:09)
Sticky Sticky-Sock-A-Poo (3:39)
Review: 'Practice What You Preach' is a standout track from the German funk band Poets Of Rhythm's debut record of the same name, first released on Soulciety in 1993. After a long hiatus on the albums front before a return to the limelight with a follow-up Ninja Tune LP in 2001, these guys nonetheless remained surely active on the 7"s circuit, which has sustained them since then. Little did we know or predict, however, that there existed a part two to the same track, which is essentially an instrumental version of the original 1993 track. On the B comes a fresh funker formerly released under the alias Mighty Continentals, with the band's Bo Baral laying down a rare solo guitar situation and singing about, well, god knows what.

Upper Class (instrumental - part 2) (4:11)
Review: In our eyes, there's no finer exponent of revivalist heavy funk than the Poets of Rhythm, a German band who has been keeping the flame alive for a new generation of DJs and dancers since the 1990s. Speaking of the '90s, this fine 45 boasts a previously unreleased "Part 2 - Instrumental" take on one of their earliest singles, 1994's "More Mess On My Thing". It's a fine chunk of Meters-esque Hammond funk that sounds like it could have been recorded in the mid 1970s. Over on the flip you'll find another previously unheard instrumental version of 1993 debut album track "Upper Class", which is a deeper and breezier affair that features some rather lovely flute and Rhodes solos.

Review: German funk act The Poets Of Rhythm have more than left their mark on a scene that wasn't so popular back in their heyday. They have got plenty of great albums to explore and several superb singles, of which this is one. 'Practice What You Preach' is a track from their debut album released on Soulciety in 1993. Despite a hiatus from albums until their return with a Ninja Tune LP in 2001, the band remained active in the 7"s circuit. Surprisingly, a part two to the same track exists, serving as an instrumental version of the original 1993 release. On the B-side, a fresh funk track, previously released under the alias Mighty Continentals, features Bo Baral delivering a rare solo guitar performance alongside ambiguous lyrical content.

Review: Boogaloo bandit and all-round organ slapping sugar man Adam Scone and his extensive troupe begin to tease us with sounds from their forthcoming sophomore album Blast Furnace. Landing a whole decade after their debut LP Mind Blower, you'll be pleased to hear they've not lost an ounce of their bite and mind-blowingly tight groovemanship. As always the organs take the lead but it's the full band laying down on both the sleazy, funk / boogaloo hybrid "Old Faithful" (watch out for those beautiful clean breaks) and the Booker T style blues workout on the B "Algiers Connection". Get to the furnace!

Review: Come on, its 2016, of course there are soul bands from Russia. More specifically, there's soul bands from Russia that make absolutely incredible music, and The Soul Surfers are one of them. They've been busy over the last 6-7 years, and the Spasibo label have been instrumental in getting their sound across to the masses. "Vladimir's Groove" is deep, funky and wet, filled with an awesome slap-back bass, a trippy cascade of organs and just a general feeling of "yeah". "Igor's Groove" is slower, more laid-back and possibly even better and bolder, bringing out the best out of this band and solidifying them as serious contenders for best soul kings of the post 2000's. A band to watch - keep 'em peeled!

Review: Following their two-part "Rap It Together" 45" with Will Sessions earlier this year, Russian funkateers The Soul Surfers return with two more blistering originals. Continuing their Booker T-edged signature, both instrumentals are well polished, smooth and perfectly Hammond-balanced. "Odd Love" is the more upbeat, dancefloor minded track while "Cruisin'" takes us up to lover's lane for an intimate session that doesn't disappoint.

Funky Sirtaki (2:33)
Review: In recent times, Russian outfit the Soul Surfers - whose studio is reportedly kitted out with vintage, Soviet-era gear - have focused on delivering a particularly psychedelic take on classic library music. On this top-notch 45 for Spasibo Records, they blend their love of quirky 1970s library sounds with the deep funk grooves that marked out their earliest releases a decade ago. A-side 'Russian Funk' offers a near-perfect blend of loose-limbed, bass-heavy funk grooves, spiralling Moog solos, recorder melodies (really), crisp guitars and reverb aplenty. Flip-side 'Funky Sirtaki', meanwhile, is basically a funk take on of those traditional Russian or Greek dance tunes that gets faster as it progresses. It will likely create pandemonium out on the dancefloor.

Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. The collaboration is a fruitful one with two sublime and timeless funk cuts featuring some bittersweet replaying of classic melodies.

Review: Spasibo Records present a fresh 7" by the Vicious Seeds, hailing from St. Petersburg. With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

On the flip side, 'Monthly Rainfall' delves into a soulful journey, characterized by cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks which create an atmosphere reminiscent of slow-jammed soul with a contemporary twist.

Something of an unheralded modern deep funk classic, it makes perfect sense that Spasibo Records has decided to give it a much-deserved single release. The track was co-produced by Cookin' On 3 Burners member Jake Mason and the heavyweight instrumental backing track - which is available for the first time on the flip - features many of Melbourne's finest funk musicians. The breakbeats are blistering, the horns heavy, the guitars flanged and the bass weighty; what's not to like?
