Review: Both of these funk gems are taken from a cult compilation Trans Groove Express, which explored the sounds of Express Records and was assembled by MURO. Fourth Wave now serve them up on a superb 7", starting with Maki Asakawa. 'Hohi Hitotsu' is a delightfully gentle and subtle dub with funky guitars adding movement while the sultry vocal soars. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' is a brighter and more retro 80s soul and boogie sound with glowing chords and snappy hits. The Japanese language vocal is emotive enough to mean plenty without understanding the meaning of the words.

Review: Poor Man's Friend Records has assembled a tasty new 7" featuring reggae legend Cornell Campbell. With a career spanning over 60 years, Campbell is known for his distinctive falsetto and both heartfelt love songs and deep spiritual roots music. His latest track again delivers a powerful message against judgment and ego: "Just try sweeping up your backyard, before you find fault with people's yard," he sings, quite rightly. Produced in a classic mid-70s roots style and recorded by the Poor Man's Friend Rhythm Section in Bristol, this one comes with a fine dub version by Yakka and horn arrangements by the Cornerstone Horn Section.

Review: A mock-vintage version of a well-known but also tragic reggae classic, 'Satta Massagana' by the Abyssinians. Legend has it that the original tune was slated for release on Studio One, but, for reasons unknown, the dubplate ended up rejected by the label's founder, Coxsone Dodd. Indeed, sometimes it's a record's repression, not its release (get it?), that lends it its staying power. To add insult to injury, this new cover version by the Dig This Way All Stars and Yakka was first produced in acetate form and ended up cracked and unplayable only weeks after its receipt. A miracle cure, in the form of a vinyl restoration service in Rome, salvaged the record: just know that you're in an extra lucky position to be hearing this one at all. A cursed record? Perhaps, but the release of 'Sata' also implies proof of the original song's point; that some higher power really did give praise.

It's a buttery smooth vocal harmony with swaggering drums and bass combos and nice plucked guitars. Review: Originally released in 1977, 'Deliver Me From My Enemies' is one of those roots reggae tunes that became something of a cornerstone of the gene from the visionary Vivian "Yabby You" Jackson. It is the title track of his third album and was recorded at Channel One Studio with mixing by the great King Tubby so was as real and authentic as it gets. It is a short and sweet sound that mixes up spiritual vocals with haunting production marked by Yabby You's signature mystical sound of minor-key melodies, deep bass and evocative horns. drumming. Backed by top session musicians, it reflects Jackson's deep Rastafarian beliefs and critiques of social injustice and marked a crucial release in the evolution of conscious reggae.

Review: Appearing here for the very first time on 7", this track from Vivian Jackson, aka Yabby You, was originally released as the title cut off the Jah Jah Way LP back in 1980. It was later pressed on a 12" by Yabby You some 20 years after its initial release and is one of those heavy, fat-bottomed dub cuts that demands to be played loud from a towering speaker stack while the sun is blazing. The bassline does most of the heavy lifting with dusty tambourines and passionate vocals adding the soul. The dub version on the flip gets some serious mixing desk treatment and tons of echo for even more mind-melting brilliance.

Inspired by themes of patience, art commodification, AI and unconditional love, this LP draws influence from Wes Montgomery, Rachmaninoff, Neurosis and Russian Circles and was written during a snowstorm retreat in early 2023 which meant the trio aimed for cinematic, experiential significance.

Review: The Young Souls spent some of their early years working with legendary producer Joe Gibbs. In 1968, they produced some iconic tracks and here come two of the standout tunes from the era on a Pressure Beat 7". 'Man A Wail' is raw, lo-fi, and built on a classic riddim with some soul-drenched vocals up top. 'Why Did You Leave' in the flip is a more up-tempo and full of sync swagger as well as lush vocal harmonies. Tow lovely tunes for any situation.

Review: South London singer Lola Young shares the sixth single from her second studio album This Wasn't Meant For You Anyway (2024) on limiited 7" coloured vinyl. A viral moment on TikTok spurred the popularity of this plaintive single, billed by the artist as an "ADHD anthem" and reproof of her last relationship; the lyrics track Young's misgivings about a romance gone sour, critiquing the many contradictory "too"s used to justify a given lover's impropriety: "I'm too messy, I'm too clean... I'm too clever, I'm too dumb... I'm too perfect till I show you that I'm not..." The song is brow-beaten and bluesy, bearing the emotive scars of a fraught time, and perfectly capturing the indie minimality of pop in its ideal incarnation in 2025.

'When We Die (Can We Still Get High?)' was first released on January 26, 2024 by Locomotion Recordings and Geffen Records and is a new school mix of alternative rock, psychedelia and hip-hop that explores themes of mortality and escapism with production by YUNGBLUD plus Matt Schwartz and Paul Meany. It's an introspective gem.

Review: Dumb Type Theater have been at the forefront of Japan's performance art landscape since 1984, although the years between then and now have seen some significant changes - culturally and in terms of the group. The death of Teiji Furuhashi, one of the central members, is just one example. A pivotal player in performances, he was often tasked with translating the instrumentation and arrangements of musician Toru Yamanaka into on-stage directions. Removed from that context, Yamanaka and Furuhashi's sounds still work incredibly well. There are aspects of Plan For Sleep that evoke the US avant garde of the time, perhaps reiterating the fact that the late-20th Century saw a closing of distances and a shared vision of where the future was heading among broad communities. Sound art, in the most musical and listenable sense.

Review: It's not hard to see just how ahead of their time Dumb Type were. And still are. Founded in Kyoto, Japan, in 1984, the artist collective looked to interpret and portray the changes they could see beginning to happen around them in society - specifically the start of the (information) technology age. Presenting work that took a dark and cynical view of the increasing importance and prevalence of equipment and digital in the every day, they do this though art exhibitions, performances and publications. Audiovisual installations have always been particularly prominent, and Every Dog Has His Day - one of two Dumb Theater albums previously only available on tape, now issued on vinyl for the first time - makes it clear music was never an afterthought. Credited to Toru Yamanaka, who wrote much of their heard work, and the late Teiji Furuhashi, who translated that onto stage, it's an avant garde essential.

Review: Re-rendered in a stunning full-length form, the groundbreaking soundtrack to the 1988 anime film Akira is here remixed in full by individual members of Geinoh Yamashirogumi, the elusive Japanese music collective behind the original Akira OST. Founded in 1974 by musician and agricultural scientist Tsutomu Ohashi, Geinoh Yamashirogumi still to this day adhere to a loose ecology, comprising hundreds of people with different occupations. Recreating folk music along modern dance musical and electronic lines - terraformed folktronica, if you will - the original Akira soundtrack was innovative, drawing on such Japanese folk musics as gamelan and noh while merging them into. Spawning many later remixes across electronica and dance music, this fresh remix record is fully overseen by director Katsuhiro Otomo and tracks larger-than-life remixes from Makoto Kubota, Kuniaki Haishima and Yasuharu Konishi, ragtag but chosen members of Geinoh Yamashirogumi.

Review: YASMIN's much loved A Scent Of Flowers album has more than stood the test of time which is why it is now being reissued for the first time. This edition also includes a cover of Roy Ayers' ubiquitous 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' which was the second successful single on the album which was first released in 1993. It's back by Soulshock who is known for his work with 2Pac and Monica, and Cutfather, famous for remixing Mark Morrison's 'Return Of The Mack.' Review: Yesterday's Children, a short-lived yet impactful psychedelic rock band from Cheshire-Prospect, Connecticut, carved a niche in the late 60s with their unique blend of garage rock and proto-heavy metal. Formed in 1966, the band's aggressive sound, underpinned by Denis Croce's high-pitched wails and fuzz-toned guitars, made them early contenders in the heavier end of the psych spectrum. Their self-titled 1970 LP i featuring tracks like the bludgeoning opener 'Paranoia', the slow-burning 'What of I' and the swinging, Cream-adjacent 'Sailing' i is now considered a cult classic. Despite poor commercial traction at the time, it captures a pivotal moment between the collapse of flower power and the rise of hard rock. First reissued in 2004 by Akarma, it's since been reclaimed as a forgotten milestone in US acid rock, its eight-track run unusually focused but also quite, quite feral.

In the lineage of Machine Girl, ecolagbohrsac2021 or Hakushi Hasegawa, 2022's Glitch Princess laid nutritious ground for Cmiel's now evermore fractious work, Evangelic Girl Is A Gun, which hears the somewhat alter-egoic Yeule now delve into the complexity of a fragmented identity, embracing the duality of light and shadow while echoing surreal animes, such as Serial Experiments Lain and Angel Egg. The LP reimagines Yeule as a haunting figure, exploring ego deaths and transformations in partnership with visual artist Vasso Vu.

Review: Based in New York City, YHWH Nailgun (pronounced "Yahweh") are a newfound experimental noise-rock four-piece who have varied acceptance on what can be deemed "noise". Built around the ludicrous percussive ability of drummer Sam Pickard whose use of rototoms conjures an organic yet mechanistic pulse, warped and compressed guitars collide with an array of synths and electronic elements all infused with the suffocated, ranting, rambling, unhinged shrieking of vocalist Zack Borzone. Their debut full-length 45 Pounds bubbles with a similar art-noise sass-punk quality to very early HEALTH (before they rebooted as the industrial-metal trio they're known as today) yet attempting to still fit in with the likes of The Jesus Lizard or Chat Pile. They don't whatsoever, and they're all the better for it, as these unhinged 21 minutes condense saccharine, bubblegum machinery into some of the most frenetic compositions recorded all year. Just because it can only be described as "noise-rock" doesn't mean it necessarily sounds like noise-rock.

Review: If there's anything Yo La Tengo have in spades, it's a superb music taste. This collection of outtakes and demos guides you through the inspired moments of creativity that they share. 'Cast A Shadow' covers K Records head honcho's group Beat Happening brilliantly. 'Speeding Motorcycle' goes one further - it has the actual Daniel Johnston featuring on it as well as being a cover. The latter came from his fifth self-released cassette tape, Yip/Jump Music. There's also a Ramones, Wire and John Cale cover. We think you get our point - astounding references. Of their own material, 'Sunsquashed' - a 26-minute jam that emphasizes their experimental and improvisational nature is a must. Free from the shackles of producing an album in the traditional sense, what you end up with is a fantastic and imaginative collection, which hammers home just how brilliant Yo La Tengo are for indie rock.

Review: Japanese pop duo Yaosabi share the vinyl edition of their critically acclaimed song 'Idol'. 'Idol' is a combination of Japanese idol-styled pop, hip-hop, rock, and video game music, and depicts the two-faced nature of a fictional star in the Japanese idol industry; the record also serves as the lead theme music for the anime series Oshi No Ko, in turn based on Aka Akasaka's short story 45510, both of which also tracks Japan's cultural interest in the figure of the idol. This is a knowing slice of Japanese bubblegum, nonetheless aware of its murkier underbelly; it also packs a crazed confluence of idiomatic borrowings, from Atlanta hip-hop to orchestral music, and ties them all together with a single bow.
