Ernie Ruso - "Stroke It" (3:53)
DJ Nomad - "African Boy" (3:55)
Jona J - "A Change Will Come" (6:25)
Review: Many Hands is a fresh label helmed by Jona Jefferies and Kava that here kicks out an eclectic EP with four tracks from various members of its musical family. Dan Aikido opens with '0800 TXT4 Herb,' a smooth fusion piece that builds a laid-back groove, blending fretless bass, jazzy keys and soulful vocals all reminiscent of Rare Silk's 'Storm.' Ernie Ruso's 'Stroke It' offers slow, sensual r&b infused with P-funky wah-wah effects while DJ Nomad's 'African Boy' brings upbeat pop house next to funky organ and a female reggae MC.Jefferies' closer 'A Change Will Come' samples Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a rave-inspired beat and soulful piano. Cracking stuff.

Review: 'Dark Clouds' is a powerful anthem about overcoming life's toughest challenges. The song embodies resilience by conveying that victory is always possible, even in difficult times. Its uplifting melody and infectious chorus blend English, Wollof and an Arabic, African and Caribbean patois to make a unique, cross-cultural sound. Produced by the legendary Mad Professor at Ariwa Sounds, the track offers hope and strength while inspiring us to keep pushing forward despite adversity over a compelling rhythm.

Review: Remastered from a lost cassette in composer David Toop's archive, Unsettled Scores Records has secured the rights to a first-ever release of the legendary title track from Dick Fontaine's iconic 1988 graffiti documentary. Originally airing on Channel 4, the film followed Brim's 1985 journey from the Bronx to the UK, where he linked up with future icons like Goldie and 3D of Massive Attack. A formative piece for graffiti writers and hip-hop heads alike, Brim's 'Bombin'' became a cult classic and remained so. This long-awaited 7" includes the full version and unreleased mixes.

Review: The legendary Fatman is back with another must-have 10" release featuring Don Carlos's iconic vocal roots classic from 1980. The A-side includes the full 12" disco mix, highlighted by Robbie Shakespeare's unforgettable bassline which adds to the fresh, deep groove of this perfectly aged track. On the flip side, you'll find Delroy Wilson's infectious 'Live Good' alongside its dub version. The OG is a heavyweight cut with plenty of FX, echo and lo-fi sounds all making it an unforgettable jam. Essentially this is an absolute no-brainer for reggae and roots music lovers.

Creation Stepper & The Disciples Riddim Section - "Nazarite Vow" (mix 4) (4:16)
Review: The Disciples & Creation Stepper came together for 'True Nazarite' back in 1991 and it was an instant classic on the dub circuit. It has long been sought after by collectors and now comes back as a reissue from Partial Records who have done a fine job of cutting it so that the deep, heavy UK roots sound, which has become pricey on the second-hand market, is as clear as possible. Produced by Russ D, the crucial tune has thunderous sub-bass and bouncing keys and dubbed to the max across three extra mixes. 'True Nazarite (Version)' carries traces of the vocal, while the B-side 'Nazarite' dials up digital keyboard melodies and echo effects. The fourth mix strips it all down to skeletal toms and shivering bass for a stark, raw dub experience.

Review: In late 2023, Tokyo-based musician Daigo Sakuragi moved to London where he revisited recordings made with fellow Japanese artists. Inspired by the city's energy and atmosphere, he crafted Togenkyo, a 28-minute fusion of early 2000s folktronica and contemporary ambient music that now comes as two long continuous pieces on one slab of vinyl. Layering immersive synth textures with spatial production, he grounds the piece in organic drum and bass grooves while a saxophone elegantly weaves through the soundscape. Togenkyo reflects an inner utopia that is attainable yet imperfect and is a comforting, meditative work.

No Man Is Free (version) (2:55)
Review: Ronnie Davis' 'No Man Is Free' is a powerful roots reggae anthem that has everything a good tune needs to in order to make an impact on the head, heart and heel, namely soulful melodies with conscious lyrics. Released in the 1970s, the track addresses themes of oppression, inequality and the quest for freedom and reflects the socio-political struggles of the time. Davis' deep, resonant vocals ride atop a rich rhythmic backing which is typical of the era's classic reggae sound. Known for his work with The Itals and as a solo artist, Davis delivers a message of unity and resistance here that reminds us that true freedom is a shared human right, not just an individual pursuit.

Review: "The final episode of this soap-opera of a band will be released in the form of a 7 inch on 24.01.2025." If this is your first encounter with De Nooit Moede, then welcome to the wake of the best group you sadly only cottoned onto when they were posting about their final release on Instagram. The Brussels seven piece's swan song certainly fits the bill for funeral soundtrack, with RIP's garage-punk-wave washing through your mind with equal parts melancholy and swagger. Four tracks run from the staccato-step of 'Doopsel', which opens the scoring and sets the mood perfectly, through the more melodic 'Sluiswachter', blissfully downtrodden 'Fake Niet', and motoring 'Alledaagse Nachten'. Each is as infectiously groovy as the next, and cooler than pretty much everything else you will have been listening to this week/month/year. More Flemish attitude, please.

Review: Emerging from Southside Richmond, USA, The Deadbeats started as a teen garage band with a soulful edge. In 1966, they recorded their first single at the low-fi Richmond Sound Stages, self-released on the Greenedeem label. Over the next year, the band matured, shedding their stage makeup and refining their sound. In 1967, they travelled to Philadelphia to re-record 'No Second Chance' in a professional studio and created a polished garage-soul classic on Strata Records. Despite its energy, the release faded into obscurity during the Summer of Love but now gets reissued as a one-sided 7".

Review: Deep Purple have been rocking long enough to have written a song in response to the infamous Montreux Casino fire, which nearly killed Frank Zappa, forever changing his vocal range, in 1971. By the time that smash hit single came out - complete with arguably rock & roll's most iconic riff - the band were already on their sixth studio album. Skip forward 51 years after the track came out, alongside the Machine Head album, and we're still writing about Ian Gillan, Roger Glove, Ian Paice, Don Airey and Simon McBride. In a lot of ways, our thoughts are still the same. That blues psychedelia at work here, and the work still sets a benchmark for heavy rock and proto-metal. Of course, both canons have evolved and developed since their inception - which Deep Purple had a big hand in - but when you're faced with the pioneers and their new single, they rarely sound this complete.

Review: Sheffield rock royalty Def Leppard build momentous hype for their upcoming tour alongside Journey with the release of their brand new single 'Just Like 73'. Written in collaboration with Rage Against The Machine axeman Tom Morello, the banger comes complete with an absurd music video of computer generated de-aged models of the band and a parachuting Morello making their way to Earl's Court to perform for a massive crowd of adoring fans. Elaborating on the experience, the guitar guru stated - "I had a blast rocking a solo on 'Just Like 73.' I played 'Rock of Ages' in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand-new tune that's one of their best." Pressed on limited 7" wax with an alternative version on the flip, the Leppard evidently still have plenty of sugar in the petrol tank.

The group consisted of four young male singers, two of whom were Manny's cousins, Keith and Ellis Hill, along with their cousin Jaime and teenage friend, and all were all aged 16-17 and from Chester, Pennsylvania. Under Manny's guidance, they recorded this soulful dancer in 1968. 'Rebel Muzik' hits plenty of key dancehall hallmarks - the shiny, metallic digital chords, the stepping rhythms, the swaggering bass down low and some fine bars up top. Each member - including Miles on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums - was a creative force in their own right. Cookin' proved that and came on Prestige as the first in a series of four albums, later followed by Steamin', Workin' and Relaxin'. Review: This limited edition and hand-numbered reissue features the complete performance by the Miles Davis Sextet from the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1958. The ensemble, which is rightly one of jazz history's most celebrated, included Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Although this iconic lineup was short-lived, they made a truly lasting impact on jazz as they went on to record the legendary Kind of Blue album just six months later. As a special bonus, this release also includes rare broadcast performances by both the Miles Davis Quintet and Sextet from the same period.

Review: You can feel the energy emanating from these rare, almost-lost recordings of heroic San Francisco punks the Dead Kennedys. Laid down in 1978, the same year the band got together, it's hard to work out what's more remarkable - the rabid vibe itself, or the fact that rabid vibe seemed to come so effortlessly and naturally once the founding members joined forces. It's almost like it was meant to be. Across 16 tracks that vitality is laid bare in all its ferocious glory. And while it's great to hear the origin stories behind some of the DK's biggest songs - 'Kill The Poor', 'Holiday In Cambodia', 'Forward to Death' - it's perhaps more interesting getting to grips with the initial ideas that didn't come to fruition in the end. Either way, basking in the glory of an outfit with protest and anti-establishment attitude bleeding from every orifice still feels fantastic.

Review: Formed in 1967 in Ladbroke Grove, London, by musician and psychedelic counter-culture icon Mick Farren, this Deviants album is the second of three that they released at the end of the 60s. The chaotic ensemble of misfits were arguably the first anarchist rock band in Britain and enjoyed not taking life too seriously behind the mic. 'Somewhere To Go' and 'Jamies Song' is Stooges-esque proto-punk; 'You've Got To Hold On' blends 60s psychedelia with proto punk and sounds like it may have influenced Black Lips. 'Slum Lord' has an amateurish lo-fi charm and 'Pappa-Oo-Moa-Moa' is a Captain Beefheart-esque banger. Meanwhile, 'Let's Loot The Supermarket' epitomes their shambolic nature and shows how unafraid of embracing chaos they were.

Review: Zani Diabate's Super Djata Band was a leading Malian orchestra in the 1980s. They were known for blending Wasulu hunter music, griot praises, Senufo dances and Fula and Mandingo repertoire with Western psychedelia, blues, and Afrobeat into their own unique forms. In 1982 their album cemented Diabate's place among legendary West African guitarists as he mesmerised listeners with eight vibrant compositions featuring plenty of his hypnotic guitar work. Now it gets reissued on Numero Group and the record solidifies his status as a mythic figure in West African music so for anyone with an appreciation of house styles it is a must.

Review: The special and almost 50-year-old live album captures the legendary singer-songwriter at the height of his career and performing to an ecstatic crowd in Melbourne. It's an electrifying listen full of Diamond's powerful stage presence as he blends his iconic hits with a raw, emotive delivery. The 1975 performance features fan favourites like 'Sweet Caroline,' 'Cracklin' Rosie' and 'Solitary Man,' each infused with the energy of the live setting. Diamond's voice, both tender and commanding, shines throughout the set so makes this a lovely listen for fans old or new.

Review: Cuban-born Modesto Dura was a disciple of mambo innovator Perez Prado but also played his own crucial role in Latin dance music's mid-century evolution. His distinctive percussion work features on numerous 1950s hits including tracks by Esquivel, Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, and Lena Horne. On his 1960 solo debut, Duran assembled a stellar lineup of conga players in Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Juan Cheda and they created a cinematic blend of Afro-Cuban, cha-cha, and exotic jazz styles. This album offers a rich, percussive vibe while showcasing Duran's influential contribution to Latin music.

Review: United brings together two musical giants in the form of guitarist Lionel Loueke and bassist Dave Holland and they combine in to great effect in what is an inspiring collaboration. Loueke's masterful fusion of West African traditions and modern jazz pairs seamlessly with Holland's deep, resonant bass to make for a greatly harmonious and creative sound. Both musicians have had profound impacts on jazz: Loueke's collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sting and others, and Holland's influential work with icons like Miles Davis and Chick Corea, have defined the genre over the years. While they've worked together in various ensembles, this album marks their first duo collaboration and results in an extraordinary fusion that celebrates unity, creativity and cultural roots in music.

Katya Shirshkova - "Le Heron" (16:33)
David Maranha - "A Reuniao" (18:28)
Review: Vocalist, composer, lecturer, performance artist. And we can throw visionary into the mix, too. Katya Shirshkova wears a number of different hats, each as innovative and creative as the next. However, few sound as good as when she's matched with celebrated musical architect David Maranha for a two-track single that's nigh-on impossible to describe. Let alone find much information about. We'll do our best to articulate, though. Le Heron and A Reuniono are polar opposites attracted by their overall impact. On the first, we have vocalisation taking on many forms and sounds, each as strange and beguiling as the next, and really showing the range human voices are capable of. Sometimes soothing, sometimes shrill. The second replaces this with an electric guitar, running through tune-ups, tune-downs, distorted crescendos, muffled breakdowns, and other out-of-this-world effects.
