This tune was recorded over Skype during the pandemic and shows that the pairing of Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson and have lost nothing since we last heard from them - it is snaking atmospheric, deep dub with plenty of heady pads and cinematic designs. Review: A 10" featuring the finest that highlife has to offer, Crentsil was a figurehead of Ghanian music during the 70s and 80s who was introduced to highlife music at the turn of the 90s - a combination of pop, jazz, disco, and funk. 'Obi Baa Wiase' and 'Sika Be Ba' are two tracks with a close-knit message of gratitude, hope and faith between them, with the former being the staple track of Crentsil's long career after being played at weddings, festivals, and live concerts by local bands. A pair of incredible tracks produced by Charles Amoah utilising limited equipment to create an authentic party atmosphere, jovial flutes and plucky strings are the accompaniment to A.B. Entsils's proclamation of joy - put this on at the party and the room are sure to start moving.

Review: Roy Ayers staked a bold claim by flaunting the fact that he had 'Reach[ed] The Highest Pleasure' back in June '77. Unfortunately for us back then, this lifetime hedonistic milestone - documented in instrumental funk form - was shelved for reasons unknown beyond simple artistic oversight. As said, this slick solo instrumental for drums, bass and vibraphone is a perfect soul-jazz, chillout trifecta, one for the rarities collectors.

Review: Second time around for Julianna Barwick and Rafael Anton Irisarri's lauded contribution to the THESIS label's series of collaborative 10-inch singles. The 2017 set has been in high demand since it first appeared in stores, and with a limited number available outside the US for the first time we're expecting it to sell out in double-quick time. Musically, it's one of the most picturesque things that Irissari has been involved in. The untitled opener delivers a near perfect fusion of layered improvised vocals and wispy ambient electronics, while the track that follows brilliantly builds to a crescendo of Tangerine Dream style arpeggio melodies, densely layered textures and acid-esque motifs. The flipside opener is a more softly spun, deep ambient soundscape, while the EP's closing cut is sparkling, spacey and hugely alluring.

Review: Bedroom beat producer Blank Check has teamed up with Honolulu's Aloha Got Soul and Tokyo's Grand Gallery for this majestic new six-song EP which comes on tidy 10" vinyl. It's mega limited with only 300 copies produced and it showcases loop-based music that evokes a floating sensation, which is reminiscent, say the accompanying notes, of Tommy Guerrero's world view. The instrumental sound features a dub-like quality that perfectly captures an urban mellow vibe that feels both original and authentic. Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Review: Effective communication relies on being succinct. Boygenius clearly know this given their track record for naming things. 2023 saw the trio - Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus - drop their debut album, The Record, and now, a few months down the line, we have The Rest: an EP made up of the other bits that didn't quite make said LP.
If you're completely new to the band, then let's start by saying these offcuts that didn't fit would put many a group to shame, which tells you just how good the full record is. Here, though, we have the lo-fi, dream-indie-pop crackle and fuzz of 'Black Hole', a track of huge emotional resonance, heartfelt, heartbroken yet hopeful semi-folk on 'Afraid of Heights', and the delicate, tender, and incredibly personal letting go balladry of 'Voyager', just for starters. Sublime confirmation Boygenius are your new favourite thing.

What You Won't Do For Love (reissue) (limited heart-shaped red vinyl 10")

Review: The enduringly popular 'What You Won't Do For Love' by Bobby Caldwell, which stood out as the highlight soul single from his debut album Bobby Caldwell from 1978, served as great sample fodder for many a legendary musician to come thereafter, such as Tupac Shakur. The record has thus indubitably imprinted itself on the collective music fan's psyche, what with its leaping chorus refrains and resolute phrase-stop hook. Now, Be With Records make a one-of-a-kind statement, honouring the history of the record as it was first pressed: the U.S. first edition came as a 10", heart-shaped red vinyl record. And while the redo does indeed look similar, it sounds different: Caldwell's 'Open Your' Eyes' replaces the original 'Love Won't Wait' on the B-side, further hammering home the shag-trimmed, blue-eyed singer's brilliant range.

Review: Seven Psalms finds Australia's most imperious musical misfit Nick Cave leaving his Bad Seeds at home and teaming up with frequent collaborator Warren Ellis for a limited 10". The spoken word pieces on this record are the result of a daily song writing practice over a week during lockdown - Cave himself describes them as "small, sacred songs," set to appropriately subtle musical accompaniment. Recorded during the sessions for Cave and Ellis' 2021 album Carnage, it's a rich work in its own right that offers a different perspective on Cave's considerable gifts as a soothsayer.

Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

Review: Expansion's focus right now is on reissuing classic tracks alongside a newer version of it. They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Flip it over and we're taken to 2008's live version of the same tune by Bembe Segue. It's a little less intense but no less busy, with silky jazz grooves and new vocals layering in some future soul.

Soft Sighs: Female Soul Sounds From Hungary 1973-78 (hand-numbered 10" + insert limited to 300 copies)

Review: Zsuzsa Cserhati was a key player in the Hungarian pop scene of the seventies. She has real talent but was maltreated by the industry so never fulfilled her potential. This new series aims to shine a light on what was never known as a soul scene in the county, but could have been given the wealth of great material produced in a small space of time in the years in question. Most of the sounds never made it out of Hungary but that all changes now. Zsuzsa's two cuts on this 10" are her best ever - 'Puha Sohajok' is sensual but tight and 'Ne Nezz A Napba' is lovely soft soul. The other two cuts are similarly essential making this a fine gateway into this little known scene.

Review: The brotherly pair of Donnie & Joe Emerson recorded just one album in their barn out in the remote countryside of America back in the 1970s. One of the most standout tunes form that initially private press only and now well known and cult LP is 'Baby' which gets reissued every so often. Here it resides on the A-side of this new blue vinyl, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. On the flip is 'Tonight' which is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Review: Ahead of the release of the Rebirth of Detroit album which features Motor City upstarts MCing over DIlla beats, this taster 10" drops two stone cold slices of head-snapping hip hop that made Dilla such a legend amongst beatsmiths. Danny Brown is on fearsome form on "Jay Dee's Revenge", slightly delirious and completely on the attack in his flow, but it's all dressing for the utterly monstrous beat underneath. A big bass lick and nagging melodic hooks make this an unmissable reappropriation of the Dilla legacy. "Birthright" finds the excellent Guilty Simpson throwing down his laconic delivery over a sparser beat with the drums at the front of the mix.
