Acid Sessions Vol 3
Acid Sessions Vol 3 (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: ZC 039. Rel: 13 Mar 25
Acidulant - "Serpentacid" (5:19)
Sarufaromeo & Papaverhof - "Acid Nihonshu" (5:18)
G303 - "Live Long & Prosper" (5:07)
Paul Renard - "SO36" (5:23)
Review: Acid Sessions Vol. 3 is another white-knuckle journey into the world of acid with five top talents in the field all pushing their own limits. Acidulant opens with "Serpentacid' featuring hypnotic 303 grooves and relentless energy, then Sarufaromeo & Papaverhof deliver 'Acid Nihonshu' which blends atmospheric depth with chaotic acid vibes. G303 takes you beyond with 'Live Long and Prosper,' an interstellar anthem filled with cosmic acid and resonant grooves. Paul Renard closes with 'SO36' which is all about the fat rhythms and powerful dancefloor drive. Long live acid is what we say.

Alien Rain - "Holo Sexual" (6:19)
Akkaelle - "Acid Mood" (4:47)
Sour - "Doesn't Matter" (6:04)
Dima Gastroler - "Maroon" (5:45)
Review: The sixth release in the 303 Pattern series marks the first time artists' identities are revealed. What doesn't change is the fact this is a powerful 12" of hard-hitting, hypnotic and atmospheric acid techno with the legendary Roland TR-303 at its core. Alien Rain makes his debut on the label with 'Holosexual's' raw drums and distorted acid lines, Akkaelle's 'Acid Mood' delivers funky, bouncy techno energy with atmospheric depth and Sour returns with another hypnotic, high-intensity bomb. Closing in style is Dima Gastroller who drops a banger of an acid techno track that should come with a health warning for anyone with a weak heart.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: The late Susumu Yokota's deep, linear, heady take on techno as Anima Mundi gets a reissue with remixes to boot. The title track of this eighth outing from Cosmic Soup is 'Hebula' and is the sort of grinding, unrelenting pumper that is subtle but high impact, especially mentally. It is also the perfect track for the remixers to tackle: first is Dax J who ups the ante with rugged percussive patterns then Japanese maestro Wata Igarashi adds two versions. One is an organic and heady affair with sustained pads and jumbled toms, the other is a psychedelic and colourful head melter

Protection (7:33)
Review: We shall never apologise for our love for the work of Steve O'Sullivan. His contributions to the world of dub techno are second to none. They are also mad consistent both in style and quality which means they never age. Here he steps up to Lempuyang with his Blue Channel alias alongside Jonas Schachner aka Another Channel for more silky smooth fusions of authentic dub culture and Maurizo-style techno deepness. Watery synths, hissing hi-hats with long trails and dub musings all colour these dynamic grooves. They're cavernous and immersive and frankly irresistible and the sort of tracks that need to be played loud in a dark space. In that context, you'll never want them to end.

Blue Hour - "Afterglow" (5:49)

Steffi - "Volley 5" (6:31)
Newa - "Seduction" (5:48)
Review: Blue Hour have dropped a couple of essential new 12"s this month and here is one of them. It's another of their famous various artist's collections, all with a focus on the deeper end of the techno spectrum. The eponymous Blue Hour kicks off with 'Afterglow' which has wispy neon synth trail and soft, rubbery drum and bass blends that take you into a cosmic sky. Dold's 'Warning' is more textural and raw with its percussion and synth energy and Steffi's 'Volley 5' is driving, dynamic, dubby techno for intimate basements. Newa's 'Seduction' is a psychedelic wonder to close.

Arian Cerddor - "Flyswatter" (7:14)
Niels Jensen - "Oasis" (6:28)
Diego - "Import" (6:45)
Sevn - "Angelic" (7:32)
Review: This EP first arrived back in 2001 on the legendary Swiss label Acquit. It's a favourite of underground heads who appreciated it futuristic electro and techno styles and so now all these years later is getting a repress. It sounds as good as ever, with the thumping kick drums and sparse chords of Niels Jensen's 'Oasis' opening up in blistering physical fashion. Diego's 'Import' then roll on a more liquid and dubby rhythm and Sevn's 'Angelic' is a masterful bit of booming drums programming that is thrilling stripped back but inescapably effective.

Mike Clark & Marcus Harris - "Hey"
Santonio Echols - "Piano In The Light" (Emanuell Echols mix)
Brian Kage - "This Saturday Night"
Ryan Sadorus - "Down Below"
Review: Upstairs Asylum is kicking off the year in some style with a couple of killer new EPs. This one is the first in what is presumably a new series to showcase the talents of the Motor City. Mike Clark & Marcus Harris get things underway with 'Hey' which has a subtly uplifting feel thanks to the bright, sustained chords and cuddly drums. Santonio Echols's 'Piano In The Light' (DJ Emanuell Echols mix) is laidback, playful deep house with magical chord work and Brian Kage brings his classy depths to the smooth grooves of 'This Saturday Night.' Ryan Sadorus brings things to a close with the smoky 'Down Below.'

Under Black Helmet - "Nebula" (4:55)
Stigmata - "Shiver" (5:30)
Florian Meindl - "Mainframe" (5:12)
Review: There is plenty of experimental work at play int his new various artists' collection on Flash. Cloned Existence sets that tone with the brief synth exploration that is 'Wave 1' when Gael & Jolly take off with the much more punchy and thudding techno of 'Paradigm Shock' which is weird up with all sorts of synth designs, effects and layers of reverb. Under Black Helmet ups the ante further with one of those bulky techno grooves that locks you in the moment and Stigmata then brings big room 90s vibes with layers of tangled synth melting the mind. Florian Meindl brings things to a close with gritty, scraping bass, reverb-heavy kicks and pure warehouse techno heaviness.

B2 Martin Modulate & Sam DFL - "Monster" (7:11)
Review: The Stay Up Forever label hits release number 13 but there isn't a bit of bad luck in sight - instead, this is a potent EP of eyes-wide techno from Sam DFL who links up with a quartet of different collaborators and aims, it seems, simply to blow your brains. These jams are laden with hard techno tropes and distorted, fuzzy bass as well as video game signifiers, trance-techno pads and bright, visceral, vibrant melodies. Hammer Mode & Sam DFL's 'Bad Time 4 Acid' is a particular standout here for its high speed and compelling acid grooves.

Review: FOXBAM INC is back to build on the momentum of their first EP with a second one that packs a mighty punch. This one kicks off with EBY, who this year has been cooking up acid for 40 years and here offers the warped low ends and garage-techno power of 'Goldtooth'. Foxtrot vs Ma Bla then mashes up old school samples with earth-shattering bass on 'Deep Down Inside' and bRz vs Stije is a double-time hard techno stomper with warped synths and twisted bass that is inspired by and named after ISCO, a concept from Einstein's general theory of relativity that makes predictions about the dynamics of black holes.

Review: EC Underground is back with more inquisitors of low-end heavy sounds on Bass Scene Investigation vol 1 and again digs deep into the worlds of electro, techno, breakbeat and IDM. The compilation kicks off with the skittish percussive patterns of Illektrolab's 'Making Heads Dip', then heads into moody ground with ADJ, Pablo Funk brings some menacing synth work and Errorbeauty gets all weird and trippy with some mad electronics. Francois Dillinger offers a dystopian electro sound full of irresistibly jacked-up drums. A fine investigation indeed.

Review: The legendary 'Solaris' is a standout tune from Kareem's 1997 release CICLOP on Berlin-based label Zhark. Originally, CICLOP combined diverse styles including industrial hip-hop, cinematic ambience and dub techno and created a unique, gritty soundscape as a result. Solaris stood out for its raw, brutally minimalist approach and now these new remixes from cult favs Orphx, Rrose, SHXCXCHCXSH and Kareem breathe new life into them with lots of lo-fi synth designs, muggy atmospheres, dense, foggy drones and plenty of rolling and dubbed out rhythms.

Review: After a superb debut outing, Purveyance is back with another standout EP of driving and hypnotic techno. This second heavyweight offering is a split EP with Linear System taking care of the A-side. 'Unknown Coordinates' kicks off with muscular rhythms and bit hits all made more eerie by some spooky pads and spoken words. 'Unlocated Call' then keeps it deep and heady with more taught synth phrases peeling off the beats. Soul Lazh then steps up for two cuts, firstly the edgy and tense synth sounds and pummelling beats of 'Breda' which is perfect for sunrise wig-outs, then the warped and linear techno menace of 'IJplein'.

Review: AcidLab is back with a fourth dose of medicine and this one comes on translucent red vinyl with various different artists behind the beats. Musikaddikt's 'Acid War' is a straight-up techno banger with oversized hi-hats. Tassid & Eski offer up the best named tack of the year with 'Ok You Cunts' which is raved-up hard techno, Acidrats & Skandal get even more wild and unhinged with their barrage of wind-up melodies and hard-edge and flat-footed beats on 'Massive Murder' and last of all comes Crime with 'Knife Blast which is a big distorted wall of white knuckle rave-techno, not for the faint-hearted.

Review: SIKU's various artists offerings always result in a nice and varied sound across two sides of vinyl and the sixth such drop is another one worth of attention for techno heads. Onoffon opens with 'Matter What' which rides on raw drums with slapping hits and stark synths, while Sebastian's 'Dreams Metaphors' has a ghoulish energy and dark, twisted synth menace. Opening chord cascade 'Figure Eight' by Pink Concrete contrasts sharply to tunnelling techno-body suite 'The Dream Of Motion' by Krow, signalling several more tuff propulsions to come: most notably Sayid K's 'No Lights', a balmy nightscape from the newcomer, where digital zaps initially double up as hi-hats.

Save Your Atoll - "Psyop" (5:56)
Review: The note with this new collection from Fur:ther Sessions is a quote by the Latin thinker Cicero. "We must live to enjoy the freedom that can benefit our friends and harm no one." It is certainly something to ponder while you get lost in the deeply immersive techno that comes with it. Psyk'scaptly titled 'Static Drift' does fizz with a microscopic sense of electrical activity while Shoal's deep, speedy, meditative 'Backflash' swirls with cosmic waves. Blazej Malinowski's 'Beyond The Veil Of Sleep' has a darker core thanks to the twisted synth phrases that worm their way all through the middle and Save Your Atoll then allows a little melodic light to shine into his hallucinogenic roller 'Psyop.' Smart stuff for both head and heel.

His superb Delusions EP blends electro and techno from the starry cosmic trip of the opener to the more twisted synth lines of 'Hey23' via the slicker tech snares and kicks of 'About The Past'. Review: Pi Electronics bring four classy artists together on this new 12". It marks the start of the Limitation series and opens with the deft, moody broken beat techno and unsettling synth ambience of Sam KDC's 'Dominion.' Interviews then ups the intensity with the frosty and rusty loops of 'Crawler' which lurches back and forth with real menace, and Zevla's 'Yours Is Mine' then keeps the pressure on with more tight drum loops, lashing of synth static, corrugated low ends and general dystopian vibes. This is intense, dense techno from the off and after 'Texas Dancing ' locks you in, 'The Moon Sacrifice' layers up fizzing lines and undulating bass with warped synths from another paint. 'Come Again' has hammering kicks and more slinky baselines this time with raw punk energy and 'Seductionizer' also brings great texture and a rather hellish vocal edge to slamming electro-techno low ends. The US talent has done it all in his time and brings plenty of musicality to his work, which is mostly couched in-house but for this one-sided and limited edition 7" heads off into techno territory. 'Track 1' is a blistering cut with coarse hits and smeared pads all turbo-powered by some driving drums that are deep but direct. Unlikely Companions (Marco Passarani's Nature remix) (6:43)
Review: Secondo is an artist we have long been keen to hear more from so this return to vinyl is welcome indeed. It comes on a hand-stamped white label 12" in the form of 'Unlikely Companions'. This one is a cosmic deep house sound with an alien energy, crispy hits and smeared pads that bring colour and introspection. The drums are well designed to and help make this one as heady as it is cinematic. Marco Passarani's Nature remix on the flip gets a little more warped and dark with unsettling sci-fi ambiance.

Verdrangung (5:22)
Einfuhlung (3:56)
Ersetzung (5:57)
Review: This is a welcome reissue of some textbook deep Detroit dub and techno. 'Verdichtung' opens up with some superb rhythms and prickly percussion, all softened by prying synth leads and smeared pads. 'Verdrangung' is just as deep with silky broken beats and more woozy, alluring pads lodging deep in your psyche. 'Einfuhlung' ups the ante with more raw and direct drums and techno leaning hi hats but still plenty of warm machine soul and 'Ersetzung' shuts down with acid-tinged lines, zippy synths and compelling, physical drum patterns.

Confusion (with Glowal - extended mix) (6:15)
Poison (extended mix) (6:10)
Review: Afterlife is one of melodic techno's most recognisable brands and a label with a very specific sonic signature. It's one you will either love or hate and this EP will likely not change that as it very much fits with the usual musical MO. It's a powerful solo outing from Adam Sellouk and start with an opening collaboration with KAS:ST that mixes up tough drums and deep synth emotions. 'Confusion' sees him team up with Glowal for more synth techno melodrama and last of all 'Poison' marries heartfelt vocals with sombre stabs and sweeping beats to lift dancers off their feet.

Review: Based in the Amsterdam area and banging out his take on techno since around 2016 on some fine labels, Bob Semp is back on previous home Planet Rhythm. His sleek style is classy and sophisticated as shown on 'Dilemma', a pulsing linear roller with plenty of depth and drive. The drums on 'Moisty Mire' get a little more robust and muscular but are still looped to hypnotic effect and 'Fable' brings a drunken synth line to the fore for some nice off-balance funk. A trio of smart, evocative tunes come on the B-side to make this a brilliantly useful and coherent EP.

Review: Open Channel For Dreamers is back with another essential journey into Dan Piu's extensive production archive. These cuts come under his Sensefinite alias and date back to the early '90s. The way they have been assembled makes for a superb journey into Piu's artistic evolution with four forgotten and unreleased tracks each embodying the innovation and creativity of the era. 'Manticore' is warped dub tech with a characterful bassline then 'Creation Of The Posthuman' shows the power of synth modulation to melt the mind. There's a crisp and hurried feel to 'Repto Alarm' then 'Insectoids Sighted' layers in lush ambient synth scapes to silky tech drums.

Review: Sweet Harmony is back with a compilation bursting with colourful shapes, textures and fresh techno rhythms. Anatole Serre's 'Hyperdulia' is a fast-paced fusion of drums, breakbeats and subtle allure that is followed by Xiaolin's 'Breath of Water,' a more ethereal yet still-driving percussive trip. Review: This shadowy collective known as Servants of Struggle brings together a team of acid innovators including two legendary figures, one of which is a bonafide acid house pioneer. However the focus now must be not on who's behind it, but on the unmistakable sound this crew creates. With funk-laden 303 basslines, gritty vocals, driving kicks and punchy percussion, they deliver a raw, attitude-filled sound that channels the rebellious nature of early acid. The result is a set of tracks that pay homage to the genre's roots while pushing it forward, all fuelled by an electrifying dark energy.

Review: It feels like it has been a hot minute since we hear from techno mainstay Samuel L Session, but thankfully he is now back with a new outing on wax thanks to his own SLS label. The opener 'Legacy' starts with a dark and moody bassline and hunched-over kicks. It's shady but alluring with its snappy percussion adding bite. 'Bisou' is more classic techno with sustained chords and loopy main motifs amping up the energy levels. 'Eric's Hit' then sinks into dusty deep house territory but it still packs a proper punch under some mice aloof male vocals and rugged, sparse chord stabs.

Review: German loop specialist Shed is a perfect match for the expertly designed breakbeats of Munich's finest, Ilian Tape, so we're delighted to see this one happen. His 'Applications' EP is bulky and brilliant from the off: 'EMCZ' is all skittish hits and dusty drums barrelling along with speed and energy. 'TLSQ' is doused in dub chord work and has a warming glow as the weight basslines roll on and the drums hit hard. Last but not least is 'UFO2' which is more menacing, with darker atmospheres and prying synth lines paired with physical and forceful kick patterns.

Netty Hugo - "Ecxtrem" (5:33)
Review: Planet Rhythm's brand of techno is utterly timeless and always futuristic. The latest trip around the stars is a various artists EP that varies in mood and tempo. Shekon's 'Hypno' (Phara remix) kicks off with big, boisterous drum loops full of bounce and swirled with coarse synths. Gotshell takes a more deep approach with gurgling basslines making for a subterranean sound on 'Sindrome De Volar.' KaioBarssalos's 'Detroit' then taps into a classic 313 techno style with shimmering pads and earth-shattering drums. Netty Hugo's 'Ecxtrem' is a pulsating cosmic closer.

Review: Raw and its many different sub and sister labels had always worn its love for Chicago house and Detroit techno proudly on its sleeve. This series is specifically dedicated to that and now finds Signal to Noise Ratio serving up the Detroit Is Burning EP. 'Collision' (A Rage In Brooklyn mix) opens up with glitchy electronics and scuzzy basslines over raw house beats. 'Rave Signal (A Rage In Eindhoven mix)' is all caustic synths and shiny metallic drums thudding away over a dark bassline and the title cut then evokes the sounds of aliens trapped in a machine and keen to get out. Closer 'Hypnomatic' is a more heady and dubby cut with pulsing synth tones and a busy bassline bringing the funk.

This four-track collection is an adventurous exploration of acid-infused rhythms that will bang on any dance floor whether a calmer back room or a more lively main room. The standout track for us is 'Multiharmony (Satyr mix)' which features soothing pads paired with lively drum machine patterns, while the title track 'Droopy (Terrestrial Ultra-Doula Mix)' blends dreamy elements with energetic rave breaks. Ostling expertly navigates the realms of rave, IDM, and techno here as he crafts lush yet fidgety beats that demonstrate his unique alchemical approach.

Dub Theory IV (5:15)
Review: Simoncino is like a direct link to the earliest roots of deep house. His sounds are coated in tones of tape hiss, dustiness from his analogue machines, and dreamy synth work that speaks of his Italia heritage. This newest EP is another class outing on Quintessentials that finds him leaning into dub. 'Dub Theory I' is mid-tempo but with nice drive, 'Dub Theory II' has more thunder in the claps and darkness in the bass. 'Dub Theory III' brings shards of melodic light that cut through the muggy atmospheres and 'Dub Theory IV' is a nice Maurizio-style techno roller for early evening or the dead of night.

Far From The Madding (4:31)
Overcircle (4:49)
Review: Mitsubasa means "three-wings" in Japanese and those wings stand for the soul, the heart and the mind. All of them are taken care of with this new one from the label as SLV taps into Detroit techno heat on the opener. It's awash with textural synths and speedy drum funk. 'Do High' drops in a pitched-up vocal hook that cannot fail to get that extra bit of real iron in the club, especially as the drums surge with such style and euphoria. 'Far From The Madding' is another one wrapped up in synth overloads that build intensely over minimal drums and 'Overcircle' then strips things back to tight, bouncy loops.

Review: Smooth & Simmonds was Chris Simmonds and Ron Wells, a pair pf producers who were active from the early to mid-90s and made just a handful of EPs that have all stood the test of time. Three of the best of them have been newly remeasured by a long-time fan at the Pariter label and are now getting served up on fresh wax. This 12" features 90s EP, The Four Seasons, with two mixes of the title cut. The first is a steamy Warehouse Mix with dusty drums, subtle rave whistles and seductive vocals stitched in, while the second is a Factory Mix that rides a little more smoothly on uplifting chord work and brighter synth energy.

Review: SND & RTN brings it home on this new 12" for Lempuyang that explores their signature techno depths. 'Palantir' opens with fathoms-deep dub and ice-cold synths that snake their way over the face of the track, while 'Hyperdrive' has rumbling chords and smeared pads that keep you on the ocean floor and 'Dub Conjurer' allows in a little more light from the surface with delicate shards piercing the murk. 'Tales From The Outer Rim' shuts down with a nice gentle rhythm that undulates beneath rippling pad work and works well as perfect early evening warm up.

Review: Sound Synthesis is back on his own new young label Subversive Underground with more atmospheric techno. This is warm, analogue driven tackle for sophisticated floors with opener 'We Are Still Here' sinking you into a world of celestial pads, aqueous chords and dubby, high speed drums. 'Sonic Transmissions' brings more texture to the fore with an edgy sustained synth line and metallic percussion and 'The Untold Story' then hits hard with stumbling kicks and tense pads keeping you on edge. Review: The third Trip release features extended acid narratives from SOUR, the mastermind behind Florence's Warehouse303 club. The producer invites you into his hard-hitting and 90s-referencing acid odyssey from the off, with 'Six Times Three' weaving intricate basslines, deep distortions, and mesmerising synths into something that hammers home the groove but is never austere. After that dancefloor delight, "Mainframe' delves deeper into trippy realms with more warped acid, subdued rhythms and fizzing synth textures. It's a superb exercise in making a maximal impact from minimal elements and is one that we thoroughly recommend.
