Review: Produced using nothing but vintage analog equipment - Roland Space Echo, Echoplex, Korg tape delay, vintage signal processors, noise generators, Sequential Circuits 8 bit samplers and numerous analog synthesizers - "The Coldest Season" project goes back to the heady days of Berlin-based proto dub/techno variations, recorded and produced in Detroit and Chicago. Three of the worlds most important Techno cities colliding to form a whole that perfectly bridges the gap between The Motor City's emotive arrangements, The Windy city's percussive robustness, and Berlin's life-altering Basic Channel continuum. Deep Chord brings an absolutely amazing release on Modern Love.

Review: Dub techno stalwarts Echospace are celebrating a decade as a duo this year. To mark the anniversary, they've decided to put out their first official live album. The show was recorded in May 2013 at Ghost In The Sound, Detroit, and sees Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell at their hazy, intoxicating best. It's pure hypnotic dub techno, laden with effects, white noise and manipulated field recordings. Unlike some of their epic sets, which revolve around subtle variations on the same theme, Ghost In The Sound sees them slowly move through the gears, delivering distinctive, dub-fuelled techno tracks that rise and fall in rhythmic and percussive intensity throughout.

Seven arresting, original new exercises from E-Saggila aka Canadian producer Rita Mikhael. She wears her love of dub on her sleeve - see the slow motion skank of 'Amnesiac' aming others - but not in the usual reassuring, bubbling echoes of dub techno, aiming for something much more angular and alarming. "Breaks remain staccato hammers," says the blurb, with maximum accuracy, "and kicks are cast to negate cardiac systems," while the rhythms veer from off kilter to nailed down and the sonics vary from the lush to the caustic. This territory to the left(field) of electronica is over saturated with identikit productions, but Mikhael does it like you've never quite heard before.

Review: Here, Beat Pharmacy man Brendon Moeller delivers his fourth full-length, his first since 2011. In typical fashion, there's a twisted, druggy intensity to the music, which flits between psychedelic electronica (see opener "The Frequency of Love" and vaguely tropical "Stepping Out"), tough, acid-tinged techno beatscapes ("Guilty Pleasure"), dub-influenced sludge (the excellent title track), and dubstep-influenced industrial spookiness ("Deep Fried"). For all the murkiness on display, there are moments of startling beauty and almost alarming clarity, with the samba shuffle and sun-flecked melodies of "Tricks of the Shade", and picturesque, humid "Lost" standing out.

Review: American ambient producer Michael Mantra sadly passed away a few years back, having played a vital role in the development of vibrational and sonic therapy. His theories hugely influenced Echospace duo Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell, who became close friends with Mantra during the final years of his life. Here they pay tribute to him, creating a piece in three parts inspired by his theories and production methods. It's an all-analogue, drone-influenced soundscape full of dubbed-out textures, meditative white noise and subtle melodic shifts, created in part by using a variety of obscure electronic instruments and experimental production techniques. Sea Shell City is a fitting tribute to Mantra's work, and one of Modell and Hitchell's finest ambient works.

Review: There are many ways to approach a FabricLive mix. Jimmy Edgar decided to focus largely on unreleased and forthcoming material from the Ultramajic label he founded with pal Arden back in 2013. In some ways, it's a smart move; although there's some fine deep house, Detroit techno and ghetto-house selections from other labels peppered throughout (including tracks from DJ Godfather, Patrice Scott and Terrence Dixon), it's the warehouse-friendly middle section - complete with Ultramajic exclusives from Crystal Bandito and Edgar himself (including a hook-up with DJ Rashad) - that really makes the mix. It's these inclusions - twisted, tough, wonky and rush inducing - that gives Edgar's mix a distinctive feel.

Review: You'll struggle to find another album opener that's quite as striking as "Oh, Lovely Appearance of Death", the stunning ambient-folk cut that kicks off Phillip Sollmann's first album as Efdemin for five years. It's utterly beguiling and features a traditional folk acapella over layers of hushed electronic chords. It sets the tone for an album in which Sollmann effortlessly saunters between atmospheric and droning dancefloor techno ("Good Winds", the 14-minute, Berghain-friendly "New Atlantis"), woozy experimental ambient works ("At The Stranger's House"), Jew's Harp-sporting club cuts ("A Land Unknown"), discordant free tech-jazz ("Temple") and the kind of hazy, traditional music-meets-electronica cuts that have previously been a hallmark of Firecracker's Mac-Talla Nan Creag ("The Sound House").

Review: Dial regular Efdemin returns with a third album of a respected career, with the autumnal theme of Decay inspired by the German producer's three-month artist residency in Kyoto, Japan. Sollmann immersed himself in the local culture while in Kyoto, attending ceremonies with monks at temples and visiting local instrument makers. This results in a ten track set that canvasses the sort of poignant, introverted house music that's characterised much of Phillip Sollmann's work as Efdemin to date. There are however a few stylistic surprises along the way - the stripped back, jacking "Transducer" or the fusion of jazzy licks and noisy bursts of percussion that makes up the title track - but overall you'd be hard pushed to think of a better label to house Decay than Dial.

Review: With Naif, veteran German producer Efdemin has become the latest producer to release a set that gleefully blurs the boundaries between an original album and a DJ mix. You see, Naif not only includes 10 previously unheard solo tracks and collaborations from the man himself, but also 19 unreleased exclusives from friends and associates, including Margaret Dygas, Steve Bicknell, Tobias and Gunnar Haslam. As you might expect, it's a fast-paced and thrill-packed journey, with Efdemin sashaying between trippy ambient cuts before working his way through an impressively atmospheric and occasionally forthright selection of club-ready techno cuts. These naturally vary in style and intensity, from forthright percussive intensity and early morning creepiness, to gently melodious workouts, bleep-rich shufflers and far-sighted techno futurism.

Lism
Review: LISm, Ellen Allien's seventh full-length, is a curious beast. Co-produced by fellow Berlin producer Bruno Pronsato, it takes the form of a single, 45-minute track and is apparently based on the soundtrack she wrote with Thomas Mulker for the Drama per Musicadance performance at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, in 2011. The 30-second clip available here doesn't do the undulating music justice; in the space of 45 minutes, it groggily stumbles between crystalline electronica, horror-inspired moodiness, droning ambience, neo-classic piano compositions and half-vocal oddness. As atmospheric as an off-kilter soundtrack should be, it's Allien's most interesting and involving work for some time.

Review: Ellen's third studio album follows hot on the heels of the pre album taster 'Magma' and we dare say is even bigger than the mighty 'Berlinette'. Co-produced with Smash TV's Holger Zielske (her partner on the previous albums 'Stadtkind' and 'Berlinette') 'Thrills' sees Ellen combining some newfound vintage synth gear with more modern electronics that give these tracks a more devastating dancefloor punch than ever before, coupled with her trademark vocals and bass, bass everywhere. Techno has been redefined!

Review: There's a decidedly rushing, saucer-eyed feel to Ellen Allien's latest album, her eighth since launching the BPitch Control label at the dawn of the century. The Berlin veteran shows no desire to soften her sound or move away from the dancefloor, delivering an eight-track set that giddily charges between neo-trance (the loved-up "Empathy" and tech-trance throb-job "Free Society"), post-dubstep electro (the swirling "MDMA" and atmospheric "Exit To Humanity"), raging acid ("Bowie In Harmony"), decidedly muscular techno (the arpeggio-driven heaviness of acid fired smasher "Love Distortion" and the creepier "Electronic Joy") and bubbly acid electro (superb closing cut "Stimulation").
