Review: This reissue of the 1981 self-titled album from the cult Japanese duo Colored Music is now made available on vinyl for the first time since its original release. This groundbreaking mix of cosmic new wave, avant-garde synth-pop, experimental funk and unconventional disco is wonderfully unique and is reminiscent of David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy with a psychedelic Haruomi Hosono touch. Featuring celebrated musicians like Mansaku Kimura and Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, Colored Music delivers an unparalleled, otherworldly soundscape that belies it ages.

Review: Onsen Music isn't just the title of Shoko Igarashi's second album, but rather a manifesto of sorts. The name refers to a "genre" of music the saxophonist, flautist, and vocalist has created. A strange, bouncy-yet-angular corner of the electronic music universe that feels like it's inviting you to a party thrown by Mr Soft and a flying unicorn. Sounds extend themselves, curve, wobble, warp, float, glitter, and do everything else in their power to make sure you know this is a safe listening space that's equally danceable. Ever bubbly and colourful, 'Rainy' represents the full blown nu disco end of the record's vast spectrum, while the likes of 'Ukigusa' come over far closer to Ryuichi Sakamoto's clean, crisp and cuddly pop excursions - staunchly leftfield and out there, but strangely familiar and universally likeable.

Review: Marewrew, a female vocal group specialising in traditional Ainu songs, takes centre stage in Pingipung's exploration of the music of northern Japan's long-suppressed people. Produced by Oki Kano, who is known for his work with Ainu artists, Marewrew's a cappella renditions offer a fresh perspective on these age-old tunes. With voices familiar from their backing vocals for Umeko Ando, Marewrew's harmonious canons create captivating, trance-like experiences. Nature's whispers and birdcalls add depth, while tracks like 'Little Sea God' weave hypnotic tales. The album, Ukouk, curated by Andi Otto, showcases Marewrew's enchanting melodies, including unexpected cumbia and pop-inspired moments, accompanied by percussion and the Tonkori harp.
