Review: Yorkshire cult icons New Model Army were never ones to shy away from heavy themes. The Bradford rockers had a knack for poetic depictions of war that few possess: "They hardly know their sacred mother tongue but they know their duty/To defend the flag hanging limp and bloody above the village church," is sung on 'Here Comes The War'. When they first released this cracking guitar-driven album via Epic in 1993, they probably hoped the words to this single wouldn't be just as relevant now as they were then, but with wars raging it's sadly the case. New Model Army were mavericks in their day and sticking to their guns as opposed to bending to the whims of fashion has made them more enduring than they would possibly have been otherwise. A truly legendary band deserving of all the plaudits they can get.

Review: In a smooth flying saucered descent, Solara Melfera continues the WSNWG: Back to Zero journey, adding a new dimension to the label's evolving sound. This compilation unites eight carefully selected tracks curated by German producer and DJ Rodhad, fusing nighttime prowler moods and subtle celestials. With a cover artwork bathed in golden, sunlit tones, the music has an eclipsing mood, juggling strong shades of light and dark. Kicking off with Ignez' 'Passion Overdrive', we're met with a brooding techno number with overdubbed lyrics by the artist, recounting the artist's rather libidinally charged dream from the previous night.

Review: Amsterdam's Bordello a Parigi's ongoing Diamonds In The Night series has not only proved to be a reliable source of new - if authentically old sounding - Italo-disco, Hi-NRG and proto-Eurodance, but also a brilliant platform for new and up-and-coming artists. Volume seven in the series is another strong offering. It begins with the tops-off, melody-driven Hi-NRG joy of Tallac's 'Chemtrail Surfers' and concludes with the vocoder-heavy early morning dark bew wavce disco of 'Disco Homicide' by Hypersensitive. Sandwiched in between you'll find the tough, throbbing, strobe-lit and sweat-soaked hedonism of Luksek's 'Tropicale' and the Bobby Orlando and early Pet Shop Boys influenced excellence of 'That Moment' by Francesco Cascella.

Notes: Bartender is the centerpiece of the mixer system. Four stereo channels, with two stereo aux send and two stereo returns. Each channel can be used in a mono mode where both channels are mixed. If you want to do eight channels of mono, you can put the channels in stereo mode (I know it feels backwards) and then use the pan control to control the crossfade between each channel, and then take the mono output. There is a built in cueing system so you can monitor channels in your headphones and control the blend with the main output. You can expand a Bartender with both a Barback and/or another Bartender. When connecting two Bartenders, the main level control on the 'expander' Bartender acts as a group control.

Review: This newly formed and already brilliant label is back with more previously unreleased instrumentals that bring a different twist and dancefloor edge to classic sounds from the rock and indie world. First up we get a subtle edit of 'Sound and Vision' which has a nice fat and funky bassline bouncing beneath the splashy drums as nice acoustic guitar melodies ring out next to glistening retro-future pads. It's a cosmic trip that oozes soul then things slow down on the flip with 'Young Americans'. This one is a nice go-slow instrumental with funky and expressive horn work taking the lead over the fat-bottomed drums and bass.

Review: Detroit dub techno don Luke Hess says that this is his "most eclectic and techno-driven album to date" and that it blends together his signature subterranean sounds with his indelible Motor City touch. It again works well on cultured dance floors but is also a deeply spiritual album that will have your mind wandering to some lovely places. From the opening moments of 'Dokimion' you're sunk into widescreen soundscapes that pair painterly synths with immersive low ends. Cuts like 'Stoicheo' bring serene melodies and closer 'Hiketeria' is a misty, foggy cut that oozes late-night intimacy.

Pico DSP is a small brother of the popular stereo effects processor Black Hole DSP. It contains eight algorithms, in detail four delays, two types of reverb, Leslie speaker emulation and an Overdrive/Bitcrusher. Each effect is editable in two parameters. One of them can be modulated using the CV input. Pico DSP features clear, high-resolution sound. Alongside the established standards, it is also possible to generate lots of freaky special effects.

Review: Finland's Common Labour label unites four different producers on the fourth volume of its Odd Jobs series, and each of them goes deep in their own inimitable way. Omar Santis begins with an unhuried and smoky dubbed out house with wispy pads and subtle vocals on 'Pinoki.' Flabaire ups the energy with some slick, tightly programmed but smooth drum loops that bounce freely beneath warm pads which infuse the mix with soul. Thomas Wood's 'All It Takes' has molten bass and liquid synths for a dub house delight on 'All It Takes' and Potholes's 'Bromsman' is the headiest of the lot with DJ Koze-style melodic whimsy.

Review: Dr. Dre's The Chronic gave rise to such heavy-hitters as 'Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang' and 'Let Me Ride', but what about its many "reimaginings" over the years? With The Ghronic, released in 2023, West Coast rappers 38 Spesh and Conway The Machine can't be said to have laid down their own version more so than they did treat the Dre touchstone as a starting point, dropping a nine-track array of similar G-funk whistling lowrider bumps, readapted for the contemporary New Yorker, and yet with fresh lyrical themes and subject matters. Reissued two years later on green vinyl, after an initially white-sleeved run, the productions are ever clean and the flows lackadaisical. Features from Lloyd Banks, Che Noir, Benny The Butcher and Elcamino cement the bluffing rep of a brag-heavy machine duopoly.

Review: Buddy Holly defied rock star stereotypes with his Ivy League style and horn-rimmed glasses, yet his impact on music rivals legends like Elvis and Little Richard. This 20-track collection celebrates the legacy of Holly and The Crickets and takes in many of their most iconic hits like 'That'll Be the Day' and other gems released under his various different monikers. Despite his tragic death in 1959, Holly's brief yet brilliant career left an indelible mark on rock 'n' roll after he emerged by mixing up Texas country roots with r&b influences with great guided by producer Norman Petty. Holly's sound was both fresh and timeless, and this album proves what a pioneer he was.

Inspired by a trip to Berlin's trailblazing music hardware trade show Superbooth, Coldcut's Matt Black and longtime friend Dr Walker (Liquid Sky artist collective / Air Liquide) envisaged the exciting possibilities of a custom hardware effects unit. The result is the creation of the Zen Delay i the first-ever hardware effects unit produced in collaboration with an electronic music label.

Bringing together the best of the digital and analogue worlds, the Zen Delay is a BPM-synced stereo delay line, combining extreme feedback ranges for dub and experimental lo-fi effects with a multi-mode 24 dB synth filter and valve overdrive.

Created and manufactured by Erica Synths, the unit is housed in a metal case with Erica Synths' signature bakelite knobs and a valve circuit for extra analogue warmth. While sonically versatile, it is incredibly easy to use each function has a physical knob that you can play around with without diving into manuals or scrolling through menus on a tiny screen.

By lowering the aluminium body around the keyboard, the new OP-1 field feels lighter, thinner and more precise. with 2k moulding Teenage Engineering have also managed to fit a dual 2.4 GHz antenna system inside the aluminium body.

The back is warm, velcro and bass.

Two soft velcro rings have been added on the back for fastening covers and accessories. Perhaps you want to stick your op-1 field on top of your full size keyboard, or slap it on a guitar? Use the included adhesive looped back and start experimenting. On the right you'll find an additional passive loudspeaker for hugely improved bass. And for a 'no-more-cold-metal-on-your-lap' experience, the aluminium body has been folded in a warm, soft touch, hard cover.

The first accessory out using the velcro rings is the Bill Amberg leather wrap that attaches to the back and wraps around the op-1 field and locks around the encoders.

Review: Sinsuke Fujieda's latest release on SoFa Records is a stunning new entry in the world of Japanese modal and spiritual jazz featuring five original compositions. This live-recorded album pairs Fujieda's emotive saxophone with Fumiko Takeshita's expressive violin and HAL-Oh Togashi's masterful piano work and the resulting sounds transcend jazz traditions. It evokes vivid imagery and deep emotion, especially on 'Fukushima,' a tender tribute to the 2011 earthquake's impact. With its raw yet refined energy, this beautifully pressed Japanese vinyl release from Superfly Records and Production Dessinee captures both the healing spirit and exploratory nature of contemporary Japanese jazz. A moving listen.

Review: Swedish producers Alexander Johansson & Mattias Fridell get back to the drafting board - Blueprint Records - for a third release, following their 2023 EP 'Geometriska Strukturer' and the 'Marvatten' EP the year before. Active collaborators since the early 2000s, the pair have steadily contributed their precision-honed techno to labels such as Symbolism, Audio Assault, ARMS, XXX Records and H. Productions, alongside their own imprint, Lomsk, since 2022. Their latest 'Bentik Zone' comprises three hot, mode-choked techno tesla coils, themed after the topical Benthic zone: the lowest level of a body of water such as an ocean, lake or stream, where deep-sea crustacean dwellers known as benthos lurk.

Review: After a remarkable project launch last year - the red ribbon cutter DJ Friction Presents Ground Control for Sedsoul - DJ Friction now lifts the lid on his new label Soulsonic, with the aid of soul companions Soulkitchen, cracking the safe with a vibrant 7” single ahead of his second full-length. ‘Step Into The Light’ is a vimmy slice of funk-disco, with powerhouse vocals from David Whitley on the A, whose body-power could only manifest in counterpart to a stripped back B on the flip. The track’s gospel inflections recall the electrified optimism of early 80s dance music, thought it also grafts on robo handclaps and tight modern production.
