Review: Despite being born and raised in Detroit, Luke Hess is rarely mentioned in the same breath as his Motor City peers. Then again, his brand and dub-infused techno doesn't fit neatly into the futurist narrative. This latest full-length flips the script slightly. While it has plenty of dub-flecked moments (see "Overcome" and "Humility"), there's a greater reliance on melody over mood. While this could be a reflection of the involvement of collaborator Omar-S, it's more likely an indication of Hess's development as a producer. Moving from hypnotic deep house to robust techno via beatless interludes, Keep On is Hess's most accessible set to date.

Techno
  1. Emerald (6:28)
  2. Lumen (6:50)
  3. Myriads (6:46)
Review: There are few surprises on Luke Hess's latest vinyl outing on Echochord's colour series, just a trio of fluttering, tried-and-tested techno workouts. Opener "Emerald" boasts a typically trippy and hypnotic groove, but also some heart-aching chord progressions and suitably melancholic melody lines. The late night hypnotism is also present on the slightly more boisterous "Lumen", in which the producer fires darting synthesizer lines and cyclical melody loops at a locked-in groove. In a possible bid to impress those who like their techno funkier and more forthright, he reaches for the foreboding acid lines and pounding kick-drums on cymbal-heavy closer "Myriads".

  4. Michael Zucker - "YHWH" (6:15)
Review: Finale Sessions continues to fly the flag for the freshest variations on deep techno with a distinct Detroit flavour, and now the label is celebrating five years of operations with a split release that calls upon some label regulars to turn out the goods. Luke Hess is up first with the dynamic whipcrack dub techno pulse of "Deliverer", while Patrice Scott continues his fine run of form with the meditative "Future Funk". Basic Soul Unit meanwhile strikes the balance between experimentation and immersion with the sharp-angled yet soothing "Torn Satin", and then label boss Michael Zucker drops a punchy but poignant offering in the shape of "YHWH".

Review: Jaunt celebrates a decade in the game this year, with the British clubbing institution marking the milestone in typically esteemed fashion. 10 Years of Jaunt - Sea, Land, Air is a 12 track V/A compilation spread across three distinct vinyl discs, each of which is based around some of the world's core elements; themselves a mode of transport or a manner to embark on a 'jaunt'. Each featured artist is somebody who the label has forged a connection with at some stage during their ten year journey - and each track has been titled to the artist's own interpretation of a 'jaunt'. The tracklisting itself has been tailor made to build and develop like their a Jaunt event, with deep, hypnotic, up tempo strands included alongside numerous surprises along the way.A

Deep House
  1. Steve Tang - "Immense"
  2. XDB - "Pelago"
  3. Luke Hess - "Suplication"
Review: In its lifetime Finale Sessions have seen releases from the likes of Fred P, Innerspace Halflife and Amir Alexander, and the label's latest 12", Finale Undergound Vol 1, sees three similarly respected artists come together on one EP for some properly deep moves. Steven Tang delivers the suitably titled "Immense", a moody slice of house percussion positively swimming in Tang's trademark pads, while Metrolux boss XDB joins him on the A-side for some weighty yet refined house music, pairing abstract tones with some submerged bassline swing unfolding out into some heavily delayed, oven warm chords. FXHE associate Luke Hess finishes up with "Suplication"; though it shares the same dubby qualities as the rest it's the most impressively driving track of the three, combining Motor City dynamism with Chicago's breezy house.
