Review: Ever since they formed in the wake of the break-up of Godflesh in 2004, Justin Broadrick's Jesu outfit has offered up albums that defy easy categorization. While his roots lie in particularly heavy and intense metal - he was once a member of Napalm Death - Broadrick has used Jesu's album to blur the boundaries between post-metal, post-rock, shoegaze, ambient and drone. Never, the outfit's new album, continues this theme, offering a musical journey awash with backwards vocals and guitars, droning shoegaze sounds, noise-seeped aural textures, disconnected vocals, off-kilter contemporary dream pop tropes (see 'Never There For You'), sparse and gentle beats, and audible production ticks more often found in experimental electronica.
