Jolene (3:58)
Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Bloodline (3:52)
Review: A new four-track EP reflecting ever-expanded horizons for the band, 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations. Capped by frontman Lusk's voice - a weapon that swoops through the octaves breathlessly - Gabriels have that rare ability to make you re-evaluate music, and what it can do, in a heartbeat. Whilst Lusk provides the wow factor with that ridiculous larynx, Gabriels are very much a close-knit trio. Producer, keyboardist (and full-time video director) Ryan Hope hails from Sunderland but calls LA home. Fellow producer-composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, a man with endless musical projects on the go at any one time, gives Gabriels' songs a real 'feel' to them. Sultry, soulful mood music certainly isn't the band's modus operandi, but this new experimental EP should paint an altogether more rounded idea of where Gabriels are at today.

Review: Impossibly powerful and soul fuelled sounds from Gabriels, who have headlined a fine list of all the major musi events, not least Glastonbury with a stirring performance that took them to all new levels. 'Love & Hate In a Different Time' is their most hard hitting tune but still comes with plenty of sweetness and sits at the centre of this 12" of the same name with an alternate version also included next to dusty and lo-fi soul gut wrenchers like 'The Blind' and the intimate vocals, swooning strings and finger clicks of 'In Loving Memory.'

Just Another Rainbow (5:34)
Review: Two of the likeliest lads from Manchester team up for the first day release of their new collaborative project. And its something of a full circle moment, with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher previously citing Stone Roses hero John Squire in a list of formative teenage musical inspirations, who, in turn, first encountered the former when both bands were working the same studio, respectively recording Definitely Maybe and The Second Coming. The pair first shared honours three years after that, co-writing 'Love Me & Leave Me' for Squire's relatively short-lived outfit, The Seahorses, in 1997. Skip forward to 2022 and Squire joined the Gallaghers et al on stage at Knebworth, reprising his appearances for renditions of 'Champagne Supernova' at the band's 1996 shows, spurring the idea to do something together again. Here's the result - and it's precisely what the duo should sound like together.

Karate (2:27)
Review: Cult outfit The General Store laid down four songs in the year of 1967. They release two of them, but the other two have remained under wraps ever since. Now, more than half a century later, they are getting pressed up to vinyl for the first time thanks to Perfect Toy who have decided to cut just 300 copies. The band themselves have given full blessing for this one and as soon as the needle drops you're taken into a swirling, high-octane world of raw 60s rock heavy funk. It is very much a case of Tower of Power meets Funkadelic with a lo-fi twist.

Love Is You (2:34)
Without Her (3:23)
Review: You're unlikely to find much information about The General Store online. Clearly back in the 1960s they weren't coming up with band names that took Google searchability into account. Belonging to a different age, they made music that sounds like heart, soul, unity and good times all rolled into one, even when dealing with less rose-tinted issues. Say what you will about being able to find anything you want in a couple of clicks, right now we feel the world could do with a lot more of their sound. Love Is You can be traced by to 1967, and the very early beginnings of psychedelic funk and garage rock. Recorded in 1967, this four-track 7" is harder to track down than information about the group themselves. Or at least it was until now. Finally reissued, this is collector's stuff for sure.

Review: Phantomimea arrives through Loma Vista Recordings and is a brilliant new five-track cover EP from Ghost. Each and every tune is epic in its own way with material by Television, Genesis, The Stranglers, Iron Maiden and Tina Turner all chewed up and sat out in their own inimitable way. Though some of these sources are rather unlikely given Ghost's style they are all reworked with great respect. Ghost is in a great run of form having just won Best Rock Album of the Year at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, which itself came off last year's international chart-topping success Impera.

We Don't Need Another Hero (4:08)
Review: A fresh, rare EP by Swedish rock band Ghost; Phantomime is an impressive side-stint for the band, its gimmick being five covers of standards by other prominent groups throughout the rock continuum. Flaunting their impressive and eclectic tastes, the EP contains covers of Television's 'See No Evil', Genesis' 'Jesus He Knows Me', The Stranglers' 'Hanging Around', Maiden's 'Phantom Of The Opera' and, yes, Tina Turner's 'We Don't Need Another Hero'. A fan service for the band's devilishly cultish followers, we're sure this'll successfully function as both a history lesson and fan initiation ritual.

Issac Hayes (2:48)
Review: Karma Chief takes strict instructions from Ghost Funk Orchestra here to 'Walk Like A Motherfucker'. It is a single taken originally from their 2019 album A Song For Paul which was written, arranged, and performed by Seth Applebaum with plenty of sidemen on cello, violin, trombone and trumpet all making it a fulsome and raw funk sound. The vocals are coated in sleazy reverb to add some menace to the sensuality of the tones and on the flip is 'Issac Hayes', another reverb heavy funk chaser.

Review: Italian producer Vinz Giaimis crafts an intricate homage to the kosmische traditions of Krautrock, weaving a sonic tapestry that feels as much about exploration as it does about reverence. Across the EP's four tracks, Giaimis deftly balances vintage analogue textures with a modern electronic sensibility. The opener sets the tone with a motorik groove underpinned by shimmering synths, evoking both the vastness of space and the hypnotic rhythms of a train journey. Elsewhere, there's a palpable warmth as swirling pads and layered percussion come together in a way that suggests the meditative qualities of early Tangerine Dream.

Review: Gipsy Power Band - what a name that is, by the way - debuts with aplomb here and mixes up a fiery sonic stew of flamenco rumba, rock and funk that captures the essence of a unique time in Spanish music. Formed in Madrid in 2022, the band originally paid tribute to "cine quinqui," a Spanish exploitation film genre, by performing tracks from its iconic soundtracks and other hidden gems from the mid-70s to early 80s. Drawing inspiration from artists like Los Chichos and Las Grecas, they lit up Madrid's stages with their vintage repertoire. Now, they've evolved to create original music and it comes in the form of these two songs.

Bloom (2:17)
Floating (3:15)

Heavenly (2:51)
Ghastly (2:22)
Review: Texan shoegaze arrivistes, Glare, share 'Heavenly'; the band's first proper EP-length release, it hotly follows their two drumroller single releases 'Into You' and 'Void In Blue', both released earlier in the year (yet they do not feature here). The EP hears Heavenly hone the best qualities of their sound so far, delivering a fiver of cataleptic overloads, and bottling a normally immiscible range of emotions - "love, loneliness, and anger" - where only the sonic medium of heavy-set rock gushes, and the act of averting one's gaze to the trodden, spirit-sodden floor, can succeed in integrating them. The EP's momentous shreds and viscid vocals are at times too much to muster for us sensitive types; we note the contrast of 'Bloom', 'Floating', 'Soft', 'Heavenly' with the closer 'Ghastly', a shocking tonal shift compared to the first four songs, its amped discordancy and snarled pickup grrs making it the standout of the bunch, yet also the most horrific; a well and truly drowned sorrow.

This debut on Research Record is a stunning one from the enigmatic producer but will have you googling t find out as much as you can while you get lost in the sliding bass and transcendent synthwork. It's tinged with a certain retro charm and 70s prog magic but also feels decidedly new and fresh. Masterful.

Review: Mahal by Glass Beams melds a diverse array of influences into a unique and enchanting soundscape. The Melbourne-based trio, shrouded in mystery with their mask-wearing anonymity, lets their music speak volumes. Built around founding member Ranjan Silva, their sound draws from the rich heritage of Ravi Shankar, Bollywood, Electric Light Orchestra, and traditional blues.Inspired by repeated viewings of 'The Concert For George', Silva's vision for Glass Beams seems to echo the fusion George Harrison envisioned when introducing classical Indian music to Western pop. The EP opens with 'Horizon,' setting a serene tone before leading into the title track 'Mahal,' an instrumental piece that envelops the listener in its mystical charm. 'Orb' follows with a riveting bass riff, while 'Snake Oil' delves deeper into Indian classical territory, showcasing evocative vocals. The EP concludes with 'Black Sand,' a dramatic and beautiful track featuring interwoven vocals and guitar. As their second EP, following Mirage, Mahal solidifies Glass Beams' distinct place in music, defying categorisation and quietly demanding attention with its almost otherworldly quality.

Following in the footsteps of Coldplay, Keane et al, these lads from Manchester have a sound which is made for radio play and massive stages - they're destined to be huge. Following up their Second Time single for Ra-Ra-Rok Records, they're back with this new song which plays out like a rallying call for unity in a distinctly un-united world. 'Everybody In The UK' has soaring choruses and a bright, hopeful sound which will surely send the band further down the road to stardom.

Review: Omena once again calls on the superb sounds of Golden Retriever for this adventurous new EP that very much takes you away from the here and now and deposits you somewhere warmer. 'Part Lake' opens up with the joys of a spring day - acoustic strings rippling out as sun beams down. 'Andro Dunos' slows to a crawl and has a more star-gazing feel while 'Digambara' is a gentle rhythm that casts you out to sea. Two variations of 'Modulations' allows you to get lost in some lush synth tapestries and 'Kizuna Encounter' then ends with another lovely sonic day dream that empties your mind.

Review: Big guitars playing huge hooks at a propellant pace. The Goods deliver their debut EP, which looks to decades worth of garage rock and pop punk heritage for influence, while ensuring the finished tracks are every bit theirs. Retro revivalism this isn't, a veteran singer-songwriter known for sharp lines drafting seasoned talent from his local music scene in order to make something new, this most definitely is. Headed up by Rob Good, a well-known figure in the underground Oakland guitar scene, California, for the three tracks here - and this project - he's called upon rhythm section and human drum machine Paul Wiseman and highly respected session bassist Cherron Arena. The result is an EP that's personal and passionate, and incredibly thoughtful, while also compelling and high octane. A refreshing indie whirlwind.

Goose, for example - the Connecticut indie folkers with a penchant for jammy freakouts - have unveiled the Undecided EP, a four-track studio collection of live favorites. The album tends towards the instrumental side of things, with climaxes emerging out of minimal slow jams, culminating in great brown washes of guitar and sumptuous, melodious crooning. Or honking, if you will; emotive and cathartic stuff.

Featuring Liam Grant on guitar, Grayson McGuire on fiddle and Devon Flaherty on banjo and guitar, this debut recording brims with raw, authentic talent. It was recorded straight to cassette with no overdubs and despite the carefree atmosphere, the trio expertly channels the spirit of old-time music. Review: Peter Gabriel's third self-titled album, often referred to as Melt, marks a significant artistic leap for the musician. Released in 1980, this groundbreaking record is notable for its innovative integration of electronic effects and the revolutionary gated drum sound developed with Phil Collins and engineer Hugh Padgham. The album's cover art, a melting portrait of Gabriel by Hipgnosis, adds to its striking visual identity. Co-produced by Gabriel and Steve Lillywhite, Melt showcases a unique blend of influences, notably African rhythms and experimental soundscapes. Opening with the eerie 'Intruder', the album establishes a dark and unsettling atmosphere that persists throughout. Tracks like 'No Self Control' and 'I Don't Remember' feature dynamic arrangements, with the latter providing one of the album's most memorable hooks. The politically charged 'Biko' serves as a poignant anthem for anti-apartheid activism, encapsulating Gabriel's deep engagement with global issues. Not only did the album achieve commercial success, topping charts in the UK, but it also solidified Gabriel's identity as a solo artist, paving the way for future explorations in music technology. This reissue on 180-gram vinyl brings the album's rich textures and intricate sound design back to life, allowing listeners to experience its emotional depth and musical innovation anew. Melt remains a powerful example to Gabriel's vision and a landmark in progressive music.

Review: Peter Gabriel's return to the limelight is demarcated by i/o, the latest 12-track album on which he reasserts his voice and compositional skill, delivering a profound and life-affirming new message. Embracing a Wattsian speck-of-dust existential theme, lead cuts like the title track turn the thought of "I'm just a part of everything" into a motif, while also touching on themes of injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. But While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope, topped off as it is, by the rousingly optimistic closing song, 'Live and Let Live'. Note that this is the Bright Side Mix of the album: i/o is not simply a collection of a dozen songs. All 12 tracks are subject to two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix, handled by Mark 'Spike' Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix, as reshaped by Tchad Blake; an embrace of today's ambivalent mood.

Review: In many ways the critical reception to Dave Gahan's debut solo outing is still surprising. Mainly because a good number of critics seemed surprised at the depth and assurance of the record, which kind of seems to deny the fact this is the voice of Depeche Mode, arguably one of the finest bands to ever come out of the UK and certainly a group that understand what it means to layer musical textures and meld multiple themes.

'Stay' might be the best case in point. It's patient, it's elegant, there's a real air of sorrow but also you can't help feeling loved while listening to it. Balladry in the truest sense, the fact that track is sandwiched between the soft half-house music of 'I Need You' and the epic, theatrical anthem 'Black & Blue Again' is a case in point. A real journey.

Review: Belgian-Moroccan singer Aicha Haskal is at the heart of this fabulous project which sees her joining creative forces with super-talented musicians from the Belgian scene. Between them, the group has a mad diverse spread of backgrounds and influences which means their music too is broad in scope - psychedelic sounds and funky grooves, Arabic melodies and European rhythms all feature in this album as do rap and parlando. Egyptian poet Abdelhamid Farag penned their first single 'Ghalat' and now this album expands around that with music that fights the oppression of women and fights for revolution.

Review: Medway's garage rock king Allan Crockford has credits flittering all the way back to the 80's including the likes of The Prisoners, Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats, The Solarflares, and even the OG line-up of the James Taylor Quartet, to name but a handful. Keeping sharp and busy, however, The Galileo 7 serves as his own passion project; melding 60s mod-beat garage rock with jangling psychedelic pop, leading to a sonic bickering between anthemic hooks and fuzzed out, twinkling guitar lines. Following two exceptional full-lengths released through Damaged Goods; 2017's Tear Your Minds Wide Open! and 2019's There Is Only Now, the collective return after a half-decade of respite to deliver another batch of lysergic, hazy power pop goodness, intended for the wannabe mod/hippie in all of us.

Review: There's almost no point writing about this one - an album that already has legions of disciples waiting to embrace it, with pretty much everyone who knows the names Liam Gallagher and John Squire guaranteed to be interested in what their self-titled LP is about. More so, without even hitting play we all kind of know what it's about, with two of the biggest names to come out of Manchester's 1990s indie rock breeding ground coming together for a record that sounds every bit the sum of its parts. Squire's incredible guitar playing - a centrepiece of The Stone Roses' sound - is incredible as ever, sending riffs soaring over the dilapidated rooftops of North West England and out into the stratosphere. Meanwhile, Gallagher's elongated but gruff vocal style remains steadfast across ten anthems-in-the-making. Powerhouse stuff, but like we said, nobody expected less.

Review: A stonking 23 tracks lifted from a famous live show in London makes up this mega-album-set, 'All Around Man', from Rory Gallagher, the Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his distinctive brand of blues-rock, and helming of the blues collective Taste. Charting the best examples of Gallagher's concerts across London throughout 1974 to 1976 - despite his underratedly moderate success in the UK - all show off Gallagher's virtuosic guitar playing, passionate vocals, and energetic stage presence, all of which translate just as well to vinyl as they do to his now irreplicable live experience.

Review: The 3LP version of BBC Collection highlights the Best of Rory Gallagher recorded concerts by the British public service broadcaster. Standouts include 'Cradle Rock' and 'Tattoo'd Lady' from 'Sounds of The Seventies' (1973), 'Shin Kicker' from 'BBC In Concert' (1979), and 'Continental Op' from the 1986 Paul Jones Blues Show. Each track exemplifies Gallagher's extraordinary guitar work and raw, powerful vocals. This collection not only spotlights Gallagher's enduring influence but also provides a journey through his evolving sound, from the gritty blues of his early days to the more refined, yet equally intense performances of the 80s. Many will say, Rory Gallagher's exceptional talent and his significant contribution to rock and blues music is most shown in his live performances. To many this is one of the most important collections of BBC recorded music. Certainly, the most extensive.

Recorded at Century Sound in Manhattan with Grammy-winning producer Brooks Arthur, the album's ethereal vocals and innovative production techniques - including the use of a Binson Echorec - set a mesmerising tone. With sitars, vibes, B3 organs, and harpsichord layered over minor guitar chords and bass drones, each track unfolds like a vivid journey through sonic landscapes. Released on clear vinyl and cut by Kevin Gray, this reissue invites listeners into a richly textured experience best enjoyed with eyes closed and the music turned up. Gandalf's album is a shinning example of timeless craftsmanship in psychedelic music, beckoning both old fans and new listeners alike to immerse themselves in its beauty and depth. Review: American rock band Garbage have done well to stand the test of time. Their seventh studio album has been influenced by numerology and things such as the seven virtues, the seven sorrows, and the seven deadly sins. It is a ferocious record that chews up and spits out issues of capitalism, love, loss and grief, and is, says frontwoman Shirley Manson, "our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in." Bold, confrontational and powerful, this is one of the band's most socially and politically aware albums.

Consisting of two heavyweight LPs, this anniversary edition helps us remember the band's innovative mix of electronica, grunge and new wave, as well as lead singer Shirley Manson's routine chronicling of the album's making on an online blog - making her one of the first high-profile musicians to do so. Featuring all the hits, including the trip-hoppy guitar headbanger 'Androgyny' and the Italo-grunge hilarity of 'Cherry Lips', this album isn't one to be forgotten.

Review: 90s indie bands don't come much more iconic than Garbage. They formed in 1993 and featured Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, Butch Vig and Shirley Manson. They went on to dominate the charts that decade with albums like their self-titled long player as well as Version 2.0. Now some of their best moments are all collected totters on this bumper anthology which comes as a double CD, or double gatefold yellow vinyl versions. It's got the tunes you love to sing back badly at the top of your voice as well as some other lesser-known ones. A great reminder of a great band.

Their second album came in 1998 and was a marked progression from their debut. It sold more than four million copies and was described at the time as "gloomy and sexual yet lively and introspective." It now gets a proper reissue on 2 x 12" double gatefold and is the first time the newly remastered record has been made available via BMG. Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, Butch Vig and Shirley Manson went on to sell more than 17 million records across the length of their careers and this album was a big step up from their debut. It is gloomy and introspective but also lively and seductive in its own bleak fashion. The dense tracks have plenty of gauzy guitars and impassioned lyrics that remain iconic to this day. This newly remastered version is the first one to be made available by BMG.

Review: Bleed Like Me was the hugely successful and critically acclaimed fourth studio album from Garbage. Originally released in 2005, the recording of the album had some ups and downs that included the band disbanding during recording and eventually cutting the subsequent tour short as well. Through all of that, the album reached number four on the top 200 Billboard chart which was higher than any of the previous more commercially successful albums. Although none of the songs were hits, the album sits very well with fans of the band. Nearly 20 years later, we finally get a vinyl version of the album! Spread across two lovely transparent red vinyl we get the Deluxe Version. Listen and enjoy one of the best rock bands of the past 30 years.

Review: Angelica Garcia's Gemelo is a bold exploration of grief and self-discovery, encapsulated in a vibrant tapestry of hybrid-pop sounds. The album delves into the complexities of grief, from its inherent loneliness to its eventual liberation, while also deconstructing universal themes like religion, heritage, and womanhood. As a reflection of modern America's cultural landscape, Gemelo marks Garcia's first album predominantly sung in Spanish, challenging traditional notions of what constitutes an American record. Produced by Carlos Arevalo of Chicano Batman, the album is meticulously sequenced, guiding listeners through a journey from delicate introspection to visceral intensity. Born in East LA with Mexican and Salvadoran roots, Garcia embodies the evolving fusion of Hispanic influences in contemporary America. 'Color De Dolor,' the lead has lush textures and a kaleidoscopic quality and offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's multifaceted world. Following her acclaimed 2020 release Cha Cha Palace, which garnered attention for its innovative sound, Gemelo solidifies Garcia's place as a rising star in the music scene with captivating melodies and thought-provoking themes.

Review: Melody Gardot's album The Absence is an ambitious blend of global influences, from the sun-drenched tones of Brazil to the evocative atmospheres of Morocco and Buenos Aires. Gardot's songwriting shines, merging her signature wry honesty with the rhythms and moods of the countries she explores. Tracks like 'Mira' and 'Lisboa' are lush with Spanish guitars, harps, and local percussions, crafting a backdrop of lazy days and warm nights. Gardot's voice, ever sultry and inviting, navigates through these arrangements with an ease that recalls classic bossa nova, occasionally flirting with the styles of New Orleans jazz on tracks like 'Goodbye.' While the album sometimes risks slipping into the overly mannered, Gardot maintains a charm that makes The Absence a compelling listen, proving her continual growth as a sophisticated singer/songwriter with a worldly touch.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.

Superheat; their live album released at the dawn of the new millennium and recorded primarily in the classic Amsterdam Paradiso, sonically deposits the group half a year before the release of their seminal sixth full-length If Then Else, by which time they had made the full transition to alternative auteurs. Here the material is a complimentary myriad of cuts from their acclaimed opus How to Measure A Planet?, interspliced with material from their darker, heftier albums such as Mandylion and Nighttime Birds.

Suffice to say, if you're after blissful ambient or contemporary classical best jog on and look elsewhere, because, friend, this ain't that. In comparison, this is breakneck hardcore punk with early heavy metal touches that stops for nobody and nothing. With track names like 'Slut', 'Maniac', 'Sick Boy' and 'War Dogs', you can probably imagine how thick and fast the chords, riffs and drum rolls come, with the raw energy, rage and wit that has always made punk so damned vital here in full effect and more than a hint of early Motorhead to the pacing and lyrical flow, which should tell you everything there is to know.

On these fragile, finger-picked delights Gendron draws on the poetry of celebrated American writer Dorothy Parker and creates arresting folk songs out of them. Rendered in stark terms, with just guitar and voice pressed close to the microphone, it's an intimate experience which is sure to charm any fan of Sandy Denny, Buffy Sainte-Marie or Linda Perhacs. Gendron's heartworn, low-register voice adds an acerbic weight to Parker's writing, and she weaves her guitar playing around the words with understated power.

Despite the album's dark undertones, stemming from personal loss, Gendron masterfully infuses each track with a subtle yet powerful light, reminiscent of Leonard Cohen's ability to navigate darkness with grace. The result is a collection of songs that exude intimacy and familiarity while pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territories. From haunting melodies to quietly aggressive free-rock arrangements combined with Gendron's lyrical talents shining through, Mayday hits all the right notes. It's a beautiful and thought-provoking work that lingers in the mind long after the final note fades away.
