Review: In 1987, Terence Trent D'Arby announced his presence on the UK music scene with an eye catching mix of musical talent, great looks and hyperbole of the highest order. D'Arby made Muhammad Ali look like a shrinking violet. He was smart. He knew, like Ali, that if you tell the world something enough times eventually it will believe you. And it did. His debut album, "The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby", sold a staggering eight million copies. "Sign Your Name" charts his story through to the mid-nineties.

Review: With their flower power, swinging sixties outfits and love of positive messages, Deee-Lite were undoubtedly a product of their times. It's remarkable, though, how well the New York trio's deliciously eccentric debut album, 1990's World Clique, has stood the test of time. Heavy on samples, wavy piano house, disco-tinged workouts and saucer-eyed hip-hop instrumentals, it feels like a snapshot of the NYC party scene at the dawn of the decade. This expanded, two-disc Cherry Red reissue presents the original album in its entirety, alongside a swathe of 12" remixes (including the Q-Tip-sporting Meeting The Minds mix of "Groove Is In The Heart" and a tasty Pal Joey dub of "How Do You Say...Love") and long forgotten B-sides.

Review: Over the course of her last few albums, Lana Del Ray has evolved into a significant chronicler of 21st century American life, with sharper-then-ever lyrics accompanied by fittingly haunting, downbeat and bittersweet musical arrangements. Blue Bannisters, which like so many albums released this year was written and recorded during lockdown, continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, with Del Ray's fragile, melancholic vocals being accompanied by ghostly synthesizer chords, striking piano motifs, drowsy aural textures, simmering strings, gentle guitars and occasional rhythmic nods to trip-hop. It's more bittersweet than intense, but undeniably a creative response to the most testing of times. Considered in those terms, it's a hugely impactful and entertaining album.

Review: Despite the production being beset with problems - not least the theft of her laptop, which contained all of the demo versions of the songs - Lana Del Rey's ninth studio album has been widely praised by critics, with many claiming that it's her most mature and fully-realised set to date. It's certainly an impressive set of songs, with the American artist's usual cinematic sound being expanded via nods to Americana, gospel, trap and string-laden folk. In her words, it's self-consciously 'spiritual' in tone, with Del Rey's delivery of her lyrics - notably more thoughtful and weightier than some of her previous work - being particularly impressive. This Japanese edition boasts an Obi-strip and slightly tweaked artwork.

Review: A sneaky live album from Lana Del Rey, which showcases a radio broadcast recording of the pop superstar's set at 'Worthy Farm' - that would be Glastonbury festival, fact fans - back in 2014. It was a significant performance all told - a mid-afternoon Pyramid Stage debut that earned rapturous praise from pundits and even won over the previously sniffy indie bible NME. Beginning with a heady and intoxicating take on 'Cola', the triumphant set - captured complete with crowd noise, of course - boasts superb live (and frequently string-laden) versions of 'Ultraviolence', 'Blue Jeans', 'Video Games' and 'National Anthem', amongst many other attractions.

Review: When vital bandmember Andrew Fletcher suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions for 'Memento Mori', even Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered aloud whether Depeche Mode would continue. Yet somehow, Gore and Gahan put their much-discussed differences aside, knuckled down and produced something fittingly special: an album that may well be the iconic outfit's most consistent and impressive body of work for decades. Naturally, darkness abounds, with opener 'My Cosmos Is Mine' - all evocative vocals, distorted electronic beats, dark sonic textures and mutilated choral vocal samples - setting the tone for a set that once again brilliantly blends dark synth-pop, gnarled guitars and the kind of lyrical melancholia that stays with you for days. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including 'Ghosts Again', 'Soul With Me' and closing cut 'Speak To Me'.

Review: In his recent book Major Labels, a history of popular music in seven genres, Kelefa Sanneh argues that pop is now so free of defined boundaries that's it's "barely a genre at all". Listening to LA rapper, singer and producer Doja Cat's third album, it's hard to disagree. Polished, professional and ear-catching, Planet Her is a hugely enjoyable romp whose hybrid, kaleidoscopic constructions variously synthesize elements of R&B, synth0heavy Afro-pop, dancehall, hip-hop, hyperpop, trap, 21st century bass music and much more besides. Throw in guest spots from the likes of Young Thug, Ariana Grande and JD, and you have an on-point pop album that will resonate far longer than most similarly framed sets.
