51717 - "The Glove" (8:39)
51717 - "Porsche" (4:07)
51717 - "Regard" (6:31)
Silent Servant - "Time In Body" (3:44)
Silent Servant - "Severed Union" (4:13)
Review: The sixth issue from Jealous God, and the first of what promises to be another year of intrigue for the label, pairs up visual director Juan Mendez with 51717, aka New York artist Lili Schulder. Any fans of Schulder's 51717 cassette for Opal Tapes or her Shadowlust collaboration with Svengalisghost will be excited by the prospect of some new music committed to wax and she's on wonderfully abstract form here. Listening to opening track "The Glove" is an experience similar to being slowly covered by a viscous liquid to the point of suffocation, with her barely audible spoken word delivery only adding to the sense of foreboding. Complementing this, 51717 provides two shorter but equally striking compositions with "Regard" especially chilling. It's a mood that seeps into the two Silent Servant productions with "Severed Union" ripe mixtape opener material. Do check the mix CD from Surface Tension pair Nihar Bahall & Jason Polastri too!

Akamoi - "Little Black Box"
Ynaktera - "Three Phase"
El Cosmonauta - "7K-OK (A)"
Mariano - "Mysterious Way"
Ghostphace - "Rome Boredom"
Scual - "The Fade Of John Gray"
Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. What a blinder!

Beat Spacek - "Alone In Da Sun" (5:50)
Lukid - "Hair Of The Dog" (4:33)
Review: Well Curated is a series of releases and parties that - in its own words - "reflects the ethnomusicology of the last 50 years of music" - and aims to reach into all genres, merging classic styles and breaking down barriers. Steve Spacek occupies the A-side with the breezy broken beat and soul-in-space of 'Alone In Da Sun', while Lukid's 'Hair Of The Dog' is a more intense counterpart, with wobbling sub-bass and swirling, surging atmospherics hovering above.

Sohrab - "Azadi" (4:22)
Sohrab - "Distant Sun" (7:18)
Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode & Sohrab are behind this one and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the 'Haleeteh?' version. 'Azadi' has the feel of a sixties spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun' shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Dima Disk - "Casino" (3:55)
Ajakaja & Mart Avi - "Symmerty Of Human Body Jimmy Winkle Waltz" (9:52)
Neuronphase - "Dissapointed" (5:50)
Superstar & Star - "Looking At The Star & Heavens" (Rhythm Doctor Youtube remould) (5:58)
Review: With Ajukaja, Maria Minerva and Hypnosaurus now something of recognised names thanks to Tallinn-based Porridge Bullet, the label reinstates its Bullet various artist series that helped the label find its footing in 2012. Sporting a new batch of emerging artists, this second edition is as fresh-faced as the first, and perhaps the wildcard of the four tracks is Trinidad's Neville Lawrence, aka Superstar & Star, whom Porridge Bullet apparently fell in love with after discovering his YouTube channel. S&S's cut "Looking At The Star & Heavens" makes the grade thanks to Tallinn-based London ex-pat DJ Rhythm Doctor cyphering the smoky vocals and air-pushing drums of the original into a 'YouTube Mould'. Ajukaja hooks up with Porridge Bullet solid Mart Avi for an eerily minimal and quiet "Symmerty Of Human Body Jimmy Winkle Waltz", while Neuronphase makes a second VA appearance (still no solo release) with a dusty slo-mo jam joining the dots between the tropes of Madteo and Lobster Theremin records. Meanwhile Dima Disk's is given A1 privileges with a lo-fi sweety of a tune - "Casino".

Layne - "Love" (5:00)
Autumns - "Imposter Syndrome" (8:38)
DVA Damas - "Shortcut To X" (4:01)
Review: We were wondering what Regis' Downwards stable was planning for 2017, but it's clear that the UK techno lynchpin has absolutely everything under control. The year kicks off with a collaborative EP, The Immortal Eye, featuring a special selection of artists whose sounds only tinker with the techno formula, and which will undoubtedly appeal to a whole spectrum of electronic music enthusiasts. Jan Grebenstein and Christine Seefried, the former having already appeared for the label recently, team up on "Wufferfraction", a mid-tempo roller that ticks along at a steady pace amid a sea of electrifying acid sonics, while fellow recent signee Layne delivers a noxious cloud of rhythmic ambient through "Love". On the B-side, the Autumns outfit offer a cold, bleak, pseudo techno groove on "Imposter Syndrome", leaving the excellent DVA Damas to coax the cold out of the wave thanks to an excellent tune by the name of "Shortcut To X". Recommended.

Ambiq Remixed: Ricardo Villalobos/Tobias
Tund (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (10:43)
Toxic Underground (Tobias remix) (8:05)
Review: For some of the more surreal, free and improvisation electro-acoustic jazz kicking about these days check out Claudio Puntin, Samuel Rohrer and Max Loderbauer's Ambiq LP. That 11-track album fused interstellar themes associable with the music of Sun Ra with left of field sounds you'd expect to hear on a label like Type. Arjunamusic founder Samuel Rohrer has suitably commissioned remixes by minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos and Ostgut Ton pillar Tobias, and both provide distinctly different and, to say the least, fascinating results. Villalobos's scatter-junk remix of "Tund" is enough to make you feel as though you're stuck in a tiny crawl space of dirt, driftwood and broken wind chimes, while Tobias's trademark techno percussion lightly rests below the humming bassline, cinematic atmospheres and shuffling field recordings of "Toxic Underground". House and techno and its most avant garde.

Raw Ambassador - "Attack, Attack!" (5:49)
Review: New Italian label Hiroshima 45 Chernobyl 86 Windows 95 present Pubblicazione 001. Starting off on the A side is Penelope's Fiance from Thessaloniki, who serves up a lo-fi and coldwave perspective of the Boards Of Canada on "Run & Gun", while Italians Rawmance and Security team up on the slo-mo EBM mutation of "Un Bon Flic" - bringing you the sound of latter's Knick Knack Yoda burger club in Rome. On the flip, Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani gives us the gnarly 303 acid epic "Do Not Deliver Me Into The Enemy's Hands" and Raw Ambassador aka Antonio Barbetta gives us the early industrial sounds of "Attack, Attack!" with its rusty aesthetic calling to mind the classics of Portion Control or Skinny Puppy.

We Can Be Friends (6:34)
Morocco (6:27)
Fast Jam (5:26)
Untitled 11 (5:28)
Review: All that we know about the enigmatically named SaPa is they are affiliated with Weimar crew Giegling, emerging earlier this year with the Fuubutsushi album on the Forum sublabel that garnered comparisons with Prince Of Denmark. Sa Pa's penchant for subaqueous techno now lands the producer a 12" debut on Marcel Dettmann Recordings. Lead track "We Can Be Friends" is so dubbed-out and murky that it could almost run as a background percussive piece in your mix - that's not to say that we don't think it's absolutely killer, because it is! "Morocco" is completely in a world of its own, crackly feedback and sparse sonics abound, while "Fast Jam" is a heady techno stomper with a punchy low-end and sublime percussion, a track that is followed by another murky load of swamped atmospherics in the form of "Untitled 11". If we have to be completely honest, this has been our favourite MDR 12" in a long time, and it comes with a heartfelt recommendation. Killer.

Ego Experior (7:40)
Review: Dino Sabatini returns to his own Outis Music label with another mesmerising selection of deep electronic sounds that seem to take plenty of influences from dub, downtempo, ambient and trip hop. The open has a creeping melodic sequence that is forever subtly shifting and brings a sense of eeriness to the smooth and unhurried dub rhythms below. 'Inenarrabilis' is then a double quick flurry of tiny synth loops and trippy effects then 'Plena Lunae' allows you to breathe once more and sink into a vast dub soundscape. 'Ego Experior' shuts down with some paranoid baselines bubbling up through a slowly churning groove. Some quality work here for sure.

Port
Intruder
Review: Brussels label Vlek emerge with Sattelite, another deadly transmission from the mysterious Sagat, which details a new approach from last year's Klock approved debut EP Few Mysterious Solved In A Year Of Contact. Opening track lays down two minutes of hazed synths and pinballed metallic textures gradually succumbing to the threat of oncoming claustrophobic hissing and skittering hi-hat, whilst the title track is a master class in weaving forward momentum from choral samples as Sagat wisely tones down the percussive elements to a tinny 2 step beat. Ease the plate over and Sagat goes heads down for the tunnelling concrete rhythmics of "Port" which has a touch of the Fachwerks about it. It's followed and the EP is finished by the abstract sound design of "Intruder" which should interest fans of Astro Dynamics or Werk.

Review: Far out beat science from Sam KDC for the Auxiliary label. Our journey into the unknown begins with the lolloping, strangely alluring "Immolate". Driven by an otherworldly vocal loop, you've never heard anything like it. "Navigation To Nowhere" is all about the never-ending anticipation and drama of techno. Loopy, insistent and ultimately teasing, you will drive your crowd bananas with this. Further on we're slapped softly by the palpitating dubbish dynamics of "Vessel" and sent to the darkest corners of techno on "Purgatory". Unique, thrilling and daring, KDC has smashed it once again.

Review: KDC digs deep into the satanic study of angles and ratios with his latest Auxiliary exploration. "Atonement" is an industrial strength snowplough cutting through mountains of ice with a high end riff that buzzes over the hammering, bucking drums while "Summoned" takes what could conventionally be a Funk D'Void-style house groove before turning it inside out with a low end drone that grows incessantly, washing out the original groove. "Vertex" plays the role of conjurer with its pertinent hi-hat shaking and scuffing over a deep sea bass/kick arrangement while "Clairvoyance" updates some of the ideas of acid techno but within a drum & bass framework. Genuinely unique.

Review: Martin Herterich aka Stockholm's Sand Circles "Motor City" gets the remix treatment. Originally appeared on Los Angelino imprint Not Not Fun back in 2012. These fine revisions are by fellow purveyors of Scandinavian underground electronics. Northern Electronics main man Abdulla Rashim's take on the title track is even more haunting and emotive than the original while Swedish trio Yen Towers take on "Endless Nights" is rather savage in its restraint and quite chilling, truth be told. Finally Astro:Dynamics affiliated Quiltland's remix of "Motor City" retains the old school charm of the original in a great modern synth-pop interpretation.

Review: After last year's brooding 7", Regis and Silent Servant return to Minimal Wave with their Sandra Electronics project and to be honest, we couldn't be more excited. Hearing what these two techno leviathans are up to in their more industrial modes is both a privilege and a pleasure to the ear-drums. Exploring the genre-less corners of coldwave and post-punk, this six-track EP is probably one if this year's hottest releases so far. From the crisp, metallic drum twists of "It Slipped Her Mind" to the almost Middle-Eastern sounds of "Protection Now!", and the noisy, Gristle-like bounce of "Publicity (demo)", it's a total winner in our books. You also get a live version of "Want Need", where the duo culminate into total insanity and tie things off in fine style. Are these two going to concentrate on this kind of stuff form now one? We hope so, this is it. Highly recommended.

Review: It's safe to say that Sawf can now be classed as a pillar of the contemporary techno sound. Having released on every label from Per Trax to M_REC and Code Is Law, the producer is now a respected member of the Berlin alliance, both for his tunes and for his DJ sets. Modal Analysis, a Greek imprint dealing in militant techno, has also been on his CV and he returns to the shadowy label with four grizzly sound sculptures. "Sonic1" and "Sonic2" are all fuzz and doom, a wonderful cacophony of noise and power electronics. "Sonic3" is a loose techno missile free of kicks and full of percussive power, while "Sonic4" let's the machines unwind and unfold into a rhythmic soundscape with a bleak outlook. Recommended.

Review: Scanone is a producer who has proven his versatility and so it's no wonder he's been tapped up for some killer tunes by the Reposition label. This blistering electro EP features three originals that mix up industrial textures with caustic drums and star-gazing synth work. 'Vivre' is an eye-watering opener with sheet metal sounds and frosty pads, 'Kraft' is then a slower more pensive electro soundscape and 'Vertabre' has a truly brutal groove that will rattle the walls of any club space, as well as dislodge brain cells. Sync 24 rounds things out with a remix of the same cut that becomes a sonic blizzard.

Review: Mainrecords returns with the 'Radiation Dance' EP which is the newest outing from co-label owner Matthias Schildger. It opens with the sleek electronic lines and Kraftwerkian hypnosis of 'CH Dance' on icy rhythms and lush synth chords. 'Radiation' is a more rugged techno sound but still artful in its pads and widescreen melodic scope. There is a retro 80s feel to 'Divine Divide' while 'Rzwodzwo's Brain' birds some more buffed metal textures, tripped-out FX and jittery rhythms. Last of all is 'Datapoppers' which is a great blend of analogue kits and drums, retro-future synths and curious cosmic moods.

Review: Lempuyang makes it to release number 15 with a devastatingly deep new EP from Deepchord Records co-founder Mike Schommer. He kicks off with 'Scapegoat' featuring the alluring vocals of Milly James which echo out over super slow-motion dub rhythms and icy pads. The Pole rework brings more crisp hits and distant eerie drones over a more pronounced rhythm but one that remains devilishly sparse. On the flip, 'Deceivers' has more hypotonic drive - a fleshy dub stepper to lock in any 'floor and then 'Believers' slows it down to a crawl once more. An essential dub EP that promises no represses.

The raw energy of the designs are enhanced by intricate arrangements and fresh sound design which marks a bold step in Schwefelgelb's evolution as they fuse hard-stomping techno with tonal playfulness. Review: Sid, Eddy, Nyx and Hal together make up the notorious Schwefelgelb act, a brash, noisy but ultimately fell-good electro-techno band with a gritty, below-the-radar kinda feel. For example, "Bis Zum Nachsten Tag" is a banger with a dicing bassline that can easily be enjoyed by any sort of dance DJ, and the same goes for "Balancier Dich" - a hell of a techno slicer. "Da Konnte" diversifies into a deep, more tribalistic sort of percussion that'll appeal to heads, but the pick of the lot is most definitely "So Heisser Es Wird", a heavy-loaded techno stomper with a sweltering bass-bang for the big room. Blind Delon - "Fuzz" (HIV + vocal mix) (5:07)
Review: This typically forthright and mind-mangling release marks the fourth and final instalment in Khemia's Magnum Opus series. It delivers two unheard versions of tracks from aufnahme + wiedergarbe and Maniaque's growing back catalogue. First up on side A is SARIN's pulsating revision of Schwelfelgelb's "Fokus", which combines the throbbing drums and mind-altering bass of Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb style EBM with the kind of sharp, restless stabs more often found on basement or warehouse-friendly old house anthems. Meanwhile on the flip, vocalist HIV+ adds his drowsy, stylish voice to Blind Delon's dirt-encrusted, eyeliner-clad gothic synth-pop number "Fuzz". It's something of a chugger, all told, powered by an undulating, arpeggio style bassline and clandestine, foreboding synthesizer lines.

The brand new Youth imprint was inaugurated by fellow Brit Yard a couple of months ago, and Shamos (pronounced 'Shay-mos' apparently) carries on with the nasty vibes here with these four kick-ass cuts. There are discernible grooves coursing throughout this latest Shielding record, but the beats play second fiddle to nimble melodic lines and atmospheric ripples. Even on 'Indoors', the more kinetic thrum of the beat feels closer to a tonal synth part than a beat. 'Vinter' meanwhile invites us into a beatless realm where the synthetic organisms in Shielding's biome have the run of the place. It's deep, immersive techno existing on the fringes, where the most interesting things tend to happen.

Review: Fronted by Texan musician Craig Clouse, Shit and Shine's skewed combination of primitive techno, industrial, noise and classic garage rock has gained them a significant live reputation, bolstered by their intimidating array of releases, predominantly arriving on the UK-based Riot Season label. Their thick-set musical style makes them an ideal candidate for a release on the Diagonal imprint run by Powell, and like his music, this eponymous EP takes a similarly skewed take on the dancefloor; "Blowhannon" is like vintage Cherrystones with added disco muscle, "Value" throws raw rhythms into a gravel filled washing machine and "Shower Curtain" combines a deeply sleazy sense of funk together with ethereal delay; most visceral is "Dixie Peach", a swollen morass of steroid pumped bass. Big tip on this one, no matter what your musical preferences are...

Review: Simon Shreeve appears again this year for Karl O'Connor's esteemed imprint, following up the impressive Healing Bowl EP. It's no wonder really; the man also known as Monic pushes the kind of highly-engineered modern industrial music on his own Osiris Musik label, so easily finds a welcome home here. On side A, harsh textural abrasions are contrasted by body bashing bass frequencies on the demonic "System Living" while the seething and slow burning breaks contrasted by eerie chimes and nefarious sound design on "Silver Sun" sounds like running through a nightmare in slow motion. The paranoid and immersive sound design of the title track (on the flip) is reminiscent of some of Trent Reznor's soundtrack work, yet fantastic in its own right. Like Shifted is doing likewise of late, Shreeve deconstructs the classic aesthetic of UK techstep, deconstructing it in a modern format.

We've certainly been eagerly awaiting it her at Juno HQ and it's great to see Violence And Divinity live up to and surpass these expectations! Silent Servant mans the A Side with two tracks that will be familiar to anyone that's been lucky enough to catch his live sets of late, indeed it's almost too easy to visualise the flashing strobes as the pummelling EBM lines of "Cut Unconscious" unravel and beat you down. The two accompanying productions from Ho's Broken English Club dovetail nicely, but veer off into more wave orientated territory, with "Divinity" sounding quite like some of the earlier material put out by In Aeternam Vale. In a word superb.

Review: Skee Mask's run on Ilian Tape shows no sign of slowing down as his Skee Series clocks up volume seven. As always the sheer weight of ideas spilling out of his studio is remarkable, veering from the gorgeous aqueous tones of 'Daytime Gamer (version)' to the barely there drones of 'MDP93'. Beyond the dazzling acrobatics of his albums and EPs, these kinds of releases prove the range of inspiration the Masked one operates with, where intricate and exquisitely sculpted soundworlds can be as engrossing as the fullest, most dynamic beat construction. Skee Mask, with these sublime ambient drops you are really spoiling us.

Review: Given the respective recent outputs of Low Jack and D.K, you'd expect this first collaborative missive under the Slack DJ's alias to be rather good. It is, of course, though it's probably the most experimental release either producer has been involved with. Opener "Hoops" sets the tone, offering a befuddled trip through chopped-up, constantly changing leftfield techno territory - all beaten-up rhythms, dubbed-out electronics and odd noises. There's a slightly more dreamy feel to "75011", though it still sounds like it was recorded in a cement mixer full to the brim with sand and gravel. Flip for two takes on "Glasshouse Mountain", where D.K's gorgeous synthesizers are put through the ringer in the company of edgy, otherworldly rhythms and end-of-days effects.

Review: Chicago's Hakim Murphy teams up with Lyon's Vince Noog as Slowmotion for the latest episode of the excellent Machining Dreams series - Murphy's own personal outlet. Lead track "Affaire De Familie" wonks and bleeps its way across metallic percussion shots and grizzly low-ends, while "Evasion Urbaine" is more melodic and heavy on the sci-fi pads. Finale "Le Grand Saut" ties things off with a squelchy feel, taking the duo's industrial beats into deep space. Fine hardware jams for the early hours as per usual from Machining Dreams.

Review: Soft Crash electrifies dancefloors with their immersive orchestration as they craft uplifting sonic waves that synchronise with the unified heartbeat of their crowds. Their EP 'NRG' showcases the Berlin-based collaboration between Berghain resident Phase Fatale and French producer Pablo Bozzi. Combining mechanical precision with fantastical elements, they deliver Italo Body Music anthems that pulse with post-humanist energy. Fresh from their 2022 debut album, the EP blends Italo and synth-wave with wave-pop, acid house, and post-punk influences. With sanguine vocals from Kyiv-based musician Ready in LED, Soft Crash continues to carve their unique niche in dance music.

Review: A new Vlek release is always a welcome sight here at Juno HQ as the label have got the perfect balance of an eminently interesting roster of electronic artists and a killer approach to design - both are very much evident on this new collection from Squeaky Lobster. The Brussels based producer has been a prolific outlet for Vlek over the years, and the Killing Eleven EP stands out as some of his finest work to date. Happily weaving between dreamy orchestral moments and crunched up hip hop beats that sound like Dilla set in concrete, there's a bottom heavy aesthetic throughout that gives the Lobster a distinctive swing. It's a cohesive eight track suite, yet the ghostly dynamics of "The Monster Swim" still stands out.

Review: The Stars sound is all about cosmic techno visions and that is proven here from the first moment of 'Of All The Worlds.' It's got its head up above the stars with cracking perc and beats all overlaid with supple synths. 'The Embrace' is more punchy but just as sonorous and a Nuron remix goes deep. The extra background details of this are worth noting too for real purists - the vinyl version comes with superb sleeve and label artwork by Abdul Haqq and the tunes were mastered by the one and only Matt Colton at Metropolis, then cut to 180g heavyweight vinyl.

Review: Even by his own prolific standards, Stefan Laubner has been pretty darn busy so far this year with an album length debut on the Smallville label swiftly followed by the second of two releases on his own Something operation. New STL material always seems to bring something new to the table, despite the reclusive German's distinct style and defined approach and that much is evident on Time Is Just An Illusion. The usual combination of extended productions and run out groove hugging loops is present, with lead track "Star Child" Laubner at his most melodically enriching. A skittering rhythmic arrangement on "Loop A" precedes marauding release highlight "Knowledge" which you can already see Ben UFO pulling for.

Review: **Repress Action! Now available in transparent gold vinyl, Modern Love come through with a long overdue repress of Andy Stott's We Stay Together, the follow up to his incredible reinvention on Passed Me By** Opening with the beatless "Submission", a Fennesz style wash of recorded waves subjected to crushing compression, he moves into the 100bpm territory of "Posers" which concentrates on a roughly treated, barely there vocal sample, and "Bad Wires", which slowly disorientates the listener with its sludgy bass loop and fizzing atmosphere. Meanwhile "We Stay Together" opts for a cleaner atmosphere with demonic undertones, whilst "Cherry Eye" offers the faintest sceptre of melody in a cavernous backdrop. Finally "Cracked" hypnotises with its metallic textures and undercurrent of acid which gurgles beneath. For anyone who considers themselves even remotely adventurous in their techno tastes, We Stay Together is essential.

Review: G-23 makes his debut under the Strange Audio Dreams moniker, coming through on Italy's young Art-Aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. "Error Design 1" is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while "Error Design 2" strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. Pan's NHK YX Koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, Cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. All in all, a rather essential piece of gear.

Review: Italian label Suoni Incisi launched in 2020 with a mission to offer up hugely emotional electronic music that fuses experimentation with multi-genre explorations. The boss that gave their name to the label takes charge of this third transmission and it is a deep techno journey into sustained chords, mysterious pads and the sort of muttered vocals that add real atmosphere. 'Track 2' on the flipside is similar in make-up with liquid rhythms, cavernous and dubby bass and subtle musings, this time with some eerie flute melodies drifting up top.

Review: Harlem & Irving label partner Brian Kelly assumes his Supplement alias here for a new and limited edition 12" that features two of his tasteful and challenging sounds. Kelly is always out to disrupt and subvert and does so with aplomb here as the a-side title track starts with a whisper but soon grows with layers of found sound, piano, percussion, and ethereal voices. It then collapses before reemerging with melodic and tonal guitars and pulses. On the flip, the same tune comes 'Revisioned' but is much more cold and distorted, edgy and urgent.

Review: Few labels would choose to issue a CD compilation for their second release, so kudos to Perc Trax offshoot Submit for showing some ambition, more so when the focus of Feral Grind is on a number of producers who "operate at the intersection of techno, drone and DIY electronics". This 12" sampler sets the tone for what to expect from the compilation that's been curated by Ali 'Perc' Wells and music journalist Justin Farrar with tracks from Pete Swanson, Burial Hex, Prostitutes and Profligate sharing space either side of the record. Review: Confessions is a new 7" label courtesy of ever-surprising London based label Blackest Ever Black, who take their enthusiasm for industrial techno and scorched post-punk and apply it to the 7" template. With appearances from techno hero Regis, cult underground artist Vatican Shadow, and post-punk outfit Black Rain in BEB's short lifespan, noise legend Pete Swanson's appearance on the first 7" is yet another indication of the respect the label is gaining among the underground noise, industrial and techno community. His track, "Positive", is a searing piece of dread which is perhaps even less accessible than his recent Man With Potential album on Type, while Moin's "Elsie" is an example of typically scorched industrial post-punk in the spirit of Tropic of Cancer. Strictly limited to 300, the intricate artwork is complemented by a dinked 7" with vintage stylings.

Review: Turkey's Vent Records prides itself on releasing "unpretentious techno" and so they should given how saturated and hyped-up the market can get! Their latest juggernaut comes from Stephanie Sykes, an artist who has appeared with an EP on the excellent Full Panda label last year. "Black Simulation" itself is actually a buzzing drone piece surrounded by sinister sonics, and "Creep" is similarly hollow and sparse albeit rhythmic. The movement grows stronger on "Hyper", the first tune to contain kicks, percussion...and a whole load of synthy nastiness for the dancefloor! Full Panda's own Dasha Rush strips the tune down to its bare bones and adds in a layer of booming subbass for good measure.

Review: In terms of mental Swedish techno reissues, you can't do better this week than this reappraisal of the Frak and Smea split LP from Borft Records. Initially released jointly by Jan Svensson's label and TE Records back in 2003, Split was only one of two releases through Borft that year; given the avalanche of material the label has released over the years such a fact should not be overlooked and listening to the material it's understandable why this period in the Borft discography is described as "very silent and strange". Tobias Ekberg's SMEA project lines the A Side with two sprawling freeform new beat in "Koala Grip" and "Gott Medd Kaffe" bookending a pair of abstracted compositions. On the Frak side, "Svett 2" finds Jan Svensson and friends dabbling in pitch shifting minimal sounds, whilst "Malad" is much closer to the deranged electronics we all now love them for.

Review: Austin, Texas based multidisciplinary label Monofonus Press brings us a curious compilation EP which is testament to their electric and eccentric taste. First up Willie Burns and Mannequin Record's Alessandro Adriani team up as Interbrain for a sublime retro inspired analogue jam in the form of "Molecular psychology" while Sweden's Empfanger give us the snarling modular techno of "Charles" which will appeal to fans on An-i. On the flip is Samoln with "Tsch" which sounds like a creepy midi file complete with haunting klavier and cheap machine drum rhythm. Idea Fire Company & Brr give us "The Terrible Comet Salt" which has a peculiar narrative over a haunting low key composition. Highly recommended!

Review: The third release for Alicia Carrera and Donato Dozzy's Maga Circe Musica is by Le Petit, a duo comprised of Dozzy and Milanese producer Stefano Ghittoni. The self-titled offering takes influence from balearic legend Daniele Baldelli's pioneering work, as well that of fellow northern Italian veteran Marco Dionigi - who together ran Pedivelle Records. The re-interpretation of their sounds here by Dozzy and Ghittoni seem fitting, as sonically it seems right in line with the former's distinct brand of tribal trance and could well have influenced the Sound Of Rome that he's synonymous with - particularly on tracks like 'Sukia' and 'Niente'. Add moments of glacial dub techno, downbeat electronica as well as immersive ambient soundscapes, and you have quite a varied EP overall.
