Luke Abbott & Jake Wyllie
Cat: BFFT 2. Rel: 22 Sep 15
Xantako (9:21)
Isaka (2:59)
Etxeberri (10:55)
Review: Border Community's Luke Abbott returns to his own Buffalo Temple alongside newcomer Jake Wyllie, coming through with a self-titled three-tracker. "Xanatko", "Isaka" and "Exteberri" truly explore the deepest realms of electronic music, and together make for a mind-blowing experience on the headphones. You'll enter a realm made of woozy soundscapes, field recordings and subtle waves of improvised free jazz. It's dream music for the dreamers, one of the highest calibre. A tip for the all the ambient diggers!

Review: Great melodic electronica with pop appeal. Stunning vocal bits by J S Pool singer Martha Tilston and clean production take you on a trip. Maybe best described as a mix of Lamb and Future Sound Of London? Great record!

Worry Heart
Review: Future R&B from the planet Vancouver, after a selection of under-radar releases on King Deluxe and UNO, Evy Jane make their EP debut on Ninja Tune. Deep, dreamy and daring, each of these four tracks will instantly sooth and stimulate. From the light dubby flutters and Balearic references of "Worry Heart" to the slow motion, synth-submersion heartache of "Closer", the partnership of Evelyn Mason and Jeremiah Klein shows great promise and leaves you wanting more. Fans of anyone from WEEKND to Goldfrapp to The Knife to Kwamie Liv should pay serious attention.

La Visite EP
Cat: VER 102. Rel: 12 May 15
La Visite (Die Wilde Jagd remix) (7:27)
La Visite (Low Jack remix) (4:12)
Midnight Man (Gilb'R Midnight version) (6:09)
Review: The peerless Versatile label revisit Etienne Jaumet's 2014 opus La Visite for this 12" of the same name which finds Low Jack, Dusseldorf crew Die Wilde Jagd and label founder Gilb'R all reworking tracks. First up is Die Wilde Jagd, a new production endeavour from Dusseldorf fixtures Sebastian Lee Philipp and Ralf Beck who call on the kraut spirits of the German city for a fine reimaginations of Jaumet's title track which sounds like Neu drenched in all manner of loving delay. Low Jack attacks the same track and his remix could not be more different, a thrilling soupy ride through the dub wasteland - such a talent this guy! Gilb'R ends the 12" on a more relaxing note with a wondrous ambient rendition of "Midnight Man".

Nothing Is Free
Cat: LINO 71. Rel: 17 May 16
Nothing Is Free (5:14)
Nothing Is Free (Surgeon remix) (5:32)
Kontorted (4:10)
Review: Downwards boss Regis surely does keep us on our toes still after all these years. After laying low for a while, he has got the label back in full swing after unleashing a monster EP by Simon Shreeve. This time he now presents new material by maverick producer and UK legend Justin Broderick under the JK Flesh moniker. The brooding grindcore dub of "Nothing Is Free" will be right up any Downwards loyalists alley, as will the snarling audio assault of "Kontorted" which slithers around walls of hiss, feedback and guttural low end brutalism. Surgeon's remix of "Nothing Is Free" blows the doors off in pretty spectacular fashion as always, exploiting the raw voltage of his famed modular setup brilliantly.

Punters Step Out
Club Scared
Review: Hemlock amusingly describes this latest batch of Joe greatness as "two highly spirited but deceptively strong sonic cocktails" yet even those familiar with the unassuming producer's previous work on Untold's label and Hessle will be knocked sideways. The title cut from Punters Step Out effortlessly demonstrates Joe's capacity for embracing and channelling weirdness is matched by few of his contemporaries; the track's defining drunken Hammond is warped to an insane degree and smelted to a ruff edged drum lick that will cause all manner of chaos down the dancehall. A B Side complement you say? Well yes there is "Club Scared" which seems to be an all too appropriate commentary on people ripping off the likes of Blawan et al. With this and the recent Hessle drop, Joe might just have shut down 2013.

Muizenberg

Muizenberg
Muizenberg (Seiji remix)
Muizenberg (The 2 Bears remix)
Review: After their all-conquering album has begun its march into end of year lists, Planet Mu follow up on the success of South African band John Wizards with this single, which lifts the sun-soaked indie rock lilt of "Muizenberg" and offers it up for remixing purposes. Seiji steps up first with a fractured version that taps into the purple dubstep sound as a touchstone for the day-glo synths and grinding bass swells to work from, making for a dazzling slice of modern electronica. The 2 Bears instead opt for a slickly produced house effort that piles the crafty studio trickery on heavy for a dynamic and effervescent revision befitting of the original's summer baiting tones.

Vedanta Remixed (feat El Choop, Sebastian Mullaert, Van Bonn, Federson, Paul 90 mixes)
Vedanta (El Choop Reconstruct) (7:42)
Vedanta (Sebastian Mullaert Ambient mix) (2:50)
Vedanta (Van Bonn remix) (4:44)
Vedanta (Federson SF dub) (7:35)
Vedanta (Paul 90 Basement mix) (6:51)
Review: This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. Now, some nine years later, it gets served up as a remix EP. There's a dark El Choop Reconstruct, a gorgeous ambient version from Sebastian Mullaert, a minimal headscape from Van Bonn, Federson SF goes warm and dubby and then a crisp, tech-edged vibe from Paul 90 ends the EP in style.

Shiviana (feat Khidja & Smagghe & Cross mixes)
Cat: SC&P 001 . Rel: 12 Dec 16
Shiviana (4:16)
Shiviana (Khidja remix) (8:33)
Ikiryo (Smagghe & Cross version) (9:11)
Ikiryo (7:43)
Review: Having come to light on Optimo Music, The Junto Club now kick off the Snap Crackle & Pop label with a new single that builds on their promising reputation. "Shiviana" is a perfect encapsulation of what the band are about, channelling all kinds of wave styles into their instruments but still coming off sounding contemporary and seductive at once. Khidja comes on board to remix the track, turning it into an acidic burner with a heavy dose of bombast thrown in. "Ikiryo" presents a more post punk side to The Junto Club sound, which Smagghe & Cross then buff up into a crafty electro number for the dancers.

Live At Berlin Atonal 2015
Cat: ATONAL 003. Rel: 26 Jul 16
Andes (16:04)
Himalaya (17:05)
Review: Two excerpts from Max Loderbauer and Jacek Sienkiewicz's live show from Berlin Atonal in 2015 performing a live premiere which took up where their last collaborative EP titled Ridges (on Sienkiewicz's Recognition imprint) left off. Accompanied by stunning greyscale visuals of mountain ranges by Pedro Maia, the duo's transcendental drone therapy built up to some intense and powerful moments. "Andes" features bizarre voices and chants over chilling and glacial electroacoustic experiments. While on the flip, "Himalaya" delves deeper into the snowy mountains where strong arctic winds go head to head with violent washes of feedback.

Stuntman Mike Car's Soundtrack Part 1
Ricardo Miranda - "Polysynthetic Jungle"
Jesus Gonsev & The Troubled Kids Gang - "Neon Nights"
Life Recorder - "Winter Feeling"
Trevor Deep Jr - "T To Da P"
Review: Spanish deep house label Troubled Kids celebrate their 10th release with a various artist EP featuring music from Rush Hour and Neroli act Ricardo Miranda, French producer Life Recorder, Delsin house head Trevor Deep Jr. and label reps Jesus Gonsev & The Troubled Kids Gang. Waves of synths, Chicago bass and snappy snares control Miranda's busy "Polysynthetic Jungle", while The Troubled Kids Gang opt for looped Rhodes and a streamlined arrangement in "Neon Nights". Life Recorder stays deep and piano driven with "Winter Feeling", which transitions into Trevor Deep Jr.'s "T To Da P"; something moodier with a percussive skip. Four solid cuts of deeper, Chicago inspired house.

A Disseminated Darkness On Inner Personality Status EP

Novacom - "Outsiders" (5:12)
JK Flesh - "No Self Control" (5:24)
Le Syndicat - "Maximalist (1993)" (4:01)
Le Syndicat - "Prothesis Pack Xtract 08 (1983)" (3:52)
Le Syndicat - "Maximalist" (Ekman remix) (6:05)
Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Immersion Obscura
Immersion Obscura (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: CS 100. Rel: 06 Jun 23
TVTM - "Experiment Obscura" (4:26)
Jo Rad Silver - "Immersion Theatre III" (3:53)
Review: Josh Dahlberg is The Valley and the Mountain aka TVTM and is an artist who has made a big move recently from the deep westside of Detroit all the way across to the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. He he arrives on Central Scientific for its inaugural release with Detroit-based producer and Akka & BeepBeep founder, Jo Rad Silver, taking care of the flip. Next to an array of hardware, there is plenty of improvisation with guitars in this EP - 'Experiment Obscura' is a widescreen and dramatic ambient cut with a meditative feel and 'Immersion Theatre III' is another empty but inviting piece with curlicues, wispy pads, distant guitar echoes and moodiness to spare.

Review: Jatun is Alan Grosvenor (guitar, keys, bass, loops) and Scott Worley (vocals, keys, guitars, laptop). Alan and Scott met in Portland and started writing the songs that would slowly form into the mish-mash of cables, circuits, ivory and alcohol known as Jatun. They began recording their self-titled debut album in September 2005, and it's been engineered/mixed by Scott & Alan and mastered by Carl Saff. Influenced by an expansive range of artists, genres and styles, Alan and Scott have learned to interpret and appreciate sound from a broad perspective. Such open ears have facilitated an understanding of sonic interplay, and an acute attention to arrangement and detail.

Houston
Review: Johnny Jewel has spent the last few years living close to California's arid deserts, something which apparently came as a shock to a musician who has spent most of his life dodging rain and snow in Portland and Montreal. Pining after moisture (his words), the Chromatics main man decided to record an album designed to play "as a singular liquid movement". In a statement accompanying the album, he describes the new age-tinged, ambient set as the aural equivalent of "the ever-changing movement of clouds obscuring the moon". It's an apt description, with sweeping synthesizer movements, gentle melodies and the producer's usual cinematic instincts combining to create a retro-futurist ambient masterpiece.
