Review: There is a wealth of Roy Ayer reissues out there right now, and we're all for it. West Coast Vibes is the latest, and is a full length written in 1963 while Ayers was working in Los Angeles with pianist Jack Wilson. It lead to his first recording contract and is what many believe to be his finest and freest musical expression, with no commercial overtones but plenty of the warmth and colour that he became so well known for. It has all the unique percussion you would expect and is a much more conventional jazz record than he later offered up. Add in the soulful saxophone of Curtis Amy who played along, and you have an essential Ayers record.

Review: Pianist and arrange Joao Donato was pivotal to the development of bossa nova in the 60s, and he worked with a dizzying array of greats from both the Brazilian and US jazz scenes. Amongst his myriad recordings, this particular set from 1963 is a treasure of gently lilting musicality backed up by Milton Banana's lightly brushed drums and Amaury Rodriguez's Afro-Cuban bongo style. If you need an entry point into the world of bossa nova or already love the sound, this album is nothing less than essential listening.
Donald Byrd - "You Gotta Dig It To Dig It" (13:35)
Review: Three Trumpets was recorded in 1957 and released on the New Jazz label. It features the Prestige All Stars led by revered trumpeters Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman and supported by a solid rhythm section of pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Ed Thigpen. This sublime album includes five original compositions, one each by Farmer, Byrd, and O'Brien, and two by Sulieman. While none of the tracks became hits in their own right and with 'Palm Court Alley' being a blues delight, they all offer up dynamic performances and impressive interplay among the brass musicians.

Review: Sit back and relax as you explore the eclectic world of Krzysztof Komeda with this second Naked Lunch release, and one that is dedicated to the legendary sounds of the Polish pianist and composer. This exceptional compilation features Komeda's early works, capturing live and radio recordings from 1957 to 1962. Showcasing four unique lineups-including the Komeda Trio, Quartet, and Sextet, plus a quartet with saxophonist Bernt Rosengren-the album celebrates pioneering jazz in Eastern Europe. These recordings reflect Komeda's search for a synthesis of American jazz influences with a unique Slavic lyricism, offering a glimpse into the creative journey of a true innovator in European jazz history.
