Review: On his latest full-length excursion, British jazzman Nat Birchall has taken the bold move of replacing a piano with a harmonium. The move is reflective of his growing interest in the drone-heavy sound of Indian classical music, with the Harmonium's wheezing, modulating, held-note sound adding an authentically meditative feel to the album's raga-inspired spiritual jazz movements. Naturally, there are harmonium solos, too, and these dizzying, accordion-esque interludes, combined with freestyle drum solos, Birchall's distinctive sax playing and adventurous double bass parts, help to create a genuinely psychedelic and spiritual mood. It's adventurous stuff, but also hugely engaging and entertaining.

Review: For one reason or another, this is Emanative's debut for London's Jazzman imprint, with the artist having touched most other like-minded labels thus far. Better late than never, we say! It also marks Nick Woodmansey's fourth studio album to date, having travelled through Space and Time, and now landing firmly on Earth. As you'd expect, mystique and experimentation are very much a core part of this LP, morphing at every turn, shifting unpredictably amid jazz flutes, deep cello bass, and a supremely sporadic drumming aesthetic that perfectly encapsulates the 'free' element of jazz. The electronics play a part too, however, adding a noticeable aura to an already atmospheric selection of sonic patterns. A beauty, from start to finish.

Review: Raw, unfettered funk from one of LA's hardest working live outfits, Ray Frazier and Shades Of Madness recorded a criminal amount of 45s... One of which - "My Baby's Hand" - regularly fetches the handsome sum of L1000 between collectors. Instantly triggering the biggest northern soul sensations (stomping beats, relentless super-tight grooves, show-stopping splashes of bold soul), this will resonate with, and unite all, funk and soul aficionados across the globe. Highlights include the strident string-led blues riff on the aforementioned "My Baby's Hand", the chop-slapping JB-echoing tightness of "I Who Have Nothing" and the lazier, luxurious swing of "Gonna Get Your Love". Presented as a trio of sweet 45s, Jazzman have curated an exceptional document right here.

Review: Between 1988 and 2000, the shadowy crew behind the Strip label put out six volumes of "Las Vegas Grind", a compilation series celebrating sleazy - and usually undeniably obscure - rhythm and blues, rock and roll and novelty lounge records from the 1950s and '60s. Here the series returns thanks to Jazzman, who somehow managed to to track down the digger responsible - and his eccentric record collection. From skewed surf-rock and low-slung rhythm and blues to comedy big band swing, rousing proto-funk and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" style madcap stompers, the album offers a whirlwind romp through some seriously good - and not to mention especially silly - gems rescued from dollar bins, dumpsters and yard sales the World over. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Review: With the previous four volumes all celebrating the many routes of jazz and its relationship with the western world, Jazzman's fifth Spiritual Jazz volume looks further afield and explores jazz from the rest of the world. From South Africa to Argentina, Jazzman have unearthed tracks that have never before ventured from their country of recorded origin and compiled the album and artist information with the level of detailed documentarianism we've come to expect from them. A truly unique listen, and a kindly reminder that while America may be home to jazz's sturdiest roots, its tendrils reach a lot further.

Review: For the latest volume in their incredible - not to mention essential - "Spiritual Jazz" series, Jazzman has dug deep into the archives of the mighty Blue Note imprint to uncover some of the label's deepest and most spiritually minded releases. There's much to admire on part one (part two is available separately), with highlights including the gentle breeze of Bobby Hutcherson's "Verse", the meandering sax solos, skittish beats and jaunty pianos of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", the string-laden hustle of "Poinsettia" by Andrew Hill, the "Rose Rouge" style grooves and heady chants of Eddie Gale's "The Rain" and the slick vibraphone solos and bold timpani drums of Duke Pearson's "The Phantom".

Review: For the latest instalment in their long-running series chronicling the story of "modal, progressive and esoteric" jazz, the experts at Jazzman Records have turned their attention to the under-appreciated Japanese spiritual jazz scene. While Japan has always had a thriving jazz scene, many of the greatest records have never been released outside of the country, making this double-disc affair (the vinyl version was released in two separate parts) something of an essential purchase. There's certainly plenty to enjoy, from the riotous brilliance of Four Units' fine revolutionary cover of folk standard "Scarborough Fair" (complete with killer drum solos) and the high-octane, rock and Blaxploitation funk-influenced madness of Keitaro Miho's "Kikazaru", to the frenzied free-jazz brilliance of Kiyoshi Sugimoto's "Babalonyian Wind".

Review: 2016: the year the world outside of Belgium finally recognized the cult of popcorn, a subculture that began in Antwerp where soul fans would seek out the rarest and finest big band style soul cuts from the 50s and 60s. Covers, rarities, b-sides... Just like northern soul but the sexier jams. The second big compendium to celebrate the genre this year, Jazzman have curated a fantastic package that ranges from the jazzy swing of Bellino's "Boss Bossa Nova" to the burlesque sultriness and sexy humour of Bobby Hendricks' "I Want That" by way of the really roomy reverberated finish on Johnny Guitar Watson's "Wait A Minute" and Early Grant's organ-blasting twist on "Fever". A great snapshot into a cult scene that resonates with anyone who enjoys soulful music. Pass the popcorn!

Review: Jazzman concludes the ninth volume in its essential "Spiritual Jazz" series with a second deep dive into the unheralded spirituality lurking in the farthest corners of the Blue Note back catalogue. Beginning with the Latin jazz-inspired brilliance of Joe Henderson's "El Barrio", the double vinyl set meanders through a selection of quality cuts, stopping enroute to take in the dreamy vocals of Duke Pearson's peerless ambient-jazz number "Cristo Redentor", dance along to Pete La Roca's spiraling "Malaguena" and get entranced by the dense African drums of Solomon Ilori's epic "Igbesi Aiye (Song Of Praise To God)". The latter track, in particular, is worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Born on the French Island of Martinique, Louis Xavier later settled in France where he discovered the freedom of jazz, and an idea to mix his influences into a global melting pot of sound. He formed his band (Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic Language) in Paris in the early '70s, making music that was both spiritual and eclectic for its time. Both tracks are jazz in essence but with instrumental funky rhythms infused with intricate percussion and electric keys.
