Azimuth - "Manha" (3:45)
Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma - "America Latina" (2:46)
Review: A tale of two sides, Azimuth's classic "Manha" should be recognisable to many; taken from their self-titled LP in 1975, its golden harmonies and lavish, lolloping Bob James style jazz are as timeless as they were 40 years ago. Flip for "America Latina". Conjured by prolific collaborator Osmar Milito (whose discography features the likes of Sammy Davis Jr, Spanky Wilson and Liza Minelli), its striking, sing-along charms are no accident... It was actually created for 70s Brazilian soap opera Selva De Pedra.

I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

It's Hot (reissue)
Cat: AFS 034. Rel: 02 Dec 19
Burnin' Beat (It's Hot) (11:00)
Searchin' (10:21)
Review: It would be fair to say that the Afro Synth label has dug deep for this latest reissue. Little is known about Burnin Beat, an obscure South African disco outfit who released their sole 12", It's Hot, on RPM way back in 1979. They're a great example of an outfit that, for whatever reason, fell through the cracks. The title track, a lolloping, 11-minute disco workout rich in fluid synth lines, rubbery slap bass, sparring instrument solos and the powerful vocals of Olive Masigna, is something of a long-lost gem. Original flipside "Searchin" is almost as good, with Masigna adding a touching vocal to a backing track that pushes the band's favourite Moog synthesizer to the fore.

Review: Jane, Roberto, and Sidey Morais - Brazil's Os Tres Morais - are placed alongside the wonderful Claudia for the latest all Brazilian showdown courtesy of the always point-side Brazil45 series from the Mr. Bongo label. The latter gives us the mythical "Garra", a tune that sits very nicely next to the likes of Marcos Valle and co, and the singing trio get a reissue of 2006's "Freio Aerodinamico", a gorgeous blend of samba, disco, and something perfectly exotic and vintage. Djessou Mory Kante - "Denya" (Ben Gomori edit) (7:30)
Orchestra Baobab - "Sibou Odia" (Ben Gomori edit) (6:40)
Review: The Sterns Edits series, which sees London producer Ben Gomori touch-up and rework gems from the vast catalogue of world music label and distributors Sterns Music, continues to deliver must-have gems. On this seventh installment, he first turns his attention to "Denya" from Djessou Mory Kante's 2014 album "River Strings - Maninka Guitar". Gomori's version is breezy but club-focused, layering Kante's evocative lead guitar and smooth fretless bass atop a gently bouncy Afro-house groove. Arguably even better is his jaunty, life-affirming revision of Senegalese Afro-Cuban band Orchestra Baobab's brilliant but hard to find gem "Sibou Odia", which sees him make merry with punchy horns, glistening guitars and infectious rhythms.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series is like catnip to all collectors of Latin music. It has turned out more than 85 editions that cover all forms of South American soul and funk. This time out it's a is sublime four-tracker from the much loved Brazilian pair of Luli Lucinha e O Bando. It first saw the light of day in 1972 but has long since been lost to the public. Aspects of psychedelic rock, MPB and folk are all stirred dup with the tunes being held together by Luli and Lucinha's vocals. The EP is packed with magic and musical brilliance and also features Brazilian percussionist Alyrio Lima, who was a member of the iconic Weather Report in later years.

Review: Championed by Midland & Bradley Zero to name a couple, here are some fresh cuts for the afro-enthusiastic bass music lovers! O'Flynn's first vinyl release sees him flip around a Calypso drum solo on the A side for a seriously powerful and percussive tune, whilst side B reveals an explosion of African vocal chants and melodic treats. Review: Cuba's Manana Records launches via a fine EP from Obbatuke, a eight-piece rumba outfit fronted by renowned quinto player Carlos Guerra. The band are apparently regulars at the legendary Casa del Caribe in Santiago de Cuba, a venue widely considered to be the beating heart of the Eastern rumba scene. Musically, the five tracks here mix typically high tempo, densely percussive rumba rhythms with chanted vocals. The lack of other musical instruments is startling, but takes nothing away from the tracks. In fact, it only enhances their back-to-basics charms. It proves beyond any doubt that it's the drums that make great dance music.

Mix Zwei (Toulouse Low Trax mix) (7:49)
Sorbe Pekingese (Don't DJ remix) (4:50)
Bunde Dub (Orson dub mix) (4:54)
Review: Last May, Tal released On Mande, the second album from traditional Kenyan combo Ogoya Nengo & The Dodo Women's Group. As the title suggestions, On Mande Versions sees their percussive workouts being remixed by a quartet of electronic music talents. Lena Willikens turns "Orutu Run" into a mid-tempo, tribal techno chugger, while Tolouse Low Trax re-imagines as "Mix Zwei" as a spaced-out Afro-dub masterpiece. Orson's more floor-friendly version of "Bunde Dub" continues on a similarly steppy, bass-heavy tip, leaving Berceuse Heroique regular Don't DJ to steal the show with a thrillingly weird and out-there rework of "Sorbe Pekingese".

Review: Japanese city pop specialist Ohashi Junko was a towering figure from the mid -70s onwards. She was hugely prolific and put out around 15 studio full-lengths that often did very well. Amongst her vast arsenal of hits she also served up this tidy two-tracker which features one single that was only previously available on CD and one off her 1974 album Feeling Now (First Album). Both are soul-drenched nuggets with glistening city-pop production, carefree vocals and silky synth sounds that still have a future sound.

Review: Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy's debut album Mam Yinne Wa was a real triumph. A sensuous fusion of international rhythms, gospel vocals and jubilant vibes that was an instant hit with lovers of world music. His new single is said to be a teaser for a seance upcoming album and is another masterpiece from Frafra Gospe, a legend of this genre. First up is 'Doose Mam,' a repetitive rhythm that goes right for the hips. The big horns bring the character and sensuous vocals are the icing on the cake. On the flip is 'Gure Yose Me,' a tune rooted in reggae rhythms thanks to the work of Josie Coppola, Europe's No.1 reggae drummer.

Wolenche For Chango (4:30)
Review: Leon Michels and Danny Akalepse only set up Big Crown Records this year, but it's been off to a veritable flyer with a slew of cross-format releases that canvas the constellations of soul, funk and international flavours. The latest act to be anointed with the Big Crown are Okonkolo, a band led by Abraham Rodriguez whose soulful voice is the perfect foil for the bata drums and voices soaring through the horns and guitars of Jacob Plasses's production. The musical prayers that make up Okonkolo's debut EP Rezos (Prayers) are some of the most complex and beautiful that any classical tradition has produced. They are also some of the oldest, addressing Obatala, the creator of the world, Ochun, the goddess of love and beauty, and Chango, God of the drum. The beauty and otherworldliness of these prayers endures, the rhythms and chants reimagined in a way that is somehow both ancient and new.

Quem Sabe Quando (5:24)
Mudanca (feat Blair French) (5:23)
Review: Irresistibly groovy manoeuvres from Brazil's Gabriel Oliveria, who was introduced to the world via John Beltran's Sol Set LP. It's only right then, that both sides of this 7" single should effortlessly straddle the sensibilities of Latin and house, driven along by a subtly insistent four to the floor kick drum and a more off kilter double beat on the flip song Quem Sabe Quando. Brazil's bossa tradition is built on its musicians' ability to simultaneously balance the celebratory and the melancholy in their songs, and these two, perfect for sunset or end of season Balearic sets, do just that.

Review: The A7 edits series has been responsible for some of the classiest re-rubs of recent memory, and they're not letting up on this latest 12". First up Ben Gomori has some fun with Oby Onyioha's eternally summery Nigerian hit 'Enjoy Your Life' before Jura Soundsystem bring some serious Balearic boogie flex to Togo icon Afia Mala's 'Koma'. Review: Insanely funky business from Senegal's famous Orchestra Baobab (who are still touring and toiling 40 years later), "Kelen Ati Leen" is a really sweaty, heavy slab of funk that stares west for inspiration and a mild psychedelic Hendrixian sheen. "Souleymane", released three years after the A-side in 1978, takes more of a Latin influence as the horns get steamy over a rigid highlife spine to create a detailed and very physical groove.

Mambo Te Llama
Del Callejon
Review: Orchestra Mambo International pays vibrant tribute to the golden era of mambo with their latest singles, 'Mambo Te Llama' and 'Del Callejon.' Drawing inspiration from the legendary Tito Puente, the band infuses uptempo Latin dance rhythms and punchy brass arrangements reminiscent of the mambo craze that swept the world in the mid-20th century. 'Mambo Te Llama' captures the essence of the genre with its infectious Afro-Cuban rhythms and lively instrumentation. The track features stellar piano, trombone, and conga solos, keeping the flame of mambo alive with its energetic delivery. On 'Del Callejon,' Orchestra Mambo International showcases a slower mambo groove, accompanied by soulful vibes and captivating solos on timbales, trombone, and trumpet. The incorporation of vibes, popularized by Tito Puente and Cal Tjader in the 1950s, adds a classic touch to the composition, paying homage to the mambo vibes style while infusing it with their unique flair. Both tracks, exemplify Orchestra Mambo International's dedication to preserving and revitalising the spirit of mambo music with their fiery performances and authentic homage to the genre's roots.

Through the 1970s, they recorded several singles and EPs for Albarika and a few others, but never completed a full album.Their 1975 45rpm release is exceptionally rare; no copy has surfaced on eBay, nor is it listed on Discogs. Beyond rarity, 'Bakassine Gabou' offers a highly-charged, hypnotic dance track perfect for DJs, while 'Moumouni Bassina Borou Fo' intensifies with layered guitar, vocals, and percussion. Benin's almighty Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey made plenty of it. This latest 45 is another stunner with plenty of raw screams, wails and grunts all adding extra life and vitality to the already trilling guitars and bustling drum rhythms. The Acid Jazz label serves up a couple of such betters here with 'Kpede Do Gbe Houenou' layering up the driving grooves, killer horns and wild keys into something intoxicating. Caramelos (4:15)
Review: Since most probably missed Orkestra Mendoza's 2016 album Vamos A Guarachar - a CD-only romp through floor-friendly Cumbia and Mambo pastures - Boogieburg has decided to issue two of the collection's best tracks on wax. On the A-side you'll find "Cumbia Volcadora", a fuzz-fuelled romp rich in jaunty accordion lines, psychedelic rock style production effects, gentle but heavyweight rhythms and spiraling horn motifs. The band's psychedelic rock influence is even more pronounced on "Caramelos", a kind of Santana style take on Cumbia that also owes some debt to late '60s boogaloo. We guarantee that the chant-along chorus and wild Hammond organ solos will drill their way into your consciousness within 30-seconds pressing play on the sound clip above.

Wisely, their A-side pick is 'Onde Anda O Meu Amore', a cosmic and spacey fusion of samba-soul and jazz-funk rich in ethereal flute lines and intergalactic keys. This time round it comes backed by the equally as impressive 'Gueri Gueri', an insatiable samba-rock number wrapped in heady accordion, jangly acoustic guitar and punchy horn sounds.

Review: Mr Bongo hosts another deeply dug history lesson and we'd all be wise to attend. Here we find Jorge Ben's classic "Carolina Carol Bela" (which many may recognise in sample form from Marky's "LK") covered with psychedelic whimsy by the un-documented Rio band from the late 60s Os Brazoes. Meanwhile on the flip we're introduced to Tim Maia, a man who made his name with tongue-in-cheek off-beat twists on US funk during the late 70s. With its falsetto vocals and tight guitar and bass licks, there are great shades of disco and ESG-style post-funk fusion all wrapped up in a beautiful Brazilian bundle. Lesson over. The band had a long and fruitful career that started in the 60s and ran on into the 80s. This offering is a tune from later on in their time and it is a prime slice of Brazilian boogie with funk drums, vamping chords and hip swinging claps all designed to bring the good ties and the sunny vibes. The bass-driven a-side is the one, but the flip from Sandra Sa is a special kind of sentimental soul sound.

Review: For the latest edition in the label's superb Brazil 45s series, the Mr Bongo crew has decided to reissue one of their all-time favourite tracks, Os Devaneios' 'Embala Differente'. Situated here on side B, the track is one of the funkiest and heaviest samba floor-fillers going - a 1978 workout that adds punchy horns, disco-boogie bass, strong male lead vocals and mazy organ solos to an infectious and percussively dense rhythm track. A-side 'A Beleza E Voce Menina', a slightly later recording, is equally as impressive, with the obscure Brazilian band adding elements of soul, South American boogie and AOR to their funky-as-hell samba template. Review: Samba flavours do not come more authentic than this. The sixth in Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series, here they unearth two foundation pieces from Rio collective Os Origianais Do Samba. Forming in 60s Rio, they're still highly active today and have a discography peppered with Brazilian gold. This 45 does well to showcase their breadth... "La Vem Salgueiro" is quintessential samba. Heavy rhythm, punctuated vocals and a dynamic that leaps from bold and delicate in a flash, it charms you instantly. "Tenha Fe" has a softer soul as it strums and sways and more of a folky sensation, tight harmonies and alluring naked instrumentation.

That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Review: Matsuna keep up their fantastic funk releases with red hot pair of remixes. The a-side is taken care of in competent fashion by Retro Roland's Riso Al Ritmo rework. Originally by Otto De Rojas Y Su Orquesta and released in 1976, it is s summery bit of instrumental groove making, with loose drums and trilling leads that are joined by a nice wandering bassline. The reverse features SoulBrigada on the rework and is a subtly different take that draws out the breakdown and gives extra oomph to the horns. Both are tidy cuts, perfect for glorious weather.

Cat: 337 005. Rel: 25 Oct 24
Oyobi - "The Bottle (El Trago)" (with Kaiman Jimerez - Spanish version) (3:48)
Oyobi - "The Bottle" (with Karen Lee Andrews - English version) (4:42)
Review: Thr33-Thirty Seven Records is the vinyl-only issue of Aussie label Groovescooter, delivering rare, nigh mythical unicorns of the Latin funk-jazz variety, largely on 12". Now welcoming back polyrhythmic electronic music trio Oyobi to the roster with a fresh 7" with two tracks detailed, we're bowled over by this slice of true newness from the lifers. First up is a jubilant buzzer shared with Colombia's finest, pico sound system legend Kaiman Jimenez; 'The Bottle / El Trago' pairs crisp hatwork with two-stepping syncopations and mettalic additions. On the B-side comes an alternate version with Karen Lee Andrews reinterpreting the vox in English, which to us lime-juicers reveals a pensive take on alcoholism. No reason to not get up and dance, though!

Bananeira
Cat: COS 1107. Rel: 25 Jan 16
Emilio Santiago - "Bananeira" (2:52)
Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma - "America Latina" (2:47)
Review: Taken from their impeccable compendium last year - The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul - Cultures Of Soul unleash two of the album's sunniest cuts for a limited 45". Emilio Santiago's "Bananeira" is a rare groove anthem with a slinky, laid back arrangement and classic Brazilian use of language as a percussive tool. Osmar Milito's "America Latina" takes more western influence of the era as we're treated to a soft focus, hazy Bobby Caldwell-style delivery over a slippery jazz groove. Beautiful.

Yen Ni Agoro (2:51)
Wo Nkoa Na Mendo (4:11)
Review: Osei Korankye hails from Accra, Ghana and is a talented musician known as one of his homeland's last remaining seperewa musiciana. These tracks throw it back to the heyday of the sound in 1970 but were recorded in Brooklyn, NY as well as Accra when Korankye linked up with Super Yamba bandleader and drummer Daniel Yount for a few gigs in New York City in 2017. It was an effortless collaboration that resulted in some super psychedelic funk tunes that are designed for carefree dancing.
