Resivior Dogs Vol 1
  1. Big Strick - "Family Affair" (feat Omar S)
  2. Genereation Next - "Windsor Nights"
  3. Reckless Ron Cook - "Night Moves"
  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

  6. Yu Su - "Brittney" (live mix) (8:27)
  7. Adam Pits - "Wind Tunnel" (5:07)
  8. DJ Sports - "Needs Dub" (4:11)
Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Cat: AER 07. Rel: 29 Jul 13
  1. Tomi Chair - "Sunstroke"
  2. Ourra - "Marine Morning"
  3. Miles Sagnia - "Elements"
Review: Miles Sagnia's British bastion of deepness, AER, returns with the LIFE EP, which sees the label foray into fresh territory. Tokyo's Tomi Chair opens proceedings with a sharp piece of deep techno called "Sunstroke" which is as uplifting as it is tough. Si Tappenden appears next under the newly established Ourra alias, contributing the dawn acid driver "Marine Morning" which is an inspired piece of dancefloor poetry. Finally rounding off the Ep is Miles Sagnia's 'Elements'. After years of experience as one of the UK's finest underground DJs, Sagnia is on point once again. A beautifully emotive track, that pulls on the heart strings and exhibits a serene gentility that works alongside the rhythm.

  2. Keraw - "Keutra" (7:24)
  3. Oden & Fatzo - "Titontesttu" (5:53)
  4. Herr Krank - "Fight Your Fears" (6:13)
Review: Lyon might be known as the gastronomical capital of France, but the Undergroove label is doing a fine job of putting the city on the radar of tech house fans. This fourth release is another futuristic trip that kicks off with the punchy drum programming but squelchy synths of Feel the Jam's "UK Breakfast." Keraw gets you in a spin with the quickened and sleek grooves of his "Keutra" then Oden & Fatzo combine to triumphant effect on the high speed tech funk cut that is "Titontesttu" with its gorgeously freeform bassline taking centre stage. Herr Krank's "Fight Your Fears" closes out the adventure with an ever rising acid line that eventually leads to intergalactic tech house lift off. You best strap in!

Review: Benedikt Frey heads this latest offering from the Batti Batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for "Girl From Venus", which pair the former's signature raw drums with the latter's outtakes of muted trumpet. Complementing this, Batti Batti's own Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track "Tribal Roots" and the 12" is further embellished by productions from debutant Lars Behrenroth and Mexican duo Romeo C & Alhan G who have previously been featured on a digital Batti Batti release.

Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

Endless
Endless (7" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: MT 7001. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Endless (4:03)
  2. Purple (4:04)
Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.

Review: GLOW is a team of composers, producer and songwriters who work on solo projects as well as part of various groups, and they have a lush indie soul sound. Their "Ten of Diamonds" featuring the legendary voice of UK soul, Omar, is now revisited and remixed by a crack team of artists. Don-E goes first with a laidback, sun kissed version to make you well up with romantic feels. After an album version and a cosmic tinged, slow motion funk and soul jam known as "Track 3", the ever on point DJ Spinna serves up two fresh versions with jazzy chords and deep soul vibes that take you late into the night.

  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  2. Words Can't Explain (dub) (4:57)
  3. Words Can't Explain (Yu Su remix) (7:03)
Review: Over the last 12 months, Tom Harris AKA Hidden Spheres has proved to be one of the most adaptable producers in the deep house scene. He not only delivered plenty of tropical and dreamy fare via his Fruit Merchant imprint, but also got rough, raw and ragged via an acid and electro-influenced EP on Lobster UNDR. "Words Can't Explain" is another deft change of direction, with honey-voiced guest Oscar Jerome offering a superb soul vocal over a warm and woozy backing track rich in broken house drums, toasty synth bass, drowsy Rhodes chords and effortlessly jazzy guitar solos. It's superb, and one of Harris' best tracks to date. Also worth checking is the club-ready revision by Yu Su, which not only utilizes heavy sub bass but also some crunchy drum machine percussion.

  1. On Again (5:52)
  2. On Again (4/4 dub) (5:05)
  3. On Again (Dubstramental) (6:07)
Review: Listen again to Martin "Atjazz" Iveson's early noughties output and you'll find many rhythmic nods to the then popular West London broken beat scene. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the latest single on the Derby producer's label - a debut from the previously unheralded Marc and Oveous - pays tribute to that sound. While effortlessly deep and soulful (think woozy chords, soulful vocals and Iveson style jazz-funk synth flourishes), the track's most distinctive feature is its' Seiji-esque rhythm track. On the flipside the duo delivers contrasting instrumental takes - a bruk-up "Dubstramental", and a chunky "4/4 Dub" to slip effortlessly in to deep house sets.

  5. Usio - "Galaxy"
Review: Ace London via Glasgow operation Huntleys & Palmers return with a second Chapter, their irregular series of split releases. Whereas the first one issued almost a year ago drew for some crazy club material from artists closely associated with the label, this second edition seeks out contributions from outside talent. Any record that features contributions from both Optimo Music Golden Teacher and Wolf Muller is going to get our seal of approval and both are highlights. The latter opens proceedings with the wonderfully off kilter "Rudeltanz", whilst Golden Teacher's "What Time Is it" comes off like a pitched down Charles Manier cut. Further contributions from Comeme artist Sano, Studio Barnhus act Usio, and Discos Capablanca associate Oklo Gabon will all nice up the dance too!

Review: D. Tiffany presents the third installment in Planet Euphorique's Tiny Planet series, with four choice cuts. First up are Canadian life collaborators Mutually Feeling (Ariana Molly & Pulsum) with the slo-mo hardcore of 'Gutted Honeydew' accompanied by an evocative vocal. Next up, fellow Montrealer Pascale Project brings the totally loved-up vibe of 'Fly Zone' which also features a talented singer. Things take a much darker turn on the flip, with some of the label boss's cohorts from Vancouver taking charge. First is Jodie Overland with the mental overdrive of 'Are You Done Yet?' followed by local minimal wave/industrial duo Sigsaly going out all guns blazing on the hard dance mayhem of 'Carve'.

Review: Having set out their stall via a fine first collaborative release on Bordello a Parigi a couple of months back, Mytron and Ofofo pitch up on Multi-Culti. As you'd expect from a label with such a strong track record of multi-cultural musical fusion, much of the EP defies easy categorization. Sure, you'll find a chunk of Italo-influenced electro ("Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck") and a couple of slabs of madcap disco-funk fusion ("Si Jambo" and "2Tac Onana"), but also a heavyweight slab of low-slung punk-funk/post disco ("Czary Mary"). Oh, and the skewed electro-funk-meets-intergalactic synth pop insanity of "Something for Your Mind", which also boasts some notably brain-melting vocoder action. More, please!

  3. Pyramid (Omar 1:00 am live jam) (6:32)
  4. Too Late For Nonesense (Omar live Out Of Box tool) (6:25)
Review: Indigenous Electronic's second release the "No Market for Emotion" EP pushes further into organic territory with a hardware driven release. The A side sees two tracks on the dubbier end of the spectrum recorded by Iranian producer Ramtin Niazi, a musician with a background in instrumental music, now with a greater focus on machine orientated electronic music. Niazi's contribution sees him delivering two low slung tracks: "Naked Dub" progressing with Lush emotional pads and "Cash Dub" a moodier counterpart. The B side sees the label's head Omar Jayyusi's debut release, with two entirely out the box jams recorded straight to two track. "Pyramid" has a deep and solid rumbling low end, acid basslines and percussive drums. "Too Late for nonsense", is a sub-bass focused micro house dj tool, punchy and reaching the lower end of the dynamic range.

Limited release of x 200 vinyl only without repress.

Cat: RSO 01. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Off Message (8:38)
  2. Night Nurse (7:20)
  3. Porcupine Groove (7:27)
Review: Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier 'Night Nurse' boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while 'Porcupine Grove' is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.

Review: After they last shared wax on Mosaic back in 2017, UK dub techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan and prolific minimal house rising star Frazer Campbell link up once again for the sleek and sophisticated sounds of "Straight To The Source". It's a shuffling, funky workout with understated b-lines to suck you in and subtle splashes of reverb to shape out a heady atmosphere. "Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle)" on the flip has a more bubbling, psychedelic quality to it, without losing that cool Mosaic veneer that makes these joints so workable in so many different situations.

  2. Steve O'Sullivan - "Touch Up" (8:35)
  3. Steve O'Sullivan & John Beer - "Breezer" (6:45)
  4. Blue Spirit - "No Suzuki" (5:52)
  5. The Wise Caucasian - "Sac Magique" (6:03)
Review: As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere III
  1. Steve O'Sullivan - "Paracelsus"
  2. Steve O'Sullivan - "Paracelsus" (Alchemy mix)
  3. Two Lone Swordsmen - "Felt Under Pressure"
  4. Matt Chester - "Never See Us"
Review: Sushitech boss Yossi Amoyal continues to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his label with the impeccably curated Fluere compilation series. A hefty salvo of classic and forgotten tracks have been remastered and pressed up, and there's another four such delights on here. Steve O'Sullivan gets the run of the A side with the rich, dynamic techno jam 'Paracelsus' in its original form and the stripped back 'Alchemy Mix'. Seriously deep Two Lone Swordsmen cut 'Felt Under Pressure' kicks off the B-side, still sounding like the future 21 years after it originally came out. Matt Chester's 'Never See Us' equally reaches stratospheric heights with the kind of electro that remains untouchable after all this time.

Review: FXHE return with the master of the mysterious OB Ignitt! Arriving roughly a year on from the last slab of Ignitt goodness, Mysterious finds OB on imperious form, once more showing off his penchant for excellent track titles and singular slant on bumping Detroit business. The title track is a veritable epic of unquantifiable emotive stakes, emerging from a heat treated fog and easing into a subtle yet beguiling rhythmic framework which coaxes you into a spell that grows stronger as the track charges electrically forth. Face down, "Celestial Salacious" has that same rough edged bass line growl to it, but the skipping percussion and building layers of instrumentation give the track real energy, whilst you can almost feel the funk dripping off final track "Chocolate City" which sounds like DJ Nature hocked up on MDMA.
