Wosto/Kilian Krings Edits EP

New Asia - "Chant For Running" (Wosto edit) (4:11)
L'Eponge Synthetique - "Collection D'Ombres Subtiles" (Kilian Krings edit) (4:52)
Review: For German retroverts Sign Bit Zero, it's "all about the expression of hate, despair, pain, waste, destruction, tristesse and misanthropic in art and music!" and that's good enough for us, really! On offer here are five noisy reinterpretations of some serious industrial unclassics. Hamburg's Wosto (of Fallbeil) takes the razor to UK pioneers Nocturnal Emissions and the raw tonal energy of "Bite Them Back". Label boss Kilian Krings appears also, delivering an edit of vintage EBM classic "Nervous Breakdown" by Suicide Commando and also for short lived Dutch trio S.M. Nurse and their grinding minimal synth anthem "Heinwerker". Some great edits on here for the new industrialists.

DVA Damas - "Shortcut To X" (4:01)
Review: We were wondering what Regis' Downwards stable was planning for 2017, but it's clear that the UK techno lynchpin has absolutely everything under control. The year kicks off with a collaborative EP, The Immortal Eye, featuring a special selection of artists whose sounds only tinker with the techno formula, and which will undoubtedly appeal to a whole spectrum of electronic music enthusiasts. Jan Grebenstein and Christine Seefried, the former having already appeared for the label recently, team up on "Wufferfraction", a mid-tempo roller that ticks along at a steady pace amid a sea of electrifying acid sonics, while fellow recent signee Layne delivers a noxious cloud of rhythmic ambient through "Love". On the B-side, the Autumns outfit offer a cold, bleak, pseudo techno groove on "Imposter Syndrome", leaving the excellent DVA Damas to coax the cold out of the wave thanks to an excellent tune by the name of "Shortcut To X". Recommended.

Review: It's pretty hard not to fall in love with Macadam Mambo at first contact. The French label represents the cream of Lyon's underground, a city that has for some time now been a quiet powerhouse of electronic and dance music, developing a reputation for strange, leftfield floor-filling sounds spanning slow burn chug, experimental tropicalism, Balearic and cosmic house.

Enter Axel Larson to prove our point with real precision. L'Ete Noir is an incredible EP, packing a generous six tracks on its wax, all of which are awesome. From the knife-edge atmosphere of poised and percussive rumbler 'Hygiene Du Squelette', to the downtempo joy of a track that feels like it's built largely on the sounds of dripping water and reversed rave keys ('Le Pyromane Du Chateau Rouge'), there are so many layers here you'll be busy for days.

Review: Uwe Schmidt's mammoth artistic stamp has left an indelible mark on electronic music since he first emerged in the 80s as a DIY industrial artist in Frankfurt. His complex, many-sided career has been documented in a new book, AtomTM, the nonconformist virtuoso, which is being bolstered by this mini-compilation from Industrial Complexx and Fill-Lex. The A-side is focused on Schmidt's early work as Lassigue Bendthaus, where he responded to the emergent industrial and EBM phenomenon with a high-definition sound which ranks among the best music of the era. The three tracks sound as relevant today as they were futuristic when originally released. Meanwhile the B-side features two of his most daring works as AtomTM, originally released as The OvercomEP as a digital release in 2022. These angular, experimental studies serve as a neat demonstration of just one place his music has ended up across an accomplished career.

This is the fifth Untitled transmission which follows 12"s from Shifted and Felix K aliases Delete Everything and Stone Edge, Felix K's //no collaboration with German drum and bass engineer Martsman, and the yet to be revealed Meze. The Late Echo Express name debuts with three ambient drum and bass cuts that sound like a haunted steam works. "Track 1" floats through a ghoulish world of steely dub-atmospherics, metallic drones in "Track 2" are petted by pitter-pattering percussion and q searching sonar blip, while "Track 3" is a low-end swaying movement of industrial textures. Review: Having already issued a fine debut album for the Editions Mego label this year, Swedish artist Klara Lewis serves further notice of her clear talent for power electronics and expertly sculpted sonic design with this four track release on Peder Mannerfelt Produktion. Msuic "I", "II", "III" and "IV" follow a similarly gloomy path to her album, where cavernous walls of noise erupt from every angle only to be swallowed back into a long tunnel of atmospherics and grey-scaled ambience. The fourth segment is particularly enticing, where Lewis blends field recordings together with flutters of distant, sinister horns and more tranquil soundscapes.

Plutonium (4:03)
Review: Bologna crew Alley Version return with a new 12", this time welcoming Richard Smith in his scintillating L/F/D/M guise. Smith has more than proven himself as a techno outlier par excellence, and so it continues on this gnarled and knotted batch of tracks. For all the lo-fi crunch, there's vitality and verve spilling out of all these tracks, especially the artfully messy "Flats". "Lemon Sunrise" is more decidedly unhinged, and "Plutonium" takes a slow and suffocating glide through freaky soundscapes teetering between the netherworld and the sunkissed boulevard. For DJs looking for the most club impact, "Blank Cheque" is the one though - a dishevelled banger for disjointed souls.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: After appearing on Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder with the fiercely infectious "It's Alive!" 12", L.F.T. lands on Eye For An Eye with more gutter-bound sonics from the grungiest corners of the electro scene. There's as much noirish seduction as gnarly distortion going on throughout this deadly record, from the soundtrack steer of "Atomic Enigma" to the brittle minimal wave delights of the title track. Super punky and lo-fi in all the right places, this 12" once again confirms L.F.T. is one of the strongest voices dealing in DIY electro from the darkside.

Review: L.F.T. lands on Pinkman with a six-tracker of conceptual electro and dungeon synth, aimed squarely at the dancefloor. 'Electric Vampire' is the contemporary counterpart to Nosferatu; rather than transforming into a bat, this hematophagic harpy has no problem traversing the fibre-optic cables and electric wiring that make up our telecoms and wi-fi systems. The idea of an electric vampire, a version of the 'energy vampire' trope that pervades folk consciousness at the moment, likewise pervades the six tracks on this blood-boiler. The EP mutates progressively into more and more grotesque forms; by the time we reach track five, 'Demonic Toys', we're deep into the blood sacrifice, having lost fourteen pints, provided nothing resembling a tourniquet. How could you possibly stem this badboy record's flow?.

Review: As part of longstanding no wave duo Naked On The Vague, murky girl group Knitted Abyss and extraterrestrial drone project Half High, Lucy Phelan has been a critical force in the Sydney DIY scene for over 10 years. Under the solo veil of Lucy Cliche, she annihilates with these four wavey techno tracks that honour her noise and punk ethos. With pounding drum sequences, draining synths and emotionless vocals echoing Cosey Fanni Tutti, her dark dreams sabotage our calculations of modern dance while demonstrating how physicality and the ethereal can interact.

Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Vereker - "Bedroom Jihad"
Review: Oliver Vereker made his debut last March with two decidedly robust 12" singles on the mighty L.I.E.S. Having followed it up with more hard-as-nails excursions on Russian Torrent Versions and The Trilogy Tapes, Vereker now pops up on Berceuse Heroique with more nightmarish visions of a dystopian, post apocalyptic future. Lead cut "Flesh & Blood" is clearly the most floor-friendly of the bunch, offering surging techno rhythms overlaid with clanking percussion and little else. It's stark but strangely attractive. Low Jack hook-up "Event Horizon" flips the script, offering a beatless saunter through drone pastures, while "Bedroom Jihad" offers intense white noise, barely audible vocal samples and intense atmospherics.

Review: Perhaps the most minimal Spectrum Spools release to date, The Sincere Interruption is Eric Lanham's first release under his own name after several ears of performing as Carl Calm and Palmetto Moon Electronic Group. Recalling the precision of early 00s Mille Plateaux and Raster-Noton, The Sincere Interruption clicks with glitches that sound like scrambled MP3 fragments, albeit held together with an invisible matrix beneath. Repetitive, yet imperceptibly evolving, this is a highly rewarding listen.

Review: Liaisons Dangereuses self-titled debut album was not an immediate success on its' release in 1981, but its' influence would spread far and wide. Almost entirely made up of synthesized rhythms, chords and melodies - with the addition of stylish vocals from all three band members - it would help define the "electronic body music sound". It quickly became a big record in both Detroit and Chicago, inadvertently helping to inspire the nascent techno and house scenes. Listening again to this reissue, it's amazing how well the music as aged. While heavy on stylish posturing, it still sounds thrillingly futuristic and alien. It should be an essential purchase for anyone with even the smallest interest in the history and development of electronic music.

Review: Life Garden was formed in Phoenix, Arizona during the fall of 1989 by George Dillon, Su Ling and W. David Oliphant. The group was the reinvention of post-industrial band Maybe Mental (1982-1987) and delved into an ineffable territory where language failed, their music found root. Each release was loosely guided by one member, caught between the Tapestry of Silence and Beauty (1991) was focused towards the poetry and vocals of George Dillon who sadly passed away after the completion of the album. During this period the band began to shift from using synths and samplers to an all acoustic approach. Over several months, Su Ling and David developed a unique improvisational style using digital multi-effects and loopers to process Su's vocals and a variety of percussion, string and wind instruments. This became the foundation of the LG sound and is heard thoughout this LP.

Review: Peter Van Bogaert, also known as Liquid G by his diehard fans, is one of Belgium's most important industrial artists. The man has been releasing gruesome electronic cassettes since the mid 1980's, but while he has always been a digger's heaven, his output has remained largely in the shadows to the rest of the world. Luckily, Dark Entries are here to save the day as always, and compile some of his best and rarest work on an LP. Proto-techno wouldn't really do these tracks justice as they're actually much more than that. Ranging from jacking post-punk instrumentals, to starry synth jams and lamenting vocals, this is surely up any emo kid's alley. "Self Destruction" sounds particularly ahead of its time, and it's surely one to check out!

Review: An intriguing release from Trensmat here as Russian pair Love Cult collaborate with Gnod's Druss on Yr Problems. Hopefully you know Petrozavodsk-based duo Anya Kuts and Ivan Afanasyev from their excellent Love Cult LP for Public Information that combined radiophonic textures and Russian folk motifs into a chillingly radioactive whole, which makes them like minded allies to Druss, a member of Salford-based krautrock-inspired band Gnod, whose solo productions cross into dark electronic territory with a similarly caustic atmosphere. The eight-track Yr Problems LP has the two acts contribute a pair of tracks under their own names each, and four collaborative tracks under the Love Cult Take Druss moniker. As you might expect, there's a foreboding sense that runs through much of this LP, as if seasick on sound waves. Wonderfully uneasy listening!

Review: After debuting on Clement Meyer's Get The Curse label in late 2012 with the Slow Dance EP, Parisian producer Low Jack has gradually been drawn to the darker hues of the techno spectrum. Following releases for Delsin and In Paradisum, Low Jack now presents his most high-profile - and most experimental - release to date, with Garifuna Variations on L.I.E.S. The genesis of Garifuna Variations dates back to last summer when Low Jack was commissioned to participate in a live performance by Parisian museum Quai Branly. Invited to use the institution's vast library of music, Low Jack based his live set around recordings of the Garifuna people of Honduras, and despite him having no plans to use the music beyond the performance a live recording subsequently piqued the interest of L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli. Coaxed into recreating the performance at his studio, the results are described by the label as "rhythmic, tense, and hypnotic electronic music that lives in a grey area many are unwilling to step into."

Review: Abdulla Rashim doesn't only endeavour in gloopy, stripped-down techno, and likes to take the occasional excursion down more abstract paths. His Lundin Oil moniker serves exactly this purpose, and much like his aforementioned main project, this is ambient with a highly personal and altruistic touch. While many of his peers produce hollow, sunken drones without a lot of direction, even Rashim's most detached patterns retain enough shape to render them playable to other human beings, and full of kinetic motion. Between The Shields has to be his best work yet under the Lundin Oil name, and it's an LP that'll appeal to noise freaks and techno heads alike, with the industrial weirdos bang in the middle enjoying every minute of it. Recommended wholeheartedly.

Review: It's fairly hard to keep tabs on all the various artists and projects that make up the bewildering Hospital Productions discography, but along with Dominick Fernow's own material one of the few label constants is Lussuria. Since first appearing on the label with the Silk & Honey cassette some four years ago, the elusive Lussuria has gone on to contribute a further eight cross format releases to the Hospital cause, all of which roughly operate in the dark ambient and industrial-influenced end of the spectrum. Industriale Illuminato is Lussuria's second LP for Hospital yet his first to be conceived as a standalone piece (2012's American Babylon LP compiled three cassette releases) and is apparently inspired by Deconstructionism and "an overriding sense of anxiety". Investigate if you are a fan of Demdike Stare's cultish Tryptych releases!

Review: Recorded live in 2008, Venexia is a meeting of the electronic - provided by ex-Pan Sonic wizard Mika Vainio and Kevin Drumm - and the acoustic - provided by avant-garde jazz player Axel Dorner and Argentinean saxophonist Lucio Capece. The interplay between searing, industrial sonics and delicate textures is particularly daring, and the fact the performance was captured live only adds to the sense of wonder - especially given the microscopic particles of sound which evaporate from the sounds contained on the record. As ever with PAN, the sleeve art is exemplary, with printed inner sleeve contained within a silk-screened PVC jacket.
