Starfist Lazerbeam
Passion Of A Night
Review: The Jungle referencing Valley Of The Shadows series from Hague outpost Creme Organization was launched earlier this year with the aim of halting some of the fragmentation that afflicts the underground. Given this first 12" has experienced severe pressing delays, maybe the underground should crowd source the financing of some fresh vinyl pressing plants? Regardless of that VOTS001 finds Creme joining forces with their Amsterdam-based compadres to present a two track transmission from 2AMFM, aka Nation pair Tadd Mullinix and D'Marc Cantu. The tumbling Axel F goes Jakbeat vibes of "Starfist Lazerbeam" are particularly good here! Watch out for future collaborations with LIES and upstarts Berceuse Heroique.

Underground Warriors EP Part 1

Alex Agore - "Stalker"
Fabio Monesi - "Momma' Groove"
Washerman - "Just A Moody Guy"
Luca Ballerini - "X Track"
Review: The newly minted Wilson imprint come brandishing a steadfastly enthusiastic keep vinyl alive approach, warning people on their site to "play it on vinyl or don't play it" and their debut release shows an equal respect for the true production values founded in Chicago and Detroit. The Underground Warriors EP pairs the old and trusted with the new and exciting as respected producers Alex Agore and Washerman share space with the upcoming Italian duo Fabio Monesi and Luca Ballerini. Naturally the contributions from the Berlin dwelling Agore and Swiss producer Washerman demonstrate a clear level of accomplishment, with the former's "Stalker" dripping with emotive intent. Don't discount the tracks from the lesser known duo however with "Momma' Groove" from Monesi an excellent drum machine workout complemented by oven warm pads.

Heedron (original mix)
Heedron (Kriece remix)
Heedron (Dave Robertson remix)
Review: Following up his Zabiela & Jeff Bennett collaboration, Kriece's imprint is back with another all star cast for the third installment. This slice of tech fused house comes compliments of Australia's Dave Basek and Ed Function (Together to be known as Fo-Sek). The original mix shapes up in a neat fashion with tech-house style percussion along with glitching sounds underneath, creeping out from behind an effected vocal. Bassline is added, picking up the pace as warbling, organic synths begin to work off each other and creating an upbeat groove, tweaked in places while reversed sounds lead the way throughout the laid back flow. The first of two retakes is a Kriece remix, reshaping things into a rolling mix of clackety rhythms and deep, acidic sub sounds gradually resonating along with scary vocal cuts to get inside our heads. The production is tight and to the point in its delivery of a moodier interpretation. Finishing things up is superb Dave Robertson remix, twisting the original's elements into a murmuring, spluttery tech house edit, and adding some enticing chord stabs into the dark, skippy vibe. Sweet!

Review: A well balanced mix of newcomers and established artists getting together to throw down some funk. Blacksoul teams up with newcomer, Musical Globe, for a slice of disco heaven that is all about a wicked break. Sleazy McQueen drops a funk bomb on us, chopping up the samples just right and then killing it with that old school rap. Fabio Bacchini channels Chicago via Italy and works a classic sample, while Tom Collins is back and with a vengeance.

Facade - "Transit" (9:26)
Review: London Housing Trust return with a nine installment of their no nonsense 12" series featuring cuts from Jamie Blanco, Fx Mchn, Facade and Late Night Audio. Calling shotgun in Jamie Blanco, whose productions have featured on the majority of LHT releases thus far and "Unknown Reason" is a fine lead track, all warm cascading basslines, bubbling synth touches (that occasionally sound like dolphins) and loose drums. Its classic house produced with modern clarity. Fx Mchn deviates into more abstract territory with the skittering, bass heavy beat down of "UFOD", whilst Late Night Audio opt for a more classicist vocal house bump with "Live For The Music". It's left to Facade to drop the tempo again with the wonderfully laid back "Transit". Another great 12" from the Trust!

BLM - "My Sound Tool"
Flori - "Red Rectangle"
James Johnston - "Lights Off"
Review: Since launching at the tail end of 2011, the Black Key label has proved itself to be a solid destination for those seeking high-grade deep house. Here, they showcase the work of a trio of 'friends of the family'. BLM opens proceedings with "My Sound Tool", a fluid chunk of eyes-wide-shut deepness containing just the right amount of bump. James Johnston's "Lights Off" is typical of his recent atmospheric outings, and matches the loose fluidity of BLM's opener. Best of all, though, is Flori's "Red Rectangle", a Larry Heard-ish chunk of classic Chicago deepness with just a hint of classic analogue shuffle.

Review: Blue Mondays are a Mantua based project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani with singer Francesco Sperotto aka Kaysand (who got his start with deep house band Grammophono), on another fine EP for their eponymous imprint. First up is the deep down and dirty electro house of "Stop" featuring gritty synth arpeggios, dusty drums and sleazy vocals. The legendary Robert Owens should need no introduction, as do legendary British duo Justin Harris & Luke Solomon aka Freaks; whose brilliant "Right Now" appears in the form of a "Blue Mondays Tfbm mix" while the legendary Swayzak's version of "Stop" is an epic hypnotic techno journey over its full 13 minutes duration.

Borai - "The Rejection"
Deep88 - "Works"
Oliver Deutschmann - "Straight Up My All"
Freestyle Man - "Give It To Me"
Review: It's been a while since we heard anything from Bristol's best dressed chicken in town Borai, so it's great to see him leading the way on this second edition of the Jackoff Beats series from Berlin label Jackoff Records. Indeed this is Boris English's second contribution to the series, having appeared on last year's inaugural 12" alongside Iron Curtis and Oli Deutschmann. "The Rejection" demonstrate's Borai's lost none of his production verve for emotionally loaded house music and sets a high bar for what follows. Deep88 rolls deep on a lo fi filtered disco flex with the excellent "Works" whilst Oliver Deutchsmann also maintains his 100% Jackoff Beats appearance record with the stripped down acid burner "Straight Up My All". A welcoming titular vocal hook is the key element around which the Freestyle Man lays down a classic dusty house groove on the closing "Give It To Me".

Lessizmore 10 Years - Forever Never More
Borrowed Identity - "Cambio"
San Proper - "Handbreakturn"
Dave Aju - "Get It"
Frivolous - "Little Devils"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Borrowed Identity kicks off the second EP with a smoothly rendered vision of contemporary deep house housing a poignant message at its core, while San Proper follows it up with his irrepressible personality positively leaping out of the track in a fit of live instrumentation and unbridled psychedelic funk. Dave Aju too is an artist it's hard to mistake, his cool and deadly vocals sitting amongst a sleek club construction that ranks among his most DJ-ready tracks to date. Always a trusted source of unconventional magic both in the studio and on the stage, Frivolous is on hand to demonstrate how to be playful with wild sound design and still come out with a killer party track.

DJ Duke Presents: The Chicago Legends
Roy Davis Jr - "I'm Hungry" (DJ Duke edit)
Spank Spank - "Jam Session" (DJ Duke edit)
Felix Da Housecat - "Jupiter Song" (DJ Duke edit)
DJ Pierre & Maurice - "Let It Go" (DJ Duke edit)
Review: The idea behind this EP is deliciously simple: veteran New York producer DJ Duke re-edits a bunch of lesser-known Chicago house classics from the Wild Pitch era. Happily, the execution is just right, resulting in a particularly playable set of DJ tools. Felix Da Housecat's 1994 cut "Jupiter Song" is turned into a hypnotic chunk of intergalactic deep house, while DJ Pierre and Maurice's "Let It Go" - baggy and loose, with rolling chords and tasty vocal hits - is expertly extended to emphasise the groove. While Duke's edit of Spank Spank's vibraphone-laden "Jam Session" is enjoyable, the real killer is his version of Roy Davis Jnr's piano laden "I'm Hungry". It retains the positive spirit of the original while adding an element of tracky toughness.

Review: Spain's Luvdancin label is notorious for releasing new and exciting talent in the house game, and they've done it again with this latest collaborative effort from four rising producers. Deepah calls the shots on the A1 - the man is a young house maverick from France - and delivers a Detroit-flavoured house twister in the for of "Ahh, Come On"; the lesser known Folamour also indulges in some quality, laid-back deep house on "Brothers Since The First Day". Bravik - "130314" (Fred P reshape) (7:48)
Review: Dept. is a Helsinki based, newly found record label and music collective. Their VA1 contains originals by Dept. regulars, Denzel and Bravik supported with remixes from Satoi and the legendary electronic music pioneer, Fred P.

Denzel's "About Greatness" exhibits classic house vibes infused with a modern approach utilising a rich palette of rhythms, pads and a monologue which guides the listener through the track. Satoi's remix pushes the original towards a technoish form with a more straightforward and darker yet melodic take.

In contrast Bravik's track "130314" is a summerish and monotonic, uptempo stomper which contains a finely refined contrast between the distorted rhythms, sub bass and synth stabs. In the reshape Fred P has traditionally taken the track to a completely new path by tweaking the original elements to an unrecognisable state, creating an atmospheric and funk-esque house track.

Dept. VA1 is an intriguing combination in the best possible way.

The pair's work together first surfaced in the shape of "Dark", an abstract, skeletal beat track Four Tet included on his Essential mix with Jimmy Jamie xx last year. Alongside Fleetwood Smack he drops the crazily funky vocal jam "Do 2 U," while his remix of Conga Squad's "Live At K-Market" brings a little fidget-esque hype into the mix. Review: Local Talk's 1nce Again reissue sublabel returns with the focus this time on DJ Duke, and the track "Closer", originally released in 1994 on Duke's Power Music Records. A long-time favourite of Local Talk's Mad Mats, the original Klubb Kidz flavour dub finds itself on this 12", a still impressive slice of 90s house which shows the imitators how its done. More exciting still are the remixes from esteemed Stockholm DJ and Parkway Records boss Mark Seven; his "So Close" strips everything back but the deep organ tones and the bold vocal, while the masterful "Stalker Mix" succeeds in delivering a more after hours cut with a shimmering disco arp placed squarely in the foreground.

Nate Williams - "Klimax" (DJ Duke edit - Roy Davis Jr remix)
Review: Following the success of DJ Duke's first tribute to the pioneers of Chicago house, the Windy City veteran returns here with another trawl through the archives. As with the first 12", all four tracks on The Chicago Legends Volume 2 have been re-edited by the Power Music boss. Naturally, there's much to get excited about, from the acid-flecked techno thump of Black Tribe's locked-in roller "100 Percent Trackin", to the Virgo Four style acid-meets-deep house brilliance of Felix Da Housecat's "I Found Her" (originally released way back in 1994). The EP also contains two brilliantly classic-sounding productions, with Duke delivering a particularly successful re-edit of Roy Davis Jnr's glassy-eyed, piano-laden, 1995 remix of Nate Williams' "Klimax".

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

Domy - "Dance"
Domy - "Dance" (Sante remix)
Felipe Venegas - "Ozinaga" (Tribute to Walter Ozinaga)
Butch - "Now You Know"
Review: Amir and Butch’s Mainz based label, Bouq has built a reputation for delivering quality groove based house and techno since its formation in 2009. Fun is the staple ingredient in their releases and Bouq Family & Friends Part 2 is no different, arriving just in time to soundtrack endless summer parties out in the sunshine.

Bouq has been rather quiet of late, somewhat surprising considering the strength of their first year in business. They have been busy though, just it has been slightly more under the radar. In addition to gigs throughout Germany, label top dogs Amir, Butch and Sebastian Lutz have also released a number of solo efforts. But now, the label returns to follow up on Part 1 which dropped to much acclaim at the end of last summer.

Opening the release is Cadenza star, Felipe Venegas drops the warm and friendly sounding "Ozinaga." A simple beat is joined by a deep infectious groove and some warm synth stabs that create an altogether pleasant and easy vibe. The track is actually dedicated to Felipe’s friend Walter Ozinaga who passed away earlier this year. Domy is next up with his debut, "Dance." Again crafted with a warm and contented sentiment, this track is deliriously groovy, fusing a monster bass, driving highs and a soulful and emotive female vocal. It’s shuffling percussion gives it even more of a sun-tinted glow, perfect for outdoors. Berlin based Santé delivers a tech house remix to close proceedings. Having produced for Rekids and Souvenir already, Santé brings his accomplished sound to Bouq for this special remix. Stripping the original down, he turns "Dance" into a club orientated track whilst still keeping all the groove, and more importantly all the fun.

What has set Bouq apart from the rest so far has been its ability to bring quality and respected music combined with emotion, fun and feeling. Family & Friends Part 2 does exactly that, telling the next chapter of Bouq’s story in its own endearing style.

Review: With our heads are still ringing from that superb Downbeat transmission from Marcellus Pittman earlier this year, the lesser spotted Downbeat Black Label return with a rare and equally bugged out drop. There's only been two Black Label releases before, the first had Juju & Jordash at the helm and the last saw Vakula behind the buttons, this time it's label founders Jose Rico, Urtzi and F-on taking care of business. Rico and Urtzi combine as Downbeat for "Moskitos En Siberia" a drawn out excursion into a barren soundscape of spectral vocals, slack jawed percussion and unnerving tones. "Smog" by F-on is no less eerie, bringing to mind some of the more ghostly ambient moments on Demdike Stare's Voices Of Dust.

Review: A bunch of bubbling UK Deep House players line up on Introducing Newington, a new label of the same name that is clearly fond of the N16 postcode with vocal house on the menu. Ejeca, the Irishman earmarked as the 'next Bicep', keeps up his relentless form this year with the opening track "Robodrum" which is a playful shuffling little house number that rotates between stabbing vocal samples and piercing chords. Moving south of the Irish border, Dublin based Frank B kills it with "Trieste" a wonderfully warp cut that sounds like it's been recovered from a dust filled DAT tape. London types Jack Fell Down take a cleaner, but no less infectious approach on "For You" whilst Midlands type Tom Flynn rounds it out with the deep and bouncy "Going On".

As ever with Sofrito, there's a sense of music education that comes with this record as the label shines the light on Gwo Ka - the folkloric rhythm of Guadeloupe - and one of its greatest voices in Esnard Boisdur. The focus here is Bosidur's 1991 track "Soufwans" (which translates as Sufferance for those not au fait with Guadeloupian) which in the hands of Francis and Simbad is flipped into a hypnotic house production replete with deep bassline and some killer synths. Here, he once again teams up with regular sidekick Flori for a first outing on Fear of Flying. As usual, there's much to admire across the two tracks. "The Last Ninja" is particularly enjoyable, sounding like a long lost Detroit techno classic after a night on anti-depressants - all rolling rhythms, fizzing cymbals, fluid riffs and sun-bright melodies. "Fornjot" flips the script slightly but keeps the positivity factor high, thanks in no small part to some loose-but-loopy synth refrains and an unfussy, kick-heavy groove.

We can add to this list Ethyl & Flori, a long standing production partnership that has always stood for quality, whose 3 track Transcripts 12" shows the pair at their most diverse. Review: In it's brief history to date, the London Housing Trust label has been responsible for facilitating some superbly strange dancefloor material for the more adventurous selectors out there ("Jackie" by fx mchn remains a favourite around here) This 7th release is as good as any of the previous transmissions, commencing with a great little tool from label regular Facade called "Vimanas" which oscillates confidently between jack, strut and chug. The unheralded Lukebox leaves us wanting more with the resplendent deep house sheen of "Barrito" whilst Norwegian producer Telephones continues to boss 2014 with the equally charming "Spring Wave". LHT stalwart Alphonse ends matters on a high with a brilliant Maurice Fulton esque remix of "Black Dam" by Mind Games.

How You Say (Invisible Conga People remix)
How You Say (Daniel Avery remix)
Review: DFA have pulled out all the stops here, with no less than three remix 12" editions of Factory Floor single "How You Say" planned for imminent release. This being James Murphy's label, the standard of remixers is second to none on each with the first featuring Daniel Avery and Invisible Conga Band. Young Daniel scaled back his remix commitments last year to focus on his widely praised debut album, but when Factory Floor come calling you don't say no. In Avery's hands "How You Say" is transformed into a wonderfully laid back slice of warm techno with the insistent throb of the bassline offset by the manner in which Nik Void's vocal and the smoggy chords resonate. It's great to see Invisible Conga People back on a DFA record too, with their version even more horizontal!

How You Say (Gunnar Haslam remix)
How You Say (Helena Hauff remix)
Review: Frustrated keyboard heroes of the internet beware! Helena Hauff is among a cadre of high-profile names tasked with remixing Factory Floor's new single "How You Say" across three separate 12"s, sharing space here with mystery LIES artist Gunnar Haslam. If you indulged in Hauff's Panzerkreuz debut Return To Disorder recently, you'll know what to expect from her maiden remix with mere remnants of Void's hushed vocals remaining as the Pudel resident largely focuses on embellishing the track's more serrated qualities whilst adding some kick drums that feels like a snapping punch to the jaw. Gunnar Haslam's contribution is worth investigating too, as the New Yorker draws out some truly strange sounds to form a techno production that has a truly tangible metallic finish.

How You Say (Bookworms remix 2)
Review: The third and final remix 12" for Factory Floor's How You Say single campaign finds LIES and Confused House don Bookworms contribute two contrasting efforts. The story from DFA goes that Nik Dawson submitted two remixes after being commissioned along with Helena Hauff, Dan Avery, Gunnar Haslam and Invisible Conga People and the label were so impressed with both they decided to grant Bookworms his own 12" release. The first remix pulsates and throbs in a wholly satisfying manner whilst the piston style drums lend the production a real actual industrial edge, whilst the second more relentless remix places more emphasis on creating a thick analogue groove that binds everything together.

Review: Bang! DFA slip out a brand new slab from Factory Floor, Nik Void and Gabe Gurnsey's first tangible release in well over a year. Dominic Butler may well have departed to explore some orally-fixated rhythmic projects with L/F/D/M, but Factory Floor remain a very potent proposition with Void and Gurnsey at the controls as Dial Me In ably proves. Bubbling 303 lines, industrial percussion and robotic, dead pan vocal parts meet on the title cut, with DFA smartly comparing it to the meeting point between Chris & Cosey, Phuture and Paranoid London. A subsequent club mix does what it says on the tin, whilst "Work It Out" sees a little of the playful devil in Factory Floor rear its head with superb results.

Review: House Crime bounce back into the mix following the utterly essential Steven BC release with this sixth jaunt through tough and rough beats from the backalley of the house music story, this time narrated by Anthony Fade. The drums are dirty distorted machine splatters, the synths wobble under the weight of their own fuzziness and the samples crunch like they fell prey to the ropiest of MPCs, and that's precisely why Fade's jams are so damn hot. "Wild 9 (Acid Mix)" is especially potent, using a simple but deadly 303 line and all kinds of hectic textures, and "Bout It" manages to make melodic deep sound as mean and nasty as it ever should.

Review: While they may have landed a fair while ago, it's great to see Emotional Response revisit Timothy J Fairplay's crucial early EPs with an absolutely on point remix package. Scientific Dreamz Of U brings his distinctive signal chain to "Stories Of Prison", using grinding synths and some snaking broken beats to create an early 90s trance mood to die for. Alessandro Parisi keeps things on a distinctly new wave tip for "Aim For The Yellow Sector", and Perseus Traxx brings a bold set of machine beats and technicolour synths to "Saco Bay". Antenna finishes the EP off by creating a winsome, wavey version of "Night Ferry" for sensitive souls to do the robot to.

Timothy J Fairplay - "In Collusion"
Forever Sound - "Glowworm"
Review: Superb fifth release on the Horn Wax label pairing the filmic experiments of Timothy J Fairplay with the serene, trance like techno of Forever Sound. You should of course be familiar with the former, most recently seen impressing alongside Mr Weatherall as The Asphodells, and steadily stockpiling an array of equally refined solo material on all manner of labels and "In Collusion" continues Fairplay's dalliances with an approach that blends cosmiche, soundtrack and minimal synth with his own distinct touch. His B Side companion Forever Sound might be less familiar, but "Glow Worm" finds the Berlin based artist contributing an equally worthy track, calmly traversing the kind of supple, hypnotic organic techno one might hear on a Border Community B Side.

Review: Finale Sessions is excited about this release from Knoxville, Tennessee artist Alex Falk. He has been on our radar for some time now so we are pleased to share this with you! The A1 track "An Ever" is one of our favorite tracks on the EP, with dreamy pads and monstrous stabs making for a fantastic floor-stomper. Rounding out the A side is "Rrecs", a deep Techno cut with clattering chords and moving drums and claps. B1 track "What Is Free" is another solid peak time killer with thick stabs and cut-up vocals making for a perfect Finale Sessions release. Finally, "BR56" brings up the tempo while chilling out the vibe with dubbed-out chords, nasty filter work and a sound floating somewhere between Techno and House.

Independance Ave Orchestra - "Welfare"
Review: ** REPRESS ** A seventh release on Proibito arrives and it finds label boss Anthony Naples switching things up as the full artist approach is cast aside in favour of some posse gathering tactics. Label regulars Hank Jackson and Huerco S both feature (the latter under his newly helmed Independence Ave. Orchestra pseudonym) and they are joined by Proibito debutants Alex Falk and Jackson Lee - both of whom have priors for Proper Trax and Mystical Disco respectively. "Mitsuda" by Falk is a strange, ghostly slab of techno characterised by odd phasing and the occasional gurgle of stretched tape, whilst "Mongoos" from Hank Jackson keeps it weird but turns the mood towards something a lot frostier. On the B Side "Sumba Togola" from Jackson Lee mangles up all manner of vocal samples amidst a twisting groove of manipulated bass lines and unpredictable drum programming whilst the glistening "Welfare" suggests Huerco S is using the Independence Ave. Orchestra name to show a different aspect of his productions skills.

Review: Having debuted on Kann with one of the finest contributions to their double LP compilation Family Horror, Leipzig based producer Falke is granted further opportunity to display his obvious talents with this finely judged EP. The title track "Undermyarms" is a resplendent example of European deep house finery, gliding across the A Side sumptuously with the unassuming grace of a moose sliding down a mall. Flip over for the expertly titled "Late Night" which mutates excellently from the gently rattling opening moments into a jerking mass of lysergic energy and thick kicks which is quite hypnotic by the time it reaches the end. The tinny sounding acid odyssey "Flying" ends this twelve in promising fashion.

Do You Box? (6:32)
Review: New York's FaltyDL has remained busy throughout the year, issuing a LP filled with bruk jungle on Planet Mu, collaborating with Fotomachine, dropping the odd Ninja Tune 12" and facilitating a most interesting album from Elysia Crampton through his Blueberry label. Speaking of which, the man himself lines this latest Blueberry 12" with a pair of signature heavy licks. The A side, "River Girl", is simply a great piece of house music with subtle tribal influences and sultry vocal samples, all wrapped up in a hybrid coating consisting of hip-hop, juke and even a little synth-pop, perhaps. On the flip, "Do You Box?" goes much deeper down the rabbit hole, offering an odd, broken beat that is just slightly too fast for hip-hop, and a tad slow for house. Whatever you would want to call it, it's clear that FaltyDL has the ability to marry just about any genre together.

Review: Hot remix action of Falty DL's recent Heaven Is For Quitters EP - the good (or even better!) news is that this is volume 1, so we can expect more of this gold in the near future. Much like his own tunes, The Cyclist and O'Flynn turn in two dusty, percussion-heavy dance experiments that blur the lines between bass and house, coming through with some lovely, late summer rays of warmth. On the flip, Lobster-boy Palms Trax rewires "Neeloon" into a sparse house banger with plenty of aqueous exploration in its underbelly, and Kaidi Tatham transforms "Drugs" into an magnificently off-kilter nu-jazz piece.

Review: Mic Newman's sample-heavy alias Fantastic Man is back, making his debut on New York's Let's Play House label. It's Jazz , rolling pianos and an interjecting trumpet that are sampled most, quite roughly, in the EP's title track, while 'how are you' or "Wie Gehts", rather, sees Fantastic Man's DJ fader approach to production come back into play - best heard on his track "Look This Way" from 2010. The EP's highlight is the hi-energy skip and twinkling keys of "Sanctuary", while "Scenic Route", sampling some spoken word this time, combines Italo disco with touches of Krautrock and, of course, house music.

How Bout It?
Review: Fantastic Man, otherwise known as Mic Newman, helms the debut release on his own Fine Choice imprint, a vinyl only endeavour primed to fill the needs of the more discerning deep house aficionados out there. A fixture on the effervescent deep house scene in Melbourne (he's part of the tongue in cheek Melbourne Deep House Mafia) Newman has been expanding his discography in recent years with appearances on Tsuba and Murmur complemented by the rise of his Fantastic Man alias with key drops for Let's Play House and Wolf Music. Founding Fine Choice seems like an appropriate step right now, and the two tracks on this Late At Night 10" are true examples of sample laden, beat down house at its finest, both demonstrating his deft editing skills and talent for subaqueous grooves. Recommended.

Review: Mic Newman's Fine Choice label was established earlier this year as a vinyl only outlet for the Melbournite to release music under his immediately recognisable Fantastic Man pseudonym. The sample laden, beat down house and sun blemished disco of his debut Fine Choice missive is continued here (as is the chosen 10" format) with lead track "Tension" a wonderfully uplifting blend of smudged melodic keys, chugging techy drums and fizzing underbelly. It's the kind of sassy production you could drop on a sun laden Croatian beach and immediately gain a dancefloor's ears. Complementing this is "Margine Call" which sees Newman pair some samples from a test signal record with off kilter disco funk.

Review: Having made his name making decent deep house, Fantastic Man appears to be following in the footsteps of fellow Melbourne export Tornado Wallace and pursuing a far more Balearic, kaleidoscopic sound. Certainly, Dream Machine is arguably his strongest EP to date, delivering a trio of cuts that expertly fuse Italo, Scandolearic and new age influences. There's naturally much to admire, from the lilting melodies, tactile proto-house rhythms, Italo attitude and bubbling synth bass of "Fountain Gate", to the marimba-clad breeziness and chiming tunefulness of "St Elmo's (Theme)". The title track, a study in early deep house melodiousness, is also pretty impressive.

Birds Of Paradise
Review: Mic Newman, or otherwise known as the one and only Fantastic Man, returns to Fine Choice Records with yet more of his very own organic house music. With previous outings on Wolf Music and Let's Play House, among others, Fantastic Man has now weaved his way into dance music's epicentre and his tunes have been coveted by the likes of London's Tief and Feel My Bicep crews. "Snake Charmer" is a tropical house lick complete with monkey sounds and all, whereas "Donkey Punch" is somewhat of a hybrid thanks to its broken beat pattern and oddball bassline - what a peach! Over on the B-side, "El Tropo" is an uber deep cut with a rather lovely set of Balearic melodies, but the real treat is "Birds Of Paradise" thanks to its utter neglect of a 4/4 beat pattern. Instead, Newman creates a tight, functional groove out of sparse and airy flurries of sound. Recommended.

Cool Waters (7:10)
Review: Aussie artist Fantastic Man returns to action following a quiet 2017 with a two-track missive that's decidedly different from the warm, disco-tinged deep house with which he made his name. While both "Reality Change" and "Cool Waters" retain the core warmth and attention to detail we've come to expect, both look to the sci-focused futurism of classic Detroit techno for inspiration. "Reality Change" is perhaps the more spacey and dreamy of the two, with meandering, elongated chords rising above a bustling, acid-flecked, techno-tempo groove. "Cool Waters", on the other hand, feels more urgent in tone, with heavier analogue bass and sleazy, cut-up vocal samples combining to create an incessant late night groover.
