J Dilla - "Geek Down" (1:25)
The Jimi Entley Sound - "Charlies Theme" (3:09)
Review: In a rare backwards castling and killer checkmate, Friendly Records boldly re-press one of J Dilla's most beloved cuts, 'Geek Down', which appeared on his landmark Donuts LP. Known for its sample of the 2001 dark funk tune 'Charlies Theme' by The Jimi Entley Sound, this indelible, ringed hors d'oeuvre was essential for the critics' collective assessment that the 2005 LP was his magnum opus. Trailing pink sprinkles behind it, 'Geek Down' made Dilla's name. Sadly, the title would seem predict the artist's death just three days after the record's release. Dilla was a true productive geekazoid, and it shows in this track, with its untameable, above-the-law Western guitar wahs and tense, lilting strings keeping the goosebump hairs stood aright. The originally sampled track appears on the B, still only part-revealing the magic trick.

Review: German label Oonops Drops is ever more essential if you ask us and tidy 7"s like this prove why (as does their mission to focus is on "sustainability, climate protection and socio-cultural values".) 'Bird's Lament' is a top tier tune from Slick Walk x Sneaky with live drum breaks and serene strings making for a reflective late night vibe. On the flip of this limited edition and clear slice of wax is Avantgarde Vak with the sweet hip hop sounds of 'Keep Ya Eyes Up' then Toshiyuki Sasaki with his sublime 'Toshi's Bonus Breaks.'

Apogee Of Hypnos (SSR 7" edit) (4:09)
Review: Theodor's 'Glades & Avenues' 7" delivers a soulful experience that feels both effortless and refined. The title track, 'Glades & Avenues,' on side one, showcases Theodor's sultry vocals over a smooth, melodic backdrop. The gentle percussion and flowing melody create a serene atmosphere, making it a standout for fans of laidback soul. On side two, 'Apogee Of Hypnos' (Sundae Soul edit) brings in a groovy, yet chilled vibe. With smooth drum patterns, rich keyboards and classy vocals, the track radiates a calm, melodic energy perfect for winding down. DJs seeking something mellow for their sets will find this 7" a perfect fit. The entire release feels warm and inviting, with a soulful relaxation.

After a digital-only debut in 2022, this release celebrates the dynamic collaboration between yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, who first captured hearts with their iconic 1998 album. The album's unique style flows seamlessly, with tracks like 'So be it' and 'Sweetheart. Sweethard. Sweetodd', igniting old-school vibes while addressing contemporary issues with sharp wit. Review: This release sees acclaimed producer Apollo Brown team up with Journalist 103 and DJ Soko to form The Left, a project that paints a vivid sonic portrait of Detroit, highlighting a journey through the city's soul and rust-riddled soundscapes that evokes a sense of urban grit and resilience. Brown's production is masterful, layering lush piano melodies over haunting samples and dusty drums. Journalist 103's narrative wordplay adds another dimension, his insightful lyrics weaving tales of struggle and triumph against the backdrop of Detroit's urban landscape. DJ Soko's cuts provide the finishing touch, adding a dynamic energy that keeps the momentum flowing. With guest appearances from Detroit heavyweights like Guilty Simpson, Finale, and MarvWon, the reissue is a powerful and evocative tribute to the Motor City, a must-listen for fans of hip-hop and anyone who appreciates soulful, cinematic soundscapes.

The real fans have probably been waiting for the vinyl release and it's great to see the correct decision has been made to grant Black Messiah a double LP pressing. Review: Elusive former Odd Future wordsmith Earl Sweatshirt celebrated the ten year anniversary of his seminal 2013 major label debut Doris back in August to a sold out crowd down the road from our offices in KOKO. Directly after the show had finished, the mass would march down to the Jazz Cafe for an exclusive club night where teasers were unveiled of the long-gestating collaborative album with esteemed, multi-generational hip-hop producer The Alchemist. Already streaming while vinyl currently sits on the presses, Voir Dire offers a reliably hazy, laid back yet subtly esoteric collection of forward thinking, muted bangers; breathing with the same sonic ambivalence of a project such as Madvillainy, while the mainstay features from Sweatshirt alumni MIKE and Vince Staples aid in grounding the work within the ever-expanding tapestry of Earl's output.

Review: Once known as the technical wunderkind of alt hip-hop collective Odd Future, the ascension of Earl Sweatshirt to incomparable outlier status as a wordsmith very much in his own lane, has been a muted spectacle to behold. Celebrating the tenth birthday of Doris (his acclaimed major label debut released in 2013) earlier this year in front of a sold out KOKO just a stone's throw (no pun intended) from our offices, the anniversary show was immediately followed by a mass exodus down to Camden's Jazz Cafe where a limited club experience teased material from the much-pondered collaborative project with legendary producer and long-time Earl affiliate The Alchemist. Currently available to stream while vinyl continues to be pressed, Voir Dire exudes a lackadaisical, dare we say positive demeanour across its brief half-hour runtime, with Earl unpacking his fading twenties, preparing for his encroaching thirties and delving into the shift in perspective that comes with fatherhood. Brimming with both artist's trademark flourishes of drugged out, apathetic delivery and chopped, screwed and warped jazz and soul samples, the subtle coalescing of styles results in a work that's equal parts enlightening yet understated, while long-time collaborators/friends Vince Staples and MIKE both offer standout appearances.

Review: A collaborative album made and released by Mike Patton and NYC's hip-hop DJ trio the X-Ecutioners, General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners is a landmark album in the big-smoked turntablists' discog, thanks to its then-newfangled embrace of elements of two nascent genres: free jazz and glitch. In fact, the album is themed around a war between the two vastly different styles, which makes it a worthy, but lesser-known contemporary to many other artists fusing the styles at the time, such as Amon Tobin. However, this album is more in the vein of Wu-Tang than future angst; this reissue via Ipecac serves to rejolt its underground infamy.

Their fusion of head-knocking drums, smooth flows, and intricate scratches creates a lush vibe that harks back to golden era gems. Each track delves into the concept of infinity, exploring boundless energy through soulful beats and insightful lyrics. After staring out as a collaboration for a single, Kooley High & Tuamie's instant chemistry evolved into this full-length album which is rooted in the classics but pushes boundaries and resonates with a fusion of retrospective and forward-thinking vibes.

Review: There is so much killer hip-hop out there right now it is a real delight. It is fair to say that much of it is of an old school bent - boom bap drums and silky soul flurries, but that doesn't make it any less essential. Coming back for a third album here is legendary beat maker and MC Large Pro aka The Large Professor. His highly anticipated long player is rich in signature sounds that can be sung to, danced to or skated to. All 10 cuts are gold standard bangers and take in highlights such as the young energy of 'Let It Fly' to the more sleazy ghetto sounds of 'Rooftop Love.'

Review: The second instalment of the Revenge trilogy is another doozy that once again reaffirms the indomitable spirit of the vengeful Gorilla at the same time as showcasing a relentless pursuit of violent justice. Against the brilliantly evocative backdrop of cinematic beats crafted by expert producer The Dirty Sample, Ol' Gorilla Bones is in top form as he spins vivid yarns of gruesome retribution against inept rappers. While revenge remains the central motif across this 16-track album, the duo's horrorcore narrative delves into unexpected realms that range from hockey references on 'Gerry Cheevers' to literary allusions on 'Honest Proposal'. It's a fine sequel full of macabre beat magic.

Hope Handwritten is full of indelible love letters and brims with the confidence of an artist who has finely honed her craft. The West London singer leans on neo-soul and classic r&b for inspiration while weaving personal narratives with meticulous care. The standout track 'Breaking Isn't What A Heart Is For' exemplifies the album's essence with velvet vocals over beautifully arranged instrumentals that deepen the emotion of her storytelling. Tala's literary background shines through in her direct yet poetic lyrics, which make this one even more of a fine debut.

Review: If Detroit as a collective mind knows what's good for it, it'll note 8 Miles To Moenart as one of its most prized dance albums. Tall Black Guy's debut LP hears a tenth anniversary reissue edition via First Word; the artist known personally as Terrel Wallace recalls his humble Detroit beginnings; he was raised on an early staple diet of Motown, and the phono-dubbed source material of which is here heard breezily funnelled and assembled into ten gaunt, sample-flipping house numbers. But this new edition doesn't fail to switch things up either, in fact presenting it almost as a different record; two new tracks feature, 'From Home To Work, And Back' and 'Running The Motor', on top of an alt-mix of the single 'Mon Amie De'troit', previously only available on 7" vinyl. "While it's nice to reminisce,", says Wallace, "it's important to look forwards, so I wanted to include something new here to represent my progression as an artist, so there's some new versions included, that I created with the help of some jazz musician friends of mine."

Review: Nothing Leaves The House: The Anthology brings together four talented producers who each bring their own flavour to instrumental hip-hop. Tall Black Guy kicks things off with 'One to One,' a jazzy, laid-back track with a smooth groove, followed by 'Solar Coaster For The People,' which ups the energy with its infectious rhythm. Eric Lau's 'Chop For Mr Thing' is a standout, with intricate beats and soulful layers, while Kidkanevil's 'Loopin' Ill' brings playful, quirky melodies. Mr Thing closes the collection with 'Changes,' a funky, groove-driven track that wraps things up on a high note. An essential compilation for fans of soulful hip-hop and jazzy beats.

Born from the vibrant East Coast culture of skating, graffiti, and MCing, Tame One's partnership with Division East Records brings forth a raw and unapologetic expression of Newark's hip-hop scene. Despite its previous obscurity, this reissue on purple vinyl breathes new life into the album, showcasing Tame One's lyrical prowess and the album's gritty production, remastered by Shape, Mishap, and others. The inclusion of an unreleased Stretch Armstrong HOT 97 freestyle featuring Redman and Rah Digga adds to the album's allure, making it a must-have for both hardcore fans and newcomers alike. Review: Kaidi Thatham remains one of the truest artists in the field of broken beat and modern jazz, and his fifth album for First Word shows no signs of slowing down. There's a certain signature you know belongs to him when those nasty Moog synth lines start flexing around the groove, but there's such depth and variety to his expression at this point in time, it feels like the possibilities are endless. From rattling neo-funk get downs to blissful downtempo reveries and on to the killer hip-hop of 'The Only Way' featuring Uhmeer on mic duties, this is an album bursting with invention at every turn.

Review: Kaidi Tatham is a master of broken beats and a widely respected figure in the London music scene. His new 12 track album takes us on a lush and louche trip through all his myriad musical skills and styles. Boogie, gospel-tinged hip-hop, jazz-funk and more all colour the futurist grooves with contributions from The Easy Access Orchestra, and pianist Robert Mitchell. This is a fourth solo album from the man and maybe his best yet, even though it has come so quick on the heels of the release of An Insight To All Minds in 2021.

Review: Los Angeles MC T.F has a bona-fide South Central gangster mindset but he also has all the technical mic skills of a classic New York MC. He first made waves back in 2016 with a feature on 'Tookie Knows II' by ScHoolboy Q and has since drop some classic West Coast sounds but here he works with Lord Mobb producer Mephux as well as the legendary Roc Marciano for a fresh new record that dives deep into his own hood. It tells stories of how and what shaped him with real narrative. It tells the tale of a man proud to have come through the violence and poverty of it all and now be making moves on the world stage.

Review: West Coast hip-hop legends Tha Dogg Pound return with their latest album, W.A.W.G. (We All We Got), marking their reunion with Death Row Records and mentor Snoop Dogg, who last collaborated on their 2006 release, Cali Iz Active. This homecoming is a celebration of their enduring legacy, with Daz Dillinger and Kurupt showcasing their signature West Coast sound. The album features a mix of smooth and gritty tracks, including Blxst's velvety vocals on 'Need Some Space' and DaBaby's West Coast-infused energy on 'After Hours.' Despite the notable guest features, W.A.W.G. remains a testament to Tha Dogg Pound's indomitable chemistry and the revitalized Death Row Records. Anchored by their classic style, the album proves that while Tha Dogg Pound may only have each other, it's all they need to deliver a powerful and memorable comeback.

Review: After their well-received debut, Theodor returns with a new LP that elevates their signature psychedelic soul sound. Drawing inspiration from 60s jazz and 70s soul, the band crafts a contemporary sound infused with dreamy synthesisers, mellow acoustic drums and infectious bass lines. The unique combination of falsetto and soulful timbre from the two vocalists weaves together themes of self-reflection, cosmic contemplation and poignant memories of lost friends. This release shows the band's evolution, with tracks that feel cinematic and emotive, leaving you in a tranquil, sun-drenched atmosphere. Static drum machines and elastic instrumental layers give the music a hypnotic quality, while classic pop song structures provide a familiar yet fresh appeal. The LP's wide sonic range and mellow grooves evoke a lazy summer afternoon, perfect for a relaxed tea break. Fans of AIR's silky synthesisers, early Mac DeMarco's mellow vibes, or the rhythmic soul and funk of the 70s will find much to enjoy. Theodor's refined approach to their distinctive style marks a significant step forward, blending nostalgia with innovation to create a soundtrack that stirs both the soul and imagination.

As you'd expect, it is packed with real emotion and heart and layers up fresh beats with meaningful melodies across a superb selection of instrumentals. The track titles themselves tell the story of how the pair met and detail their journey as hip-hop outfit People under The Stairs. It's an album that is as good as any he has been involved with and is heartfelt throughout. Well worth checking for fans old or new.

Review: Memphis crew Three 6 Mafia are one of the most vital forces in Southern rap, still reigning supreme more than 30 years since they formed. Back in 2000 they helped define the sound orbiting the group and their label with the Hypnotise Camp Posse compilation, bringing in all their different collaborations and configurations and other MCs riding on beats from DJ Paul and Juicy J. Gangsta Boo especially shines on the likes of 'We Ain't Playin' while Lord Infamous tears it up on 'Don't Make Me Kill'. This is the real deal, from the razor-sharp beats to the deadly flows from the extended Three 6 family, now pressed up on a double 12" with an insert.

This project continues the narrative arc started with Baby Angel, an independently released mini-album that marked a significant creative leap for her. Quantum Baby opens with 'No Simulation,' a contemplative track that sets a low-key tone, aiming to introduce a deeper narrative. 'When I Get You Alone' offers a sultry groove, while 'No Broke Boys' stands out as a memorable anthem with a catchy beat. The album closes with 'Nasty,' a tracK that is sure to be a hit with all who play it. Overall, Quantum Baby has lots great moments.

Review: More of a refinement than a total reinvention TOKiMONSTA's latest sees her subtly shifting her sound while retaining its essential character. While collaborations are present, they serve to highlight rather overshadow, her distinctive production style. This is a curated journey, moving fluidly between moments of quiet introspection and bursts of dancefloor energy. 'On Sum', the much-anticipated link-up with Anderson.Paak and Rae Khalil, is a clear standout. The established chemistry between TOKiMONSTA and.Paak is undeniable, their styles meshing seamlessly. Khalil's smooth vocals provide a captivating entry point, giving way to.Paak's effortless flow. It's a lesson in modern r&b, where soulful vocals meet TOKiMONSTA's signature rhythms and shimmering synths. This double LP isn't confined to 'On Sum', however. It explores a wider landscape. 'Corazon / Death By Disco Pt. 2' is pure kinetic energy, a samba-infused track built for sweaty dancefloors. But the album also makes space for quieter moments, with tracks like 'Eternal' and 'Reverie' offering a chance to breathe. It's here, in these more contemplative moments, that the intricacies of TOKiMONSTA's production truly come to the fore. This release is a statement, showcasingTOKiMONSTA's continued artistic growth, her ability to weave diverse influences into a cohesive and compelling whole. From the high-octane energy of 'Corazon/Death By Disco Pt. 2' to the understated beauty of 'On Sum', this is a journey worth taking.

Review: Don Toliver's Hardstone Psycho reveals an artist navigating exciting new territory while retaining his signature style. This album marks a distinct progression from his past work, showcasing Toliver's dynamic evolution within the Houston rap scene. With its standout track 'Bandit,' the album bursts forth with vibrant trap beats, punchy rock elements, and Toliver's striking falsetto. This energetic departure from his earlier mellow vibes on Love Sick is a refreshing highlight. Similarly, 'Glock' impresses with its soulful sample of Whitney Houston's 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop),' providing a powerful hook and intriguing chord shifts. 'Tore Up' also shines, blending emotional depth with a rock bass, making it a strong contender for one of the album's top moments. Despite some uneven patches, including the ambitious but uneven structure of the album, Toliver's bold experimentation is evident. While some tracks like 'Deep in the Water' lose their initial punch, and features like Kodak Black's on 'Brother Stone' are mixed, the production melds trap, rock and r&b in a compelling way. Overall, Hardstone Psycho demonstrates Toliver's potential and creativity, hinting at even more exciting developments in his future.

Retirement was more of a hiatus as Too $hort got back in the game in 1999 with the appropriately named album Can't Stay Away. Though this album was initially intended to be his swan song, Too $hort returned in 1999 with Can't Stay Away. Gettin' It allowed him to go out on a high after earning his 6th Platinum record, but now they're back again and as well as having Parliament Funkadelic contribute to two songs, Ant Banks and Shorty B offer laid-back Bay Area funk along with some G-Funk contributions by Colin Wolfe, L.A. The lead single, 'Tuesday,' exemplifies this fusion with serrated guitar tones and a soaring chorus. Review: Tyla every much burst onto the global r&b scene with her breakout single 'Water.' Se quickly capitalised on summer ubiquity with a self-titled album which showcases her distinct blend of Afrobeat, pop and r&b. It's a mix of the usual tropes - sultry, steamy vocals, lovely smooth bass, rich melodic hooks and polished production that doesnt lose an intimate edge. Tyla brings an energy that's both vibrant and emotional with her vocals and while her most famous single remains her best work, her ability to weave personal experiences into her lyrics adds depth on this record which does a god job of showing her impressive vocal range.

It's a fusion of r&b and amapiano - a mix of house, jazz, downtempo and rich melody from her native South Africa - that is topped with her seductive and soft vocals. Channeling the likes of the great Aaliyah, it's been proceeded day the captivating lead single 'Waze' and is full of heart melting moments of tender r&b beauty. Review: Actively wanting to distance himself from his divisive debut projects 'Goblin' and 'Bastard', American rapper and internet personality Tyler, the Creator pulled off a major tonal shift with 'Wolf'. Featuring his first high-profile features, like that of Mike G and Erykah Badu on the simmering 'Treehome 95', Tyler put it on record that he just wanted to make music for people to get high to as opposed to the aggressive, angsty hardcore angle on 'Yuckers' that got him famous. That doesn't mean that Tyler is dead, 'Jamba' and 'Tamale' still have that crunch for the old-school fans, but 'Wolf' shares much with its successor 'Cherry Bomb' in its awkward transitional sound leaving them as outliers in critics 'Best of Tyler' lists.

These are both amazing albums, with the rare praisers of which earning nothing but respect because, in all honesty, every Tyler, the Creator album is incredible - despite what the self-deprecating genius himself may say.

Review: Tyler, the Creator's fifth studio album was produced entirely by the Californian artist himself, but it does feature guests like Solange, Playboi Carti, Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert. It immediately debuted at number one and it's easy to see why. Rich with a complex fusion of funk, rap and r&b that glides on Cali-synths and neo soul melodies, the whole thing is tethered to the ground with a hefty low end and follows the narrative of a love triangle as told by American comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Arguably his best work to date, the production is next level and storytelling wholly involving.

Review: Tyson's debut album is a captivating exploration of deep, soulful r&b infused with diverse sonic influences. Produced and co-written with Oscar Scheller, the album spans ten tracks that delve into homegrown bass cultureibreakbeats, street soul and trip-hopiwhile incorporating icy 80s synthpop and expansive 00s r&b. The result is a unique, boundary-pushing sound. Highlights include 'Jumpstart', a smooth, atmospheric piece that blends dub, drum & bass and trap into a mesmerising groove. 'Alien Romance' introduces futuristic elements with inventive soundscapes that merge r&b and hip-hop, creating an otherworldly yet accessible vibe. Meanwhile, 'Angel Dust' wraps listeners in a magical, ambient euphoria, showcasing Tyson's ability to craft deeply immersive tracks. Tyson's raw, emotive vocals and innovative production make this a seamless fusion of nostalgia and modernity that redefines contemporary urban music. Fans of experimental yet deeply soulful music will find plenty to love in this remarkable debut.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Warped records***

Kanye West's new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, VULTURES 1, feels unexpectedly cohesive and fully realizedia surprising change of pace for West's recent output. Known for raw and often incomplete releases, this time he brings clear production and a crisp, polished mix. Ty's smooth delivery contrasts with Kanye's own verses, blending effortlessly on tracks like the Donna Summer-sampling 'Good (Don't Die)'. Rhythmic, industrial beats provide a dynamic backdrop, especially on tracks like 'Paid' and 'Carnival,' giving this album a depth that stands out in West's complex, ever-evolving catalogue.

Review: Kanye West may be widely criticised and sidelined these days, but he will forever be known as a vital hip-hop pioneer whose influence is undeniable. Back in 2024, he teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign to release Vultures 1 - an album that is bold and genre-defying and reflects the duo's musical prowess and polarising personas. Production is layered and lush, with contributions from heavyweights like Timbaland and James Blake, and standout features from equally big names like Playboi Carti and Travis Scott. Tracks here all shine with lively rhythms and high-energy flows, even if the lyrics don't always hit the mark. Nonetheless, the project topped the Billboard 200 all the same.

Review: Wiki's new album, 14K Figaro, arrives after a slew of collaborative projects with the likes of The Alchemist and MIKE, Navy Blue, Subjxct5, and NAH. The album is produced entirely by Tony Seltzer, a longtime collaborator who helped soundtrack his earliest efforts - including No Mountains in Manhattan, his 2017 debut album for XL Recordings, and Oofie, its potent 2019 follow-up. Guest features include the World's Fair MC Remy Banks, the Bruiser Brigade spitter Zelooperz, and the prolific D.C. native WifiGawd. A curveball in relation to his past projects, the native New York opts for a clean sound, adding in pepperings of drill and net rap - with samply stutters abounding on lackadaisical favourites like 'RL' - yet retaining the streetwise, grilled enfant terrible's omnipresent rawness.
