The Red Room
The Red Room (red vinyl 12")
Cat: OBJ 016. Rel: 28 Oct 10
The Red Room (OBJ vocal mix)
The Red Room (Kyle MF Hall MeMix)
Review: Dennis Ferrer and Kyle Hall have been two of the biggest names in house music in the past 18 months, albeit to very different audiences. The veteran Ferrer excelled on the ubiquitous "Hey Hey" towards the tail end of last year, which was hailed as an anthem everywhere from Room 1 at Fabric to the White Isle. The talented Mr Hall, meanwhile, exploded onto the scene in 2010 with releases on such esteemed imprints as Warp, Rush Hour, Third Ear and Hyperdub. His remix of Ferrer's "The Red Room" undulates with the prodigious talent's trademark off kilter drum programming, with the vocals chopped up and dipped in subaquatic reverb, while the original flexes its peak time muscles with tropical percussion, throbbing synths and that killer vocal line.

Transitions
Destination
Review: Two new slamming instrumentals grace this new double a-side EP. Already being championed by monster DJ's Louie Vega, Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell, this stunner once again showcases Dennis' diversity and distinct ability to go from uplifting spiritual pandemonium to hot, underground, deep, danceable, head-nodding tech. "Transitions" has that profound repetitive synthy bassline we all like so much, with Latin claps and afro-styled percussion, gargled vocal samples and much more. "Destination" starts off with slapping rhythms, then with strings drawn, he goes in to some far-off Middle Eastern world only to throw in Parisian-styled accordions on top. He meticulously assembles so many different sounds and his brilliant production sensibility allows him to seamlessly blend them all together. Crossing boundaries, cultures and continents "Destination" proves that it's just as much about the journey.

Underground Is My House
Cat: KSS 1234. Rel: 02 Aug 06
Underground Is My House (feat Tyrone Ellis - main mix)
Underground Is My House (feat Tyrone Ellis - instrumental)
Review: Deeper than deep celebration of the underground. Very classic sound with wicked bass, gut wrenchingly soulful vocals, that more than aptly conveys the feeling. Well placed organ and some bursts of bass led energy that will leave you weak. Solid B-side instrumental shows off the strength of the track on it's own, even without those incredible vocals.

EP 9 (12")

Dennis Ferrer - "Hey Hey" (Riva Starr Paradise Garage club mix) (7:27)
Ferreck Dawn - "By My Side" (feat Anthony Valadez - extended mix) (5:48)
John Summit - "Deep End" (extended mix) (6:25)
OFFAIAH - "Play It By Ear" (club mix) (6:02)
Review: Given that Defected's multi-arist EP series was designed as a way for vinyl DJs to get hold of some of the imrpint's biggest digital download hits, you'll be unsurprised to learn that volume nine contains some seriously sizable material. Riva Starr kicks things off with a remix of Dennis Ferrer classic "Hey! Hey!" that turns the track into a Moroder style electro-disco throb-job, before Ferreck Dawn delivers some big room vocal house pleasure. Over on the flip, John Summit's "Deep End" is another beefy big room workout built around sweet female vocals and a thickset bassline, while Offiah's "Play It By Ear" is a 21st century update of the muscular, mid-90s MK sound.

King Street Sounds Sampler Vol 2
Dennis Ferrer - "How Do I Let Go" (feat TK Brooks)
Rain: A Lil Louis Painting - "Give It Up" (Masters At Work club mix)
Mood II Swing - "Sunlight In My Eyes"
Kimara Lovelace - "Misery" (Lil Louis club mix)
Review: Now under new ownership (international dance music powerhouse Armada Music, fact fans), long-serving New York house imprint King Street Sounds is doing a good job in showcasing gems from its vast archives. This second label sampler contains four more genuine must-have cuts. First up, there's a chance to admire the deep, soulful house wonder that is Dennis Ferrer's 2008 hook-up with honeyed vocalist K.T. Brooks, 'How Do I Let Go'. It's followed by Masters at Work's deliciously loose, disco-influenced deep house revision of 'Give It Up' by Lil' Louis' Rain project (first released in 2000), Mood II Swing's DIY Soundsystem favourite 'Sunlight In My Eyes' (easily one of the greatest deep house jams of all time) and Lil' Louis's swinging garage-house rub of Kimra Lovelace's 'Misery'.
