Cat: SBR 005LP. Rel: 19 Oct 06
RD Burman - "The Burning Train Theme"
Unknown Artist - "Disco 82"
Kalyanji Anandji - "YOGA"
Kalyanji Anandji - "Disco Cammata"
RD Burman - "Pyar Karnewale" (feat Asha Bhosle)
Review: The Sitar Beat series is built with the DJ in mind - collecting some of the wildest, heaviest and most psychedelic Indian funk recorded and presenting it loud, and ready for the turntable. The first four volumes were assembled by one Indian music aficionado... For the first time, a "guest compiler" was brought in to lace you with some obscure goodies for volume five. As always, we continue the dig into Indian deep funk and psycho-psychedelic masterpieces recorded for the Bollywood film industry. And this time we're even going straight to Indian VHS Videotapes to issue incidental music never before released on vinyl... Sitar Beat Volume Five offers up the sought after title track from RD Burman's "Burning Train" soundtrack alongside Indo-disco (including one helluva Kraftwerk rip off!) and promises to be the first time that many of these songs are heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. Edits remove any bobbing and weaving, leaving funk that only flies straight ahead!

Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Hard World (3:33)
Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

I Hear Music In The Streets (Touch mix) (10:45)
I Hear Music In The Streets (Expansions NYC dub) (4:49)
I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

Review: Super Spicy celebrates getting to five years old in the best way it knows how - with a new release, of course. This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. On the flip side are three more vibrant and vivacious disco dancers for good times only.

Pablo Sanchez - "Monkiez"
Review: Those Scandinavian merchants of mischievous beats known as GAMM turn to the Catalonian sun for their latest twelve inch excursion, as Pablo Sanchez adds to his production CV with two cuts. The A Side sees "Yes We Can Can" from Pointer Sisters tuned inside out and embellished with some mid tempo bombastic disco dub sensibilities that further demonstrates the Barcelona based producer's skill at chopping samples. On the flip Sanchez melds some of Thelonius Monk's finest jazz flourishes to a classic jeep beat bump which should satisfy anyone who is down with the likes of Keepup! Records.

Review: Mushroom Pillow have tapped up the maverick Jacques Renault here and asked him to tap into a whole new world of influence away from his colourful house fair. It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.

Review: For those of you with a sweet tooth for gamm, raw fusion, and some soul-jazzy delicacies, here's the first release from the label Down The Bush. They start with a combination of all new artists from the label. U-man drops 'Champion' on the A-side, kind of electric soul with some rough dubbing reggae vibration, followed by a totally different remix by not-so-new-comer Chalice Cooper for a bit more of a Latin touch. The B-side introduces Callaloo with a nu-jazz bomb called 'Green Note' and there again, followed by a revamp dub cut version from main man behind the label, U-man, simply called 'Bush Wants You'.

Review: Not to be confused the Mancunian duo of the same name (RIP Electric Chair), the UBs aka Yeahman and The Undercover Brother dig deep into the archives of legendary funkateer Kenny Smith. Across this neat ten inch the duo present trademark Melody and Instrumental versions of two Smith classics. The A Side brings the soft funk rock vibes to "Everyone Knows I Love You", the Northern Soul gem Kenny made for the Kogan imprint, with the brassy leanings of the second version quite delightful. Break diggers will be licking their fingers at the raw materials on offer with "Think All About Number" a heavily vibing funker filled with plenty of brass and organ attitude.

Synthetic Substitution (Melody mix) (4:07)
Review: First released on green vinyl in 2008 and almost impossible to find since, "Synthetic Substitution" is an instrumental cover version of a celebrated Melvin Gill tune by The Undercover Brother, AKA Kenny Dope collaborator Victor Piagneri. The A-side "Instrumental Mix" re-creates the original version's famous groove, layering it with Clavinet lines, fluid pianos and spacey synth solos not evident on Gill's early '70s original. Arguably even better is the "Melody Mix", which adds in some fine George Benson style jazz guitar solos while retaining the familiar breakbeats, bassline and pianos. If you missed out first time around, we'd recommend copping a copy.

Review: The UB's bring their particular brand of funk to this steamy and fiery new 7" on the Fraternity label. It finds them in edit mode and first up reworking 'Stone Fox Chase'. It has some country-style harmonica built into the raw beats and plenty of psyched-out guitar lines that bring Americana vibes to the percolating rhythms. On the flip is their edit of 'Delirium' which is a totally different proposition - smooth funk grooves with busy chords and icy hi-hats. It's one that looks to the stars and crushes there on a feelgood vibe you hope never ends.

Review: Whether or not this label is named in reference to long-life semi-skimmed milk, we do not know, but the tunes on it are certainly fatter than the 2% you get with UHT. 'Set Your House In Order' is the sort of raw, from-the-heart soul sound that will bring any floor to rapture with its gospel influenced lyrics, big horns and neat organ chords. It's a real dancer, while 'Lego Brick Road' is more of a funk-strutter with moody bass and upright kicks embellished with some warped vocals and playful licks. Two gems.

Dreamboy 84
Review: The archives of Estonian artist Uku Kuut continue to prove fertile stomping ground for the PPU label, with this latest transmission drawing from unreleased material he recorded with his mother Maryn Coote. Coote is quite an established musician in her own right, recording a couple of albums as Marju Kuut, as well as collaborating with compatriot Uno Loop and it's clear her musical background helped shape Uku's formative direction. If you've partaken in any previous Kuut retrospectives from PPU, the four tracks here will be a real delight, with "Mayday" and "Dreamboy 84" particular highlights. The former is an alternate tape mix of a track from the Vision Of Estonia LP issued by the label back in 2012, whilst the latter features Marju's vocals in full swing.

It's Hot
Review: Theoretically there will come a point where People's Potential Unlimited runs out of obscure funk and boogie from the eighties. And that day will be a very dark one, as every release from the Washington based label is a real delight, with PPU030 no exception. Originally out way back in 1983 on LA imprint Montage, "Give It Up" sees Ultimate Choice plough a decidedly p-funk slant on boogie and it would take a veritable curmudgeon to not be hooked as soon as that tight funk riff drops. It's the sort of track you feel right in your hips, is rough around the edges and has a killer vocal hook. Flip over the stripped down rump pump of "It's Hot" with a rhythm that sounds like it's been sampled more than a few times!

Review: French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse laid this cult gem down in 1983. After its release, he became an underground sensation within the niche French boogie scene, Both of the tunes which now get reissued manage to successfully mix political statements with dance-floor fire. First up is 'Naima' which is about the resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. On the flip is 'Tiers Monde' which is a much more heavy digital reggae tune that offers a reminder that we must not forget about abandoned children of the Third World. This was big in Paris in the 80s and will be just as big now.

Review: It has been a while since Umbo released any new music but now he is back on the Austrian label Resense with a superb pair of edits on this essential little 45 rpm. Kicking things off is 'Grits' which is a hard hitting bit of b-boy funk and breaks with old school soul vocals and plenty of horn stabs powering it ever onwards and upwards. Fantastic stuff that we hope is the start of much more to come from edit king Umbo.

The Italian jazz musician, most famous also for scoring many film soundtracks, here has one of his most dance-y tracks served up by Four Flies. Originally released in 1975, Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni is an outstanding experimentation of forward-thinking jazz-funk, played by some of Turkey's most talented musicians. The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. The illicit imprint are slowly picking up speed once again with this double drop of reworks from DJ Prime the third G.A.M.M. release this year. Widely regarded as the inspiration for UK reissue label BBE, Universal Robot Band's boogie standard "Barely Breaking Even" gets toughened up with some additional house flex. 'New Generation' has been one of the most sought after 45s on the funk scene for a long time - hardly surprising given it's super heavy groove and amazing vocals, plus the fact that it was never initially distributed, making it rather hard to track down! The Universals were a successful local band, playing gigs at clubs along Daytona beach in Florida. In 1970 they were offered a distribution deal and went to cut a 45 at a local studio. Somehow the stock never found its way to the distributor, meaning it was essentially lost forever - aside from the 50 copies the band had kept. A lucky find a few years ago led to the band being tracked down, and now Jazzman are proud to present the Universals only single in all it's remastered glory!

First of all, all of the members were behind jail bars when it was recorded, and hardly any of them had professional music training prior to its recording. The a-side offers a head stomping banger - a classic Latin groove wrapped around a familiar hip-hop break. Fans of an early Will Quantic will be feeling this!

Waiting For Your Love
Pepundenku
Review: Even by the dusty-fingered standards of arch crate diggers People's Potential Unlimited, this is something of an obscurity. During the late 1970s, Surinamese musician Usje Sukatma recorded a number of groovy, disco-influenced stoner rock gems most of which barely registered outside of his home country. Back in 2011, PPU rescued the superb "Waiting For Your Love" - his only song in English - from obscurity, sticking it out on an in-demand 7". Here they press it up again, this time on a single-sided 12" alongside "Pepundeku", a reggae and doo-wop influenced chunk of saucer-eyed sweetness sung in his native tongue. Like the A-side, it's something of a surprise killer.

Haunted By The Devil (4:18)
(Everybody) Do The Watusi (2:18)
Review: Forever investigating the most fertile corners of soul, Nicole Willis teams up with local Finnish troupe the Umo Jazz Orchestra for two contrasting slices of heart-melting, show-stopping soul. "Haunted By The Devil" hits with an Isaac Hayes style of symphonia while "(Everybody) Do The Watusi" is all about the swinging funk boogie with big band licks and energetic kicks from Nicole herself. Immense, as always.

Review: The brilliant and tireless Mr Bongo serve up another of their reissues with a big dose of love. 'Conflict Nkru!' from Ebo Taylor and Uhuru Yenzu was originally recorded back in 1980 and is one of the many great records that made Taylor such a towering figure of the Ghanaian music scene. A master of Afrobeat, Afrofunk and highlife he is fantastic form here with plenty of modern funk stitched into traditional Ghanian rhythms. The record is defined by catchy chants, horn riffs and guitar licks, with airy flute next to heavy horns. It close son arguably the highlight - 'Victory', which is based on a traditional song of the Asafa, or war people.

Review: The music of estranged Estonian producer Uku Kuut is becoming something of a personal obsession for Washington DC label Peoples Potential Unlimited and that's fine with us! First surfacing on PPU some three years ago with a dinky 7", Uku Kuut has graced the label with numerous subsequent releases of varying length with last year's Visions Of Estonia LP a stand-out. Grand Hotel represents another album length trawl through the archives of Kuut's instrumental funk, offering a ten track selection of material he recorded on his travels through the Soviet Union, Sweden and Los Angeles. Kuut's first ever recorded track dating back to 1982 is included, as is material recorded in Herbie Hancock's personal studio. Superb artwork to match some superb lo-fi funk.

Review: PPU is one of your favourite labels when it comes to dusty and lo-fi soul and related sounds. Now the DC-based crew delivers another gem with Grand Hotel, a collection of ten rare tracks from Estonian funk legend Uku Kuut, who they have released several times before now. The instrumental album traces Kuut's journey through the Soviet Union, Sweden, Los Angeles, and Estonia and is a window into his excellently eclectic style. Highlights include his first home recording from 1982 and a track produced in Herbie Hancock's studio. After more than 30 years of travelling across borders, these precious masters have found a permanent home and means that Grand Hotel is a fine tribute to Kuut's international influences.
