Love & Happiness (4:57)
Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Back On You (feat Crystal Winds) (13:28)
Review: Having previously re-invented Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain' as a luscious lover's rock epic, Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair has now turned its attention to another 1970s classic: Roy Ayers' 'Chicago'. In an act of genuine musical genius, they've re-imagined the track as a TB-303 and TR-909-driven chunk of acid house/deep house fusion, effectively updating Ayers' celebration of the Windy City while paying tribute in their own unique way. It's great, as is flipside 'Back on You (featuring Crystal Winds)', a dreamy, immersive and slowly building chunk of sunrise-ready, bongo-sporting musical deepness that's as sun-kissed and emotion-stirring as they come.

Colorful Horizon (3:54)
Review: No one knows much about the history of The Engineers, but they were a curio of psych rock from Iran in the late 60s or early 70s. The band members are credited as Abbas Miraftab and Reza Agah, and they have a sound which is raw and dynamic, capturing everything exciting about that golden era for fuzzy, overdriven rock with a liberal dose of funk in its bones. This reissue of their insanely rare single is coming on Juzz Records, a label from Tehran which has been set up to carry this incredible artefact.

Ebony Evans - "Loving You Is All I Wanna Do" (4:38)
Lewzarius - "Step Up" (4:54)
Review: Ebony Evans is a superb soul talent who for this single worked with Manny Campbell who wrote and arranged. Originally recorded in 2004, 'Loving You Is All I Wanna Do' appeared on the Luv's Fire CD Maxi Single and later on a full album in 2006 through Coastal Records but now debut on vinyl thanks to Soul Direction. On the flip side, Lewzarius' 'Step Up" shines as a rich collaboration between Campbell and Haran Griffin, who is best known for 'Movin' Much Too Fast.' Atlanta-born Lewzarius recorded this track during his time at Coastal Records in the late 90s.

Family (Birdland Love Theme) (4:52)
All I Do (4:34)
Review: This excellent 7" single dips into the archives of flautist Hubert Laws, offering up two rarities that date from 1981. On side A you'll find a superb live version of Laws' then recent single 'Family', which first featured on the Japanese-only LP Aurex Jazz Festival: Super Fusion Jam. A languid jazz-funk number featuring Laws' younger sister Eloise on vocals and plenty of fluid solos from the man himself, it's argualy a better version than the one originally featured on the 1980 album of the same name. Over on the flip you'll find a previously unissued recording of Hu Eloise and the rest of their top-notch fusion band giving their interpretation of Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do'. It's as fresh, breezy and emotion rich as you'd expect, with Eloise Laws' delivering a brilliant lead vocal.

Review: During 2020's numerous lockdowns, Roc The Producer and Electro Wayne returned to the studio and put the finishing touches to their third release on People's Potential Unlimited -a belated debut album of revivalist synth-boogie and P-funk that's so authentic you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was recorded in 1982. What we get is an attractive mix of colourful P-funk synths, jaunty synth-bass, TR-808 percussion and a mixture of talbox, vocoder and sung vocals. While mostly club-ready, there are also a number of seductive slow jams, making it a well-rounded album that fits the standard format of classic boogie and '80s soul LPs.

Review: Courtial With Errol Knowles's Don't You Think It's Time album gets a first ever vinyl reissue here, and gets deluxe treatment. The original was recorded in 1976 in San Francisco's Bay Area and soon became a real collector's classic for its vital soul and jazz funk sounds. To be honest, the cover art alone is worth the entry price here, but the sounds sure are sublime, with wiggy synth lines weaving their way in and out of the funky drumming on 'Don't You Think It's Time,' 'Best Of Friends' offering lush string sounds and silky grooves and 'Love Nevermore' having a bit of a samba shuffle next to the acoustic guitars and golden Rhodes chords.

Review: There's a mad story behind this 70s funk covers album... East Of Underground were a group of disillusioned GI's waiting to return from Vietnam. Knowing this gives the set a real sense of gravitas. But even if you didn't know that, the covers are a captivating listen, laced with raw unpolished musicianship and emotive harmonies. Highlights include the faltering highs of their version of Carole King and the dusty, crackly grooves of Rare Earth but it's all worth checking. And indeed owning.

Review: In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the US army held a 'battle of the bands' contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East Of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums...

Review: Glenn Echo & Daniel Meinecke won plenty of acclaim with their last outing What Happened To Yesterday?! and now they quickly back it up with a third outing on MotorCity Wine Recordings What Happened To Yesterday? Vol 2 is another blend of heady, dubby sounds with cosmic dance vibes that span serval sub-genres with ease. 'World In My Head' kicks off with lo-fi and low-key depths, and further downtempo tracks like 'Explanation of The Funk' with Dre King's trumpet and DJ Stylus's cuts, and 'Three-Season Crank' with Raja Kassis's guitar further sink you into blissed-out beats. The flip side has dancefloor-friendly jam 'Off The Rails,' then moves into dubby, meditative territory and ends with the gorgeous 'Black Bird Dub' which allows Echo's eclectic production and Meinecke's keyboard mastery to shine.

What Happened to Yesterday? is, we are told, the first of two albums from the pair that will arrive several months apart. It finds the pair get super hazy and dubby, with psychedelic charm swirling around their absorbing grooves next to subtle cues taken from the diverse likes of DJ Premier and King Jammy. There is a superb Moog-based cover of De La Soul's 'I Am I Be', Afro-Carribean disco in 'Dancehall of Grandeur' and epic jazz-rock on Volcano Sound' so dig in and prepare to be wowed.

Review: .El Michels Affair is nothing if not prolific. Fortunately, the band leader, composer and musician is also hella talented. This is one of his most famous and iconic albums in a discography that is full of them, not least because of course it tackles some of the most iconic source material in hip-hop, namely Wu-Tang Clan's seminal Enter The 37th Chamber. He flips it into an instrumental tribute to the world of the great band and no matter what format it appears in, it plays sells out. Cop this latest reissue now and sink into its lush orchestration, sweeping grandeur and elegant grooves.

Review: Some music is just destined to pour out of apartment windows onto muggy city streets-so it's kind of a shame this debut from El Michels Affair couldn't have come out just a little earlier in the summer. This is especially unfortunate, seeing as "Sounding Out The City", a real diamond of the current Brooklyn deep-soul revival, slept on a shelf for two years before finding release. Leon Michels (formerly of organ quartet the Mighty Imperials) leads a nine-piece soul train through 11 tracks that, sure, conjure up the Meters and the JBs, but manage to freshen themselves through lively production and a resistance to drab looping.

IT's lead by a snaking melody that brings to mind gypsy music and is underpinned by an almost rocksteady dub rhythm. The album first dropped in 1985 and was a result of 20 synthesizers being operated by eight of Japan's leading keyboard players. It is a truly captivating affair that takes in jazz-funk, rare-groove and hip hop styles throughout its course and amongst them is 'The Iron Side' which was of course used as the theme for the US TV detective drama of the same name. A real gem.

He steps out alone here with a new and outlier funk album that shows off his idiosyncratic style. It is a raw and dense sound that mixes up bold funk and gritty psychedelic soul while embracing the darker edges of both styles. Along the way, Ellis explores themes of truth, authenticity and the pitfalls of wealth while reflecting on the cost of giving away one's heart. Tracks like 'The Real Deal' and 'Money Drives Me Crazy 'capture these ideas with unfiltered emotion.

Now repressed for those who missed out, it's an experience that's hard to forget; from the US funk homage "Civilisation In The World" to the heart-tugging yearns of "Free Me Now" via the vibrant Afrobeat horn refrains on "Let Me Near Them Say", it's stood the test of time with real clarity and relevance. Climaxing with the psychedelic folky charms of the brilliantly titled "Shifty Hand Woman", Brigth's adventure should be enjoyed by all.

French label Favourite now presents a first ever reissue of the eponymous LP that was recorded in Caracas by a number of talented musicians. It has strong Latin and funk overtones. Love In Outer Space (feat Nao) (5:40)
Review: Much celebrated new school jazz crew Ezra Collective finally unveil their highly anticipated new album Where I'm Meant To Be after a big summer single 'Victory Dance' got us all excited. This record is a life-affirming romp with their famous hybrid sound tasing in all manner of different styles, eras and scenes. Some high-profile features from Sampa The Great, Kojey Radical, Emile Sande and Nao bring extra goodness to this record which is certainly a product of the current London scene but also owes a debt to the sounds of southern Africa. It all adds up to a real doozy.

Review: Space Oddities (1972 - 1982) are the results of Frenchman Georges Achille Teperino aka Nino Nardini, fellow countryman Roger Roger and German Eddie Warner's collaborations over ten years at Ganaro recording studio. Given some underground recognition in the late nineties by the likes of Barry 7 of Add N to (X) (with his Connectors series) or UK electronica legend Luke Vibert, they can now add Alexis Le-Tan (Les Edits Du Golem) and Jess as devotees, who made the effort of compiling the release. As Born Bad stated quite succinctly, the trio used their "strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions."

Review: A Record Store Day spectacular, Vuolo & Grande's Desert is as special as it gets; not only has the obscure Italian library records release been highly sought after for years, it's also a very formative instrumental psychedelic record in terms of utilise synthesisers in such a cosmic way. Cue references to Goblin and Tangerine Dream. You could even throw recent Demdike Stare material in that reference pit, too. Highlights include the warped, syncopations and battling twangs on "Transvesuvian" and the grand opening rock-out "Take Flights" but you really need to tuck in from start to finish to fully experience this. Way ahead of its time.
