Review: Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Bay Rose says she makes music for those that are "aimless and heartbroken". Her magnificently rich voice conveys the pain and lament everyone has felt at some point in their life of this new sophomore album Through & Through. There is an honesty to it that has defined all her work to date and a determination to really say something with her music. Unrestricted by genre though couched in hip hop and r&b, lead singles like 'Dance With Me' marry lo-fi beat work with her smoky, raw soul vocals to make for something truly impactful. There is no wonder this one has already had plenty of press praise on both sides of the Atlantic.

Review: The latest must-cop record from the good people at Big Crown is a real summer special. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band serve up some seriously soul-enriching grooves, with the impossibly warm and good time vibes that come from steel drums on each and every one. The beats are rooted in funk, with fat bass and expressive horn work bring each one to life. There are sojourns into dub, disco and jazz, and the whole thing bris with so much character and personality that it cannot but put a smile on your face.

Review: Canadian trio Badbadnotgood have made us wait for Talk Memory, their fifth album. Arriving a decade after their first full-length, and some five years since the release of their acclaimed fourth LP, it's a much more expansive and cinematic affair than its predecessors - both in scope (it includes more nods towards post-rock and jazz-rock, for example) and sound (a number of tracks feature string arrangements by Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai). It's a dazzling affair all told, with the band's choice of improvisational composition techniques and an impressive guest list (Laraaju, Karriem Roggins, Terrace Martin and Brandee Younder all appear) resulting in a string of epic, life-affirming compositions. Picking highlights is tough, but we'd suggest checking slow-burn, constantly building epic 'Signal to the Noise' and the buzzing, psychedelic jazz-rock of 'Beside April'.

Review: Cool as you like jazz cats Badbadnotgood have more than done their bit in helping to shape the contemporary jazz revival with a number of great albums and even a fine compilation of their inspirations and influences. IV is one of their most acclaimed in recent times which is why it now gets a reissue on double white gatefold vinyl. Guests Sam Herring, Colin Stetson and Kevin Celstin amongst more all feature, as do plenty of the US group's lush broken beats and nu-jazz instrumentals. Well worth coping if you missed out the first time around.

Review: Erykah Badu remains one of our favourite all-time artists and one of the greatest voices in neo-soul even though these days she never actually releases much music. This part, part one, subtitled Fourth World War, gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Motown and features plenty of Erykah's dark and trippy vocals, smoky soul sounds, candle-lit atmospheres and thought-provoking lyrics.

Review: Now working under the alias Balaphonic, long serving Manchester artist Danny Ward steers his ear for percussion into something warm, rhythmically rich and hypnotic. He opens with 'Sunflowers in Dub (Deep Summer Mix)', where sitar, harmonica and fluttering keys glide across a humid dubscape, then folds in sun-dappled samba on 'Disorganics (All Strings Mix)', all brushed guitars and delicate groove. 'Six Fingers' leans deeper into Afro-Cuban melancholy, while 'Udders' chops South American drums into psychedelic loops, teasing out low-end heft. A standout collaboration with Ocean Waves Brasil, 'Oxum' blends gentle acid with dreamy textures and Afro-Brazilian swing, before closer 'Bloco Manco' lets off the brakes-delay-lashed, bass-heavy and totally locked-in. It's music built for dancefloors, but with the patience and touch of a drummer who knows when to let things breathe.

Review: Mande jazz ensemble Balimaya Project return with much anticipated second album When The Dust Settles on New Soil in partnership with Jazz re:freshed. The group has a magical big band sound that is expanded on here with plenty of personal expression running the emotional gamut from rage to love, grief to joy. Once again they combine the African rhythms of their roots with contemporary London jazz energy as they celebrate Black power and community togetherness. Review: Melbourne funk and soul talents The Bamboos have now been blazing their own trail for almost a quarter of a century. This Is How You Do It makes their 11th studio album and shows the nine piece collective still has plenty to say for itself. Although at times this hints at a new direction, the album also bares all the hallmarks fans have come to love and expect from the group with Lance Ferguson's soulful production and effortless groove paired with the potent vocals of Kylie Auldist. Review: American songwriter and composer Patricia Barber's marked her breakthrough with Modern Cool, an album driven by her captivating take on The Doors' 'Light My Fire.' Her performance of the album at The Jazz Standard caught the attention of Blue Note's Bruce Lundvall and lead to a celebrated run of releases and international acclaim. Modern Cool became an audiophile favourite thanks to Jim Anderson's meticulous recording and Barber's sharp songwriting and artistry, and it still sounds super here as reissued by Impex on VR900-D2-pressed 180-gram vinyl. It's the perfect way to enjoy a real jazz classic.

Review: Spanish funk-rock group Barrabas formed in the 70s and had big success through that decade and the next. Drummer and producer Fernando Arbex lead the band and fomented a fusion of Latin rock and jazz-funk initially, before moving into a more disco orientated sound later on. Power was the band's second album and it came in 1973 with country-tinged tunes such as 'Boogie Rock', high speed funk workouts like 'Keep On Moving' and then more jazzy library sounds such as 'The Horse.' The second half of the album touches on busy dance floor funk like 'Casanova' and more stripped back and deep cuts like 'Children.'

Review: The indestructible Ray Barretto demonstrated superb skills on this record back in 1973. His band were at the forefront of the new Afro-Cuban musical movement that was emerging and became known as salsa. His composer skills were well known after he wrote 'Cocinando' and his band were also much loved in the live area though Johnny Rodriguez on bongo and cencerro, bassist Dave Perez, pianist Louis Cruz, along with trumpeter Rene Lopez and vocalist Adalberto Santiago all left him soon after. HIs Indestructible album is his most remarkable, with a constant sense of flow to the rhythms from front to back.

Review: Images And Anthems - Book I is an album by Lars Bartkuhn from back in 2008. The artist who is also known for his work in Passion Dance Orchestra and as Laurentius is a master of super cool jazz and laid-back lounge electronics that have hints of 80s nostalgia without being too slavish. Originally this one came only on CD and digitally and now it makes its first foray onto vinyl thanks to First on Vinyl out of Japan. Tracks like the lush 'Pulse' are gloriously airy and spring-like montages while there is a little woozy romance to 'Before It Enters My Mind'.

Review: Tresor Magnetique is a treasure trove of unreleased tracks by the late great Francis Bebey-an international artist whose visionary work defies time and continues to add standout energy to eclectic DJ sets everywhere. These recordings have been digitised from fragile tapes found by his son and restored at Abbey Road Studios and blend pygmy flutes, drum machines, folk guitars and electronic textures in daring, genre-defying ways. Review: Bebo Valdes was born in Cuba but is now celebrated as a pioneer of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz all around the globe. A trained pianist, arranger and conductor, he collaborated with legends like Olga Guillot, Celia Cruz, Josephine Baker and Nat King Cole and a trip to Haiti in the 1940s sparked his interest in African-rooted rhythms, which he then incorporated into his music while performing at Havana's Tropicana cabaret. After surviving a near-fatal bomb explosion during a performance, he left Tropicana to find success on Cuban television before emigrating to Mexico and eventually Sweden. Bebo Valdes Y Su Gran Orquesta is a wonderful window into his colourful rhythms and lively sounds.

A Tabua De Esmeralda is the 11th album the great singer-songwriter and guitarist recorded and it came back in 1974. It was soon lapped up by fans and critics alike for its timeless blending of samba rock with his unique alchemy and sonic satire and found Ben redefined the vocal style he has showcased on previous work Forca Bruta. This time his vocals occasionally go off-grid and sit behind the beats to make for an alluring effect, while the album was also the last to use guitar quite as extensively.

Review: Tropical is Brazilian samba legend Jorge Ben Jor's fifteenth album and it blends unreleased tracks with reimagined covers like 'Taj Mahal' and 'Pais Tropical.' This superb mix of tunes embraces more pop and Western influences than before and hints at his later shift toward the World-Dance sound of the 1980s. Originally aimed at international markets, the album wasn't released in Brazil until 1977 but ably showcased Ben Jor's immense talent as he skilfully revitalises familiar tunes with fresh arrangements that capture the spirit of the times. This era-defining record from Brazil is yet another must-have.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

Joined by bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker for this 1965 recording, this one is a typically noir and cigarette-smoked tour through both Evans originals and known standards, from 'Israel' and 'Elsa to 'Come Rain Or Come Shine'.

It's a live recording that had Eddie Gomez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums and was captured on June 20, 1975, at Oil Can Harry's in Vancouver for the radio host Gary Barclay and his CHQM jazz show. The tape has lay lost for almost 50 years but now, after audio restoration by Plangent Processes it sounds as fresh as it ever did. Grammy winning writer, radio host and journalist Neil Tesser has also penned all new liner notes to accompany this special release.

Review: Released to great fanfare in 1961, the second album by the original Bill Evans trio showcases their many years of refined synergy and pioneering three-way interaction. The seminal group featured pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian and here they presented intimate renditions of jazz standards as well as three other, new compositions that became emblematic of their signature sound. Evans himself later cited this recording as one of his personal favourites in a vast catalogue which adds even more significance to its place in jazz history, as well as being a damn good listen that highlighted their exceptional musical chemistry.

Review: Italian crooner Mario Biondi is well revered amongst those who know and for his new album, for the first time, he fully embraces the style that inspired his career. He does so by serving up a mix of great covers and plenty of superb unreleased songs that are embellished with help from plenty of friends and peers from both the Italian and international jazz scenes including Paolo Fresu, Stefano Di Battista, Rosario Giuliani, Francesco Cafiso. It was all recorded in Palermo with local players and the whole thing has a noir edge but warm vibe that plays out coherently from front to back despite the range of sounds touched upon.

Review: Nat Birchall is one of the finest contemporary sax players around, He can do it all, from solo albums where his instrument takes the lead in seductive suites of meditative jazz, to more cosmically mind work with a band via superb reggae fusions. After last year's well removed Ancient Africa he is back with a third all-solo outing that finds him playing all the instruments himself. It's an homage to the king of tenor sax, John Coltrane, as the title suggests, and included are classic 'Trane compositions 'Acknowledgement' from A Love Supreme, 'India' from his Impressions LP and 'Dahomey Dance' from Ole.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: Nature documentary series The Living Planet very much captured the imagination of Raoul Bjorkenheim back in 1986. It featured erupting volcanoes and plumes of molten lava and some of that drama and energy is captured in this fine jazz album which now gets a new extended reissue. Bjorkenheim studied at the Helsinki Conservatory for a year and the Berklee College of Music in Boston for three years and worked with composer and drummer Edward 'Eetu' Vesala. For this album, he played with reed virtuosos Jorma Tapio and Tapani Rinne, bassist Sampo Lassila and drummers Michel Lambert and Heikki 'Lefty' Lehto. It is a hot and raw record that contains an album's worth of previously unheard material.

Review: The Blue Rhythm Combo was a collective of musicians from Barbados including Bert "Panta" Brown, Clarence Thompson, Don Allamby, Jeff Grannum, Kurt Dallaway, Leroy Williams and more. They were active in the seventies and in 1972 dropped their Magumba album. It's a fiery fusion of funk, Latin and soul music that is a cult classic amongst collectors. As such, originals are hard to find and will cost upwards of 300 quid so this reissue is well timed. From the strident horns of 'BRC's Groove' to the ska-like swagger and reggae overtones of 'Mother And Child Reborn' this is a great summertime listen.
