T Plays It Cool
Cat: PROT 7143. Rel: 21 Dec 21
T Plays It Cool (4:27)
T Stands For Trouble (4:48)
Review: Those who've not checked Marvin Gaye's 1972 soundtrack to blaxploitation movie Trouble Man - a score that was heavily inspired by earlier works by his contemporaries Isaac Hayes (Shaft) and Curtis Mayfield (Superfly) - may only have heard the vocal version of the film's title track, a song that has featured on many retrospectives of the Detroit soul great's work. This "45" takes a different approach, showcasing two of the album's instrumental highlights. On the A-side you'll find 'T Plays it Cool', a synth-sporting slab of wah-wah-guitar-powered jazz/funk fusion blessed with some seriously good sax solos. Turn to the B for 'T Stands For Trouble', a more emotive and laidback number that features more complex horn arrangements, a head-nodding groove and more vintage synthesizer sounds.

Wouldn't Be The Same
Cat: NP 38. Rel: 18 Jan 23
Wouldn't Be The Same (feat Matt Antunes - Special UK extended) (3:57)
I Can Prove It (feat Leon Beal - Special UK mix) (4:30)
Review: Yuki "Monolog" Kanesaka is a soul, jazz and r&b producer who is based between Boston and Tokyo, and Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi is widely regarded as one of Japan's best remixes. Together they are Golden Bridge and they make timeless soul sounds steeped in magical musicianship and lush production. Elements of greats like Herbie Hancock and the Mizell Brothers loom large over these tunes which come from their eponymous 2019 album. 'Wouldn't Be The Same' opens in funky and stepping soul style with neat bass riffs. The B-side is a cover of Tony Etoria's 'I Can Prove It' that swells the heart with its upbeat grooves, yearning vocal and rich strings.

Adventures Begin (3:15)
Estrellas (3:38)
Review: Spasibo Records has been busy lining up plenty of great funk sounds that all seem to be dropping at once. One of them is this limited yellow and red marbled vinyl from The Great Revivers. The band hail from St Petersburg in Russia and these two instrumental tunes are perfect examples of their lush library funk sound. Both were recorded pre-pandemic back in 2019 at a vintage studio in an old church. The organs really shimmer and bring the heat to opening cut 'Adventures Begin' while 'Estrellas' dial down into a more late night and intimate atmosphere before the funky breaks and neat guitar riffs come on with full force.

Classiques Volume Nineteen

Ingram - "Music Has The Power" (GU Plays The Keys) (8:32)
James Brown - "Take Me Higher" (GU Remaster) (5:17)
Meco - "Cantina Boogie" (GU Mild edit & Bottom) (9:51)
Review: Glenn Underground has been living and breathing and shaping Chicago house music for as long as we can remember. His GU Classics label is a place where he drops his own edits of special talks from across the years and many different styles. This latest edition starts with him playing keys on Ingram's starring jazz-funk-disco banger 'Music Has The Power.' After that comes James Brown's 'Take Me Higher' with some club-ready drums extended for modern floors. Last of all is a subtle rework of Meco's super vibey and percussive, chord-laced and swinging 'Cantina Boogie.'

Love Runaway (feat Tamara Lee - Ray Mang reprise) (5:30)
Review: Don't take our word for it; the one-and-only Bill Brewster himself described the enigmatic Guruku's 'Love Runaway' (featuring Tamara Lee) as an absolutely essential release that channels Prelude Records circa 1982, and was equally impressed by Ray Mang's stellar remix. The late night, neon-lit dancefloor moves of the original receive not one, but two makeovers by UK disco don Mang, the main one reworking those boogie-down vibes into something even more magical. It's followed by a more drum heavy Reprise, while slick second offering 'Crimped Hair' features LA funk/R&B artist Harriet Brown providing guest vocals.

Review: Jules Buckley is a Grammy award-winning composer, curator and conductor who has linked up with long time collaborative partners Chris Wheeler, Heritage Orchestra and percussion collective Ghost-Note for this lively new full length. The record has been two years in the making and pays homage to the pillars of hip hop and mainstays of the breaking scene, but with plenty of added flair. There are plenty of dance floor ready breaks, as well as more airy and upbeat soul groovers like the excellent 'Space Funk.' Though the backbones of these tunes follow familiar genres rules, the flair on top is what makes them so special.

Review: Following the success of "Seventy Seven", Gerald Bonnegrace returns with another super-immersive journey into jazz and Afro tickled roots. Taking off where the last album left us, our focus is squared plainly on the authenticity of the sound, production and arrangement. From the Bob James' motif right at the end of "Once Upon A Time" to the more languid Hathaway-style narrative of "Manikou" via the heavy freneticism of "Jam Session" and Vadim-esque French hip-hop licks of "One Nation", there's much more consistency than the album title suggests.

Review: Christian Gaubert's 'Last Exit' is a French soul masterpiece. It has been carefully remastered from the original tapes and reissued here so standout rare groove gems 'Sweet Maryline' and 'Sweet and Fool Like a Child' sound better than ever. It's an album that showcases the great skills of the prolific arranger and composer Gaubert alongside guest spots from some of the key contemporaries in the French jazz scene of the 70s. Boogie and funk help colour the grooves with the likes of 'Going Ups & Coming Downs' being deep down and delicious jams with killer baselines and lavish strings that cannot fail to light up your life and swell your heart.

Review: It's always a good day when we hear something new from acclaimed saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator Camilla George. This third album is another rich, highly cultural mix of afrobeat, hip hop, jazz and Camilla's virtuosic alto saxophone sounds. Plenty of vital talents from the vibrant London scene feature as well as Birmingham's finest MC Lady Sanity. The record is dedicated to Camilla's Ibibio tribe of south eastern coastal Nigeria, and says the artist, is "a celebration of roots, creation and community" and that certainly comes over.

Ghetto Brothers Power (2:29)
Review: If you listen to those who know about such things, then The Ghetto Brothers' Power-Fuerz album is one of the best-ever Latin funk records. The group formed on the streets of New York City's South Bronx in the late 1960s and often called themselves a gang as much as a band. They were keen supporters of Puerto Rican nationalism and were motivated to help uplift fellow Latino and Black men in their community. Back in 1971 is when they released their one and only album and it had little to no promotion and was only distributed locally so is one of those that has since taken on cult status.

Review: Some superb musical archaeology here, as The Artless Cuckoo presents an album of rediscovered 1980s recordings from obscure German outfit Ghia, including a smattering that the trio made whilst living in Spain between 1986 and '88. Some of the tracks were reportedly recorded using a porta-studio style four-track, but you'd never be able to tell thanks to the fine mastering job. Musically, it's an undeniable sun-soaked affair that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between horizontal electrofunk, instrumental Balearic synthpop, Mediterranean jazz-funk, Afro-cosmic and more energetic, dancefloor-focused flavours. It's the sort of thing that Nu Genea would rightfully be praised for releasing, except it was recorded 'back in the day' rather than earlier this year. Terrific stuff!

Review: Ghost Funk Orchestra was conceived back in 2016 when producer Seth Applebaum dropped two EPs to mark the start of the project. The tunes now presented here were one-man-band, reel-to-reel tape recorded experiments that draw on all the many different sounds Applebaum was most into at the time. As such there is a ton of reverb here with Latin-style percussion, tape-saturated drums, weirdo time signatures, surf guitar sounds and Spanish-language female vocals. The music has been remastered for this proper full length release which invites you deep into Seth's unique musical world.

Review: Building on the success of their A New Kind of Love album back in 2022, Ghost Funk Orchestra ventures further into the realms of film music, exotica, and psychedelic surf rock with new record A Trip To The Moon.' It was written with the aim of creating a richly layered and collaged listening experience with myriad elements waiting to be discovered with each new spin, and they have certainly achieved that. Featuring fuzzy guitars drenched in spring reverb and horns arranged in a studio big band style, it offers a blend of garage rock attitude and big compositions with influences like Eddie Palmieri and Dusty Springfield to be found within. It also features real recorded transmissions from the Apollo moon missions weaved throughout the tracks as a tale is told of a woman left stranded on Earth by her cosmonaut partner.

Review: Z invite respected crate digger Glass to compile their third compendium and he's done a grand job, building on the already commendable reputation the series has developed. Expanding the boogie and funk reputation of the series he's included rare reggae (Harold Butler's soft-skank "Do It Anyway") and infectious, frenetic Afrofunk from Manteca. Other essential rarities include Glass's own edit of Nadie La Fond's soppy wet talkbox orgy "Three Way Situation" and the drum and piano drama of The Impossible Dreamers' "Spin".

At the time, the collective recorded just one album, the self-titled Gold Connection, which has finally been given the reissue treatment. Review: Some 16 years after playing their first gigs in their home city, Oakland outfit The Grease Traps have finally got round to recording a debut album. Recorded in the legendary Kelly Finigan Transistor Sounds studio and mixed by Orgone producer Sergio Rios (a sticker for analogue authenticity), Solid Ground is a heavy and righteous romp that presents the eight-piece outfit as retro-futurist champions of a frazzled, flash-fried and exciting heavy funk sound that variously draws influence from vintage psychedelic soul, the Meters, Sly & The Family Stone, deep funk, the JB's and what they describe as "sweet lowrider soul". Production-wise, it sounds like something that could have been produced at the turn-of-the-80s, while the band's compositions get the most from their talented players and lead vocalist. Funk album of 2021? It's certainly up there.

They know how to serve up the most potent dancefloor bombs for DJs who like to make an impact and after countless 7"s to that effect, they now drop an entire album's worth of high-grade tackle. 3rd Drop from this Russian quartet takes in 12 of their most signature sounds, from the rolling and cosmic-tinged open 'Adventures Begin' via the bristling broken beats of 'Not Good, Too Bad.' There is a 60s American feel to many of these cuts as well as some more slow and sentimental moments like the organ-laced melancholy of 'From Darkness To The Light'.

Review: Since first pitching up on Jazzman in 2011, eight-piece psychedelic jazz combo The Greg Foat Group has caused something of a stir. This second album for the crate-digging specialists is every bit as good as their debut full length, Dark Is The Sun. At times, it sounds like Ennio Morricone and Harold Budd making loose jazz-breaks, at others an almighty freak-out in the company of Afro-busting Blaxploitation detectives. There are quietly beautiful moments ("Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 3"), straight-up late night jazz movements ("For Breath A Tarry", "Cast Adrift"), and breezy, vibraphone-heavy '60s grooves ("The Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 5"). Throughout, it's beautifully played and lovingly produced, with Foat's impeccable piano playing taking centre stage.

Original copies have tended to be hard to come by, so this Record Store Day reissue from Now Again Records, which comes complete with a booklet telling the story of the 1970 set, should be an essential purchase. It's a curiously psychedelic affair, with string-laden, near symphonic moments (see the almost entirely beat-free "Conclusions" being joined by cuts that explore spiraling funk-rock ("Sitting Here On A Tongue") and acid-fired psychedelic rock ("Why Can't I Go Back").

Review: Not all dusty obscurities are worth revisiting, but library music ensemble Gruppo Sound's 1987 set Dreams For Sax most definitely is. Rooted in mid-80s jazz-funk, 'pages from Ceefax' easy listening, glossy electrofunk and early '80s disco, it's a genuinely joyous collection of jaunty instrumental workouts that should delight Balearic crate diggers, sample-hunting beat-makers and synth-loving disco heads. Given the title, you'll be unsurprised to find that saxophone features prominently, but it never dominates; in fact, the range of virtuoso piano solos and the loved-up nature of the Gruppo Sound's approach makes much more of a lasting impression.

Review: The wonderful Our Label Records Vol. 1 celebrated two decades of rare funk 45s from the imprint's storied history and it now gets reissued for avid collectors and DJs who missed out first time around. Founded in 2005 by brothers Tom and Gu in London, the label soon got international acclaim by distributing tracks worldwide and establishing a niche for uptempo funk and soulful grooves. The compilation features hits like The New Mastersounds' 'Give Me A Minute Pt. 1 & Pt. 2' and Diazpora's 'Song 2'. With contributions from Mothergroove, Sir Ali Bengali, and Renegades Of Jazz, plus an exclusive track by The King Rooster, this release is vital to all proper funk heads.

Review: Brazilian musician, songwriter and producer Pedro Guinu debuts on the Razor-N-Tape label with a rich new album that mixes up MPB, samba, Latin disco and international sounds into something brilliantly vibrant and colourful. Vocals embellish each tune, with wriggling basslines and funky percussion all designed to get you dancing. It's a mix of classic Latin influences and contemporary production which makes this record so hot. Echoes of Marcos De Valle and Jorge Ben ring through samba shufflers like 'Portao De Ferro' and immediately appeal as a result.

Review: "UFO" is a killer debut from one of the craziest bands ever - Guru Guru. Mani Neumeier (drums), Uli Trepte (bass) and Ax Genrich (guitar) get together for what some still consider as the ultimate 'trip' record. This Wah Wah release is for fans of Can, Kraftwerk and Faust.

Review: Heavenly Sweetness has always dealt in music for the soul that is drawn from the worlds of funk, soul and jazz. This new collection of such tunes is another testament to that with a heavily international and world bent. Oodles of Latin, hip hop and Afro vibes pervade the tunes by Guts aka Fabrice Franck Henri alongside a whole host of collaborators. He's a super prolific talent who has put out some ten albums in just over a decade and Estrellas is one of his best. It comes on six sides of delicious wax and takes you on a trip to sunny climates from Cuba to Brazil.

Review: According to the label, Nigerian singer Kiki Gyan's star "didn't burn long, but it burned bright." As a member of Afro funk super group Osibisa at 15; he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world at the tender age of 21. In 1983 he 'dived head first into the New York party scene', took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record Feelin' Alright. All the artist's trademark elements are present and in full effect on this LP. The album contains irresistible elements of electronic funk, boogie and disco with the track "Rosemary" becoming a hit across Nigeria and Ghana. Kiki Gyan would never quite better this moment, for his addictions eventually took hold and he died aged only 47 at a church in Ghana. This very album 'remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation.'
