Review: ** REPRESS ** Officially titled Wild Oats Proudly Presents Da Sampla West Side Sessions, you can tell straight away how much work Kyle Hall's label has put into remastering and reissuing this 1997 heat from Anthony Shake Shakir. Screen printed cover art, bonus material on an accompanying 7" and gloriously lo-fi photocopied insert - all these elements just add an additional sheen of "must-haveness" to some archival Motor City brilliance from Shake. All four rollercoaster rides through Detroit rhythms from the 12" Shakir released under his Da Sampla alias on the now defunct M3 imprint are present and sound just as vital now, not least the dizzying kaleidoscopic sensory assault of "Track 4". Two additional cuts of material produced by both Shakir and Hall occupy the red hand stamped 7", veering between the relentless carnival judder of "GJ" and the sparser alien sounds of "Frictional Beat #6" - both of which are complemented by locked grooves. Given the hugely popular nature of Wild Oats output to date, this won't stick around for long.

Dusk
After Dusk (solo by Jon Dixon)
Review: The trans-Atlantic pairing of Kyle Hall and Funkineven inaugurated their Funkinevil collaboration with the much anticipated plate Night, probably the first of many twelve inch shaped emissions to surface in the coming year. Setting the tone with the dextrously smokey "Intro", this twelve inch essentially pairs off the rugged, flatulent sounding DJ tool that is the title track against its smoother B Side counterpart and fans of either producer will need little additional persuasion to indulge here. The way that the percussion is almost spat out of the speakers at you on "Night" is just one reason why the track lives up to their new name, with the intermittent distorted chants of "evil" voiced throughout making for a neat reminder. In contrast, "Dusk" lets in more of the boogie infused swinging Eglo lightness, the moment those keys rise through and align being a mere shade short of sublime. "After Dusk" proves to be a fitting final act, all too brief but allowing Underground Resistance Timeline band leader Jon Dixon centre stage to show off his keyboard skills.

Review: With their first team-up on Wild Oats still on heavy rotation, the Funkinevil pairing of Kyle Hall and FunkinEven return for another quartet of tracks combining some of the finest young minds of Detroit and London. Following an arpeggiated intro that sets the scene with its vocoder vignette, "Ignorant" provides a heavy-set piece of machine funk with some serious swing in its step; "In The Grid" meanwhile injects some serious Motor City soul into proceedings with a combination of sweeping pads and raw drum machine beats, leading into the enveloping analogue wash of "Outro". More fire from the Funkinevil guys - don't sleep.

Attack! (5:00)
Modified (5:18)
Review: Kyle Hall has successfully transitioned from bright new hope to absolute Motor City mainstay. His sound is indebted to the rich traditions of his home town of Detroit but also filled with plenty of freshness. For this latest EP he once again fires up his MPC and lays down rough edged beats with soulful synths drenched with real feelings. That's certainly yer case on opener 'JJ Dreams Of Nippon' while fellow 313 legend Amp Fiddler steps up on' Expression' to lay down one of his killer Rhodes solos. 'Attack!' is classic Kyle Hall - bumping beats with swing and skip, and freeform synth lines that are conversational in style. The dirt and looseness of 'Modified' makes this another unmissable EP from Kyle Hall.

Pieces To Share (Kyle Hall & Steve Lehane mix) (3:14)
Nothing To Fear (4:00)
Review: Some ultra-limited business here from Kyle Hall, which remarkably marks his first release of 2019. The Detroiter is in fine form from the off, first peppering a hip-hop tempo "beatdown" groove with 8-bit sounds, jazz-funk synth doodles and rich Fender Rhodes motifs on "Rising" before breaking up the beats and channeling Kaidi Tatham/Dego on the warm and luscious "Full Play". Turn to the flip for the similarly inclined, loose and languid, analogue-heavy melodiousness of "Pieces To Share" and the delay-laden sunrise shimmer of "Nothing To Fear", a glistening and smile-inducing number that's almost overwhelmingly positive.

Review: Leading Detroit house practitioner Kyle Hall's Forget The Clock label might be home to some of his best work. This fourth EP is gorgeously jazzy deep house offering. The drums swing seductively, the chords are draped over the whole track to bring warmth and soul and the leads ring out with real meaning. All that is certainly yer case not he majestic a-side 'The Polychronic,' while 'Str8 Rollin' picks up the pace a little while remaining deeply touching. Last of all comes the late night soul and groovy bump n grid of 'Ghost Dog,' another perfectly warm and lived in tune with that analogue texture we all love.

Review: The four tracks here - repressed by dint of public demand and on sumptuous blue vinyl this time round - will delight house and techno heads alike, with the latter probably gravitating to the grittier off killer shuffle of 'Weed or Majik', while the A-side boasts the smoother, more soulful 'Moveable', the kind of slower house gear that Weatherall championed at his 'Love From Outer Space' night. A calming vocal sample and tooting saxes join the string-swaddled, crunchily floorfilling groove of 'In Ya Mind' meanwhile, and 'Turquoise Wave' clocks in as stripped down and serene. Review: Last year certainly felt like one where a new generation of Detroit heroes came of age, even if some of them having been hard at it for the best part of two decades. Kyle Hall is obviously at the forefront of that wave and as such, many of his finer past moments will be in need of represses to reach a newly expanded pubic. This is one such case, equally big on rough edged rhythm as it on soul from opener 'JJ Dreams Of Nippon' to 'Expression' featuring Amp Fiddler, the beat bumps of 'Attack!' and the loosely delivered swagger of 'Modified'.

Baci Ballers (6:19)
Big Moma Tech (5:42)
Ground Up Dub (5:53)
Review: Kyle Hall has been hailed as the new boy on the Detroit block for some time now, forgetting perhaps that he has been putting records out since he was 17 - some 15 years ago. The three tracks on the 'Baci Ballers' EP show he's capable of holding his own among the biggest of big hitters, taking house music and giving it a nicely grimy makeover that will ensure these beauties a place in many a techno set too. The title track has a triumphant, rampantly rampaging vibe to it, a throbbing, insistent bassline slapped down by meaty handclaps and brutal hi-hats. 'Big Moma Tech' adds a smattering of female vocal as bleeps and jazzy keys battle it out like Stevie Wonder and LFO having a jam. 'Ground Up Dub' completes the set, based around a panther-like bass keyboard riff that anchors the track while the rhythmic quotient surges and retreats gloriously. Three tracks that differ in everything but their playability and quality.

Review: Influential Detroit house don Kyle Hall returns to his Forget The Clock EP for a limited edition clear purple vinyl featuring two hugely effective new tracks. 'Taormina' opens up with typically well-swung drums and catchy syncopation that lock you in while the wooden hits and elastic bassline flesh out the details. Free-form synth lines of course add the colour and soul. 'Dream Machine' is another effortlessly appealing house cut with a raw, perfectly undercooked edge and one of Hall's signature nimble basslines and conversational synth leads that are smeared and twisted into all sorts of cosmic and emotive forms.

Weed Or Majik (6:22)
Review: Detroit dance luminary Kyle Hall is an unstoppable - un-toppable - force, impressing us over the years not with grandiose displays of techno-bravado but rather measured demonstrations of groove and syncopation. Hall hails from Detroit but finds just as strong inspirations in the tricky essences of deep house and broken beat, emergent from the UK. 'Good Hado' tops up this now seam-bulging record bag with four more bursty metropolitan movements, the first of which is, fittingly, called 'Movable'; a prime piece of dance real estate indeed, standing firm whilst also proving ambulatory. Then there's 'In Ya Mind', which affirms the partial truth of mind before matter, while the B1 'Turqouise Wave' ups the pad amplitude for a knockier modular jazz workout. And finally, we end on a green hempy heave with 'Weed Or Majik', whose unhurried snaps, claps and zaps imply the temporary risk, yet often equal reward, of confusing the two.

Review: Detroit house doesn't get more authentic than when served up by Motor City maestro Kyle Hall. The Wild Oats and Forget The Clock boss is in superb form once again here across four new cuts of Technically Deep house. 'Sit In Dat' has its head amongst the stars and it's roughed up drums firmly planted on the floor. 'Gherkin Roots' is more rickety and unconventional, with analogue clatter and synth stabs making for an unsettling mood. 'Alignment' cruises on warm machine soul and 'Pounce' cuts loose with a twisted dub sounds, spangled drums and raw as you like percussion.

Review: This is a welcome reissue of one of Kyle Hall's most brilliant recent outings. It came first in 2020 on the label he founded in 2019, Forget The Clock, and sounds as good now as it ever did. 'Shark' is a louche deep house jam with signature dusty drums and noodling synths, then 'Vexed' gets more club-ready with its raw drum stomps and shades of Larry Heard and Ron Trent loom large over the classy house depths of 'Distant'. 'Slam Deep' is a minimal and skeletal beat knocked out on an MPC, you imagine, with bleeping synth pulses and 'Channel & Transmission' closes out the varied EP with scruffy, shuffling house drums and popping synth colours.

Each track has its own exquisite quality and soulfulness. Create Your Own is a beautiful deep uplifting tune with lush pad arrangements and warm bassline that is ingeniously layered over though provoking shifting percussive rhythms, while tomorrow Is the Day is sure to smash the dance floor with is driving four to the floor house groove and crazy synth line - definitely a must have for all house heads! Finally, One Ribbon is a physiological, spiritual piece which is hypnotic to the soul and sure to become another deep house classic from Moods & Grooves.

A World Of New Old
Review: Wild Oats come through with a much needed repress of their debut release, the Worx of Arp EP from label founder Kyle Hall. Originally released back in 2008 at a time when Hall was still a teenager, it's intriguing to take another look over this work and see how the Wild Oats boss has progressed as a producer. Naturally there's a roughness in execution that comes with youth and the soul and hip hop influences are perhaps a bit more overt in the four tracks but there's a demonstration of potential talent that's been developed in recent years and exploited fully in 2013 with Kyle Hall's debut LP The Boat Party. For those that missed out first time round (or one the 2009 repress) the Worx of Arp EP represents an important document in recent Detroit music history.

Review: Wild Oats proudly present the new EP from Kyle Hall entitled "Equanimity". This release marks the 10 year anniversary of Wild Oats and its only fitting that we celebrate with a release from the label boss himself on tonight's full moon. Along with the engineering treatment from "Chicago's very own" (C.V.O.) deep house legend, Glenn Underground, "Equanimity" takes on a new foundational sound and assembly that inspires some philosophical thoughts below:

Katastematic Pleasure is the epicurean philosophical concept that the magnitude of pleasure reaches its limit at the removal of all pain. In a sonic sense, this connects to the idea of subtractive equalization or the removal of unpleasant frequencies i.e. taking away the part of the sound you don't enjoy as much, in turn, leaving the pleasurable parts of the sound intact. Katestematic pleasure is about creating cleanliness and clarity in your life so that your experience is pleasurable by simply the virtue of being.

Solar/Lunar Duality: The Vinyl EP is divided into two planetary bodies. Side A i The "Solar Side" and Side B i "The Lunar" Side. The Sun's energy is one that is everlasting as long as its shining all that receives its rays will continue its growth and abundance. The Moon represents the nature of receptivity the feminine principle which captures the light energy of the sun and reflects it back and governs our physical natural cycles and tides of the waters both internally and externally. The cycles of the moon when we decide to to be attentive to its influence we start to know when to retreat when to rest , when to repair our selves and intuitively when to bloom express our vivaciousness and attract things to ourselves.

DSP (Dear Sweet Potato) (3:07)
Review: Given the clear West London broken beat and hazy jazz-funk influences that marked out his superb 2015 album From Joy, it's perhaps unsurprising that Kyle Hall's latest seven-inch missive explores similar sonic territory. While the standout is arguably the impeccable downtempo shuffler "DSP (Dear Sweet Potato)" - all gently tumbling synth lines, stoned drum machine hits (in a slipped jazz time signature, of course) and sun-kissed chord progressions - it's undoubtedly A-side "Teacher Plant" that will get all the props. Shot through with the fireside warmth and groovy vibes of deep house, but built around dexterous broken beats and Kaidi Tatham style keys-work, it's one of the producer's most well-rounded and effective releases of recent times.

This one comes on limited edition translucent teal vinyl and was initially put out to mark the ten-year anniversary of Detroit native Hall's own Wild Oats label. In that decade he has established it as one of his hometown's finest for dusty deep house explorations. The four tracks on it are just that with a whimsical melody over bumpy beats on the opener, then more zoned-out beats on '4wrd Motion' and glitchy kicks and hits on 'No More Moon'. Last of all is the star-gazing cosmic house of 'Ghosten 4 A 2nd X'. A timeless EP for sure.

K2 Attack!
Review: Yet another bold and challenging Wild Oats 12", a label that seems to be positively affronted by some of the meekness currently getting mislabelled as techno. Zug Island sees label boss Kyle Hall team up with Detroit Underground's Kero for two productions inspired by their visit to the toxic metal factory on Zug Island, housed between Detroit and Windsor, Canada on the Detroit Rouge river. The label explicitly states this record is "intended to sonically personify the environment of Zug Island and its harmful industrial vibrations it currently has on the river, wildlife and even the humans residing there". Naturally there's an underlying anger present throughout, with "Zug Island" setting menacing 303 loops spiralling over a sparse backdrop of clattering snares. With no discernable kick drum, the track tends to float in corroded stasis, though this lack of driving force makes it a perfect track to combine with drum heavy DJ tools. Complementing this, "K2 Attack!" is less abstract but more abrasive, rising from the high frequency noise into a rigid frame of bubbling electro in the style of Detroit's techno forefathers.

Review: Interestingly, Steven "Funkineven" Julien's follow-up to 2016 debut album Fallen had two major inspirations: the musical influences offered by his extended family (hence the title, Bloodline) and the Roland TR-808 drum machine (when he started the recording process, Julien decided to pay tribute to the iconic engineer who created it, Ikutaro Kakehashi, who passed away this time last year). While the latter influence is evident throughout - particularly on the A-side's suite of heavyweight, off-kilter jack-tracks and sweaty, alien techno workouts - it's harder to know where Julien's relatives fit in. Certainly, there's woozy warmth to be found on the B-side's more open and melodious cuts, which variously touch on new-age synth-pop, vintage analogue deep house and the producer's beloved '80s soul sounds, while retaining his trademark jammed-out looseness.

Review: Modern electro phenom Steven Julien (aka. Funkineven) marks a beaming detour with his new EP 'Time/Wraap't'. The producer has never really attempted anything much like this before, fusing unpeggable trap heavies, house offhands, and plummy G-funk, touring a squeakily oiled, cyborg pan-Africa. The front cover reflects a metanoiac conversion of Julien's style, which features him posing in a seductive left lateral position; collabs with James Massiah, Yung Ethernet and Fatima go on to help cinch his status as an object of desire, around whom an inexhaustible stream of in-demand artists flurry.ABut despite the cadre, it's the closing solo 'LIL'BIT' that really grabs us; the track is an ultra-wonky outsider, where in an alien vocal mix, pitch-warped questions are asked, and immediately met with noncommittal "think so"s.

As the title suggests, The Boat Party Bonus EP is an addendum release to that album and pleasingly sees KMFH eschew any standard notion of a remix EP in favour of all new smudgy, delayed and redlining house music. Do check "12 Doors," a frazzled techno collaboration with the Bologna-based pairing Nas1, and Hall's own self styled 2k13 Mix of The Boat Party highlight "Flemmenup"!!

Review: Wild Oats dip into their archives for a much needed reissue of Kyle Hall's filter house bomb "Down!" which comes with a bonus 7"! Initially released on the WO6K 12" back in 2011 under his KMFH guise, "Down!" still easily ranks as one of Hall's finest productions, deftly weaving in some tape saturated boogie vocals amidst a wonderfully lopsided jacking groove. It's simply one of those tracks you will love to play in a set. The original flipside cut is here too, with "Xero" switching up the mode to full on carnival that's still blessed with Motor City grit. As for the 7", Our Love originally surfaced earlier this year as a treat strictly for the local wax heads, but we are happy to see it more widely available. Just listen to "Our Love" wow!

Review: Awesome oddball house from Detroit wonderkid (actually, is he still a wonderkid?) Kyle Hall. On the stamped side "Xero" rumbles along with jangling rhtyyms and outer galatic sonic squiggles, with KMFH turning down the volume intermittently with an abruptness that echoes the 'give a f*ck' mentality of fellow Detroitian KDJ. Flip over for "Down!", a heavily filtered house jam that teases in a barely decipherable vocal sample betwixt shuffling hats and a killer bumpin groove. Review: ***B-STOCK: both records have slight surface marks but in working condition ***

Wild Oats dip into their archives for a much needed reissue of Kyle Hall's filter house bomb "Down!" which comes with a bonus 7"!

Review: Some two years on from the release of his acclaimed, in-demand debut album, The Boat Party, Kyle Julian Hall delivers the follow-up From Joy. Intriguingly, the eight tracks come from the Kyle Hall archives, all recorded by the young producer before the turn of the decade, and is presented as a homage to where Kyle lived at the time in his father's basement on the west side of Detroit on Joy Rd. From the outset, Hall's second album is loose, melodious, heady and synthesizer-heavy, with broken beats and wild, experimental rhythms combining effortlessly with jazz, jazz-funk, boogie, soul, Herbie Hancock and '80s electro influences. It makes for thrilling and hugely enjoyable listening and offers proof of Hall's musicianship and ability to repackage a wide range of influences.

Review: Kyle Hall and Steven Julien have been working together on and off for a whole decade now as Funkinevil. To mark the occasion they have pulled together their first two releases - namely 2012's 'Night / Dusk' and 2013's 'Ignorant' - on one new double album that very much sums up their raw house sound. The Detroit-London duo draw on plenty of their hometown's signature aesthetics, from well swung drums to soulful synths, and the results are still fresh sounding and captivatingly deep. Importantly, all these years later, there is still real emotional punch in these tunes as well as damn good grooves. Essential stuff from this vital pair.

Review: We don't half love a bit of Steven Julien, the artist formally known as Funkineven. And this new EP arrives just at the right time as the days brighten, the sun heats up and cruising day-time funk, house and boogie blends are all you want to pump out of your retro 3 series with the top down. 'Time' has distinctly 80s flavours with its bright chords and beats, 'Ultra' is more heavy with a contemporary rap/trap edge and 'Up' is a raw house cut with swinging kicks. 'Wraap't' is another crunchy and loved-up 80s street soul sound then 'Lil'bit' and 'Ballad' close out with more neon pads and retro-future melodic sparkle.

Review: Given that Steven Julien made his debut as Funkineven on Eglo way back in 2009, this debut album has been a long time coming. Since those days the London producer has shuffled between sumptuous, synth-heavy experimental boogie, rasping techno and bolshy analogue house jams. All of these styles get a look in on Fallen, alongside bumpin' deep house, smooth jazz-funk, soulful broken beat, stripped-back electro, spacey US garage, and bizarre electronic wig-outs. That many of these styles are fused, chopped-up and played around with throughout makes Fallen hard to pin down, but also hugely entertaining.
