Symphony No 5 & Karelia Suite
Symphony No 5 & Karelia Suite (180 gram audiophile vinyl LP)
Cat: AAPC 2405. Rel: 26 Sep 25
Review: In 1960, the music of Finnish Romantic music composer Jean Sibelius heard a re-rendering by The London Symphony Orchestra, this time led by prominent conductor Alexander Gibson. Outside of Sibelius' core seven symphonies, two live-performed studies of Sibelius' best known secondary works are heard here: his Fifth Symphony and the Karelia Suite. Alongside Thomas Beecham, Gibson was one of two of Britain's two most esteemed conductors, and this newly reissued set of six is true example of his idiosyncratic and voluptuous bandleading, which leads the Symphony down an entirely new path.

Review: Kudos to Freedom To Spend records for bringing this collection to the forefront, originally released on a DIY cassette only label, these early recordings from the LA-based "two-man electric minimalist band" were virtually unknown even by hardcore ambient enthusiasts. Nevertheless, Ruben Garcia and Steve Caton really helped to push the evolution of ambient music forward in the 80s, combining the then new innivation of drum machines with a minimal Steve Reich type approach to the tracks that uiltimately tempted big names like Harold Budd to collaborate and enocurage. Abstract heaven.

Gaite Parisienne
Gaite Parisienne (180 gram audiophile vinyl LP)
Cat: AAPC 1817. Rel: 26 Sep 25
Review: In late 19th to early 20th Century Paris, operettas were the order of the day. Cologne-born composer-cellist Jacques Offenbach and Boston conductor Arthur Fielder were chief conceivers of this terse micro-musical form, defined in the loosest sense as a "light opera". Like novellas, operettas are shorter, lighter-hearted commedia, featuring the occasional satirical jibe. Offenbach came first; he and Fielder began their diachronic dialogue in earnest in 1954, when the latter's 1954 rendition of Gaîte Parisienne - a 1938 ballet featuring many an Offenbach operetta - became a beloved reinterpretation. This loyal commemoration by the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Boston Symphony Hall eulogises Offenbach's superb orchestrations once more, in what has been described as one of the best RCA recordings of all time.

Review: American musician, writer and autobiographer Benoit Pioulard's Stanza project began as a winter routine in 2015, with a Telecaster, a tape recorder, and one loop per day, like audio journaling in real time. What started as brief daily sketches in shifting tunings has since expanded into a decade-long exploration of texture, memory and tone. Stanza IV arrives as the most expansive of the lot: long-form, ambient meditations shaped during a turbulent period following the release of his last album Eidetic and the death of Pioulard's father. It's the first instalment to reach vinyl, and clocks in as the 10th release on his Disques d'Honore label.

Trillium X
Cat: PMP 2501.
Review: The sixth instalment in Anthony Braxton's Trillium cycle pushes the boundaries of the operatic form into new metaphysical and improvisational dimensions. Rooted in Chicago's avant-garde tradition but unfolding via a live recording in Prague and a studio session in Darmstadt, the project spans four actsi'Voyage To The New World', 'Robots Versus Humans', 'The Three Sisters' and 'Four Disasters'ieach one housed in an abstract narrative world that operates on dream logic. Braxton, now 80, spent five years developing this work, his most ambitious opera to date. Alongside Swiss conductor Roland Dahinden and the PMP Ensemble I Orchestraione of Europe's most forward-thinking groupsihe weaves twelve solo voices through dense and shifting compositional systems. The box set includes over six hours of material, from the operatic performances themselves to behind-the-scenes footage and a feature-length documentary. This feels like a culminationian 8-CD monument to Braxton's singular synthesis of AACM-rooted jazz, experimental classical and radical improvisation.
