Deep Sea Driving EP
Deep Sea Driving EP (marbled vinyl 12")

Soul Mirror (4:43)
Deep Sea Driving (5:11)

Review: 440 Hz is an alias from French producer Maxime Simon, and he's getting his first solo 12" outing on Ellipsis following prior entries from Tom Jarmey and Aidan Francis. The vibe is trance-inflected deep house with plenty of analogue warmth, with 'Gazoline' making for an instant stand-out thanks to its intricate arrangement and sparkling production. There's some cheeky garage flex sneaking into 'Soul Mirror', in a style which should appeal to fans of Bicep and the like. This is melodically charged contemporary club music with a refined, polished veneer which should comfortably glide between tech house and UKG sets without disturbing the flow.

Watch It (5:14)
Review: The Club of Jacks label has found real favour with house heads everywhere. It's been slow in getting to six releases thanks in part to the pandemic but the quality of the music has never been an issue. This is a second EP of 2022 from the eponymous production team and after garage influences last time out, here they bring hardcore deep house. 'The Hoovers Track' has raw rave synth stabs, 'Fall On Me' rides on bouncy drums with yelping 90s vocals, 'Rub-A-Dub' has a funky 2-step sound and 'Watch It' gets sleazy with some face-melting bass.

Push Past It (4:20)
Ronin (4:27)
Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Maximum respect!

Review: UK's All My Thoughts label has built up a strong reputation the past half-decade. Fans of the label point to it alongside a few others as the perfect blend of house and techno music. Edmondson is equally as strong with a handful of releases that have also garnered high praise for. Vanarama houses four examples of deep house that bridge garage music and dance music to make them both futuristic, deep and fun. We really like the wide range of moods in this EP. All My Thoughts has another winner! Only 80 copies in total so be quick!

EZ Come (4:31)
EZ Go (4:58)
Z Luv (Mark Hawkins remix) (5:35)
Review: It's a rather remarkable 100 up for the Hot Haus label as EZ jam comes through with four fierce cuts of potent garage and house. The opener has a classic vocal sample reworked in an all new groove framework and sure to do plenty of damage. 'Take It EZ' is a more minimal and stripped out jungle rhythm with super quick, tight drum loops taking you ever higher. 'EZ Come' is another post-jungle affair with a flurry of drums, hurried drums and hits and a sense of urgency that you cannot escape. Last of all, the relentless Mark Hawkins remixes 'Z Luv' into a slamming minimal banger that eventually erupts on old school piano chords.

Tough Cloud (5:37)
Review: Chris Gialanze brings plenty of dancefloor clout to this fresh drop on the Beeyou label. The title cut 'Gunna Bee' is already one that has been doing the rounds and doing the damage recently so it's great it finally gets a proper release on vinyl. As well as coming as s dub mix, also included is 'So Criminal' which is a steely and metallic garage infused tech cut, while 'Tough Cloud' entirely switches things up with downtempo and breakbeats combining in old school post-rave or second room fashion to provide a great comedown after the main room fun. As such this is an EP that shows Gialanze has greta style and versatility no matter what he's making.

What's That (Refix) (7:05)
Review: It's hard to keep up with the hugely prolific output of UK don Burnski and his several different labels these days but one thing is for sure - Pilot keeps on serving up the goods. For its 15th release, the tech and minimal focussed label welcomes Robin Graham who opens up with the lively and colourful synths of bustling groover 'Check Me Out'. 'Spark Plug' is more business-like - the dry drums and hits overlaid with retro chord stabs that amp up the crowd and 'For You' then gets loose and funky with some twisted and sugar synths over garage-flecked beats and 'What's That' (Refix) offers a jumbled percussive sound full of dynamism.

02 (5:24)
Review: Back in 2022, James Burnham aka Burnski started a White sub-series of his much-hyped Instinct label and the first one sold out as quick as a flash. Now he is finally back with a follow-up that will likely do the same. This limited one-sided 12" slab of sonic filth features just one tune, but what a tune it is. '02' is a house cut with elements of garage percussion, old-school dirty bass, and even some trance-infused chords that chime with what's going on in the dance world right now. Some return horns at the breakdown really send it into overdrive and it's not hard seeing this one blow the roof off many a club this summer.

Act Like You're Strong (5:47)

Found Me (5:01)
Review: Londoner Jeigo has always had a knack for intricate and melancholic production. His emotive sounds span breaks, garage and dub and gave rise to a superb album Cerulean back in 2022. This new outing on Air Miles is another sophisticated one that shows some different sides. 'Fig' is a dusty and lo-fi mix of knocking, woody broken beat patterns and pitched-up vocal snippets that bring a sense of pain. 'Act Like You're Strong' is heads down, lip-curling UKG with shuffling and weighty drums and naughty bass. '3-5 Working Days' is somewhere in between - both club-ready but also with post-Burial vocals that tug at the heartstrings. There is a blissed-out feel to the optimistic melodic bubbles and angelic vocals of 'Found Me' that means the EP closes in lush fashion.

Review: DJOKO hops back into his Kolter guise after an excellent release on a split EP with Robert James for Body Movement. Now he gets the run of the record on his fourth appearance for Pilot, and he wastes no time in getting the party started with the wiggy breakbeat house trance trip of 'Seducer'. By way of contrast, 'Neintien Eyti' creates a uniquely bubbly kind of happy house with splashes of acid and breakbeat. 'Gifting' strips things back to a cool-headed garage shuffle, and then 'Closing Time' freaks the funk back in once more for some organ-led fun and games.

Losin Control (5:50)
Come To London (5:42)
Dark Gravity (7:20)
Space Jazzy (5:46)
Review: The Craft Music label is back after a one year break with some fresh new cuts by resident Marco Lazovic. It's an EP inspired by the sound of the English club scene in the nineties and noughties, labels like Good Looking Records and artists such as Mike Millrain. Opener 'Losin Control' sure is a compelling mix of electro and breaks that soars on cosmic lines with euphoric vocals in the distance. 'Come To London' has a distinctly garage feel to it with its crisp broken beats and there is more high energy but melody-rich breakbeat action in 'Dark Gravity' while 'Space Jazzy' is s super sweet and deep jungle cruiser.

Review: In Taijiquan, the principle of "fang song" represents balance, with heaviness sinking and lightness rising. Littlelake, who is a devoted Taijiquan practitioner, brings this concept to his new EP across four tracks that blend deep, heavy bass with playful, light elements. 'Tonight's the Night' kicks off with a nimble 2-step beat over weighty bass and playful vocal cuts. 'Passing By' delivers a monster speed garage vibe and 'Watch Your Mouth' mixes funky tribal breaks, soulful strings, and clever sampling. 'Lost' contrasts jackin' 909 rhythms and dub sounds with a dark Reese bassline for a gripping groove.

Review: Jack Michael has contributed plenty to garage's rich recent years on labels like One, Body Movement and Sub: Conscious. He now returns to Orbital London for four more tasty bangers. 'Mr Nice' has a low end wobble and watery synths that make for a nice sub-aquatic sound. 'South East Vice' is more skeletal and rude, with a razor sharp hi hat but silky chords bringing the vibes. There is a sci-fi menace to 'Rampage' that will make for a more edgy dance floor experience while 'The Grotty Choir' rounds out with pulsing minimal drums and kinetic kicks that are primed and ready to make you move.

Alec Falconer - "40oz" (Jack Through The Tunnel mix) (6:52)
Review: On one of his previous EPs on the Orbital London label he inaugurated, Jack Michael has shared headline billing with Harry Wills. He's decided to repeat the exercise, though this time fellow rising star Alex Falconer is the other artist involved. Each offers up an original production and a remix of the other producer's track. Michael's A-side opener "Holding Down" is an inventive, funky and hugely addictive fusion of hardcore-era breakbeats, cut-up vocal samples and raw, razor-sharp acid lines, while Falconer's accompanying remix brilliantly re-wires the track as a chunk of warped, bass-heavy, mutant two-step garage. Falconer's own "40oz" tiptoes the fine line between two-step and sub-heavy hardcore revivalism, while Michael's revision is a rave-igniting old school delight.

North Phase - "Breaks Away" (5:06)
North Phase - "Sound Connection" (6:10)
ADR - "Ned Flanders Hot Chocolate" (5:52)
ADR - "Comet Relief" (6:26)
Review: North Phase and ADR share duties on this four track split EP, each dropping two tracks, although all four of them are firm dancefloor-filling candidates. North Face's 'Breaks Away' adds a few retro rave flourishes to a beat that's a distant cousin of Zinc's '138 Trek' and a bouncy, bumping bass holding the whole thing together. 'Sound Connection' has a hypnotic charm that nods to Fluke and early Underworld, although choppier and less linear in rhythmic approach. Aside from being probably the best named track we've come across in 2023 so far, ADR's 'Ned Flanders Hot Chocolate' is skippy enough to be 4x4 garage but with its scratched asides and cheeky, funky b-line has a unique personality, while 'Comet Relief' nods to the progressive house of the early 90s with an unexpected xylophone-like twist. It's all good, as they used to say.

Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

Fine Day XXIV (extended mix Instumental) (6:01)
Fine Day XXIV (radio edit) (3:12)
Review: In terms of popularity, Opus III's 'It's A Fine Day' is such an enduring song that its staying power only leaves us to wonder what the crux of its half-life is. We'd probably wager it had been packed with sonic allotropes of bismuth-209 if it weren't for a more simple explanation: its stratospheric breakbeat construction - packed with orchestral hits, scratchy drums, burbly basslines and echoic pianos - had nailed the genre form to a T, while also working in one of the most reassuring and catchy vocal hooks in rave history from vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw. In turn a rave musical interpretation of the 1983 ballad It's A Fine Day by Mancunian poet, musician and all round eccentric legend Edward Barton, the lyrics therein capture the puce innocence of going about one's day. That a theme so quotidian should end up worked into an ultimately ecstatic, not-so-quotidian rave tune is welcomingly ironic. So too is it welcome that Opus III should still be releasing remixes and new versions of the song to this day. Here's a sick 'XXIV' version, alongside phat outta-bounds garage version from Shadow Child.

Produced with the aim of of achieving the highest-possible sound quality on vinyl, Drop At 7 PM's 'Retell Me' blends tugged strings and vocals from Celestine WC on Black Box's 'I Don't Know Anybody Else', while Todd Edwardsy speed garage backs up the B on 'Ultimate' by Osipenko Bus Stop - a slipperier choice for the heads.

Opener 'Gemini' is a high speed affair with exotic strings and neck-snapping hits. 'Kilo of Filo' is a super heavy wobbler with a fat as fuck bottom end oscillation. 'De Nata' closes out on more super crisp breakbeats that recall the genres hey day when artists like Ali B were knocking out killer mixes for Fabric. All killer no filler, as ever with this label.

Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Review: If you haven't already, it's time to start taking note of the small but well-formed Bourassa label. This third outing is taken care of by a new name to us - Prock. They sure are well-schooled in the long history of UKG but bring some of their own perspectives to these four cuts. The first has nice cut-up and choppy rhythms with some original mic work and jazzy motifs, then 'Oh Boyl' layers up the low-end wobble and plenty of cheeky percussive flair. 'Fack You 2' is a late-night pumper with turbo-bass and skewed synth work before two remixes of 'ChampSound' round out. Panera's is all crashing jungle breaks and the Private Press remix might just steal the EP at the end up with its amped-up garage-house energy.

Importance
Review: REPRESS: Berlin's Steffen Laschinski aka Rising Sun is back on his own Kristofferson Kristofferson imprint, and the fiery deep house producer returns with two explorative cuts that will surely resonate with fans of Shed and his High Power sound. "Yours" is filled with slamming breaks from start to finish and, although this is categorised as house music, we prefer to think of it as effective breakbeat for the DJ wanting to deviate a little from the 4/4 norm. On the B-side, "Importance (Essay)" takes all our attention thanks to its bass-less percussive form; what we love about the tune is its freedom of movement and total neglect for anything tool-related.

Review: Since joining forces as Soul Mass Transit System a couple of years ago, Baby J and D Jason have released a wealth of club-ready 12" singles, many of which explore their love of vintage UK garage. This EP on Vivid is a little more eclectic but no less celebratory or peak-time ready. For proof, check saucer-eyed opener 'Set You Free', where giddy old school piano stabs, stretched-out sub-bass and spinetingling female vocal samples ride a rolling breakbeat, and the revivalist hardcore hedonism of the ludicrously bass-heavy 'Nah Nah Nah'. They doff a cap to their bassline roots on crunchy breakbeat roller 'Phat Booty', before drawing a fine EP toa close with the two-step-goes-Niche heaviness of 'Smoke'.

Review: Stones Taro's latest offering is a masterclass in the art of tension and release, where breakbeat rhythms meet house grooves in a seamless, almost hypnotic blend. 'Clutch' anchors the release with a frenetic bassline and chopped vocal snippets that feel precision-engineered for the dancefloor. Then there's 'Stealthy Meow,' a surprising turn into trance-inflected euphoria, its shimmering melodies wrapped around a sturdy rhythmic core. Christopher Ledger's remix of 'Clutch' takes a darker path, stripping back the original's energy in favour of a creeping, minimalist tech-house groove. It's music that feels alive, constantly shifting under the weight of its own restless momentum. Here, Stones Taro has refined his genre-blending formulai as well as perfected it.

Review: NC4K blow the wannabes out of the park with this debut white label A/B-er from Stones Taro, the Japan-via-UK producer whose successful niche straddling garage and breakbeat has earned him many a release over the last few years or so. With the artist willing to take a chance on a new label (usually it's the other way around), he delivers two stonkers; the A-sider is a remix of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart', while the latter is the real star of the show: a deeper, breakbeat-style version of a lesser-known r&b track, Zhane's 'Sending My Love'.

Bio Lab (Local Group remix) (5:34)
Review: Dutchman Tifra is given the reins for the second release on the Dutch label Proxy and does great job of taking inspiration from 90s rave sounds and weaving them carefully into his own futuristic grooves with a tech house and minimal aesthetic. Bold bass and sleek rhythms define these cuts from the slick and spaced out sounds of 'Peninsula' to the warped and pulsing sounds of 'The Algorythm' and broken beat lushness of 'Bio Lab.' Also on the B side, Local Group bring a distinctive mix of UK breaks, d&b and rave into their arresting remix of 'Bio Lab'.

I Can't Let It Go (5:23)
Sound Of The Hardcore (4:59)
War Of Da Worldz (5:10)
Review: Back in the early days of the UKG scene it was all about those famous Sunday sessions. This EP from Twostep2 captures the magic of that special time across three hefty and bass-driven new cuts that stay firmly entrenched in the underground sound. 'I Can't Let It Go' is a raw and jostling cut with metallic hits and a classic pitched-up r&b vocal. There is more cheeky skip and swing to 'Sound Of The Hardcore' with its innocent melodies and kinetic kicks, while closer 'War Of Da Worldz' brings 2step shuffle, great Big Ben samples and sustained chords that bring the soul.

Harry Wills - "6 For 5 & Feelin' Fine" (Rob Amboule remix) (5:37)
Rob Amboule - "Mindright" (Harry Wills Toasty mix) (5:12)
Review: Up next for the mental health charity label are 4 tracks dedicated to Mind. The VA pays homage to early 2000s nostalgia - with two Garage/Breaks cuts from Harry Wills & Rob Amboule respectively. The two of them alongside Alec Falconer make up 'Phone Traxx', a highly-regarded UKG outfit. Up first is '6 for 5 and feeling fresh', a track that's already been doing the rounds on dancefloors - idyllic for that peak-time club setting. Following that on the A2 is 'Mindright', which contrasts a noteworthy alternative - something you could expect any time, any place, anywhere. On the flip, is a moody remix from Rob - with a bassline that'll wobble any wall in the country. And last but not least, 'Harry's toasty mix', which more than aptly wraps up a release which is arguably the label's best yet. One not to miss.

Bonus Wobble (6:21)
Review: Wobble Boys hail from Buenos Aires but you'd be forgiven for thinking they were rolling out their rudest of tunes from somewhere in the UK. Holding true to the sound they set out on the Time To Wobble EP last year, they're at it again with Wobble Is Back and the basslines just keep getting fatter. Nasty garage beats, mammoth low end, simple leads - there's nothing else you need to make serious dancefloor heat. The pick of the bunch might well be 'Track 2' here, which has a delicious noirish tint to the DX7 organ sounds to get the dance proper moody. Imagine the scenes when these belters drop on the Wobble lads local crew.

Changing Faces

Reggae Fusion (Deep mix) (6:41)
On My Way (6:25)
Changing Faces (6:16)
Reggae Fusion (Tuff Mudda mix) (6:06)
Review: Constant Sound is one of the very many labels that is headed up by Burnski and one that he reserves for club-ready tech house and minimal. Wodda steps up for the latest outing and brings some future garage energy to the opener, 'Reggae Fusion' (Deep mix) which is lit up with lithe synths and smart vocal samples. 'On My Way' has more infectious garage vibes to it with the squelchy drums and hits and some nice heady melodies up top. 'Changing Faces' gets more twisted and brings intergalactic drama to the ass-wiggling cyborg tech beats and last of all, a Tuff Mudda mix of 'Reggae Fusion' shuts down with a silky thump and throwback UKG bass.

Review: Our love for Coco Bryce is well-documented on these pages. To get news of a new album from the legendary Dutch drum & bass producer, then, is, well, music to our ears. Computer Love is a double pack on his own label MYOR that explores downtempo sonic landscapes, deep drum & bass and occasional forays into UKG and breakbeat. It's a kaleidoscopic listen with meticulous craft in each tune and overflowing with fresh melodic ideas as well as his famous smart samples. Previously released singles 'Night Safari' and 'Trust Issues' are standouts amongst a slew of other more left-of-centre sounds.

Review: With a run of knockout singles on XL reaching back to 2016, Tom and Ed Russell finally deliver the album we always knew they had in them. Overmono is a project which happily gorges on the best bits of rave culture and spits back out something fresh, universal and yet still headsy enough to keep the underground faithful happy. Good Lies builds on that promise in every way, threading in anthemic vocal hooks and massive emotive brushstrokes without losing that legit bite which has made them so enduringly popular. 'Is U' has an eye on the charts for sure, with plenty of big festival moments bagged along the way for their live shows and everyone else DJ sets. 'Walk Thru Water' hits a more melancholic note with St. Panther on vocals, but it's still masterfully crafted to bring out joyous escapism with gnarly synth flex on top. Something for everyone, then.
