Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: As Jeff Mills returns to his third deepest obsession after 909s and UFOs, he presents an addendum to his renewed Metropolis Metropolis soundtrack which doubles down on three of the themes and gives them a different framework through the lens of a 12". This is still the more cinematic end of the Millsian spectrum, but there's some intensity which may well be of use to the more dramatic or daring techno DJ. 'The Dance Rebellion Starts' is plenty loopy and disorienting, full of interwoven, clangorous patterns which should stay nicely in time if you get them locked in the mix. 'The Other Maria' might well be the star of the show though, a nightmarish, ever-building drone piece with some half-time percussion stalking around the edges for guidance. 'Freder's Reality Switch' completes the picture with a slightly more stable synths n' strings piece, but there's still that innate sense of otherness Mills always threads into his work.

Review: Jeff Mills has long been inspired by Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction movie 'Metropolis' (as was Giorgio Moroder, whose work also influenced many Motor City techno producers of Mills' era) and first created his own truncated alternative soundtrack for it 23 years ago. 'Metropolis Metropolis' sees him revisit the idea, creating a brand-new, elongated soundtrack more befitting extended versions of the film (which famously was heavily edited on in its initial release). As you'd expect, the triple-vinyl album, which is made up of six side-length suites, mixes electronic and acoustic instrumentation, with ambient synth sounds and neo-classical orchestration sitting side by side. Throw in a healthy dollop of Mills' inherent Afro-futurism and some hypnotic, soft-touch grooves, and you have an inspired and far-sighted new soundtrack to an age-old classic.

Review: It is now 23 years since Jeff Mills dropped his seminal Metropolis album, which was a shortened version of his electronic soundtrack for Fritz Lang's Metropolis movie from 1927. Mills is a famous futurist but his sounds work perfectly on this project which is a symbiotic mix of compositions that makes for a nuanced representation of the plot and storyline. It's a testament to his skill that his album is utterly timeless and wholly absorbing, and likely always will be.

Review: His adoring but party-focused audience may not always realise it, but Jeff Mills - the Detroit raised, Berlin-based techno icon - never programs a kick drum or hi-hat without some serious thought being put behind it. 'Extension' is apparently the latest in a series that started with 'Growth' in 1994 and continued with 2004 with 'Expanded', under the same concept, namely an attempt to "bring forth the notion that the Future could provide more than what we are doing now." The three tracks begin with the fizzing, watery ambience of 'Rise', kick drums present but somewhat muted, before 'The Storyteller' provides a more traditional 4/4 framework for some genuinely out of this world effects. 'Entanglement' clocks in somewhere between the other two, bubbling away beatlessly, then eased along by ride cymbals until finally a pulsing kick enters the fray over what sound like bleepy Morse code signals being beamed to other planets. More atmospheric than simply downright banging, this is Jeff Mills at his most original.

Review: Originally intended to be released last year to mark the track's 25th birthday, Jeff Mills' stomping 'Mosainga' has been given an anniversary makeover by a trio of techno producers. The EP-opening 'Turn It Up 2 Space' edit re-imagines the track as a pounding, percussive and sci-fi-seeped Motor City loop jam, while the 'BKNR Boys Somewhere In Cologne Edit' stretches out the percussive groove before reaching for the cut's iconic string loops. Over on the flip, experienced techno producer Miltom Bradley takes over and delivers a two-part take. The 'AR303 Remix Part 1' is a delightfully raw, brain-melting interpretation that pushes blistering and breathless acid lines to the fore while retaining a suitably intergalactic sound, with the accompanying 'Part 2' version spinning us deeper into space via wayward '303' motifs and alien-sounding electronics.

Mind Power Mind Control explores various techniques used for mind control, the deceptive techniques devised for such purposes and its power over people. Similarly, the music on offer here is incredibly hypnotic - this is a Mills album after all - with each track's complex sonic tapestry sure to entrance you. All of The Wizard's idiosyncrasies are on offer: immaculately programmed 909 rhythms underpin majestic strings and sublime tones, all delivered with his trademark style of futurist minimalism. While less dancefloor oriented than some of this revered DJ's previous releases, it's awe-inspiring nonetheless. Essential listening.

Review: Detroit techno legend Jeff Mills has suggested that his new conceptual opus should be experienced in isolation, free of noise and visual distractions and listened to in its entirety. Like its name may suggest, The Clairvoyant has an arcane, mystical and somewhat understated quality throughout. Opening cut the 'The Seance' has that chiming and hypnotic style of trance induction familiar from most of his other work on Axis, other times venturing into knackered, off-kilter territory as heard on 'Someone Who Feels Things' and at other opportunities exploring similarly unusual time signatures, textures and moods as heard on the mesmerising trilogy 'Three Signs From The Other Side'. More upbeat, groove based experiments you've come to know from Mills (and which will similarly appeal to DJs) can be heard on the majestic 'Questions, Decisions And Consequences' or the typically syncopated rhythms of 'Ganzfeld Experiments'. In a word, magnificent.

Review: For the latest volume in his ongoing retrospective series "The Director's Cut", Jeff Mills has decided to offer us another chance to own his most iconic and celebrated track, "The Bells". All techno heads should know the 1996 original version that kicks off the EP, but if you don't, it's a stomping, heavily percussive romp rich in looped synth stabs and chiming melodies. Here it comes accompanied by the stunning version found on the "Blue Potential" DVD, in which Mills performed live with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra), and bonus cut "The Homosapien Sapiens", which appears to be a previously unreleased cut. While of interest, it's the version of "The Bells" that make the EP an essential purchase.

Review: Given his length of service and the sheer volume of music he's put out, it would be fair to say that a Jeff Mills career retrospective is well overdue. Happily, as "best of" compilations go, "Sight, Sound & Space" is up there with the best. The three discs boast no less than 42 tracks plucked from Mills archives - and those of his Axis Records imprint - with the accompanying 50-page booklet containing detailed commentary on each by the man himself. It's a superb package for both fans and newcomers alike, with the decidedly intergalactic and alien-sounding tracks perfectly summarizing the breadth and depth of his far-sighted work (think Motor City techno anthems, heavy loop jams, sci-fi fuelled electronic soundscapes, neo-classical soundtrack comp, heady ambient works and early morning minimalist club jams).

Review: For those who dig Jeff Mills but don't have the time or money to hoard records from his extensive back catalogue, the ongoing "Director's Cut" series showcasing hard-to-find gems from his discography is a godsend. Volume five begins with a trip back to 2015 and "Solar Cycles" - an alien-sounding, otherworldly mid-tempo techno loop jam - from the limited edition, USB-only "Proxima Centauri" album. Side B begins with the bleeping tribal techno hustle of "L8" from 1998's "Skin Deep EP", before Mills offers us a chance to drift through space via 2006 track "Above Waiting Worlds", which is one of his most intergalactic and cinematic dancefloor cuts to date (and that's saying something).

Like its predecessors, this fourth volume gathers together various versions of killer cuts previously produced and released by the Motor City legend over the past two decades. Highlights include deep space techno workout "Deadly Rays (Of A Hot White Sun)", the densely layered African percussion, low slung bass and echoing organ stabs of "Gateway Of Zen (Percussion Mix)", the bleep-heavy electro/techno fusion of sweaty workout "999" and the alien-sounding, minor-key hypnotism of "The Industry Of Dreams". Review: Some 20 years after "If" first hit stores, Jeff Mills has decided to get his old pal Terrence Parker to remix it. He's done a rather good job, with both versions making great use of Mills' ghostly original chord sequences and two different variations on the mesmerizing, seemingly drifting scat-style vocals that was arguably the track's most memorable feature. The A-side "Vox Soul Mix" includes new vocals in the original style by Marachka, whose haunting but soulful improvisations brilliantly rise above metronomic techno drums, spacey effects and those now famous chords. The similar sounding "Original Remix" is a little tougher and weightier, with tooled-up percussion (check the restless hi-hats) underpinning Anna F's original scat vocal and Mills' ethereal, ambient style chords.

Review: The Wizard is getting a little reflective in his old age. While still remaining one of the Motor City's premier futurists, Mills has decided to inaugurate a series built around overlooked or hard-to-find gems from his vast back catalogue. He begins volume one by offering up a stomping and mind-altering "Unreleased Version" of 1993 horror-techno cut "Suspense", before allowing us a second chance to enjoy the off-kilter rhythms, dystopian electronics and melancholic organ chords of 1995 classic "Gamma Player". Over on side B, you'll find the metallic, industrial style percussion, deep space riffs and thrusting drums of "Transformation B (Rotwang's Revenge)" and what appears to be an alternative version of "Exhibitionist 2" track "Hydra & Synergy". The latter is arguably the most "sci-fi techno" cut on the EP.

Review: Given that Star Marked is a new sub-label from legendary Detroit Techno stable Axis, it's perhaps fitting that boss man Jeff Mills presents the debut release. Mills has yet to fully explain the ethos behind this new spin-off imprint, though by the sounds of the four contained tracks we're guessing a sharp dancefloor focus is part of the blueprint. There's plenty of variety on show, too, with the slamming, hypnotizing intensity of opener "Albali" - think metronomic kick-drums, sci-fi sweeps and a restless, minor key motif - being followed by the deep, melodious and dreamy, house-tempo goodness of "Patterns In Nature". There's a similar approach on the flip, where the dystopian techno throb of "Helix Nebula" makes way for the off-kilter deep space electro of "Aquarius". It's all superb, of course, but we expect little less from the masterful Mills.

Review: Last year, Jeff Mills provided the soundtrack for a curious Japanese film by Tatsushi Omori called And Then There Was Light. The movie was based on a novel called Hikari, which focuses on a teenager who kills his girlfriend's other lover while mistaking their affair for sexual assault. The dark tone of both novel and film naturally shines through in Mills' refreshingly electronic score, which flits between moments of quietly spacey ambience, creepy intensity, Reichian minimalism (see "Danger From Abroad"), icy soundscapes, industrial strength intensity (the panicked "The Players of Consequence" and "Lost Winners") and, on the "Hikari Mix" of "The Hypnotists", full-throttle Detroit techno with Giallo overtones.

Review: The Wizard returns with yet another conceptual project steeped in sci-fi on his new LP Lost In Space. Somehow Jeff Mills' constant forays into said aesthetics are always so fascinating. From his reinterpretation of the soundtrack to Fritz Lang's Metropolis at the turn of the millennium, to releases like Time Machine or Man From Tomorrow: this is where we see the techno master at his most creative. The five track release is the first material from Mills' new electronic-classical project, which is a collaboration with Orchestre National Du Capitole De Toulouse. It is not the first time the Detroit artist has worked with an orchestra: back in 2005 he collaborated with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra on the Blue Potential LP where they assisted him on covers from his esteemed Axis/Purpose Maker and Underground Resistance back catalogue. The real power of the musicians' contribution can be heard on tracks like "Planets X " which still retain Mill's power of the original, while "Gliese 436B" employs his trademark hypnotic sound.

Review: Jeff Mills, the legendary Detroit techno pioneer who has been praised and worshipped by everyone club kid over the age of 18 since the late 80s, has focussed his efforts more on the classical side of music in more recent years. His gigs at the Barbican over the last few years, for example, are the shows to which he's dedicated most of his attention to, and it somehow all makes perfect sense. Although legendary tunes like "The Bells" or "Amazon" are straight-up dance floor bombs, there has always been a feeling that Mills' tunes were composed of something more than mere kick drums and monophonic instruments. This new album, Planets, sees the artist showcase the role of science fiction and of an imagined order prominently, something he's always been fascinated with. The likes of "Mercury", "Venus", "Earth" and the rest of the cosmos make more sense here than they do in the academic books; much like the great Sun Ra, it's almost as if these artists have found a simpler, more instinctive way to transmit the power of the universe. And that's through sound. The price might seem hefty, but this will be regarded as a very important release in the future. A fantastic journey through space and time.

Review: Since many of Jeff Mills's strongest albums have been new scores to classic sci-fi films, hopes are naturally high for this audio interpretation of Georges Melies' 1902 silent movie, A Trip To The Moon. As you'd expect, it's an impressively cinematic musical journey, with the Detroit legend using synthesizers and drum machines to do the work of an orchestra. It touches on many of his usual musical tropes - think star-hazing ambient and futurist Detroit techno - while also offering nods towards Chicago acid, the kind of cyclical, phase-based compositions pioneered by Steve Reich, experimental noise, and neo-classical. It's emotive, immaculately produced, and hugely entertaining.

Jeff Mills presents the Domino Effect, the first installment of 12" EP from Jeff Mills new solo LP, Free Fall Galaxy, the ninth chapter of his "science-fiction story" Sleeper Wakes and first since 2014's Emerging Crystal Universe. It is a sublime serving of Millsian intergalactic ambience on "The Hunted", while "Solar Crossroads" sees the man employ his classic, cyclical minimalism on this bleepy and hypnotic groove full of rich strings his magical 909 touch. On the flip he takes us deeper into the void on "Rabid Star Clusters" with its snarling use of 303 acid and "Triangularism" which keeps things stripped and minimal on this wonderfully executed method of trance induction. Often imitated yet never matched, Mills still has it and this EP is brilliant from start to finish. Oh... And that cover art!

Review: This is the latest volume in Jeff Mills' epic Sleeper Wakes sci-fi series, and sees the Motor City techno legend musing on the "cosmic menace" that is the imaginary Free Fall Galaxy (or Britain post-Brexit, perhaps). It's a typically downbeat, atmospheric and evocative affair, with Mills blurring the boundaries between sytnthesizer-heavy movie soundtrack work, high-minded ambient, Radiophonic Workshop style electronic experimentation, deep and otherworldly techno, intense acid and, of course, throbbing 4/4 dancefloor pressure. As usual with Mills work in this series, the emphasis is on instrumental story telling, with the ebb and flow of the album's construction evoking mental images of confusion and paranoia amongst the endless darkness.

Review: The third and final instalment of Jeff Mills Exhibitionist 2 series is a series of segments (much like his revered Live At The Liquid Room - Tokyo mix CD, released in 1996) from a live DJ performance in Leiden, Netherlands on 21st February 2015. What Mills set would be complete without "The Bells" (which appears on Part1), "Gamma Player" or one of his epic 909 drum machine solos (as heard on Part 4, to much fanfare). Review: Eleven years ago Jeff Mills' Exhibitionist DVD undertook a rather ambitious project. An audio visual presentation where from varying camera angles, viewers got to witness the sheer dexterity of Mills' DJing style across three decks and a 909, warts and all. The second volume promises more of the same across two DVDs and a CD. So expect some epic mixes and the opportunity to witness The Wizard in true form in collaboration with a live drummer and even an interpretive dancer! But best of all; hear some brand new tracks, all exclusive to the mix. They're captured right here on this 12", the second volume. Hearing him do 303 acid over his typical 909 jam sounds as brilliant as you'd expect on "Studio Take 1" and "Studio Extra". On "Studio Take 3 & 4" he goes for the classic Axis sound complete with Millsian bleeps and dreamy pads and all with the trademark metallic hiss and crack of the 909, lurking in the background. Review: Later in the year, Jeff Mills will release the long-awaited follow-up to his legendary Exhibition mix CD. Details are relatively scarce at present, though according to its creator the CD/DVD package "explains a lot about the mindset, and the concepts, and the procedure of how a DJ does what he does". In a bid to raise interest in the project - not that the Detroit legend needs much help in that regard - he's put together this 12" of previously unheard studio material. It's typical of Mills' floor-friendly exploits, with all four tracks fusing intergalactic, outer-space electronics (see opener "Signals To Atomix One") with rolling Motor City grooves (complete with the usual relentless cymbals) and bubbling basslines.

Review: Loaded in conceptual background and forming a follow-on to last years The Jungle Planet, Jeff Mills continues his Sleeper Wakes series with this highly developed album of forward thinking electronics both ambient and energized. "Stellar Black Connector" certainly hits upon his style of techno, albeit in a more cinematic and patient way, but much of the album is more concerned with atmospheric vistas that play out like richly realised incidentals that do a fine job of projecting the accompanying imagery into your cerebral cortex. With its masterful production and unapologetic forward focus, albums don't come much more techno than this.

Chronicles Of Possible Worlds (DVD)
Review: The theme of "Chronicles Of Impossible Worlds" is exoplanets, new planets discovered starting in 1995 which revolve around a star outside our solar system. Mixing music, dance and visuals, this creative work testifies to the advances of science and hints at the existence of possible other worlds. Following a period of investigation and a meeting with researchers from the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, Mills chose to focus on six planets (Wasp 12b, 13b, 14b, 15b, 16b and 17b). Their specific physical and structural properties were then translated through music, sound, images and dance.
Together with Mills, the choreographer Alexandre Riccoli created a roaming choreography spread out across the Vasarely Foundation that explores the correspondence between the physical properties of these planets and choreography's own "body states". The show's soundtrack, composed by Mills, is broadcast by the dancers' costumes (designed by Berlin designer Anke Bruns) that are equipped with speakers. The music, the different sonic trajectories, the dancers and the public ambling freely through the halls can spacialize, orbit, or even fuse in the naves of the Foundation.

Review: When he's not scoring short films, collaborating with astronauts or DJing at ground level, Jeff Mills can be found working on his Something In The Sky series, now up to its 11th release. Jeff Mills' elevated fascination with space is truly evident in these four spooky and trippy blipped tracks. "Track 1" holds an unsettling tension throughout its plateaus and loopy arrangement, with random flutters of data processing sounds adding an eerie atmosphere to its spectral design. Uncanny sonancy and confusing tones make up "Track 2", which sounds like a malfunctioning supercomputer lost in space, while the delayed tom drums in "Track 3" give of an effect of falling through a black hole to no end. "Track 4" is by far the most hectic of all four productions, like a murder scene from a Kubrick film, Mills somehow harmonises his synths to the sounds of a frenzied electronic brain setting itself to self destruct.

Review: What would we do without these warehouse finds? Luckily, our dedicated team at Juno HQ are always on the lookout for such rarities. This time it's the second instalment of the Something In The Sky series by none other than techno guru, Jeff Mills. All untitled of course, and "Track 1" sets the scene with a galloping thump of a drum loop, surrounded by a myriad of eerie sonics and chilling melodies; "Track 2" adds the classic Mills-esque grit to the percussion and finds itself lost amid glitchy, minimalist howls and distant noise injections. Over on the flipside, "Track 3" indulges in a faster tempo and reduces the melody to shreds, whilst "Track 4" uses more shuffling tactics and comparatively less frightening timbres to its core. A must have!

Review: Since launching Something In The Sky as an offshoot of his Axis label in 2009, Jeff Mills has used it sparingly. Yet its releases are among his best. Giving him license to fully explore his obsession with space and techno's intergalactic boundaries, his contributions to the label's discography usually sound like they've been beamed in from a satellite broadcasting classic 1980s Detroit techno experiments. That's certainly the case here. The four untitled tracks bubble and pulse menacingly, offering spacious synths, hypnotic rhythms and more alien electronic noises than your average episode of Star Trek. Being Mills, each of these blasts-from-the-past come loaded with bittersweet machine soul, making them brilliant DJ tools.
