Review: Lawrence Englsh's new album was born out of a commission by curator Jonathan Wilson to create a sound environment for the Naala Badu building at the Art Gallery of NSW. It is a deeply atmospheric album that explores the relationship between sound and architecture and reflects the building's design, with its name meaning "seeing water" in the Gadigal language. The piece was crafted with a collaborative spirit by incorporating contributions from a diverse group of artists including Amby Downs, Claire Rousay and Jim O'Rourke. The resulting composition blends ambient textures and long-form sound prompts that capture the essence of place as an evolving, subjective experience. It's a work that highlights the porous nature of sound, and as a standalone work also succeeds in sinking you in deep.

Review: Lawrence English's Brisbane, Australia based Room 40 returns with an album by Japanese ambient masetro Chihei Hatakeyama. Recorded over a period of five years and during a field trip to Turkey, Hatakeyama became acutely aware of how architecture shapes sound and through doing so: affects the very nature of music's resonance. The earliest examples of sound design stem from the interaction of human voice and various architectural spaces used for worship and ritual. It is these sonic reflections on ritual that are at the root of the album's theme. He developed a series of new processes and transformations that expanded his approach to textural music. Weaving in location recordings from these spaces, the record began to take on a hazy abstract quality; the unfamiliar familiar.

Review: There is only one king when it comes to ambient and drone sculptures, and his name is Tim Hecker. The American producer is, and always has been, an outside thinker, through and through, breathing life and surrealism into his minimal sonic landscapes. By now, Hecker has released numerous albums and LP's on many different imprints, but in the last few years he's chosen to be sparing with what he puts out. This latest slab of wax from the man is actually a reissue, two tunes that have already been released on Australia's Room40, that is "Norberg" and "Apondalifa", respectively. The former is a deep and melancholic gust of crystalline ambient walls, while the latter filters in sparse and loose guitar strings into the airy sonics circling the air. Both are true masterpieces of the genre, and they're the perfect soundtracks to just chill out to. Recommended.

Review: When he originally released "The North Bend" in 2010, Rafael Anton Irisarri was not the celebrated ambient artist, sound designer and mastering engineer he is today. In hindsight, it was probably his breakthrough album: a release that rightly received rave reviews and introduced him to a wider audience. Listening to this anniversary reissue, which reprises the original track list, it's easy to see why it landed so well. Musically, it blends melancholic and poignant, neo-classical style musical movements with dense layers of white noise and drone style sound design, resulting in a sequence of slowly unfurling tracks that sound brilliant first time around, but also reveal more intricate details once you've listened a few times.

Review: Intended as a series of companion pieces to accompany the artist's tenth album 'Solastalgia', 'Agitas Al Sol' is Rafael Anton Irisarri's latest statement of wonder in drone, released three years later. Whereas the 2019 album was like gazing in awe at a slow-motion avalanche hurtling towards us, this follow-up is like surveying the aftermath of said avalanche in real time, allowing for a more tactile submergence in texture, with less drone resounding. Yet another brooding, crackly, tape-loopy mantra on eco-anxiety from the American producer and engineer.

Review: Having already released a string of albums on Australia's Room40, Rafael Anton Irisarri returns to the label with some fresh, provocative work - another dose of high-powered drone for the more daring bedroom DJ. "Displacement" is a tranquil, eerie shred of melancholia that reminds us of placid waters, while "Reprisal" unlocks the gates and let's river cascade on top of us with a chill. "Hiatus" is more anthem and jarring, "Persistence" unleashes a glowing beam of sunlight, and "Secretly Wishing For Rain" is the silence just after the storm. Meditative and beautiful.

Review: Harmonious Angles was Ross Manning's debut release, and we can still remember the day back in 2012 when its free-riding blends of noise hit our digital charts; it was a breath of fresh air at a time when making gnarly noise music was still seen as a little too much for certain listeners. He's back on Australia's Room40 with another bunch of twisted pieces of brain dynamite, but his sharp brand of noise is a little more contained, a little more mature, and beautifully processed. Moreover, it's just on the right side of totally insane, something we look out for all the time. For fans of everyone from Dilloway to the Touch label.

Review: Although best known for his mutant dancehall and twisted dub work as The Bug, Kevin Martin has impeccable experimental credentials. Here he offers further supporting evidence via a first album under his given name for admirable Aussie imprint Room 40. Comprised of two lengthy suites of interconnected tracks, "Sirens" was inspired by the birth of Martin's first-born child. It's a wonderfully atmospheric affair, with gentle and joyous ambient cuts being joined by paranoia-laden experimental electronica, dark and gripping drone soundscapes, and the kind of frazzled but quietly uplifting fare that wrests poignant and melancholic moments from fragments of noise and hushed, effects-laden field recordings.
