Review: Long-time European techno innovator Joachim Spieth has hooked up with Agustin Mena aka Warmth for a debut collaborative album that blends their shared love for expansive soundscapes and atmospheric compositions. Warmth is the Spanish ambient producer who is also behind the SVLBRD alias so these two know a thing or two about how to get the most out of their machines and so they prove here across an album of seven immersive tracks. They are rife with organic textures and evoke a sense of space and timeless longing, all with a gently persuasive sense of movement.

Review: Yessonata sees Rick Wakeman delving into his Yes past, crafting a stunning solo piano suite that intertwines over 30 musical fragments from his time with the legendary prog-rock band. Adapted from a full band and choir arrangement performed at the London Palladium, this CD offers a masterclass in Wakeman's intricate piano playing. Familiar Yes themes, such as those from Awaken, Close to the Edge and Roundabout, flow seamlessly with lesser-known pieces like The Meeting. Wakeman's ability to weave these complex themes into a cohesive piece shines throughout. He effortlessly transitions from iconic intros like Long Distance Runaround to deeper cuts, making the listener's experience both nostalgic and exploratory. Particularly striking are the repeated appearances of Awaken and Close to the Edge, which serve as the backbone of the suite. The second half of Yessonata features the King Arthur Piano Suite, drawing on Wakeman's 1975 album The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Review: On the cover of his first album for a decade, saxophonist Kamasi Washington stares intently out, the universe stretching out to infinity behind him. You see, Washington is something of a Sun Ra acolyte, and there's something of the great man's spiritual, psychedelic and far-sighted feel about The Epic. Rooted in a loose, soulful and occasionally riotous blend of spiritual jazz, it more than lives up to its' name, stretching across three themed CDs. While Washington's tenor sax offers a focal point throughout, it's merely part of a greater ensemble effort - Sun Ra Arkestra style - that helps The Epic fly by in a flurry of loose-limbed drums, rubbery double bass, hammered-out pianos and intoxicating vocals.

Review: Scarred by a high-profile breakdown, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weekend has spent much of the last three years rebuilding his mental health - a process reflected in the introspective and surprisingly open lyrics at the heart of Hurry Up Tomorrow, his sixth studio album. Review: By day Richie Weeks worked at the post office, but by night he was a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He has a huge impact on the New York disco, boogie funk and house scenes from the 1970s and well into the 1990s. He released on plenty of different labels and now this collection shines a light on a bunch of his previously unreleased tunes. They are all served up in a DJ-friendly format and focus on his work in 1978 and 79 and they soon take you back to the sound of New York nightlife at that time even if you didn't live it the first time around. Like Volume 1, these are well-crafted songs with slinky basslines and infectious grooves.

Review: Paul Weller is perhaps one of the best non-soul musicians to ask to compile a rare soul compilation. Rather than documenting soul music as it proliferated in the 1960s, Ace Records' soul aim was to capture a genre, fashion and style as one man saw it in retrospect, in light of his involvement in the mod revival of the mid 1970s. Weller would later go onto form and front The Jam, but in late 1974, shortly before his involvement in the punk movement, he was about none of that business at all. Punk partly grew on febrile tissues of mod, which was in turn an offshoot of 60s soul; and it is true that we may hear a foetal form of the sound in the brasher cuts on this record, be it Billy Stewart's 'Summertime' or James Carr's 'Pouring Water'. Also clock Brother To Brother's 'In The Bottle', a super-early drum machine blues gem perfect for the house heads.

Unlike his recent, more experimental releases, Vultures is polished and sonically unified, with beats that highlight Kanye's inventive sound design and Ty Dolla's smooth vocals. Tracks like 'Good (Don't Die)' nod to 808s & Heartbreak, delivering a nostalgic yet modern take on Kanye's signature introspection, while 'Carnival' pulses with rich textures, blending elements of Brazilian funk and industrial beats to create a hypnotic groove. Kanye's verses are more technically precise than ever, and though his lyrics are less personal, they maintain a certain energy that keeps the momentum alive. Ty Dolla's silky, gravelly tones are the perfect counterpoint, adding warmth and balance. From the bouncy 'Stars' to the club-ready 'Burn', the album is built on rhythms that are as intricate as they are accessible. Though more restrained in theme, Vultures achieves a polished, infectious sound with irresistible beats and thoughtful production, proving Kanye can still push boundaries while embracing a more mainstream appeal.
