Review: Zodiak Commune reaches right back into the early days of the Dutch acid techno and electro scene, and it remains an essential outlet for tough and gnarly rave gear for darkened souls. This new record is a split between Umwelt and Serge Geyzel, continuing a series of split discs pitting serious underground operators against each other. Umwelt's side kicks off with the blistering acid electro of 'The Wake Of The Anthropocene' and follows up with heavy but melodic pearler 'Cosmic Dancer'. Geyzel's 'Off The Ground' is a nervy slice of acid with sad-hearted undertones, and 'Hostage' completes the set with a moody, percussive throwdown.

Review: Serious history business: 'Some Justice' was the first time Micky Finn and Aphrodite joined forces and launched a partnership that would change drum & bass history. Prior to them linking, Urban Shakedown comprised of Aphrodite and Claudio Giussani who had a run of fantastically euphoric hardcore crossover records during that golden rave era. 'Some Justice' landed in 91 and the instantly goosebumping vocal cut 'Burnin' Passion' landed in 93. Both of them enjoyed these touch-ups in 94, which still sound fantastic today. Feel the burn.

Review: Whatever you think of the Unlimited Love series - and a few record collectors have grumbled online about it - you can't argue with the quality of the rare cuts they offer up. Volume 26 in the series is, of course, another must-have. First up is New Love Ltd & Interstate 95's positive and punchy disco-soul number "So Much To Talk About", quickly followed by another superbly soulful late 1970s dancefloor number, "That Friday Pay (Part One)" by Sonny Jenkins And The New York Potpourri Strings. The rare hits keep coming on the flip, where Sugar & Spice's boogie-era disco-funk number "The Beast (Instrumental)" comes accompanied by the low-slung brilliance of World Quake Band's "On The One", a 1980 B-side from a record that regularly changes hands for L140 a pop.

Review: The Unknown-Untitled gang is back with an eighth mysterious outing from the self-titled production outfit behind the label, whoever that may be. Again this is a limited edition 12" and again it is pure fire. 'rack 1' sounds like techno from a distinctly UK perspective, if you ask us - the bass drills deep, the synths fizz like static and chopped up vocal fragments bring the hype. The rest of the EP is a varied one that takes in clanging loop pieces, industrial tinged workouts like 'Track 3' and futuristic rhythmic explorations such as the tense, textured sounds of 'Track 5'.

Review: A new year always brings with it a wealth of new labels and 2024 is proving no different. The latest to fall in our laps is Unknown Musik from Spain, and the production credits on this inaugural EP also go to Unknown Musik, although the two edits are actually by Sadkiel. They first tackle 'Latin Flute' which has some nice fresh tech beats run through with Balearic guitars and soul samples that really bring it to life. On the flip is the more minimal styling of 'September' with its pulling low ends and raw percussion as well as some edgy stabs to keep things from being all too sweet.

Unknown Collective kick off with 'Claw' which is a bubbly garage-tinged tech sound with nice bulbous melodies up top. Review: Unknown Assailant is a limited run vinyl only label shrouded in mystery. Each of the four tracks on the first release touches on a different style of techno ranging from cinematic acid of "Forgiveness But No Surender" to the peak time energy and in your face style of "Silent Scream". Incorporating the dark and stripped back minimal style of "Whippet" along with the clunky dance floor groove of "The Sickness" it is a well-rounded eclectic package that fuses analogue textures with ambient moods and bursts of energy. Each of the tracks have been made in collaboration with an artist who wishes to keep their identity a secret, so the music does the talking for itself. Unknown Assailant pins the release together featuring on each of the collaborations, and the four Silent Assassins range from artists known for their top selling releases on well-known labels to others lesser known in the realms of techno. This release is limited to a vinyl pressing of only 200 copies with more in the series of secretive releases to follow in the coming months.

Review: It has been three full years since we last heard from Unknown Assailant. Their debut EP came in September 2020 and offered four different techno cuts aimed at the club. The mysterious producer is now back on their own outlet with another four stylish offerings. 'Ancient Beauty' is all jacked up drums and mysterious chords. 'Isolated Mechanics' then keeps up the pressure with more raw percussive patterns and analogue drum sounds and 'Rude Awakening' layers in vast icy hi hats to dramatic and hypnotic effect. Last of all is 'How Has It Come To This', a dark and dubby, moody and minimal techno piece for 5am.

Review: First released back in 2007, UR's 'Hi Tech Dreams' is widely regarded as one of 'Mad' Mike Banks' most perfectly formed EPs - in part because its blend of optimistic techno futurism with dancefloor darkness offers a neat summary of the 'dreaming of utopia, living in a dystopia' message at the heart of Underground Resistance's militant ethos. But analysis aside, it's simply a terrific record - as this timely reissue proves. A-side 'Hi Tech Dreams' lives up to its promise, with far-sighted melodies, tactile riffs and soulful vocal samples rising above a loose-limbed Motor City techno beat. In contrast, 'Lo Tech Reality' is a moodier and more melancholic chunk of breakbeat-driven techno, while 'Hold My Own' is a murky, hip-hop influenced downtempo head-nodder.

Review: This reissue of Underground Resistance's seminal Nation 2 Nation LP is a significant moment; the group's messages of liberation and resistance feel as relevant as ever, not least given the reivisionist concept behind this EP. Perhaps, though, we should resist chinstroking too much; for the original liner notes of this seminal release criticize the over-intellectualization of characteristically African American art forms such as house, hip-hop, jungle and jazz. Even so, this 1991 classic stands as tall as ever, with sax contributions from Lenny Price helping to explore exactly what jazz would sound like if it had originated with the analogue gear that was available to UR's members, decades later.

Review: The highly politicised Los Angeles collective Ultra Red re-released their superb A16/A17 12" last year. Both tunes were produced entirely from field recordings made during street protests against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington April 16 and 17, 2000 and became secret weapons of DJs like Ricardo Villalobos & Craig Richards. Now, 'A16' gets remixed by underground titans Losoul and The Mole into two club-ready groovers. Losoul goes first with a dry and minimal take that is textured and deep with plenty of absorbing atmosphere. Next up, The Mole goes for a more propulsive sound with glistening tech house drums and icy pads. Both are artful reworks that take you on a mental trip.

Review: New label U - Bend debuted back in September with a tidy Balearic 12" and promised that it would "bridge the gap between acid cougars and the namaste death cult." It is the eponymous production team that takes charge of this 12" again and again the vibe is Balearic. 'Rip It Off' starts off with some syrupy and sugary rhythms that are laid back and funky in their own way. Steamy vocals and acidic liens drive to take things higher and on the flip 'How's Your Father' brings some more laid back cool, this time with acoustic guitar strums and cosmic pads.

Review: Trust is a long running Viennese electro label run by DJ Glow. Its latest release is a fierce four tracker featuring various artists, all undisputed luminaries of the electronic music scene. On the first side of Trust XY2 you have a true force to be reckoned with in the form of Microthol X Ultradyne with the sinister Detroit computer funk of 'Hostile Invasion' (Land Of Injustice mix) followed by the inimitable Peder Mannerfeldt's industrial-edged reconstruction of Clatterbox's 'Semi-Automatic'. Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.

Review: Tabernacle turn their attention towards the industrial side of their musical repertoire with this hard-hitting release from Russian and French outfit UVB76. Review: French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse laid this cult gem down in 1983. After its release, he became an underground sensation within the niche French boogie scene, Both of the tunes which now get reissued manage to successfully mix political statements with dance-floor fire. First up is 'Naima' which is about the resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. On the flip is 'Tiers Monde' which is a much more heavy digital reggae tune that offers a reminder that we must not forget about abandoned children of the Third World. Review: The most sought-after release from the entire Sounds catalogue, Gemini and Unit T's 1995 release, 'Sideburns', finally gets a much-needed reissue. A1 track, 'Trip', is a prime example of deep house if there ever was one. An infectious, encircling melody meets the deep groove of the bassline to create a finished product that is in equal measure sun-soaked and cosmic. Review: It has been a while since Umbo released any new music but now he is back on the Austrian label Resense with a superb pair of edits on this essential little 45 rpm. Kicking things off is 'Grits' which is a hard hitting bit of b-boy funk and breaks with old school soul vocals and plenty of horn stabs powering it ever onwards and upwards. '23h' is a little more seductive but no less busy with tightly woven bongos and congas peppering the high speed funk groove. Review: Not to be confused with Trevor Jackson's covert edit alias of the same name from the mid '90s, Chicago scalpel wielder Leonard Part Sixx brings his Underdog project to New York's finest Razor N Tape for a hefty double pack. Review: A new imprint arises from mainland Europe in the shape of the mysterious Rawax with the debut twelve presenting a quartet of Untitled Tracks from Siberian producer Unbroken Dubs. Given the mood present throughout and the location of the producer, obvious parallels can be drawn with the excellent output from Ethereal Sounds, and that should be recommendation enough for people to investigate. Should you require further enticement, this release opens with wormhole traversing rhythms cutting through the sonic ether, though distant chord embellishments add a touch of warmth to the slightly alien tones that circulate constantly. The subsequent two tracks continue in this manner as Unbroken Dubs seeks to flush the stripped down patterns of drums and fuzzed out bass in ever increasing expanses of sonic dust. It's the final track where a more apparent sense of urgency is introduced as the Siberian lays down a tropical shower of percussion over intrusive chords.

Review: Unbroken Dub has always struck us as an artist who deserves far more credit for what they do. The artist's past mixtures of dub techno and hard techno, for example, have amounted to wild concoctions few others thought to indulge at the time - the tracks 'I Want To Make This Louder' springs to mind. But this new one for Rawax, 'Highway Sleepers', also serves to preserve said keenness. Beginning on an ambient-acid note with the not-a-gabber-track 'Gabba', the EP moves slowly into stickier and gooier dance oceans, ending up completely immersing its beats in spitty acid ectoplasm on 'Murky' before rinsing itself off and drip-drying in the ambient gusts of 'Spectral Wind'.

Review: There is no messing when it comes to the techno served up by Umwelt's essential Rave Or Die. Over the course of 14 previous EPs the label has dropped rib-rattling, brain boggling bangers aimed squarely at the floor. This time out the boss himself steps up with Ancient Methods with each providing one solo track. This one comes on limited 10" picture disc so is an extra special one to add to the collection Ancient Methods's 'Accept Light' is a harshly textured industrial banger and Umwelt's 'Shades of Security' is just as caustic and hard edged.

It's a truly global affair with artists from all over the world and The Exaltics kick off with 'All Of This', a typically rugged slide of electro. From there the quality never dips with Freddie Fresh jacking your body, the legendary Neil Landstrumm bringing his textbook machine madness and Umwelt closing down with 'Celestial Mechanics'. Review: As heard smashed on Vision Radio by Noisia on several occasions, original US junglist UFO! gets real on the beautifully named Psycho Bummer label. Four cuts of chaotic choppy-choppage and Amen splinters, this represents everything that's exciting about modern jungle right now. 'Level Up' and 'Big Up All' are all about the bashy bumps and shunts, 'Operation Drag N Drop' is a lot more nostalgic with its jazzier drums and emotional pads while 'Feed The Cat' tickles the whiskers with big drums and a mystical charm. Impeccable work, our advice is to identify this flying object as soon as you can!

Review: Philly's Universal Cave has spent the best part of the last decade putting out some seriously hot edits and mixes. For the first time, they now link up with Pleasure of Love for a joint release of dazzling reworks. All four of these are absolute heaters from a variety of different backgrounds. First up is a dusty and lo-fi port house jam with big synth energy, while 'My Kind Of Girl' slows it down to a tropical reggae style house beat and 'The Jungle' brings some steamy and sun-kissed, trumpet lead carnival vibes and finally 'Angst' is awash with big Italo chords and shimmering drums. Review: Pioneering psychedelic trance label Platipus is going all-out to celebrate its 30th birthday, with no less than 12 compilation style EPs scheduled for release this year. This is the second and, like its predecessor, sounds pleasingly current thanks to the trend towards harder and more psychedelic music. Len Faki kicks things off via a pleasingly weighty, hypnotic, chant-sporting rework of Union Jack's 'Cactus', before Chab channels the spirit and sound of dawn at a turn-of-the-millennium free party ('Sunrise'). Over on the reverse, Simon Berry and Luke Brancaccio deliver a deep, progressive house-influenced tech-trance interpretation of Martin Merkel's 'Little Wonder', while Star impresses with the driving, peak-time hedonism of 'Rock Rose'.

Review: Welcome back to Planet Rhythm, the most groovy of all the astral bodies and one that deals only in seriously high-spec techno. Unknown Code is the one cooking up the goodness here and does so with a real focus on weighty low ends. 'Jede Dunkle Nacht' has just that as well as starry synths flashing across the face of the tune. 'Paranoid' is a darker cut with more grainy texture and scraping hits then 'Vision' thumps out a linear groove embellished with panel beaten loops and 'U-bahn' gets edgy with more strobe-lit synths. These are tools, but tools of the highest quality.

Review: Ultradyne has been called a 'fundamentalist' techno artist, and while this is a term we've hardly come across to describe much techno before, we think we get the gist with this new release, Nativist. The five-tracks on this banger-filled 12" tend towards the novelty moods of early electro, with 'Native Serenade' emitting all manner of window-wiping, slippery acid sounds, and the bleepific 'What We Must Do For Chaos' creeping into superfast hardcore. Themes of nationhood and 'protecting the realm' are present, speaking to techno's ironic appropriation of militaristic defence themes.

Review: Ame's Innervisions label has joined forces with Philomena here for a 15th release in its series. This one kicks off with an Ivory remix of Fever Ray's 'Shiver.' The leftfield electronic artist who is also part of The Knife has a distinctive voice, to say the least, and that shines out here as shimmering chords radiant around it and over a proggy groove. The flip side offers up and unknown artist with 'Track 2' which has a familiarr vocal left to hang in the air above a cold, snappy tech rhythm. It's the sort of quietly anthemic cut Ame are known for dropping at special moments.

Review: We have long had a soft spot for the sounds that come out of DC label People's Potential Unlimited, which is affectionately known as PPU. It's always lo-fi but hi-class whether in original or reissue form. It's the latter here with leftfield Estonian artist Uku Kuut's 'Funky' 7" reappearing on wax. The opener is all singing synth lines and jumbled analogue drum funk with an oddball vocal and generally stuffy arrangement making it all the more lovable. On the flip is 'What's Happening Today', another unusual mix of sounds - synth, disco, funk and goofy vocals that will have the floor in a spin.
