Windows Of My Mind (5:09)
Windows Of My Mind (remix) (4:56)
Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Review: Following on from their widely acclaimed album Afraid To Leave, Berlin's beautiful maudlin post-punk outfit Bleib Modern presents a compilation of remixes and reworks by esteemed artists from across darkwave, post-punk, and EBM. From IV Horsemen's club-worthy rendition of 'Bitter Smile' to M!R!M's dreamy synthpop take on 'Into The Night' via Dune Messiah's crooning 'Loony Voices, 2 Afraid 2 Leave: Remixed Reimaged Reloaded Part 2 offers truly diverse interpretations. With contributions from luminaries like The KVB and Blind Delon, it provides a fresh perspective on Bleib Modern's sound and serves as an exciting interlude that showcases the band's versatility and paves the way for future creations

Review: Aussie larrikin DJ WHPRSNPR is back on his very own Nerang Recordings with a motley crew of upstarts on this one. Fittingly titled Freaky Friends 2, it features DJ Swagger with some off-kilter UK bass on 'Hotice Water' and Low Tape with the NSFW booty bass of 'So Delicious' on the A side, followed over on the flip by Ole Mic Odd's sci-fi electro funk jam 'In The House' and Berlin's Nasty King Krule doing his best Dopplereffekt impression on 'Stop Talkin Boy' among others.

Review: New York's Felte label is famed around our parts for knowing how to put together a collaborative EP, but this latest joining of forces from the Flaamingos and The KVB is simply right on the money! The former are a household band who have appeared repeatedly on the label, an outfit who share a post-punk sensibility, while the latter are a Berlin-based duo who indulge in dark and brooding club music that's strangely free of any genre tags. The A-side features three tracks from the band, where the wonderful "Naomi" steals the limelight thanks to its melancholic mood and driving percussive beats, while the flip contains three slabs of moodier, vocal-filtered electronica; our pick has to be "Still Warm" for its early eighties Mancunian edge. Deep and mesmerising!

Review: Berlin-based Ombra International love all things post-punk and Italo disco, and they continue to represent that fusion in style on their 21st release. First up HLM brings a heavy wash of synths to 'En Ecailles' before Tony Y Not get into a twanging new wave vibe on 'How About Lily'. Kimshies has a sleazier sound to offer up, while Rees pushes all manner of vintage arpeggios at the behest of 'Lucifer's Tango'. That leaves it to Endrik Schroeder to finish the set with the atmospheric 'Rainy Days', a perfect tribute to washed out 80s post-punk with a strong dose of disco pumping in its veins.

The Klinik - "Moving Hands" (Helena Hauff remix) (3:46)
Kubler Ross - "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" (John Bender cover version) (4:17)
Review: Well, you can't really beat The Vinyl Factory in terms of its diversity of output, especially when they get some of the most interesting and current techno artists to remix EBM material from the 1980s. The So-Low compilation has been one of this year's best releases by a mile, a collection of hard-to-find gems from the likes of Colin Potter, Hard Corps, and many more, but we were utterly gobsmacked when we heard who was reinterpreting this gold. First up, Diagonal's lanky Powell transforms P/1e's "49 Second Romance" into a bubbly gunshot of a tune that keeps the original's vocals intact amid the gargles and jagged percussion stabs, and this killer is followed by JD Twitch's wondrous edit of "Gerry & The Holograms" by "Gerry & The Holograms". The ace Helena Hauff reshuffles The Klinik's "Moving Hands" into a deranged, synth-heavy techno swarmer, and John Blender gives us a cover version of "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" by Kubler Ross, a visionary remix that wraps up this total belter of an EP. Totally and wholeheartedly recommended!!

Review: We love Talking Drums. At the core, they are simply our type of band. An album, a few EPs, and then disappear before the scene kicks off and becomes commercialized. Boxes all well and truly ticked. The early 80s were a period of change what with punk music evolving into post-punk, and while the nu-romantic fashion that came to prominence in the mid 80s was a national movement, it was bands like Talking Drums which initiated it. Thanks to the ever-reliable Dark Entries, we now get to enjoy their best single, Courage, in all its glory - and it sounds like it's been pressed up properly, too! All you need to know at this point, if you haven't come across this already, is that it's one of the best disco-not-disco singles you'll ever cop...and we don't have a favourite tune...they're all equally raw, drum-heavy, house-envisioning, and utterly addictive. Hotly tipped!

Review: Since the mid 1980s, there's been much discussion - in beard-stroking circles, at least - of the Balearic credentials of Scottish synth-poppers Tears For Fears. The band seems to have finally cottoned on to this, commissioning White Isle resident and International Feel boss Mark Barrott to provide fresh reworks of "Head Over Heels" in honour of Record Store Day. Happily, he's done a terrific job, particularly on the epic A-side "Sketches From A Sunrise Spiritual Meditation". Built around layered, ultra-positive synthesizer arpeggios and a saucer-eyed ambient sensibility, it brilliantly ebbs and flows throughout. The flipside "Flying Wings of Love Re-Interpretation" is almost as blissful and every bit as loved-up.

Review: Life & Death's head honcho DJ Tennis serves up some brooding, pop inflected deep house for main room madness on "Divisions" featuring the rich vocals of Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish pop-tronica trio Whomadewho; expect to be hearing a lot of this one this year! We've also the more straight ahead, dark melodic journey track executed in the way that only a Life & Death record can be on "Chirality" featuring some intense atmosphere provided by Sophie Trudeau's (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) string orchestra direction. "Divisions" gets an equally dark and mysterious remix, full of rich synth leads and bleepiness by Frankfurt master Roman Flugel and "Chirality" gets an epic makeover by experimental electronica legends Plaid, which is equally worthy of your attention.

Review: This Morn Omina provides the prolific Gooiland Elektro label with an impressive tenth 12" of the year. It's TMO's first release since the L'Unification Des Forces Opposantes album of 2011, but it's a four-track EP that sounds like it came straight from the mid-to-late-'80s. A high octane "Epoch (ccf)" opens proceedings with industrial rave-beats and Skinny Puppy-like vocals, while "(The) Ninth Key (ccf)" pounds down heavy like an early Regis production - paired with Karl O'Conner's vocals similar to what we heard on the excellent White Savage Dance 12". The B-side of "The Immutable Sphere (ccf)" would nestle neatly into a Terence Fixmer DJ set thanks to its Front 242 styled aggression, while "Obeah" features the frenetic drums and flusters of random instrumentation reminiscent of an early Liam Howlett production for The Prodigy. For EBM enthusiast this is a no brainer.

Drive (Tom Furse Extrapolation)

Drive (Axel Le Baron remix)
Review: Revisiting one of the stand-out moments from their debut LP, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Lou Hayter's synth-pop project undoubtedly sports some similarities with the former's other notable venture, Air. There is a more edgy, krautrock atmosphere in the original track but the same retro-fetishism is palpable, whilst Tom Furse's "Extrapolation" remix goes as far as to sound overtly like an Air record with its starlit washes of chord laid out in illustrious sequences. Yan Wagner is in a cheeky italo mood on his version, letting a fulsome bassline take centre stage. That leaves Axel Le Baron to get positively laconic with some tape warbled melodies and b-movie soundtracks charm all of his own.

Review: Desencanto is carving out its own sound world with its first releases and this one again taps into a loved-up deep house vibe that puts beautiful melodies and serene moods front and centre. 'Pipina' kicks off in the form of an Acqua mix that is downbeat and blissed out. 'Miss U Too' then brings some retro 80s synth work and taught basslines under celestial keys. 'Temptation' has more glassy melodies making for a rather haunting and eerie mood and finally, 'Last Kiss' is a suspenseful ambient soundscape that floats you up amongst the stars with reverential flutes encouraging nostalgic dreams.

Review: Luke Wyatt's Torn Hawk project has always been hard to pigeonhole, with the American producer frequently combining admirable experimental instincts and a love for dusty, distorted sounds with a desire to foreground melody and associated musical niceness. Both sides of his musical personality combine on this six-track EP for Fixed Rhythms. The highlight - for us at least - is the surf guitar solo-laden moody epic 'Oh Yeah (Cop Collab)', where waves of gritty, psychedelic and weirdo noises rise above dense sonic textures and rolling beats. That said, there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP, including the outstanding-fi workout 'Make Things So Complicated', the dubbed-out beat science of 'Dirty Black Satin' and the experimental breakbeat madness of 'Sulking In The Hallway Outside The Cafeteria'.

Review: Oracule Records' latest limited edition release comes from post-punk duo Traitrs, who made their debut with the cassette-only Rites & Rituals last summer. This first vinyl outing is something of a forthright affair, with the Toronto duo delivering tracks that meld elements of impassioned, early '80s gothic rock with cold wave and minimal wave influences. There's a wall-of-sound Joy Division feel to "Gallows Hill", while the spiraling guitars of "Burnt Offerings" recall classic late '80s shoegaze. Elsewhere, the duo's Gary Numan-esque vocals come to the fore on the discordant, guitar-heavy fuzz of "Heretic", and crawl from beneath a ton of dark-rock noise on opener "Lya".

Edition 909 of the edit focused sub label invites Nation main man Traxx and close ally NPNX to open up their personal armoury of dancefloor weapons for a series of recuts that will appeal to fans of primitive electronics, industrial, EBM and early wave. Having consulted the elder synth experts at Juno, we are still none the wiser as to what the source material is for this quartet of edits, though we highly recommend "Helden" and "Win 2 Play". If you like the recent Rat Life Records releases you should definitely check this 12".

Tuning Circuits For A Revolution (11:49)
The Vast Abyss (11:22)
Review: Appropriately titled EP coming your way. 'Fight 4' opens the scoring with 'Tuning Circuits For A Revolution', a track that seems to want to get alarm bells ringing through whatever space its powering through. Although deceptively lo-fi in production, the cut is an uneasy and subtly tense electro-edged synth workout that bounds along with tangible menace, socio-politically-charged vocal sample playing out in the background just to add to the feeling of dancing straight into the Ministry of Truth.

Flip it and find 'The Vast Abyss', essentially a tune in the same vein only slightly different - less upfront, more broken and stacked with snare rolls, subduing that omnipresent synth line without completely obscuring it, narrative words lost in favour or abstract and slightly haunting (if difficult to decipher) phrases, as much percussion as you could ask for packed into it all.

The smarter cookies out there will glean the content from the title, with BEB gathering together the earliest Tropic of Cancer material issued through the DO sublabel of Karl O'Connor's Downwards label. These three tracks were recorded in Tropic Of Cancer's original iteration of Lobo and Juan 'Silent Servant' Mendez, a time when the band was exploring a more explicitly bleaker, hazier sound. Dive (Wheel Of The Law)
Review: Ahead of Camella Lobo's forthcoming debut Tropic Of Cancer album for Blackest Ever Black, the London label return to one of her most prized recorded moments, The Sorrow Of Two Blooms. Originally released back in 2011, this three track 12" was Tropic Of Cancer at a stage when Juan Mendez was still involved and listening back now it's all too easy to understand why so many have fallen under it's spell. There's a spectral delight to the manner in which "A Colour" unfolds, with Lobo's voice drenched beneath the reverberant drone but clinging to foggy strings that embellish the track with a certain degree of light. The languid thump of "Temporal Vessels" lays Lobo's vocals so deep in the mix you are worried she's trapped down a well whilst "Dive (Wheel Of The Law)" is perhaps Tropic Of Cancer at their mystifying, bewitchingly hypnotic best. Spread across the B Side, it comes cloaked in viscous fuzz, Lobo's yearning yet indecipherable vocals seemingly glued to the pensive guitar lines. The result is utterly captivating.

The Atlanta based producer has had several cassette releases on his own DKA and CGI Records in addition to appearing for Glasgow's Clan Destine and London based Crimes Of The Future. The Rather Not LP for Dutch label Enfant Terrible sees Weiner throw down some convincingly '80s sounding alternative synth music, such as on tracks like "Leader's Choice" which is reminiscent of Geography era Front 242 or "I'm Not The Same" channelling Gary Numan circa The Pleasure Principle. A must have for retroverts, this great album that pushes the same territory as fellow North American analogue synth heads like Beau Wanzer, White Car or Streetwalker.

Review: While it has perhaps been slightly lost in the depths of time, and in the vastness of the ambient ocean, John Foxx's Metamatic label is a cornerstone of British leftfield and electronica. Since the late 1990s the label has released a steady and impressive selection of material that never truly fits into one genre or under one roof. This new collaborative EP is everything that UK electronic music is about, with five exploratory slices of machine noise that simply make perfect sense. Wrangler's "He's A Liquid", for instance, takes a mechanical industrial groove and spreads it over tight sci-fi sonics; Hannah Peel's "Tidal Wave" satisfies the pop fans with a slow and chimerical heart-stopper; "030" by LoneLady is a violin-led bundle of percussion and desolate vocal strips. The B-side flexes more muscle thanks to the head-banging pseudo trance of "No-One Driving" by The Soft Moon, followed by Xeno and Oaklander's nastier, more break-driven version of "He's A Liquid".

Review: Yugoslavia went through unthinkable turmoil during the break up of the Soviet Union, which is why it is all the more astounding even all these years on that it had quite such a fertile and innovative music scene. In 1984, Zoran Jevtic and Zoran Vracevic were a key part of it and helped revolutionise the sound of the day by introducing synth-pop, breakbeat and hip-hop with their Data and The Master Scratch Band projects. Their releases paved the way for modern electronic sounds and this album dives deep into that era and compiles their earliest unreleased works from between 1981 and 1983. It's a daring exploration of genres including industrial, EBM, minimal synth and electro-funk. It adds up to a true digger's gem that will significantly elevate your vinyl-hunting credentials without having to do the hard work yourself.

Review: This is nominally a soundtrack, though what for hasn't been explained by either the label or the two artists involved. Unusually, it's a split affair, with the majority of the tracks being provided by Portland producer Hyacinth, with Kent's Central Office of Information contributing a trio of cuts in the middle. While the latter are fine contributions - soft, shuffling blends of pitched-down instrumental dream pop and hazy ambience - it's Hyacinth's evocative efforts, which sashay between slow-motion electronica, horizontal deep synth-pop, warming IDM and softly spoken electronic experiments - that really hit the spot. Throughout, there's a great sense of mood and atmosphere, as befits a (possibly imaginary) soundtrack album.

Review: Who said dramatic, grown up synth pop innovation died after its 1980s heyday? Certainly not us, which is good considering we're three decades further down the line and former-Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon has just teamed up with Hannah Peel, Benge and Foxx to deliver a veritable Casio and Moog opera packing enough immediate payoff to hook everyone in, and more than enough depth to keep even the most discerning ears coming back for more. With the writing and production process starting back in 2019, in a Cornish studio owned by Benge, it's understandable that nothing on 'Howl' feels rushed, but there's also a definite sense of the immediate about the record - this is something born in our time, crafted from things that have been happening around us in the recent past and present. From the abstract and challenging - 'Tarzan & Jane Regained''s abrasive edges - to the chilling ('The Dance''s dystopian wails) and punchy floor filling ('New York Times'), it's a masterclass in pushing forward where we thought were fully explored.

Review: As one of the iconic partnerships from the electroclash era, Miss Kittin & The Hacker helped define seedy synth tackle at the turn of the century. Given the prevalence of minimal wave in this day and age, it feels like the perfect time for them to come back with a new album. Teetering between pop nous and the darkest of deviant nighttime dreams, this is everything you would want from a return of the Grenoble greats. Listening to 'Purist' and they could easily be taking on the charts, while a trip into 'La Cave' is like donning your finest leathers and sliding into the dungeon.

Review: Nobody's Business re-release Kittin's first album, 'First Album', harkening to way back when the electroclash queen (Caroline Herve) formed one part of the duo Miss Kittin & The Hacker with Michael Amato. Perhaps it's time for an electroclash comeback, as we're no less keen on this album as we were back then. We're happily reminded of the hit popcorning single '1982', while between-the-beats coldness prevails on lesser-known cuts like 'Nurse' and 'L'Homme Dans L'Ombre', showing off the pair's near-sociopathically calculated sound. Also of note: this album's original release year, 2001, is to 2022 what 1982 was to it.

Review: Born and raised in Bern, Switzerland, Michael Antener spent most of the 1980s concerned with interpreting the subconsciously and overtly apocalyptic discourse of that time through the medium of industrial-edged, dark feeling music. "I found a niche where I could express myself, along with other people who were not afraid of dark themes," he's quoted as saying in retrospect, before going on to explain that singing about love would have been more difficult than using "cries of pain taken from horror movies". This triple vinyl collector's item celebrates that fertile, if angry and dystopian period in Antener's life. Bringing together work from two of his formative projects, The Stranger of the Swamp and Bande Berne Crematoire, what's here is captivating. Electroclash with groove, distressed collages of noise, a certain sense of sonic expressionism - all brooding shadows, menacing arrangements and deeply unsettling moods.

Review: Italy's cosmic adventurer Tagliabue packs his synths, drum machines, and science fiction literature, ready for another excursion into the great black beyond by way of a record that packs as much nostalgia as it does ideas for future sounds. Following in the footsteps of pioneers like Franco Battiato, Klaus Schulze, Boards of Canada, and Plaid, it's a place where lights blink in rhythmic time, basslines warble enough to satisfy dance fans, and nothing is quite as it seems.

Below the electronica flight deck, things are even denser and more difficult to unpack. Ethereality makes itself more than known on tracks like 'Galassie Lontane', nodding to label rosters such as 4AD back in the day. A psychedelic adventure into vivid, colourful universes, slow motion trippy weirdness constantly visible through the ether.

They join French label Worst Records for their debut LP titled Ombre, in collaboration with vocalist Hiroko. The first side of the record features hypnotic rhythms as heard on the slow burning spiritualism of 'Giochi d'Ombre' or the arcane ritual rites of 'Ama' cerebrally transfixing you over 10 captivating minutes. Synthetic avant-garde minimalism awaits the listener on the other side, with the complex polyrhythmic tapestry of 'Barritono' and the brooding slo-mo throb job 'This Is The End' being just some of the highlights. Mastered at Enisslab by Neel.

Story has it that Virgin Records planned a world wide release for February 1984, but it was scrapped when it appeared that the movie was a box office flop. With no vinyl (including test pressings) having been made, the original master tapes were shelved for more than 35 years. Cosmic, psychedelic and absolutely neon-lit all throughout, this one is definitely a worthy addition to the collection of any of the revered outfit's many fans.

Review: You'll have to go a long, long way to find a more respected and influential synth band than Tangerine Dream. Inspiring countless others, not least in the world of movie and TV soundtracking with their combination of synth rock, kraut, electro, space-age classical and more, while they no longer have founder Edgar Froese at the helm - he died in 2015 and was the only figure to have been involved since the outfit's inception - as Raum proves, the remaining players are every bit capable of continuing the legacy.

The album follows on from the Probe 6-8 EP, and was composed with full access to Froese's Cubase arrangements, alongside his hoard of Otari Tape recordings made between 1977 and 2013. And the authenticity is tangible. Spiralling arpeggios, dream-like sequences born in centuries that aren't here yet, glittering, swooping sections of pure emotion, and crisp, tight, razor-accurate percussion.

Review: Germany's Nadanna proudly presents brand new work by the cult Canadian synthpop act Techniques Berlin, over two decades since they went on hiatus. Formed in 1984 by Andreas Gregor and David Rout in Toronto, the band started experimenting with electronics, heavily influenced by UK new romantic sounds of the time, as well as rising Canadian bands like Rational Youth (Dave later became a member), Men Without Hats and Trans-X. In the late 80s, they played live on a regular basis and released three cassettes - released on their own Bombshelter label. Despite their moderate success, the band failed to secure a record deal but by the early '90s they had developed a strong interest in the burgeoning electro-industrial scene. Gregor and Rout founded Bang Elektronika and ended up working with local legends Digital Poodle. The duo are now staging a remarkable comeback, encouraged by the growing interest in their long out-of-print releases.

Given maximum space to resonate by the sparse but detailed electronic productions, Coughlan paints worlds of reality and fantasy mixed up, as memory so often is, so poignant as a result. Beats arrive courtesy of the unmissable 'Sex Bunting' and 'Mister Imperator', but whether the soundscapes are lively or luxuriating in the background, the concoction is heady and hard to resist.

Review: Known for their cover versions - having re-read Sly Stone, Plastic Bertrand, Les Chats Sauvages, and many more over the years - Telex managed to tread a fine line between comedy and innovation. Focusing heavily on a lo-fi synthesised sound, the Belgian alt-poppers would use plenty of humour in their work, but never allowed this to outshine or overshadow the musicality of it all. Released in 1980, Neurovision is a case in point. According to the band, this was their tongue-in-cheek entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, for which they were chosen as representatives for their home country in the same year. Deliberately banal lyrics, mostly referring to the competition itself, married to the glittering wonder of a proto-electronic soundtrack, mark it as a work of bold daring and a little genius. Sadly, it failed to secure them last place in the tournament, as they hoped, forcing them to settle for 17 out of 19.

Review: Forced into retirement after the death of founding member Marc Moulin in 2008, Telex's legacy is as colourful and memorable as it is boundary-pushing. The Belgian electronic pioneers emerged at a point in time when synths were just beginning to find favour outside the laboratories of scientific creatives, but while aural peers of the time like Kraftwerk threw themselves fully into a robotic future, Telex would quickly garner a reputation for a more fun vision of man-machine musicians.

Bouncy, jaunty, uptempo and - for want of a better phrase - much rowdier than many rigid structures of formative era electronic pop, newcomers are likely to find the work spread over this career-spanning singles collection immediately engaging. Setting a benchmark at the time, and helping create a blueprint that's still audible in may contemporary outfits (Metronomy, Jacques Le Cont), it might be erring on batshit crazy but that's precisely the point.

Review: Formed in 1978, Marc Moullin, Dan Lacksman, and Michael Moers broke the mould with Telex - one of the most influential Belgian synth-pop groups of all time. Calling on disco, punk, and the sound of formative era experimental electronic music that was beginning to take hold in Western Europe, they would simultaneously produce some of the most important tracks of the genre until their first disbandment in 2006, and bless us with hilarious pithiness in the shape of tunes like 'Euro-Vision', a bleep-driven 'critique' of the song contest. How Do You Dance? was the group's final studio album, rounding out a six-strong, decade-spanning LP back catalogue, and despite arriving almost three decades after their debut, Looking for Saint Tropez, turned heads for its originality, this beauty still proved they were more than capable of delivering innovative goods. One for fans of Metronomy, Todd Terje and more.

Review: Terminal, Barcelona's answer to Wire or Cabaret Voltaire, represent everything that was great about the 80s: musical freedom, total peculiarity and a stubbornness to conform to notions of 'classic' music. Taken from a bunch of recordings made between 1981-1982, this is a sort of best-of, or homage to the band, if you like. What's most interesting about it is it's freneticism and musical chaos, where some have even labelled it as 'techno-punk' - an apt description if you ask us...! Check it for yourself, it's an utter doozy.

Review: The latest release from Into The Light demonstrates once again few can match Tako Reyenga of Redlight Records fame and his Echovolt counterpart Ilias Pitsios when it comes showcasing the sublime musical pioneers of '70s and '80s Greece. Much like last year's Vangelis Katsoulis retrospective, the focus of the latest Into The Light release falls on another artist to feature on their classic debut compilation in the shape of George Theodorakis. Son of Mikis, the legendary composer responsible for scoring Zorba The Greek and Serpico, Theodorakis issued only a limited amount of music over a 20 year period, but was known for his intense studio habits which resulted in a vast archive of unreleased material. Much of that features on The Rules of the Game: Original Studio Recordings (1978-1995), with the 16 tracks rolling deeper into the new age synthesizer vibe of the two Theodorakis compositions that featured on the label's debut compilation.

Review: Club scene doyen, dance music veteran, and rave culture hero Johannes Auvinen opts to depart from the dance floor, at least for the time being, and deliver Arles - an ode to the other side of the electronic-acid scene, those sounds that make most sense after the chaos and carnage of a party have subsided and you're safely home on the couch with you and yours and all dearest.
And it works as well as it should, with the experience both of living in that world and making anthems for it clearly evident in the overall production quality and ideas. Arles is a warm blanket, that friendly therapist, an album that understands where you've been because it was there too. Remarkably, despite what that may suggest, this is not ambient or particularly leftfield stuff. Instead, it's rhythmic, pop-infused electronica goodness, for want of a more succinct, less awkward turn of phrase.

Review: To truly understand what's happening here you first need to know the background. Snowflakes Are Dancing is the delightfully evocative and - let's face it - wonderfully endearing title of Isao Tomita's second studio album. But this isn't really the Japanese musician's own work. Instead, it takes the arrangements of Claude Debussy, particularly the French composer's so-called 'tone paintings', and splashes new colour across the palette by way of some modern toys.

So while the guy who wrote the notes did so in the midst of industrialisation in Europe, his interpreter from the Far East worked on those tunes at a point in time when modernism was in full swing, and marching forward so quickly the future was already in sight. Using a Moog synthesiser, still then very much an experimental toy, and Mellotron, the result is an electronic overture worthy of the best sci-fi scores.

Review: Glasgow's Tomorrow Syndicate finally return to the release schedule after a near-three year hiatus, and we couldn't be happier. To put it mildly. The retro futurists have built an underground reputation for mastering sci-fi leaning synth pop of a subtly grandiose fashion - tracks that don't immediately present as huge but, by the time the last notes fade, have blossomed into huge things of real resonance. Take 'Twin Galaxies', for example.
A slow burn song, it evolves from hushed beginnings, stepping out into motoring pop, before exploding into full technicolour life. Setting things up perfectly for closer 'Soldered Dreams', an incredible low tempo, high impact gem packing neon keyboards, emotional key changes and a real sense of purpose, these two alone are worth the price tag. Not that 'Terminal Flux' and its blissed out electronic shoe gaze style, 'Hyper Receptive''s punchy and pace-y vibe, or 'Interphase''s hope and wonder aren't also amazing.

Review: Well it seems that Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen Music will prove to be every bit as far reaching and unpredictable as his legendary sets at Dusseldorf's Salon Des Amateurs. To recap, the debut Offen offering was a rare sojourn through the unreleased archives of Rex Illusivii, aka cult Serbian musician Mitar Suboti?. This second release introduces Toresch, a new project featuring Detlef Weinrich, Viktoria Wehrmeister and Jan Wagner. Weinrich is of course Salon icon Tolouse Low Trax, and if you were a fan of his recent Themes For Great Citites 12" you will want to spend some time acquainting yourself with the six tracks on this Essen Fur Alle mini LP. Musically, this is largely an affair between the vocals of Wehrmeister and Weinrich's snapping, fluctuating production hand. Wagner's involvement is largely an aesthetic one. Regardless this is a fine collection of music that will appeal to fans of the Salon sound and posits Toresch as a modern day CH BB. Quite wonderful.

Review: Berlin's Jennifer Touch is back with a second album of her synth, cold wave and electro collages and this one is inspired by reading 'Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck. She was touched by the idea of the settler's movement and got into the mindset of a cowboy while writing these tunes. The resulting sounds are full of hope and mystery and were all written in an explosion of creativity and energy in just a couple of months. That plays out in the urgency of the grooves making for another great long player.

This is the second and arrives six months after its predecessor. It explores similar sonic territory, with Alfons and company serving up a suite of moody and atmospheric - and occasionally dark - songs that flit between grandiose, "OK Computer"-era Radiohead torch songs, gently pulsating dark synth-pop, beat-free early morning song-scapes and jangling but spaced out indie-pop. Alfons is a constant presence throughout, delivering distinctive lyrics in his now familiar style.

Review: Boris Blank and Carlos Peron launch their Tranceonic moniker, and it comes through on the effortlessly cool Dark Entries stable, home to what we would say are the best electronic releases of the last five years. No pressure, then. New Crime is a difficult LP to pin down, or to even begin categorizing under one banner, with each track offering a different and equally delightful strain of electronic psychedelia. To give you a taste, the duo craft their own take on Yello's infamous "Bostisch" killer, which quickly dissipates into the more sparse, imperceptible drum and synth cocktails of tunes like "Police Action In Zurich" or "America Is Happy". Don't worry, though, there's plenty of dance grooves for you to get stuck into, such as the deep ad wonderful "Butterfly". It's a keeper.
