Last Night (3:18)
Don't Break Your Promises (3:11)
Review: This is one of those raw soul sounds that never goes out of fashion, and thankfully neither does it often disappear from availability. It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. 'Don't Break Your Promises' is a Milson Luce cover that gained fame in Jamaica before inspiring numerous versions.

Review: This 7" reissue of 'I'm So Proud' by Aswad and The Natural Band's 'There Was A Time' delivers a funk-filled gem originally released in 1972. Aswad's 'I'm So Proud' leads with a soulful blend of funk and soul, anchored by a strong vocal performance and tight rhythm section. On the flip, The Natural Band's 'There Was A Time' is a dynamic instrumental jam that showcases tight grooves and infectious rhythms, making it an essential track for any funk enthusiast. Review: Roy Ayers at his most transcendent. 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' is more than a summertime anthemiit's a spiritual moodboard that's shaped jazz-funk, soul, r&b and hip-hop for nearly 50 years. Ayers, born in Los Angeles and raised in its fertile fusion scene, places the vibraphone at the music's heart, coaxing heat-haze tones from sparse chords, synths, and that honeyed chorus. Flip it over and the instrumental version unlocks a deeper layer: stripped of vocals, it becomes a pure groove, drifting and hypnotic. What lingers is the balanceibetween melancholy and bliss, rhythm and release. A rare track that feels entirely unhurried yet quietly radical, now preserved in a limited pressing that looks as golden as it sounds.

Review: This orange 7" is a miniature monument to one of soul's most quietly influential figures. Roy AyersiLos Angeles-born, jazz-schooled, funk-mindedicrafted 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' not to dazzle but to dissolve. It moves with a drowsy clarity: shimmering synth, near-whispered vocals, and a lazily tumbling bassline that never quite lands. Released during a golden run of Ayers' mid-70s material, the track has since become shorthand for warm-weather introspection, equal parts ease and ache. The instrumental version on the reverse keeps the spirit intact, offering a meditative glide through the same terrain. Limited to 300 copies, this orange pressing pairs a low-lit groove with a deepening sense of legacyiAyers' influence isn't just heard, it's felt in the space he leaves behind.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: Few recordings capture the easy intensity of a summer afternoon like 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. Released in 1976 and wrapped in slow-drifting synths and soft falsettos, the track became a touchstone not just for Roy Ayers, but for 70s soul and beyond. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers helped define the jazz-funk crossover, placing the vibraphone at the centre of a sound both hazy and sharply detailed. The original vocal take on the A-side still melts under its own warmth; the instrumental on the flip uncovers the careful architecture beneath. Issued here on 7" black wax following Ayers' recent passing, this reissue feels like both a keepsake and a quiet honouring of an artist who shaped a whole way of listening.

Review: 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' represented a pivotal moment for Roy Ayers and Ubiquity as it marked a shift towards a funkier, more relaxed sound in 1976. It is one of his best-loved tunes as a result and always comes out when the weather warms up. That means it also often gets reissued, as it does here, as the track captures the essence of summer through joyful lyrics and a hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation while on the flip us an instrumental that offers a slightly different vibe. It all comes on nice yellow marbled vinyl.

The Cheques - "In The Groove" (2:50)
The Merits - "Arabian Jerk" (2:10)
Review: A double dose of dancefloor bliss is administered (subversively without doctor's orders) by Kent Soul. These two numbers have been faved by fans from several scenes and the world over: first, there's The Cheques' 'In The Groove', a longingly upbeat homage to a groovin' place by the obscure Louisianan organists. Lead organist Tony Nardi, would later go on to form the Thai funk group Salt & Pepper, famously recording 'Man Of My Word', but for then and now, this 60s manoeuvre would serve to transcend its mod origins, attracting the Northern soul crowd in the years to come. After, 'Arabian Jerk' by The Merits rehears a Goldwax production out of Memphis: mod and exotica collide in a steaming instrumental excitation of backbeat accents and parping 2-4 guitars, making a mod belly dancer's anthem.

On Let It All Out, Conwell delivers a deeply emotive ballad co-written with producers Len Jewell Smith and Hank Graham. For this one which arrived on black wax in March and now comes on a coloured slab, they work with Tomas Thordarson - whose Latin-flavoured single 'Shame On You' was Denmark's 2004 entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. He gets much more funky here with elements of UK street soul on 'My Life (main)' with its boogie bass and loose, louche claps, rubbery bass and catchy grooves. This track, previously unreleased, captures Singleton's emotional depth and soul craftsmanship. Earlier, in 1966, Singleton and his collaborators, Keni St. Lewis and Dale Warren, recorded a track with Washington DC's Blossoms, titled 'This Is Your Last Chance. It is a much sought-after jam which, if you can even find an original copy, will cost you upwards of three figures. Review: Some may argue that Dimitri From Paris and Tom Moulton have already provided the definitive remixes of Ron Hall, the Muthafunkaz and Marc Evans' 2006 gem "The Way You Love Me". This Glitterbox 12", which features alternative versions of those two legendary reworks, proves that they're wrong. Dimitri's "Glitterbox Retouch" of his Philadelphia International-inspired TSOP Version is a little more focused and tightly edited than its predecessor, but naturally incredibly similar. It's Moulton's "Philly Regrooved Mix", though, that's the real stunner. A near perfect example of Moulton's classic mixing skills, it sees the original disco mixer give space to each instrumental solo before unleashing the now oh-so-familiar vocal. The result is 13 minutes of unashamed disco bliss.

Recalling the quick-footed fouettes of dancer Durassie Kiangangu, who in the film entrains himself to many variously heated - and often difficult to dance to - Northern Soul rhythms, this track flaunts Lark's distinctly gravelly Canadian gospel voice, set against quick-witted drumming from longtime collaborator Darrell; both were favourites of the influental but short-lived Detroit label Topper.

Review: Sometimes the act of love comes accompanied by a feeling of revelry in simplicity; in love, you've skived the potentially overcooked acrobatics of a life led insatiably, playing truant to the ever-increasing and limitless demands of business affairs or public personage. Tearra's 'Just Loving You' is an A-sider single whose sentiment expresses this idea as simply as the product of a real loving relationship can, with the Alabaman singer expressing, in frank terms, the internal limit and thus soul-sating dimension of love: "all my dreams have come true... all I want is lovin' you." Soul Junction's reissue does a timely justice to the original Midtown release format, though the two tunes here have actually never been paired together before.

Not Today (3:05)
Over (3:40)
Review: Two tracks from the Indonesian three piece - and two moods to match. 'Not Today' is all warmth and groove, a feel-good anthem built for slow mornings and easy afternoons, with Natassya Sianturi's vocals gliding effortlessly over the beat as she carves out space for self-preservation. On the flip, 'Over' evolves into a more contemplative space, opening with a weighty drum break before unfolding into layers of rich melody and soaring emotion. Sianturi traces the emotional arc of a love affair from spark to collapse, her voice soaring over Raka's intricate, slow-burning arrangement, all crashing into a dramatic finale. It's a perfect balance of light and shade, showcasing the group's ability to move between joy and heartbreak with effortless finesseia compact but potent statement from a group hitting their stride.

Review: Thee Sinseers excel at expressing the complexities of love through their engaging melodies. The band, rooted in East Los Angeles, has made a name for themselves in the Chicano soul scene, led by QuiNones. The lineup also features talented musicians such as Eric Johnson on tenor sax and Jose Luis Jimenez on trombone, all contributing to a rich tapestry of influences, from 1960s rocksteady to the vibrant spirit of Ritchie Valens and Ray Charles. 'Can't Call My Baby' leads the way as one of the strongest tracks taken from their debut full length album highlighted on this 7". On Side-2 introduces 'Take A Chance', a brand new and previously unreleased track. Here, Joey Quinones shines with his distinctive crooning, urging listeners to seize the moment and embrace love before it's too late. If You Want It (You Can Have It) (5:14)
Review: This scorching 7" single features standout tracks from Chicago's Third Rail, who later became known as Maxx Traxx, and specifically for their monster hit 'Don't Touch It' (which has also been reissued by Star Creature and Numero before now). These tracks are drawn from the band's sole 1982 album, Reachin' For It, which is listed on Discogs for over L700, so not one for the feint-hearted. The single delivers high-octane, first-wave boogie with big bass, catchy choruses, energetic playing, and soulful vocals that infuse both tracks with joy and positivity. Limited import copies mean this will go pick and become pricey again so don't dally on it.

Loneliness (2:36)
If It's Not Asking Too Much (2:35)
Review: Carla Thomas delivers two soulful gems on this hot 7" from Soul 4 Real Records. On Side-1, 'Loneliness', written by Isaac Hayes, channels a classic soul vibe reminiscent of Gladys Knight and the Pips. With its polished horn section and an exquisite bridge to the chorus, the track captures both the heartache and elegance of the era. Thomas's smooth delivery evokes shades of Diana Ross, while the shiny brass arrangement brings to mind Burt Bacharach's lush orchestration, adding a modern gloss to her Stax roots. On Side-2, 'If It's Not Asking Too Much' features Thomas in a more stripped-back, intimate sound. With labelmate Deanie Parker on songwriting duties, the track features a brooding bluesy edge. The tango rhythm, driven by an organ and a second keyboard, creates a haunting atmosphere that highlights Carla's powerful yet restrained vocal performance. This side is equally fitting for starting or ending a soulful evening. With these two tracks, Carla Thomas proves why she was and remains a queen of soul, blending elegance and emotion in every note.

Review: First released back in 1973, Flying Dutchman aver their grand standing on the parapet that is the New York jazz scene with a timely new reissue of Leon Thomas' 'Just In Time To See The Sun', which now appears with a different B-side counterpart. Shaker-uppers, these sonic sailers are! Where As 'Just In Time...' itself first surfaced as the B-side to a stirring album cut 'Never Let Me Go' - which also graced the pimpin' Tennessee blues-jazz musician's later record Full Circle - it now comes paired with the pentatonic skiffle 'China Doll'. FD's new curative duopoly on Thomas' bellowing sound flaunts the singer and musician's deep range, contrasting the styptic funk explosions of the titular Santana cover on the A with the shaker-laden Orientalist groove on the B.

Review: Originally called The Take 5, Timebox hails from Southport, Lancashire. This quintet's use of organ and vibraphone helped to heighten their obvious love of soul and jazz influences which were always reflected in their repertoire. Before signing with Deram, they recorded a standout rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's 'Soul Source' for the Piccadilly label and here we get their superbly raw and direct 'Beggin' tune, a real piece of 60s gold. On the flip, The Quik's 'Ben's Apple Crumble' brings more brilliance to a crucial 45.

Review: Sedsoul welcome back one of their mainstays, David A Tobin, with a fresh new tune, emblematic of a soul supremo reared in the gospel tradition. Tobin's nominal credits stretch as far back as the early 1990s, when he operated as a house music vocalist working under the stage name Phoenix, but his more recent efforts under his own name have seen him steer in a determined soul direction, post-2010. 'Fallin' In Love' is an amorous cascade and an homage to sea-changes, with the titular "falling in love" coming backed by refrained urges to "turn your life around".

Review: The magical 'Go Back and Make It Right' by David A Tobin on Sedsoul came back in 2021 and offers a vibrant blend of soul, funk, and disco. This 7" pressing offers up two versions. The vocal comes first and is one of those impossibly feel-good gems with light, funky rhythms, a great interplay between male and female vocals and neat bass topped with strong synths. The dub pairs it back and allows the rhythms to shine but really the vocal is the one that will get the best reactions.

Review: Originally released in 1979 via Zodiac Records during a New Zealand tour, this track was a rare overseas issue of Tolliver's workione that now finds new life thanks to Soul4Real. 'Can't Get Into You' returns for this reissue casting a long-overdue spotlight on the Ohio-born artist whose powerhouse vocals deserved far more recognition. Side A's 'Can't Get Into You' is a soul-drenched, emotionally raw performance showcasing Tolliver's ability to channel heartache into song. The production is classic late-70s deep soul, with lush instrumentation and impassioned delivery that instantly grabs hold. On Side-B, 'The Show Must Go On' is an unreleased gem, revealing Tolliver at her most dramatic and expressive. With sweeping strings, rich orchestration and a gripping vocal performance, it's a shinning example of her underrated artistry. Despite a career spanning decadesiworking with Lou Ragland, recording across countless labels, and performing worldwideiTolliver never found mainstream success. This release serves as a reminder of her undeniable talent, finally giving her music the recognition it deserves.

Review: New York soul quartet The Topics never found the spotlight they deserved during their short run across the 60s and early 70s, but this sharp 7" reissue offers a long-overdue glimpse at their brilliance. Both cuts originally surfaced in 1973 via Mercury, the only major label to back the group before they vanished into obscurity. 'Booking Up Baby' is a slick, string-laced dancer co-produced by Dennis Williams, best known for work with Teddy Pendergrass and the O'Jays. On the flip, Van McCoy's 'Giving Up' gets an opulent, emotionally rich treatmentidelivered with the polish and pain of top-shelf crossover soul. Both tracks ooze sophistication, driven by harmony-led vocals and lush instrumentation. Given the scarcity of original pressingsione recently went for L850ithis reissue is not only a collector's dream but a chance for wider ears to catch up with two underrated gems from the golden era of American soul.
