Jacobworld - "Reviver" (5:05)
Jarrod Yeates - "Sesh Gremlin" (#2) (6:43)
TheLoopmasters - "No Frills" (4:36)
Review: Emerald's 25th outing takes the form of another superb compilation with four artists who have already released on the label and plenty of new names making an equally good impression. ANNE kicks off with the deep, thudding kicks of 'Coral Reefs' complete with lush hits to smooth the groove. There is more weight and intensity to the oversized hi-hats ringlets on Mike Konstantinidis's 'Apocalypse', DJ Plant Texture layers in plenty of gritty and grime to his gritty 'Swingers' and Jarrod Yeates goes for a twisted after-party vibe on his intense and unrelenting 'Sesh Gremlin', with many more highlights besides.

Michael Prophet - "Body Fusion" (version) (3:41)
Protek - "I Love To Dance With You" (The Nightlark edit) (6:16)
The Cool-Notes - "Natural Energy" (5:07)
Ilija Rudman - "Dub 4 Love" (Secret Weapon mix) (5:59)
Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes Part 2
Archie Bell & The Drells - "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over" (A Tom Moulton mix) (9:06)
People's Choice - "Jam Jam Jam (All Night Long)" (A Tom Moulton mix) (7:42)
Teddy Pendergrass - "I Don't Love You Anymore" (A Tom Moulton mix) (8:46)
Lou Rawls - "See You When I Git There" (A Tom Moulton mix) (9:39)
Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. An EP for watching the sunsets, dreaming on the beach and remembering life's great time with friends and family. NuNorthernSoul continues to honor the chill out legacy.

Review: Colkin from Raw Soul and Mauke Club sets the tone on this new FUTUR compilation, which has been curated by Benedikt Meger with a spherical acid house meditation. Peter Seiler's track, a standout from the reissue of his debut album Flying Frames, features Sheryl Hackett's soulful vocals and merges song structure with jazz improvisation. Eoism from Pulse Drift, Undersound, and Inch By Inch delivers low-swung electro flavours perfect for sunset vibes while the B-side opens with Voertuig of Tonal Oceans and Cobra Club who presents a seriously raw acid jam followed by an experimental, jazzy piece, reminiscent of the 90s downtempo era. 'Eoism' closes things with a floating, futuristic banger, going to make a well rounded (in more ways than one) and ultimately very useful piece of vinyl.

Review: 'Suite For Chick' is a heartfelt tribute to the late jazz legend Chick Corea. This 12" was assembled to reimagine classics like 'City Gate, Rumble,' 'Time Track,' 'Hymn of the Heart' and Return to Forever's 'Romantic Warrior.' It finds Bangkok-based Maarten Goetheer collaborating with Thailand's jazz virtuoso Pong Nakornchai and blending Wurlitzer chords, Moog basslines, ARP leads and Rhodes phasings. Inspired by his jazz-pianist father, Maarten fuses classic jazz with modern genres like techno, cosmic disco and ambient for a fresh take on jazz fusion. These electrifying interpretations honour Corea's pioneering legacy in jazz and fusion from his groundbreaking work with Miles Davis to founding Return to Forever.

Review: EC Underground is back with more inquisitors of low-end heavy sounds on Bass Scene Investigation vol 1 and again digs deep into the worlds of electro, techno, breakbeat and IDM. The compilation kicks off with the skittish percussive patterns of Illektrolab's 'Making Heads Dip', then heads into moody ground with ADJ, Pablo Funk brings some menacing synth work and Errorbeauty gets all weird and trippy with some mad electronics. Francois Dillinger offers a dystopian electro sound full of irresistibly jacked-up drums. A fine investigation indeed.

Brian Kage - "City Of Tomorrow" (6:50)
Pop Out & Play - "Corrosive Tongue" (7:47)
Review: The Fourier Transform label outlay an arresting sonic journey on their debut release, bringing together breakbeat, ambient IDM, ambient techno, and prog house under a single banner. Opening with Inkipak's 'Betwixt', we're met with sonorous low-mid square waves and machine-gun-fire breaks, recalling the breathtaking, verging on apocalyptic expanse of a warehouse rave turned laser light show turned warzone. We break from this warring weir with 'Omnicron Acid' and 'City Of Tomorrow' by Gimmik and Brian Kage respectively, which lowers the intensity and sonic flow via spacious atmospheres and dudding percussive pops. Finally, the perfect fusion of the former two moods is achieved on 'Corrosive Tongue', the lead synth on which sounds like just that.

Energy (6:28)

Magnetic (7:36)
Review: Leipzig based Riotvan, run by Peter Invasion and Panthera Krause, welcomes Kalexis and Paulor for this collaborative four track that mines techno's deepest depths. 'Going Through The Void' is a moody and slow motion opener that rides on an undulating bassline with plenty of ambient pads for company. 'Energy' is more edgy, a stomper with fractured vocals and wonky synths that builds a darker mood. On the flipside there is the brilliantly unhinged and unusual melodies of 'Lashes' which sounds like a marching band on acid and 'Magnetic' closes down with haunting low ends and spooky pads.

Review: American label Deep Bow makes a notable vinyl debut with this heavyweight 10" featuring King Stanley and Prince Jamo, both voicing over a thunderous riddim crafted by producer Dub Sev?. This roots-driven slab stars with King Stanley's passionate cries over sleek drums with shiny digital synths and neat guitar licks. It stays true to the deep, meditative spirit of sound system culture and becomes much more roomy and spaced out in the hands of Dub Seva. Prince Jamo's 'Joke' has a cleaner vocal and some natty keys, and also gets dubbed out by Dub Seva. A strong introduction from Deep Bow that showcases talent from both sides of the Atlantic.

Review: Olli-Petteri Pietila has skirted around the underground for a long time under his own name and as Transistor, but he's found a new outlet for his Detroit-informed vintage techno sound on Yore under the P0lyrhythm alias. Andy Vaz's label is a natural home for such vibes and he continues to place his influence front and centre with the utterly dreamy 'Lake Michigan Breeze'. He even takes on Vaz's own 'Detroit In Me', serving up a remix which takes the track far out on a blissful combo of wistful pads and rolling percussion. Review: Goats In A Hypnotic State is one of those deep, moving explorations of ambient soundscapes that smudges together ethereal drones, field recording, and mesmerising synth textures. The three-track work evokes a sense of surreal calm as delicate melodies and subtle rhythms build hypnotic atmospheres and each piece unfolds slowly, with layers of sound intertwining to create a vast, meditative space. The organic sounds of nature, such as distant goat calls and wind, ground the work, while the synthetic elements elevate its dreamlike quality. Overall there is no way you can hear this and not be invited into a tranquil, introspective world where time and thought dissolve into the music itself.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

Review: Nurtured by Mudd and owners of their own stunning live band, Paqua should really deliver more Balearic bliss than they have. As we wait tentatively for more heartfelt, organic sun-kissed soul, Claremont 56 have commissioned some incredible remixes... "Late Train" gets a full cosmic treatment from the Idjut Boys while Emperor Machine takes it down a dark alley and roughs it up with a series of analogue synth slaps. Ray Mang, meanwhile, focuses on the dreamiest aspects of "The Visitor" and rearranges and polishes them in a way that's reminiscent of a certain Andrew Ashong. Stunning.

Review: Pawsa has a reputation for delivering perfect party-starting music, often via funky, sub-heavy takes on tech-house. Who better, then, to remix The Adventires of Stevie V's infectious 1989 anthem 'Dirty Cash' - arguably, Jungle Brothers' 'I'll House You' aside, the most famous hip-house record of all time. Pawsa's 'Extended Mix' (side A) retains the warehouse-ready vibe of the original, placing the vocals, stabs and some wiggly new acid lines atop a squelchy TB-303 bassline and pumping house beats. Over on the B-side there's another chance to savour David Morales' 'Sold Out' mix, a slower, deeper, dreamier and lightly breakbeat driven interpretation that naturally earned plenty of plays when it was first released way back in 1990.

Review: The second release from Alex Egan's Utter sub label Quoth finds a link-up between Pearl River Sound and The Horn - two outlier operators with plenty to say when their machines collide. Pearl River Sound has been scattering outstanding releases on Further, Seagrave and Further Electronix amongst others, while The Horn comes from serious Devon techno heritage having cut his teeth on Evolution back in t'day. This is all about upfront material though, with a tendency towards microtonal braindance that veers from the self-explanatory collaboration 'Modular Grime' to solo forays into off-kilter, acidic electro funk. Nowhere near as derivative as a lot of current braindance, this is real freaked-out electronics for those with discerning taste.

Alongside a great EP by Aussie Lou Karsh, we have this new one by Greek producer George Kontogiannidis aka Pera Sta Ori, who has racked up some impressive releases thus far on Musar, Brokntoys and Yellow Machines. 'King inna di Ring' and 'Burning in Flames' is fresh digital reggae that pays homage to traditional Jamaican MCs while infusing authentic new school style. The A-side showcases Perez's commanding vocals over a bass-driven groove, which is reminiscent of classic reggae clashes. Powered by the Casio MT-40 keyboard, it embodies the signature digital-dub sound and on the B-side, 'Burning in Flames' introduces Coronel Brown's smooth chorus, blending lovers' rock with Perez's rugged delivery. It kicks off with some well swung tech house drums and a tight bassline thats detailed with some dusty percussion. Once that one gets you marching, 'Your Unhappy Face' brings some late night jazz house vibes with liquid chords and zippy motifs that are nice and loose, and 'What Is Tekno' (Grey Sky At Montmartre As Always mix) then layers in balmy cosmic chords as it rides a classic tech house beat. Review: Fear-E's Posh End Music celebrates its tenth release with an EP of ceiling-shakers by musical wizard Ben Pest. 'Worst Behaviour' is a restless splurge of overdriven but still tasteful energy, moving through five ultimate wompers of a kind of electrified techno we rarely hear. Ben Pest's style, honed since 2009, is entirely his own. First there's the VIP version of 'Strict Saws' and the follow-up 'Beta T', both of which reserve ample mix space for an overwompy kick drum, Pest's trademark stinger. The former track especially clips the zero level, hearing said kicks bleed out the sound around it, flooding it into a fully crunch-steeped stupor. 'Withoutta Moa' and '1996' follow similarly pressurific principles, the latter of which commands a special sort of apnea, resembling a strangled French house. Then 'Weight For It' closes on notes of maximised squelch and crossrythmic evac alarm sounds, as we're dragged into successive states of terrifying suspense.

Review: Now we're talking. At the time of writing - mid-spring 2025 - Britain has been basking in the warmest March and April since the first Covid-19 lockdown, but dark skies and a cold lack of humanity are prevailing emotions. Far right, fascism, the death of creativity and the onslaught of automation are enough to leave anyone feeling like they've been locked out of the sunshine and have to fend for themselves against a torrent of chilling realities. But not all heroes wear capes. Some are just called Charles Petersohn, and they make sun-soaked, soul-inspiring, warm jazz-inflected deep house that feels born in a more natural period of Earthly evolution. In fact, it was born after time spent in South Africa, one of the global epicentres of this genre, where the producer was involved in an NGO charity project. Immediately catchy, resolutely life-affirming, and probably the grooviest thing we've had all month.

I Ain't Playin With Y'all (3:44)
Review: Get ready for a classic hip-hop throwback with 'Definition Of Ill', the latest collaboration from Phill Most Chill and Krash Slaughta. Channeling the essence of early 90s hip-hop, the title track on Side-1 is packed with old-school vibes, heavy on samples and beats that hit hard. Phill's sharp rhymes and Krash Slaughta's impeccable production make for an unbeatable combo that will get any head nodding. Flip to Side-2, and 'I Ain't Playin With Y'all' delivers more New York-style boom-bap, complete with killer scratching and raw energy. The beats are tight, the flow is relentless, and the overall vibe feels like a trip back to the golden age of hip-hop. Phill's lyrics are inspired by Krash's beats, and it shows in the synergy between the two. This vinyl release is limited and comes in two distinct cover and label versions. If you're a fan of premium hip-hop, you won't want to miss out.

Review: Pikotaro is a fictional singer-songwriter created and portrayed by Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosaka; his persona's breakout single 'PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)' was first released on YouTube in 2016, becoming an overnight viral sensation. Once billed as the next 'Gangnam Style', 'PPAP' themes itself after an excruciatingly corny but funny household banality: Kosaka was allegedly sitting in his house, trying to come up with lyrics for his next song and realised that not only was he holding a pen, but also that there was a tin of pineapple slices resting on the kitchen counter. Thus, in the consequent music video, Pikotaro is seen dressed in a yellow leopard print costume, unaffectedly dancing around his living room, singing "I have a pen, I have an apple. Uh!", all while gesticulating and holding said items firmly in hand. Clearly, inspiration is a matter of feeling and intuition, not content. Only now, almost unbelievably, has this viral hit seen a 7" vinyl record release via Avex Japan.

Review: Susy Pintus's Fragile is an archetypal slice of Italo-disco that captivates with its ethereal synths and sultry vocals. Released in 1986 and now reissued in 2024, this timeless track exudes an atmosphere of sensuality and nostalgia. 'Fragile' is a mesmerizing ballad that showcases Pintus's vocal prowess and the genre's ability to elicit both exhilaration and melancholy. 'Live For Your Love,' is more for the dancefloor with a captivating synth line that weaves through a tapestry of pop melodies. The remix of Fragile infuses the track with a more dance-oriented groove, while the 'Live For Your Love' remix dials up the energy with driving rhythms and soaring synths. This is a great example of the enduring appeal of Italo-disco. Its infectious melodies, seductive lyrics and dreamy atmosphere continue to resonate with listeners decades later.

Review: From Ransom Note and Gestalt to Further Electronix, Placid One has been laying out an impressive repertoire of deep diving techno and electro steeped in the tropes of machine soul and rendered with a mature touch on the production. This double 12" for Altered Sense finds some breakbeat qualities slipping into the foundations of the tracks, albeit smudged under a heavy blanket of pads and woozy synth lines. There's an endless vista of harmonically enriched goodness to savour here - dance music with an emphasis on restoration rather than annihilation.

Review: Star Creature is very much leading from the front right now if you like cosmic disco. Tim Zawada's label is back with another delicious dose of the stuff here as Plastic Bamboo heads out on a crime jazz exploration of the outer reaches of our galaxy. His lithe beats and rugged drums are laced up with marvellous synths that are ever on the move. They shine bright and bring real sugary rushes of joy as curious narratives and intergalactic intrigue come thick and fast. Amongst the big bright cuts are some more mellow moments like the wonderful 'A Scene At The Sea' with its hints of Afro percussion. Delightful.

Review: Los Angeles-based The Black Lodge began as an intimate gathering place and ritual organised around exploring, sharing and experimenting with diverse forms of electronic music. This is the fourth collection of cuts from various artists of The Black Lodge multiverse. The Poetic Painter M, an alias of Nation chief Traxx, opens up the A-side with the dark late night acid of 'Elusive Clarity Of 1 Mind', followed by Pablo R Ruiz from Detroit providing the spooky lo-fi/sci-fi groove 'El Rey De Amor'. Over on the flip, Michigan's Fashion Flesh serves up a harsh experimental soundscape on 'Kisses' and closes with the tunnelling industrial funk of Fauna53's 'Jam1' (Asymmetrical weirdo orchestra edit).

Review: Harbour City Sorrow is a sub or sister outlet from the Dutch label Frustrated Funk. They are focussed on reissues here as they offer up real techno gems from Detroit visionary Terrence Dixon under his Populatrion One moniker. The beefy double pack mixes up tunes from 2008's 'View From Above' four-tracker and 2012's 'I Program My Computer Right'. The vital results are space travelling minimal techno with plenty of cinematic sound design and cerebral ambiance. This is a template that has been hugely influential over the years, though few ever bettered the original master.

Review: Vibe is back with more versions of Portishead classics from the mysterious Portishedd moniker. This latest 7" is a green slab with 'Glory' and 'Roads'. The A-side, like the B-side, is a remix from Kero Uno and it brings a swaying Latin feel and broken beats to the classic original vocal which rings out with a pained soul next to the eerie synths. 'Roads' is then a more late night and deep sound with the uneasy vocal whispers unfurling over lurching beats and swooning string sounds. It's a fine rework that is brilliantly atmospheric.

True Love (6:46)
Review: Johnny Powell's 'Moving Out' is a killer reggae classic, charting the 80s dubstar's staunch decision to move "way out, way out, way out" of Babylon, after much abuse by the figurative city of vice. Against a wicked riddim by an unknown production crew, we've got laboured horns, ghostly vocals and snake-rattles, all of which make this a certain addition to the ranks of the politically charged reggae and ska of the time. This reissue is backed with another track by Powell, 'Love Is The Answer', which balances out the 12" with a 'positive vibe' of true love.

Review: Moana Pozzi was primarily a pornographic actor, but during the 1980s and early 90s also notched up a number of club and crossover hits in her native Italy. This 12" from Mondo Groove brings together her three most sought-after cuts, adding in an extra unreleased treat in the shape of 'Bonita', a breezy-and-sleazy house-not-house number of the Balearic kind that was apparently a firm favourite in her 'spicy' live shows. Perhaps the best known of the included classic cuts is 'Supermacho (Extended)', where Pozzi's sleazy and dead-eyed vocals rise above a throbbing Italo-disco groove and chiming melodies. Elsewhere, 'Impulso Di Sesso' is a more dubbed-out and dreamy chunk of eccentric Italo-disco, while 'Let's Dance' is a synth-sporting, Madonna-influenced synth-pop treat.

Review: 'Jailhouse Rock' is one of Elvis Presley - and the genre at large's - most iconic rock and roll anthems. It epitomises the energy and rebellious spirit of the 1950s and was released as the title track for the film of the same name. It marked a pivotal moment in Presley's career but also became a cornerstone of rock and roll history, capturing the essence of the genre's early years and leaving an indelible mark on popular music. The tune, which now comes on a limited edition picture disc, showcases Presley's dynamic vocals and charismatic stage presence with its infectious rhythms, catchy guitar riffs and lyrics about a wild party in a jailhouse. What's not to love?

Review: Rock A Shaka continue their tributary exegeses of Jamaican rocksteady legend Prince Buster with a new 7", 'Got To Be Free'. Pulled straight from the corresponding Funky Jamaica compilation issued separately - which in turn compiles the best gems to coruscate his illustrious career - the 45s format does well to counterbalance the fallacy of comprehensiveness with a throwback in form. 'Got To Be Free' is a rather pleasant anthem to freedom: "we love the birds, we love the trees, we love the honey, we love the bees..."

Review: Rock A Shaka continue to wring out their apparently exclusive tenancy of Prince Buster's so far unissued reggae and rocksteady works, this time dropping a fresh 7" one with the instrumentalist Determinations on dubbing duties, 'Ten Steps Ahead'. Buster's final recording before he died initially went by the name 'One Step Beyond', and it has here been renamed in requiem, perhaps to differentiate it from the repopularised Madness cover. Lodged behind the vault door for years, you can be sure that Rock A Shaka thanked their lucky stars when they re-found it: "why must I suffer so much on this land?" Buster's voice is unusually lonesome and spectral, revealing in the late artist a rarely obviated forlornness.

Review: Prince Chamba joins forces for a superb new roots cut here with Slimmah Sound and Ital Horns. Their 'Secret Light' is a smoky and seductive sound with wobbling low ends and impassioned vocals delivered with a heart-aching twist as the melanotic horns fly up top and rousing chords add some hope. Review: Prince De Takicardie delivers a new four-track set of tachycardial heart-racers as reinforcements to his own Prince's Castle, which is both a label and a proverbial princely citadel. This is also the Barceloni producer's second edition to the powered 'Force Bleu' EP series, matched colourfully by the equally propulsive 'Force Rouge' counterpart, for which there have also been two records so far. Increasing in both pace and intensity, this raw and jammy follow-up reaches its crescendo at the rough 15-minute mark with the hypnotic 'EX-ecute (Execution Mix)', which conclusively yields to mesmeric acid and mystical three-tone entrainments, contrasting the first three track's relative utilitarian sense.

It found him working with his trusty New Power Generation and features the 'damn near 10 min' mix of the song 'Gett Off' which is sure to fire up any dancefloor. It was originally a single - also served up as a one-sider - to promote Prince's new band with a cover that boldly declared that "Nothing can stop Prince and the New Power Generation" and was only issued on 1500 copies, so this is a great treat for fans to own all these years later.

Beautiful People (alternative instrumental 1) (6:12)
Review: In more recent years, Mark Pritchard has moved further away from dubstep, and much closer to the smorgasbord of sounds and influences that is often referred to as 'electronica'. We don't mind the term because it gives us more room to interpret the music without any predefinitions, but "Beautiful People" is much more than that. Coming out courtesy of the mighty Warp, the tune is propelled forwards by Radiohead's Thom Yorke, where the legend's voice is perfectly infused with Pritchard's gentle Eastern chimes and tranquil beats. The whole track is a gentle walk into a far yet alluring sonic landscape, and this could well turn into a future classic. We already see it as a perfect accompaniment to a film, and if you're in the mood to totally zone out then you always have the instrumental cut to steer you further out into outer space.

Opening up the first side is US veteran Bruno Pronsato with the typically arcane microhouse cut 'When You Ran Away From Home', followed by some late night mood music by Iljir on 'Ziiik Zaaak'. Somfay opens up proceedings with 'Arborvitae' (A Voice Like Water) which is a zoned out roller with chords that encourage you to gaze off to the future. Review: There's plenty to get sucked into on this latest 12" transmission from Germany's Movida. It is Part 1 of a new Waterdrop EP from a quartet of artists. Somfay goes it alone to start with on the far-sighted and zoned-out house of 'Arborvitae (A Voice Like Water). Last of all is Polyfan Polyphenix, a jittery and rugged rhythm with razor sharp hi-hats and twisted vocals that bring a leftfield sound to 'Polymorph 2.'
