  13. DYL - "YDNTKNW" (5:25)
  14. Paragon - "Black Celebration (Stone Cold)" (3:53)
Review: The first release on the freshly minted Molt label is special on a number of levels, not least a transparent marbled vinyl pressing and the inclusion of ten specially prepared locked-grooves from lead artist DB1. He also provides two superb A-side cuts too: the hissing, deep space hum of "Late Night" - a fine fusion of abstract electronics, dub techno and pitched-down grooves - and the abrasive, slowly shifting ambient creepiness of "Tone". Over on side B, DYL offers up a wonderfully creepy slab of sparse, minimalist and metallic techno/bass music fusion while Paragon delivers a druggy trip into alien electronics and strange, sludgy beats and abstract sounds.

  3. Palta - "Daeksel" (3:56)
Review: DJ Central presents three new aliases on this elegantly put together 12". Conjuring up the perfect recipe for a DJ Cake, Central blends and explores the likes of pulsating atmospheric techno on the track "Balast", smoothly escalating breaks on "Ko Ko Dak Dak" and hazy crackling ambient on the finale "Daeksel". Unique, inspiring and truly excellent works from the one they call DJ Central.

  1. Formally Unknown - "Lotus Turbo" (4:28)
  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)
  4. Silene - "Jiro" (6:17)
Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Shuriken Vol 5

Cat: SHA 165. Rel: 02 Sep 20
  1. Friction - "For This" (feat Liam Bailey) (4:30)
  2. Pola & Bryson - "Cold Love" (5:00)
  3. Document One - "Like This" (4:55)
  4. Monrroe - "Horizon" (feat Jinadu) (4:51)
Review: Friction's Shogun Audio return to update their "Shuriken" collection of classics from their vaults for a first-time, special collector's vinyl press. While previous editions have dug deep into the label's full repertoire, this one captures a much more recent snapshot of the label and the deeper sound it's been celebrating in the last few years. Friction takes the lead with the subtle, sultry charms of "For This" with Liam Bailey from the label's recent 15 year anniversary collection, before Pola & Bryson's 2019 chiller "Cold Love" raises the cosmic pressure. Flip for some superb double bass-slapping funk from Document One in the form of "Like This" before man-of-the-moment Monrroe shuts down the EP with the belting star-gazer soul of "Horizon". Stunning.

  2. Ease Back (6:49)
Review: More spotless break science from Nucleus and Paradox: "Creator" is a hurricane of nostalgia with crisp jungle drums and expert execution of an early Orb sample. "Ease Back" creates harmony on the B with its chiller, Good Looking-era pads, bulbous subs and drums so sharp you could cut through concrete. Timeless.

Review: Pressed by dope demand! Pan-Al's debut EP from last year gets the wax treatment and it sounds all the heavier for it. Ranging from dreamy, contemplative ambience ("It's Nice To Miss You Too") to harmonic, spine-tingling Border Community-meets-Photek drum & bass ("It's Rigged") by way of lazy, ambling zoney beats ("Trace & Locate"), it remains every bit as emotional and sincere as it felt when we first heard it last year. Grab it while you can.

  1. Pawn - "Do U"
  2. The Renegades - "The Warmup"
  3. Vorres - "One Of These Old Days"
  4. Sideswipe - "Be With U"
Review: The London-based Modern Ruin Records label arrives with a mission statement to showcase some of the most talented and innovative artists making moves on the juke and footwork scenes around the world, and the label's first EP gets things off to an incredibly strong start. Pawn kicks off with "Do U", a dancefloor destroyer melding footwork textures with punishing D&B-influenced rhythms and bass, while The Renegades' "The Warmup" offers a jazzier number which places deft amen breaks throughout. On the flip, Sideswipe's "Be With U" offers a gospel-influenced, funky take on footwork with its vintage sample, but it's Vorres' "One Of These Old Days" that takes the crown, with delicate 808 rhythms fluttering across more soulful vocals. Essential stuff from a label to watch.

  2. Persian - "D Dub Retwist" (4:29)
  3. Rumbling Interlude (1:55)
  4. Persian & Nick Dunton - "Milton 21" (5:52)
  5. Persian - "Not Nuff Time" (feat Lauryn) (5:57)
Review: Since kickstarting the Existence Is Resistance label back in 2011, Persian has been on a mission to offer up sleazy, forthright and downright inspired UK bass music. He's at it again on "Revolution", joining forces with various like-minded fellow producers to lay down more scintillating and searing sounds. He first joins forces with DJ Staf for a bombastic revivalist jungle affair (the ace "Revolution"), before inviting Nick Dunton to help wrap wild electronics and gentle melodies around a more off-kilter D&B rhythm on "Milton 21". Elsewhere, Lauryn adds evocative vocals to the dreamy breakbeat flex of "Not Nuff Time", while solo salvo "D Dub Retwist" sounds like a more sub-heavy take on the mid-90s Ninja Tune trip-hop sound.

Play It Deejay Dub Mix

  2. Persian - "Questions" (edit 5) (4:02)
  3. Lone Wolf Persian (5:50)
  4. Lone Wolf Persian (dub) (5:21)
Review: Feeling full to bursting with nostalgia and an overwhelming desire to get dancefloors moving, Existence is Resistance main man Peter Riley AKA Person returns to action with more bass-heavy heaters. He begins by joining forces with DJ Texta on the weighty, skippy and organ-flecked speed garage revivalism of "Play It Deejay (Dub Mix)", before wrapping cymbal-heavy hardcore breakbeats in psychedelic acid lines, trippy vocal samples and deep space chords on "Questions (Edit 5)". Over on side B, he delivers a deliciously eccentric blend of infant spoken word vocals, bustling breakbeats, moody noises and ear-pleasing melodic elements on "Lone Wolf Persian". A slightly more spaced-out, vocal-free Dub mix completes a tasteful and tidy package.

  1. Persian & DJ Texsta - "Well Well Well" (D Ross dubplate mix)) (5:21)
  2. D-56M - "Homage" (feat Decarlo) (5:11)
  3. Persian - "Parvaaneh" (Retwist) (6:53)
  4. Persian - "Questions" (edit 6) (5:01)
Review: D Ross is in fine form on his dubplate mix of the low slung, swaggering and rude as you like "Well Well Well". It's bass lead garage with an infectious appeal that will make whole warehouses march. D-56M's "Homage" then sinks into more murky techno territory, with wiry electronics and sludgy bass taking you into the unknown and then Persian's "Parvaaneh" slows down a notch further, with dubby chords and twitching synths sinking you into a dream state. He closes out this most interesting and varied of EPs with "Questions", a techno track with dusty breakbeats and deeply buried acid that is fresh indeed.

  1. Love In The Jungle (5:49)
  2. The Crawlers (5:56)
  3. Ridge Racer Revolution (6:26)
  4. No Fxxxing Soul (5:33)
Review: The brilliantly dark world of breakbeats and stripped back techno that Illian Tape call their own gets that bit richer with this new EP from Pessimist. It kicks off with some rugged jungle rides that are coloured by bird calls, wood block hits and booming bass before 'The Crawlers' is a flurry of snares and hi hats that tie your mind and body in knots. The excellent 'Ridge Racer Revolution' is a hardcore track that never lets up, with flailing hits and hundred mile and hour breaks all demanding you dance. The closer is a dystopian cut of unresolved loops ad frazzled bass that lurches back and forth and traps you right where it wants you. Thrilling stuff.

Review: Proc Fiskal used to run a party called Shleekit Doss that was ecstatic and transcendent while still being fun and silly. He tries to capture the magic of the party on this new EP and does so admirably. The 6 tracks on the EP feels clever but charming. It's a collision of hardcore flurries, warped synths and day-glo keys that is often chaotic but also comforting. Drum & bass, rave, future grime and more all colour its grooves, but the resulting sound is pretty much impossible to define (in a good way).

Review: Refreshingly far-out beats from the ever-understated Profane. "Guardian" jitters like a robot on a pogo stick in a sea of bass sludge and there's a touch of the Dilla on "Iceberg 74" as the Torontarian artist splices a rattled-snare and hot tin roof break with faltering dreamy waves. Flip for some darkside pummelling from Shift: "Juju" is a rattling roller with heavy cymbal accents and freaky loose string bass twangs, "Totem" flexes a fretless bass and more sinewy drums. Speaker shattering.

  5. Elusive Elements - "Wildhoney" (4:49)
Review: The Elementar crew follow up on the promise of their first split 12" with another impressive collection of breakthrough names exploring the deepest shades of shimmering D&B. The tracks here lean more towards the armchair than the dancefloor, striking a chord with the Mosaic compilations on Exit from around 2011. There's a languid 80s new wave tone to Silent Mind's "Farwater" while "Wildhoney" by Elusive Elements has a tender slow jam feel to it, but the primary sound palette across these five tracks is glacial pads and needlepoint, techy beats crafted with precision. It's a strong, cohesive statement from a label definitely worth keeping tabs on.

Powerfully punchy and high impact as it's compacted into a 30 minute hurricane, each cut is a glitchy zip from trip to trip; the wily vocal drop outs on "Downgrade", the sweary speaker kicking "FMS", the wonderfully whimsical "Lazy Day" and the near cosmic synths, gurgling bass and fizzy slapbass on "Obscure" are just some of the highlights that ping and ricochet you around Phace's multi layered, multi faceted, multi dimensional album. Breath takingly accomplished.

Review: Some seven years on from their last album, Invaders Must Die, The Prodigy returns, seemingly as angry, frustrated and overheated as ever. The Day Is My Enemy sees Liam Howlett and his band of merry men revisit the glory days of Fat Of The Land, smashing together a typically in-your-face blend of rugged electronics, rock-tinged riffs and bombastic beats (including, on "Rebel Radio", what appears to be the breakbeat used on "Firestarter"), with similarly full-throttle vocals. There are a couple of notable guest spots - including men-of-the-moment Sleaford Mods on the standout "Ibiza" - but for the most part it's business as usual, with Howlett conjuring up music that should keep their legion of fans happy whilst reasserting their authority as world leaders in rock-tinged EDM.
