Review: After the inexorable 'Techno Disco Tool', Mella Dee shot like a shuttle from heartthrob disco-techno editor to all-star producer in his own right. 'Steady Movin' hears the British DJ and producer nod to Warp-era Yorkshire breaks, with his native Sheffield sound-checked through four in-yo-face selections, including 'NRG VIBES' and 'Fiedel Played A Big One'. Emphasising Reese bass movements and chunked up, peak-time thumpage, this one's ready-made for the edgier raver.

Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - "Don't Leave Me This Way" (Dave Lee Philly World mix) (8:33)
Kokomo - "Use Your Imagination" (Dave Lee Re-Imagined mix) (7:18)
Review: Tonight we're going to party like it's 1975, as two disco classics from that crucial year on the very cusp of the disco revolution are lovingly overhauled by Dave Lee. The A-side sees the original version of 'Don't Leave Me This Way' by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass - also covered by Thelma Houston in 1976 and British duo the Communards in 1986 - beefed up and preened for the modern dancefloor, in what you'd describe as a respectful but not overly reverential rework. On the flip it's the turn of Kokomo's 'Use Your Imagination', bursting with Saturday night bustle but also boasting a funky guitar riff that bears an uncanny resemblance to the one that would turn up on Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall pt2' a couple of years later. Dynamite party starters, whichever side of the vinyl coin you toss.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Tropical Man (3:46)
Mis Filos (3:34)
Review: Menahan Street Band's collaboration with Roge on 'Tropical Man' delivers a delightful blend of broken beat and nu jazz, drawing from soft island sounds with a smooth, melodic flow. The title track, 'Tropical Man', carries a warm, retro 70s vibe, with funky undertones, great harmony and bright horns that accentuate the laid-back groove. The keys complement the rhythm beautifully, creating a sunny, carefree atmosphere. On the flip side, 'Mis Filos' leans into a more relaxed, sing-along vibe, driven by its smooth, soothing chorus. The slower pace and breezy instrumentation evoke a sense of tranquility, perfect for unwinding. Both tracks display the band's knack for blending classic soul and funk elements with modern jazz sensibilities, making this release a charming, mellow listen that balances melodic intricacy with warmth.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve slightly split but otherwise in excellent condition***

Stef Mendesidis is a Greek DJ and producer now based in Russia. After releases on underground imprints such as Semantica, Projekts and Ben Sim's Symbolism, he proves he really is on the ascent with this killer EP for Ben Klock's esteemed imprint. The three cuts on Klockworks 23 merge the best of direct and impactful big room techno with the atmospheric textures of deeper/hypnotic strains as best heard on the ethereal opener "Valley Of Machines" and "Senzo" in particular, which evokes those adrenalised moments with your eyes closed under the strobe light. The real killer on here is "Gendarme Classe A", a mentalist thriller that nails that Berghain 9 AM vibe so perfectly with its devilish Mike Parker style loops and claps on the kick for added impact.

Review: The mighty Lempuyang label returns with its annual compilation series, again this year split over two superb 12"s. Both of them feature a remastered track from the vaults and in the case of this EP that is the hotly in-demand 'Dubby Plug' by W Moon which is a potent, kicking dub techno cut freshly remastered for 2024. ElsewhereHydergine's 'Ultraviolet' is soulful Detroit-inspired machine music and Dubrovnik UK's 'Waves' fizzes with static electricity. Merv's 'Unity' is the vast, cavernous opener and might be the best of the lot

Despite Everything (5:40)
Before It Fades (6:40)
Still Not Over It (5:49)
Review: Mesh Convergence is an artist from South Spain and this is his debut EP. But you would not think it because these are some hi-spec and original techno sounds. 'Reflection Of You' blends prickly percussive loops with distant claps, a percolating low end and tense chord work. 'Despite Everything' has a deft rhythm that floats just above the dance floor and is run through with searching synths and 'Before It Fades' gets more deep and minimal with curious synth sounds and sparse open hi-hats held together with a rugged lead. 'Still Not Over It' is gritty, fizzy, evocative techno for large, dark warehouses.

Review: Wind of Change is probably best known for being the title of a speech delivered by then-British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan to the Parliament of South Africa in 1960. It is also the title of this trombone-laced rhythm by Message, which is conversational and thought-provoking. The heavy brass is offset by waning guitar plucks and soft shakers while the bass cuddles you from below. Flip it over and you will find a dub version that is more paired back and heady. Both are standout tunes if you ask us.

Careless Whisper (live At Madison Square Garden, July 2008)
Careless Whisper (instrumental)
Review: George Michael's Careless Whisper 40th Anniversary Edition on CD is a nostalgic treasure for fans of one of pop's quintessential anthems. Released in 1984, the track's lush saxophone riff and Michael's emotive vocals made it an instant classic, topping charts worldwide and becoming a (slow) dancefloor staple. This commemorative CD presents four versions of the iconic song: the newly remastered original, an extended mix that amplifies its steamy appeal, a previously unreleased live performance from Madison Square Garden capturing its live charm and an instrumental version that highlights its exquisite musicality. While Michael himself was critical of the track's lyrical simplicity, viewing it as a minor achievement compared to his other work, the song's enduring appeal remains undeniable. This edition celebrates its lasting impact with a collection that offers fans both a trip down memory lane and a deeper appreciation of its musical legacy.

Originally released on Greensleeves, this repress delves deeper into the history, showcasing the very first cut recorded at the legendary Channel One in the 70s, which has never seen the light of day until now. The tapes were later taken to Tuff Gong, where the iconic rhythm duo Sly and Robbie added their magic, turning it into the version fans know today. This is more than just a reissueiit's a piece of serious music history that captures the essence of reggae's golden era.

Review: The Joe Gibbs and Studio 16 labels combine to put out two gloriously soul-enriching sounds here on a tidy 7". The Mighty Diamonds are often said to be one of the best roots harmony groups to have ever emerged from the island of Jamaica. For proof of their brilliance look no further than this late 70s cut 'Ghetto Living' which has super sweet vocals over a nice heavy and earthy dub reggae rhythm. On the flip, the whole thing gets dubbed up and psyched out by the one and only Errol T. Lovely stuff for warm evenings and lazy afternoons.

East At Dawn (Gilbert remix) (6:27)
Paradox Of Automation (5:24)
Ghosts Of Tomorrow (5:42)
Review: Mihail P's 'Multitudes' EP on Analog Concept is a gem for those who appreciate techno with ambient and emotional undertones, aligning with the subtle artistry of Nuron, John Shima, Derek Carr, CIM and Future Beat Alliance. The opener, 'East At Dawn', sets a delicate tone, weaving beautiful ambient techno melodies with hints of electro. Its graceful synths and deep bass resonate with a sense of introspection, creating a lush atmosphere. Another name in this style that is making waves is the fantastic Gilbert. His remix of 'East At Dawn' shifts gears slightly, infusing an upbeat energy and a more tech-focused rhythm while maintaining the Detroit-inspired warmth of the original. On Side-2, 'Paradox Of Automation' balances gentle beats with an intricate, celestial melody. The track's refined production and harmonious layers lend it an otherworldly quality. The EP closes with 'Ghosts Of Tomorrow', a triumphant, melodic composition that feels both uplifting and ethereal, like a final, hopeful transmission from another realm. 'Multitudes' showcases Mihail P's talent for blending ambient techno with emotive depth. Another winner in his discography.

Review: Diggers Society Vol 1 is the inaugural release from the underground electronic music label Diggers Society, based in Barcelona. This EP showcases the label's diverse musical philosophy, featuring two tracks from legends Francesco Farfa and Miki (with collaborators Niki IL B and Andrea Melly) and two tracks from emerging talents Luca Piermattei and Lucio. Side-1 opens with 432 Birds' by Miki, Andrea Melly, and Niki IL B, a hypnotic track perfect for setting a sci-fi atmosphere. Following is Francesco Farfa's 'Fear,' a groovy, bassline-heavy tune with a trancey melody that keeps the energy high. Side-2 features Luca Piermattei's 'Magical Year,; a track that continues the EP's entrancing vibe. The closing track, Lucio's 'Paranoid Hills,' is a wicked and ominous techno piece infused with psy trance elements, offering a dark, compelling end to the night. Diggers Society Vol 1 is a really cool take on the future of techno and trance equally.

The genre-defining deep house label Kaoz Theory headed up by the one and only Kerri Chandler has a real doozy on its hands here with the talented Devon Miles bring his Afro soul and acoustic guitar skills to a pair of new singles. 'Beautifull' appears twice on the A-side, one as a vocal mix by Kerri with skipping Afro house rhythms and gorgeous melodies next to jazzy horns, and another as an instrumental. The same tune comes three more times on the flip with Opolopo remixing and adding some extra weight for the club. The more meandering original is the one brave DJs go for despite its lack of rooted groove.

Milion's latest EP on HOME//GRXWN is a sharp, energetic showcase of his evolving talent. Blending the raw power of garage with the dynamic edge of electro, this release channels the spirit of underground dance music while pushing it forward. The A-side track, 'Adventure Time', is a standout, layering genre-defying electro beats with euphoric undertones, creating an irresistible blend that's bound to become a regular in DJ sets. 'DALIA' follows and has already cemented its status as a club favourite, with DJs like Dungeon Meat and Enzo Siragusa spinning it to packed dancefloors. It's easy to see why - the track blends garage grooves with a punchy rhythm that keeps the energy high. The B-side shifts gears with 'Machines Breathe', an intricate composition exploring the emotional resonance of mechanical sounds. Voigtmann delivers a remix that amplifies the original's soul, adding his unmistakable groove and funk, to round off a great EP.

Review: A serious wedge of sound is this new heavyweight vinyl from Hardline. It's a three track collaboration between Milon and Job de Jong that marks the label's 15th fantastic outing. Track 1 opens proceedings with some slapping snares and punchy drum kicks that are topped with dial tones, clipped vocals and warped pads. The second cut brings some retro garage motifs and pumping drum work as well as a filthy dirty bassline that will get faces screwed up in disgust. Last of all, the closer goes for a popping bit of minimal funk with fresh drum sounds and a nice wiggling groove.

The long-time innovator still turns out supremely designed sounds as this one on Mister Bear evidences. 'Afrika Alright' opens with smoky, soulful vocals and lovely flute melodies next to wispy synth explorations, 'Dub Afrika' pads it out with some extra pillowy low ends, then 'Hang On' brings some bright xylophone melodies and jumbled percussion to a more Afro tinged house shuffler. Last of all is 'Super Hero' with its whimsical synth leads and interesting sound designs adding rich detail to a dusty deep house groove. Timeless stuff as always from Miller.

Review: This Rudy Mills classic was originally released in 1969 on the rare UK Pama subsidiary label, Crab. The production was handled by Derrick Harriott and pairs some signature reggae rhythms with breezy guitars and warm organs. On the flipside, this reissue features a rendition of Otis Redding's 'Wholesale Love' that is short at just over two minutes, but seriously sweet, with lovestruck vocals over a wobbly dub low-end. The second of two Rudy Mills singles from that year, it was produced by Derrick Harriott and issued on the iconic Crab label but soon became hard to find and expensive. Plenty of heads will know these have been expensive to cop on the second-hand market but now they have been restored and remastered by Yossi Amoyal in collaboration with Eukahouse's Nils Hess. Deep tech house doesn't get more authentic than this with the slick, driving drums and nocturnal pads of 'Wake Up' and the more percussive darkness of 'A Trip To London' both sounding superb.

Review: Hydraulix Records storms onto the scene with their inaugural release, the Hydraulix Remixes EP, showcasing four electrifying techno remixes by the legendary Dave The Drummer. Each track offers a relentless assault on the senses, drawing from the roots of hardcore techno while infusing fresh energy and innovation. 'Enter The Darkness' by Minor Dott receives the Dave The Drummer treatment, morphing into a fast-paced, wicked onslaught of sound. With heavy hardcore influences and a Belgium doom atmosphere, this remix is a sonic juggernaut that commands attention. Next up, Jeff Amadeus's 'Control Room' undergoes a metamorphosis into a hardcore techno beast straight from the early 90s. Mechanical and heavy, this remix stomps its way through the speakers, leaving a trail of sonic destruction in its wake. On Side 2, H! Dude's 'Work My Body' is transformed into a warehouse rave anthem, reminiscent of mid-90s techno glory days. With its sci-fi vibes, heavy percussion, and infectious energy, this remix is a certified banger that demands to be heard. Closing out the EP, Ricciardo's 'The Funk' gets a rave-infused makeover, brimming with energetic stabs and hardcore techno fervour via Dave The Drummer. With each track delivering its own unique flavor of sonic intensity, this release sets a high standard for what's to come from this exciting new label.

As a savvy producer, Thomas maximised his rhythms and created numerous records for a variety of artists. He emerged at the perfect time and recorded breakthrough tracks in top studios like Channel One, often with the Roots Radics. While many of his sessions were released, some remained unreleased, trapped on multi-track tape. One such session featured Sugar Minott, known for his hit 'Good Thing Going.' The A-side kicks off with '9 Ufo's', an otherworldly minimal cut that keeps things deep and atmospheric. On the flip, 'Drip' leans into a more driving electro sound, while 'Daddyswing' closes the EP with a groovy techno touch, blending rhythmic sophistication with a dancefloor-ready energy. With early support from Ricardo Villalobos, this release is one to watch for those craving variety and quality in one package.

Miss Louistine - "Con Me" (3:37)
Sam Dees - "Con Me" (3:10)
Review: Deep Soul have uncovered an exquisite gem in Miss Louistine's sultry version of Sam Dees' 'Con Me'. No stranger to Dees' compositional range, having previously excelled in the dancetastic floor filler 'Extra Extra', now soak up this deeply luxurious Southern soul ballad of exploitative and irresistible love. Marvel at the seductive vocal control complimenting the song's ironic sentiment and then, to truly underscore the power of exceptional lyrics, enjoy Dees rendition as the flip side and muse upon the significance of different voices, tempos and registers. Yet, the message remains the same, in this unissued track until Kent accessed the tapes in 1998. Yes, Miss Louistine's version may seem smoother at first but its commanding tone belies a potency that the vulnerability of Dees rawer version can only hope for in this intelligent pairing by Deep Soul Records, now under the umbrella of Ace Records. So, enjoy the gorgeous sleeve and label design, put the record on and delight in the beauty of intensely authentic soul singing but get in there quick as these Kent singles do not stay around for long.

Review: Alongside co-founder Nils Hess, Sushitech's main man Yossi Amoyal ventures into new territory with Endell Street, a fresh imprint named after a bustling London thoroughfare that was home to the Eukatech record store. The label's focus? Reissuing gems from the Eukahouse archive. With Amoyal's expertise and dedication to curating quality releases, Endell Street is poised to make waves in the realm of deep house and beyond and it does that with this EP. Featuring a trio of no-frills, original tech house sounds that are primed and ready for the club, The Missing Member, Nathan Coles and Flunky all feature.

Once In A Remix (3:43)
Review: Funk editor Mister Mushi finalises the latest fleet-dispatch by the eponymous factory known as Mushi 45. All housed on a distinctive yellow, large-innered 7" record (you know, the you need the metal spindle adapter for), every release on this label is a charm. Here the dotted line marks out a well-defined classic by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock from 1998, 'It Takes Two', which in turn samples Lynn Collins' 'Think', after which this reissue is named and from which the now rather saturated vocal sample originates. James Brown's original production and backing "c'mon!" admonitions shine brightly, while Mushi's extra phattenings also serve to emphasise the mix without peaking it.

West Coast Poplock (Mister Mushi remix part 2) (4:17)
Review: Disco Donuts strike back with a back-to-back pose in the vein of pivotal disco-funk remixing from local edits master Mister Mushi. Once an out-letter of releases on his own Mushi 45 imprint, through which we heard many another reissue by the likes of Afro Breed and The Ethiopian Brothers, this second of two new migrations over to the Disco Donuts label proves a versatile sound and approach to his craft. The A-sider here features a mechanically reproducible instrumental version of Chic's 'Good Times' mashed up with Ronnie Hudson's 'West Coast Poplock', providing equal doses of freshness and reconnaissance.

Can't Buy Soul (4:15)
Feet Don't Fail Me Now (4:04)
Review: The first edition in Mister Mushi's 'Disco Donuts' series hears the producer flip two largely unknown disco-soul originals, both of which are like needles in haystacks. 'Can't Buy Soul' obverses this 7", riffing on Hebrew Rodgers' 1973 Original Sound classic 'Can't Buy Soul' - though it may have been eternally obfuscated by the Beatles song of similar title, the song is wickedly authentic and works just as well with a 4x4 as it did with its OG broken backbeat. 'Feet Don't Fail Me Now' does similar, grabbing a tricky disco song of uncertain provenance, and lending it an obstinate, disco-mixable straightening-out.

Hard Lifetime (4:06)
Hard Lifetime (instrumental) (4:09)
Review: This sneaky 7" from Mister Mushi is a must-have for any discerning digger or lover of feelgood grooves. The A-side, 'Hard Lifetime', is a masterclass in sample-based alchemy, seamlessly blending a killer hip-hop-meets-funk groove with elements of David Byrne's iconic vocals from Talking Heads classic 'Once in a Lifetime'. The result is a wonderfully infectious and toe-tapping creation that breathes new life into one of music's most familiar tunes. The production is so expertly crafted that Byrne's vocals sound tailor-made for the backing track, a testament to Mister Mushi's skills as a producer and sample manipulator. On the flip, you'll find the instrumental version, stripped of the vocal sample but retaining all the infectious energy and groove of the A. A record that will undoubtedly get heads nodding and bodies moving, a testament to the enduring power of expertly crafted sample-based music.

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (House remix) (7:00)
Wanna Be Startin' Something (House remix) (6:52)
Review: The vaults of Michael Jackson will always provide rich pickings for edit specialists and remixes. The originals were so packed with brilliance that tweaking them for modern ears or club contexts is a fairly easy job. Still, this latest offering does well to flip 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' into a house cut. It's a subtle job with filters doing much of the work as original strong flourishes, drums and vocals remain largely intact. Flip it over and it is 'Wanna Be Startin' Something' that becomes a 4/4 jam with soulful but driving drums and more MJ vocal magic up top.
