Review: Brace yourself as the holiday season is upon us, and that means reaching for those platters which stir up the strongest of sentimental feelings as the nights draw in. Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas' is a bittersweet look at the festive tradition - like so many surprise seasonal hits it's got an underlying heavy-heartedness which somehow strikes a chord with the masses. This edition of the all-time classic comes on a none-more on-brand red 10" disc, backed up by 'Humbug' and 'Closer To Believing' as well as an instrumental version of the lead tune, so if you're feeling bold an know the words, you can cheer family and friends with your own rousing rendition.

How Do I Know?
Review: Food Stamps is a great example of a record that fell between the cracks on its original release back in 1982. The one and only release from Baltimore-based funk-rock explorer Billie Senger, it has achieved cult status amongst record collectors due to its obscurity (finding original copies is notoriously tough). This reissue - pressed on green vinyl with new cover artwork - should, then, prove popular. "Food Stamps" - a riotously loose and floor-friendly chunk of funk from the Rare Earth school of white funk-rock - is the real killer, though the MC5-influenced flipside "How Do I Know" impresses with its fuzzy, recorded-in-a-shed feel and extra-cosmic production.

Review: Originally released on Apple in 1970. In the aftermath of the implosion of The Beatles. 'Instant Karma' features Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band kicking off a new decade with a decidedly glam rock stomp (and compressed handclaps to boot) that would go on to shape the sound of the pre-punk era. Lyrically, it's classic solo Lennon, hovering between bile and idealism, and the whole thing's blessed with a chorus that's stickier than freshly discarded chewing gum.

Who Has Seen The Wind? (2:05)
Review: 'Instant Karma!' was one of John Legend's biggest hits and it is one that endures to this day. He reached number five in the UK charts with it and number two in the USA, and it was said to have only taken 10 days to write, record and release it at the start of 1970. The single also marked the first time any Beatle collaborated with Phil Spector, and saw George Harrison play alongside bassist Klaus Voorman, with drummer Alan White and keyboard player Billy Preston also involved. On the flip is Yoko Ono's delicate folk piece 'Who Has Seen The Wind?' and the whole thing has sympathetically reissued artwork

Review: If you still haven't clocked on to Liars, they're a bunch of seriously hip dudes form Brooklyn who've been making music since the turn of the century. Having always stuck close to London's now-mythical Mute imprint, 2014 has been a busy year for them, one which has seen them release their sixth album for the label, the aptly named Mess. If that wasn't enough, this latest EP is a rip-roaring remix affair of the LP's "Pro Anti Anti" track, which sees both a varied and truly talented bunch of artists having a go and re-jigging their noisy strand of art-rock into unrecognisable shapes and forms. The original itself is a cross between The Strokes on a serious dose of downers and Cabaret Voltaire's chest-bursting power electronics, and while Daniel Miller's remix doesn't steer too far away form the original, Factory Floor come up with a jittering, broken techno version. Truss adds in a much-needed helping of bleeps and cavernous kick drums on top of the original's wailing vocals, while Nest Of Teens stand out thanks to a marvellous reinterpretation of Liars' bassline. Beauts, the lot of 'em.

Review: Fly-by-seat-of-pants funk from Parisian instrumental troupe The Mess and fresh new singer Lisa Melissa; Q Sounds drop this ultra-limited three-piece 45" that raw, pacey and straight from the depths of her soul. "Supposed To Be" is driven by an organ-slamming hook and glistening textured guitars, "Distractions" sways with more of a softer, soulful stance that provides stacks of room for Lisa to let her delicate emotions peep through while "Bride Of The Zombie" is a straight-up instrumental blues funk piece from The Mess themselves. Only 200 in print - don't mess around with this one!

Review: Barcelona group Los Kifers have had some unreleased music unearthed by Madmua Record thanks to the inexhaustible curiosity of Miquel Moreno Brio. It is believed they were recorded in 1970 and the band themselves have given over the original tapes for the remaster job done for this EP. A thunderous version of The Ides Of March's 'Vehicle' occupies the a-side of our album and shows the unbeatable power of the band's horn section with Mario Rodes doing wonders with his voice. Pure soul. For the b-side, 'The Sun is a Frug' is the bands's quintessential sound, an eternal breaker with hardcore soul.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series is like catnip to all collectors of Latin music. It has turned out more than 85 editions that cover all forms of South American soul and funk. This time out it's a is sublime four-tracker from the much loved Brazilian pair of Luli Lucinha e O Bando. It first saw the light of day in 1972 but has long since been lost to the public. Aspects of psychedelic rock, MPB and folk are all stirred dup with the tunes being held together by Luli and Lucinha's vocals. The EP is packed with magic and musical brilliance and also features Brazilian percussionist Alyrio Lima, who was a member of the iconic Weather Report in later years.

Review: This album's title refers to a symbol of destruction and renewal, which appears appropriate for what is a considerable departure for the velvet-tonsilled singer-songwriter Lamontagne. Having set his stall out with several albums of Van Morrison-tinged folk-pop that found its way easily onto end-credit sequences and the like, he's shown a desire to stretch out and experiment, and this nocturnal opus, aided and abetted by all of My Morning Jacket, is a leap into sleepily expansive psychedelic - as reminiscent of mid-'70s Pink Floyd as the bucolic realm he normally inhabits, Yet it marks more than a mere reinvention, being a luminous gem in its own right.

If you're a lover of Brazilian psychedelic folk, you will already be well familiar with this utter masterpiece from Brazilian actor and musician Guilherme Lamounier. He recorded three such records in the 1970s, and this, the second of them, is widely regarded as the best. It has long been a real rarity and holy grail amongst diggers after being created with composer Tiberio Gaspar and recorded at Radio Gazeta Studios in Sao Paulo. Element sou US hippie culture as well as love song stylings, angular funk and piano ballads all feature with plenty of great musicianship and rousing lyrics. Truly escapist stuff.

Review: Light in the Attic consider former Queens of the Stone Age man and one-time Sub Pop regular Mark Lanegan to be one of the most overlooked talents in contemporary American folk-rock. Certainly, Lanegan is a master of his art, as this atmospheric and well-timed career retrospective proves. Featuring two discs of material cribbed from his occasional solo albums and a hefty 12 previously unreleased tracks, Has God Seen My Shadow presents a convincing case. Lanegan is a superb lyricist, writing evocative, emotion-rich songs, while his gravelly vocal delivery - variously fragile, angry and introspective - recalls Johnny Cash at his most open and intense.

Review: It's album number five for the Georgia sister act Larkin Poe, who sound as confident, assured and authoritative as ever. Driven in equal parts by a commanding blues undertow, roots rock riffs and the leave-no-prisoners vocal prowess of Rebecca Lovell, the sum of these parts is once again enough to win over new faithful followers and make newcomers immediately fall head over heels. There's certainly plenty going on here. Tyler Bryant guest stars on 'Back Down South', a loving but honest ode to the band's home region in the US, and its world famous musical legacy. A soulful stomp carries the subtly danceable 'Tears of Blue To Gold', while natural, earthy guitar chords define the more-than-slightly-sardonic 'She's A Self Made Man'. Back on fine form, to say the least.

Review: Chris Summerlin's debut album under the boastful, ironic pseudonym "The Last Of The Real Hardmen" follows six years of releasing lathe-cut vinyl and hand-crafted CDRs that received tiny circulation to no more than a small circle of fans. The quality of the tunes on offer suggest this is a third or fourth album rather than an excitable first. Summerlin is a virtuoso guitarist and lays down electric guitar patterns with drums, field recordings and the occasional bottleneck to provide depth and variation. Instrumental music can be hard to keep interesting and this is where Summerlin's skill really kicks in, injecting his form of purist instrumental music with nods towards inevitably John Fahey merged with the full-bodied widescreen emissions of Tortoise... The lovely folks at Birdwar have also included 6 tracks from Summerlin's ultra-limited lathe cut 10" originally released on Lone Hand recordings and this faultlessly adds to the mass of an almost worryingly beautiful album. Otherworldly and timeless.

Review: It's been 50 years, give or take a few months, since Juliet Lawson bestowed Boo on the world. Landing on the Sovereign record label, the debut album was as confident as it was vulnerable and forward thinking, marking the arrival of a bonafide super talent who would emerge in tandem with a slew of incredible British songwriters (Nick Drake, Christine McVie, Vashti Bunyan). But even in and among that landscape, this one was something truly unique. Over the next half century, Boo rightly achieved cult status, giving Lawson her only real commercial success, despite the fact the record refuses to pander to anything like commercialism. Now rarer than British sunshine in November, this new pressing of the LP on vinyl, with bonus 7" single featuring two early demo tracks produced by ex-Yardbirds founder Paul Samwell-Smith, should not be missed.

It was recorded back in 1969 when they performed a magnificent live show for the BBC right in the midst of some of their most successful times. At the time they had just dropped their self-titled album and it went on to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard chart while the band toured the country four times in that same year. Their second album Led Zeppelin II dropped in October, making it something of a huge year for the group. The tunes here were recorded at the famous Fillmore West in San Francisco with the classic 'Dazed & Confused' appearing next to others like 'How Many More Times.'

Review: "They already sound like a veteran group and soon ought to be ranked in the company of the Who, Rolling Stones and the late Cream," said one US critic after catching Led Zeppelin playing one of America's most treasured concert halls, San Francisco's Filmore West. Then in its infancy, opening just a year before Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham took to the stage, we can say with a degree of certainty that this would be one of the shows that helped establish the address' now historic reputation. Gritty, very loud, and utterly groundbreaking at the time, trying to write about a Led Zeppelin record in 2023 isn't easy - so much has already been said and anyone with ears has likely heard them plenty by now. Attempting to do the same with a live recording feels even more redundant. Capturing their energy and ferocity on stage via words on page is impossible. Let's just say this, then: you won't regret picking this one.

Review: Before the mythos, the excess and the imperial dominance one normally associates with Led Zeppelin, there was an ineffable chemistry and magical spark that always elevated these four Brit musos far above the rank and file of the late-'60s and early-'70s rock scene, and this exhaustive compendium of live and session material from their early days makes this gloriously manifest. With seven new tracks added to the 1997 version, the combination of slinky grace and Herculean brute force that characterises this very special band has rarely sounded more vibrant and joyful to behold than on otherwise unreleased tracks like 'Sunshine Woman' and 'The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair', and it's notable that every one of the five versions of 'Communication Breakdown' herein is independently worthy of your attention. Essential.

Essential.

Review: Led Zeppelin's legacy remains undiminished after all this time, setting a new precedent for British hard rock as the 60s dissipated into the 70s and infusing their blues-derived sound with pastoral folk sensibilities through each subsequent album. Die hard Zepp heads will fight tooth and nail over which album is their best, but the landmark IV distills the best qualities of the band into one flawless, eternally iconic album. From the raucous opening salvo of 'Black Dog' and 'Rock & Roll' through the lofty classic 'Stairway To Heaven' right up to the raunchy delta blues and much sampled breakbeat of 'When The Levee Breaks', this is an album which should be etched on the mind of everyone, worldwide. This repress comes on clear wax - one for the collectors as much as those discovering the album for the first time.

Review: A properly heavyweight collection of live Zeppelin from two pivotal years in the Black Country legends' career, 1969 and 1973, between which years they evolved from the bluesy outfit they started out as into the proto-metal giants of latter years. So, there's plenty of Delta-via-Wolverhampton quiet/loud moments like 'I Can't Quite You Baby' and 'Since I've Been Loving You', Jimmy Page's guitar work at its most sensitive and subtle and Robert Plant's vocals soaring with tempestuous power. There's also a clutch of their most famous rock anthems - 'Whole Lotta Love', 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Black Dog' and 'Communication Breakdown' all feature, but with this being live Zep there's plenty of previously unheard improvisation -see especially the half hour drum solo-tastic version of 'Moby Dick' - that will be catnip to collectors and aficionados.

Following the success of Led Zeppelin IV in November 1971, the band spent most of 1972 touring and next album Houses of the Holy did not arrive until March 1973. In February, they toured Australia, followed by a North American tour in June. On June 9th, they delivered one of their standout performances at the Charlotte Coliseum in North Carolina and the set featured tracks from their latest album and fan favourites like the iconic 'Stairway to Heaven.' Review: This magnificent live album at The Kezar Stadium in San Francisco from back in 1973 captures Led Zeppelin at their peak and performing in front of a massive crowd. This recording showcases the band's legendary energy with powerful renditions of classics like 'Stairway to Heaven,' 'Black Dog,' and 'Whole Lotta Love.' It was recorded during their 1973 North American tour and listening back now it shows Zeppelin's unparalleled musicianship, Robert Plant's soaring vocals, and Jimmy Page's masterful guitar work. The raw intensity and extended improvisations make this a perfect performance while encapsulating the essence of Led Zeppelin's dominance in rock history.

Review: Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Review: Mind Games, John Lennon's fourth solo album released in late October 1973, arrived amid personal turmoil and political unrest, reflecting Lennon's ongoing battles with US immigration and his anti-Vietnam war activism. Recorded at NYC's Record Plant with a stellar lineup of musicians, the album is overseen by Yoko Ono Lennon and produced by Sean Ono Lennon, offering a fully remixed and expanded audio experience. Lennon's songwriting delves into his relationship with Ono, showcasing heartfelt tracks like the title song and 'Aisumasen (I'm Sorry),' imbued with sincerity and emotion. Other highlights include the politically charged 'Bring On the Lucie (Freda People)' and the '50s-inspired 'Tight A$.' The album excels in composition, production, and lyrical depth, epitomizing Lennon's creative strength. Mind Games sees Lennon's resilience and artistic evolution. Its eclectic mix of themes and musical styles, from rock to balladry, renders it a timeless classic. With its heartfelt sincerity and imaginative flair, Mind Games remains a great listen through Lennon's multifaceted artistry.

Spanning his solo career, the collection features tracks like 'Gimme Some Truth', 'Imagine', and 'Working Class Hero', each one a testament to Lennon's fearless songwriting and his unwavering commitment to social justice. Review: John Lennon's 1973 album Mind Games gets a full deluxe reissue treatment here and comes in several different formats with this being the ultimate collector's item that comes as a 6CD+2blu-ray edition limited to 1100 units worldwide. As Lennon's fourth solo album, this one arrived shortly before McCartney's Band on the Run so offers a glimpse into the solo Beatles era. The title track emerged as the sole single, charting in the Top 20 in both the US and UK. Lennon, 33 at the time, grappled with a deportation battle and political scrutiny while writing this one which was recorded with a stellar ensemble, including drummer Jim Keltner and guitarist David Spinozza.

Review: John Lennon's Mind Games album, released in 1973, reflects his introspective and philosophical exploration post-The Beatles. The title track is a standout with its catchy melody and introspective lyrics but Lennon's songwriting prowess shines in tracks like 'Out the Blue' and 'Aisumasen (I'm Sorry),' which blend personal reflection with social commentary. The album's production and arrangements are diverse and range from rock to soul influences that showcase Lennon's versatility. Mind Games remains a compelling chapter in Lennon's solo career, resonating with its messages of love, peace, and self-discovery, all of which make it a classic for fans of his distinctive voice.

Review: If you were intrigued by the mystery surrounding William Onyeabor, you'll love the decidedly sketchy backstory behind this one and only album from hitherto unknown singer-songwriter Lewis. Supposedly a pseudonym for a little-known musician and former stockbroker called Randall Wulff, L'Amour was released - as a private press LP, of course - back in 1983. Wulff has since disappeared without trace - Light in the Attic spent a year trying to track him down, with no luck - but his solitary solo album is nevertheless getting a deserved repress. Downtempo, intricate and soft focus, with gentle hints of country, new age and synth-pop, it's an impressive evocative collection of melancholic, soft-focus songs delivered in a curious half-sung, half-whispered style. As musical mysteries go, it's a beauty. More importantly, L'Amour is an excellent album.

Review: This record would be as notable for its backstory as its sound, were "L'Amour" not so unique and beguiling a proposition. Apparently the work of a handsome stranger who turned up at an LA studio in a white Mercedes convertible with the master tapes, only to vanish without trace leaving little more than a bouncing cheque for the cover photo, this album languished in obscurity as a private-press release for three decades, only now finding its way back via the crate-digging circuit to the limelight it deserves. A soft-focus gem, "L'Amour" - all radiant synth washes, piano balladry and ethereal croon - is a gossamer tapestry of abstract folk-pop, as redolent now of Angelo Badalamenti as it is of Antony and The Johnsons, and even predating the atmosphere of Arthur Russell's "World Of Echo" by a full three years. Eternal summer evening salvation.

Launching the "Because Sound Matters One-Step" series with new high-fidelity remasters of their first three albums, these audiophile reissues arrive in newly designed slipcases, complete with elaborate details of the audio processing stages. Pressed to 180-gram standard black vinyl with all 3000 copies numbered, rediscover a genre-staple with some of the band's biggest hits remastered to their fullest sonic potential yet, including 'Numb', 'Faint', 'Breaking The Habit', and, 'Somewhere I Belong'. Never has the veteran production of Terry Date and his seamless ability to fuse the band's warring metallic and hip-hop centric identities, felt so prominent and clear, while the passing of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017 shrouds his lyrical honesty and vulnerable cadence in harrowing retrospectivity.

Review: Linkin Park were many people's favourite rock act at least for a short time during their rebellious teenage years. Well, it is now two decades since the American outlaws were at their peak and specifically 20 years since they released their second and globally acclaimed album Meterora. As such it gets a special anniversary reissue here that features all of the original material as well as four previously unreleased concerts on DVD, plus rare and unreleased material that will be all nee to even the most hardcore of fan. A real must for collectors.

Certified 8xPlatinum and ranked at number eight in the highest selling albums of the 21st century, 2003's Meteora saw nu-metal legends Linkin Park attempt (and very much succeed) to make lightning strike in the same place twice with their now iconic follow up to their 2000 12xPlatinum selling debut Hybrid Theory.

Review: Unless you're a dedicated disciple, it's only when faced with a 23-year-spanning collection of their singles that you hear the evolution of Linkin Park. Opening with arguably their biggest crossover success of all time, 'Crawling', a track that catapulted them to mainstream success, early inclusions here are difficult to pin down. So, while 'Faint', 'Bleed It Out', and 'In the End', the latter another of their outright anthems, all fit the alternative rock blueprint, fare like 'Numb/Encore' wander down different avenues. Electronica? Syth-hop? Rocktronica? Call it what you like, as Papercuts progresses the scope narrows between the individual tunes, but becomes more focused, bringing together multiple elements that had been experimented with into one commanding whole. Compelling evidence for why they deserve the longevity they've enjoyed, and just how tragic the loss of Chester Bennington was.

Review: The Grace Of A Dragonfly is the third release by Lionheart who have reformed and have been recording together again since the mid-2010s. Originally an 80s rock and pop metal band, their sound reminds many of the likes of Styx, Survivor, Europe and Foreigner and the early 80s radio friendly rock music. Their latest album amplifies those comparisons by a factor of ten. Tracks like the triumphant 'V Is For Victory' and 'This Is A Woman's War' while 'The Longest Night' reminds of us primetime Loverboy. Every album like this yearns for a ballad. 'Just A Man' satisfies that request with a great band performance. If you are a fan of 1980s arena rock, then Lionheart is for you! This vinyl version is limited on gatefold in silver color and complete with an insert. How about the cool cover and graphics on this album?!

Review: Combining rock & roll, blues, country, rhythm & blues, and jazz, Little Feat may not be as familiar as many of America's other great guitar groups, but their impact and influence cannot be understated. Take the 1974 Rolling Stone magazine interview with Jimmy Page, for example. A true rock legend, he cited this lot as his favourite band bar none, which tells you everything there is to know. The rock and roll band's rock and roll band, or something like that, this recording was captured during Little Feat's undisputed heyday, five years before founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lowell George collapsed in a hotel room and died from a heart attack, leaving other members to disband and some to reform nine years later. It's electrifying stuff, packed with ideas and imagination, elements of honky tonk, swamp, and late-night barroom whisky chugging tones, marking the aforementioned Page out as a man of discerning taste.

Considered one of their classics, it blends Southern rock, blues, country, and funk influences for a surreal concoction that could only be said to be the band's own. Review: Behold Little Feat's Time Loves A Hero, a 35-minute masterclass in redefiningrock music. This album transcends generations, proving that if your parents were right about rock music being great in their days. Little Feat's sixth studio effort effortlessly blends New Orleans blues, urban funk, and jazz fusion without losing its signature southern rock swagger. Kicking off with the assertive funk of 'Hi Roller,' the band showcases complex keyboard lines and intricate drum work. The standout track, 'Day at the Dog Races,' is a cosmic odyssey of southern rock grooves and wild jazz fusion. Tracks like 'Old Folks Boogie' balance experimental sounds with playful, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Little Feat's ability to merge eclectic song structures with muscular musicality makes this album timeless. Thanks to Rhino Records, this classic is now reissued on vinyl, inviting a new generation to discover the magic of Little Feat.

Review: Country swampers Little Feat reissue their lesser-known album 'Live At Ultra-Sonic Studios'. A live album performed for a small, intimate assembled studio audience, this recording finds them live at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY in 1974. Mastered directly from the original pre-broadcast tapes, this one is a heads' introduction to the band - for the seasoned country rock fan not shy of a raw old live album now and again.

Review: Many fans feel that Feats Don't Fail Me Now stands as the pinnacle in Little Feat's career, showing their unparalleled blend of funk, rock, and jazz influences. The album captures the electrifying energy of their live performances while maintaining a cohesive sound from start to finish. Tracks like 'Rock & Roll Doctor' and 'Oh, Atlanta' exemplify the band's playful yet funky attitude, while Skin It Back demonstrates their tight musicianship and jazzy funk groove. Lowell George's bluesy slide guitar work shines on songs like Down the Road and the gem Spanish Moon, which features an irresistible brass section adding to its dynamic excitement. The title track, 'Feats Don't Fail Me Now,' is a great example at their spontaneous performance style. George and Payne's 'The Fan' expands the band's horizons with its jazzy time signature and spirited instrumentation. The album's highlight is the 10-minute medley of 'Cold, Cold, Cold' and 'Tripe Face Boogie,' which effortlessly blends slow funk with energetic shuffle and features captivating instrumental sections dominated by Bill Payne's jazzy piano. Feats Don't Fail Me Now represents the moment when everything came together for Little Feat, resulting in an album of mirthful, enchanting and exuberant music that maintains a high level of integrity throughout.

Review: Living Colour's Time's Up (1990) stands as a powerful sophomore effort that remains deeply relevant. Following the success of Vivid (1988), the band sought to expand their funk rock sound while addressing pressing social issues. The result is an album both musically impressive and lyrically poignant. The title track, 'Time's Up,' showcases Corey Glover's soaring vocals, delivering urgent messages about environmental and social decay. Tracks like 'History Lesson' and 'Pride' tackle the African-American experience, using samples and lyrics to confront historical injustices and cultural appropriation. 'Type' and 'New Jack Theme' examine stereotypes and the glamourisation of drug dealing, respectively, while 'Someone Like You' reflects on lost innocence in urban landscapes. Musically, the album defies genre constraints, blending hardcore, jazz, soul, and hip-hop elements. 'Love Rears Its Ugly Head' stands out with its jazz blues vibe, while 'Elvis is Dead' features a guest appearance by Little Richard, critiquing the idolisation of Elvis Presley. The album's hopeful moments, such as 'Solace of You' and 'This Is The Life,' urge listeners to embrace life and strive for positive change. Time's Up is a testament to Living Colour's musicianship and social consciousness. Its timeless relevance is bittersweet, highlighting enduring societal issues, yet, it remains a musical marvel and a call to action, urging listeners to reflect, reassess and inspire progress.
